Summary

Fixes #5370.

A routed provider can keep the correctly declared flat tool name exec_command but borrow the code-mode/freeform wrapper {"input":"..."}. Name normalization correctly leaves that real declaration alone; Codex then rejects the arguments because the declared function requires cmd.

This change adds a narrow schema-authorized representation repair at authoritative function-call completion:

  • exact bare exec_command declaration
  • original current-turn schema requires string cmd
  • cmd is absent
  • payload contains exactly one string input member

Only then is the payload rewritten to {"cmd":"..."}. Namespaced/MCP tools, extra or conflicting members, non-string input, malformed JSON, previews, and non-authorizing schemas remain unchanged. Buffered JSON, SSE completion, and persisted replay already share this repair owner.

The boundary is documented in structure/transports/responses.md with ADR-0098.

Verification

All commands ran with isolated temporary HOME, CODEX_HOME, and OPENCODEX_HOME.

  • bun test tests/responses/responses-function-tool-repair.test.ts tests/adapters/bridge-legacy-shell-normalization.test.ts — 67 pass
  • bun test tests/ci-workflows/ci-structure-gate.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/structure-ssot.test.ts — 56 pass
  • bun run typecheck — pass
  • git diff --check origin/dev...HEAD — pass

A broader isolated suite run reached unrelated existing Cursor integration-status expectation failures (placeholder expected while the environment projected credential); no failure touched function-call repair. Hosted exact-head CI remains required before integration.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved compatibility for flat shell tool calls by converting a valid single-string input argument to the required cmd argument when the tool schema explicitly requires it.
    • Repairs apply only to unambiguous completed calls; namespaced tools, malformed or ambiguous arguments, unsupported schemas, and non-string values remain unchanged.
    • Streaming previews and partial updates remain byte-for-byte unchanged, with the correction applied at completion.
  • Documentation

    • Documented the schema-bound shell command compatibility behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds schema-bound repair for bare exec_command calls whose arguments contain only a string input. It rewrites that member to cmd after integer coercion, preserves unsupported shapes, and applies the repair at the completed function-call boundary.

Register the remote tool through a namespace group. A top-level function's namespace property is ignored by collectFunctionCallRepairSchemas, so this case registers bare exec_command. Its remote__exec_command call then misses schema lookup before repairExecCommandInput runs. Use { type: "namespace", name: "remote", tools: [declaration(canonical)] } and call it with namespace: "remote" to cover the namespace guard and verify that the payload remains unchanged.

Addressed the valid CodeRabbit test finding on replacement head 8032d377debfe574a5a8633864ccc92d6876b580: the remote case now registers a real namespace group and invokes exec_command with namespace: "remote", so the unchanged assertion exercises the bare-only guard rather than a schema-lookup miss. Focused repair tests, bridge tests, structure SSoT, typecheck, and diff check are green under isolated homes. Exact-head hosted CI is running.
