fix(transport): match freeform streaming to its completion grammar and decode SOCKS5 content-codings - #5070
Conversation
…d decode SOCKS5 content-codings
The bridge decided whether a freeform argument buffer was a wrapper by comparing it with the compact literals {"input":" and {"code":", while the completion path reads the same text with JSON.parse. A wrapper written with spaces or newlines matched no prefix, so it streamed as raw JSON and then completed as the unwrapped body - the disagreement #5047 closed for compact wrappers, reached through a different spelling. The same applies to a Markdown-fenced body, which stripMarkdownCodeFence removes at completion for exec and apply_patch.
socks5Fetch assembles the response from a raw socket, so new Response(body, headers) surfaced a coded body unchanged: .json() threw SyntaxError on the gzip magic number. The request now asks for identity unless the caller chose otherwise, gzip and deflate are decoded, and any other coding is refused by name.
The keep-alive socket-close tests asserted that close propagation is observable within a fixed 50ms, which failed in the unsharded control lane and passed everywhere else; they now wait for the state the contract promises under a bounded deadline.

Update every document that owns src/lib
This changes the src/lib/ transport contract, but the commit updates only structure/transports/inventory.md; structure/INDEX.md also maps src/lib/ to overview.md, runtime.md, transports/byte-accounting.md, transports/responses.md, gui-and-management-api.md, clients/integrations.md, and ops/docs-and-release.md. Update every mapped document in this change, or narrow the ownership map if those documents do not actually describe this area.

Skip decoding checks for bodyless responses
For a HEAD request or a bodyless 204/304 response, responseBody returns null, but the coding is validated first. Consequently, a valid bodyless response carrying representation metadata such as Content-Encoding: br now rejects, while gzip causes content-encoding and content-length metadata to be removed even though no bytes were decoded. Determine whether a body exists before rejecting or stripping its coding headers.

Hold spaced canonical wrappers until their JSON is valid
When a provider emits a malformed JSON-looking freeform body such as { "input": "echo"; }, the new whitespace-tolerant scanner enters the canonical open state and streams only echo. At completion, unwrapFreeformToolInput fails JSON.parse and returns the entire original text, so the delta stream and authoritative completed input disagree; this spaced form streamed raw consistently before this change. Buffer these candidates through validation or ensure the completion path uses the same representation.

…le prefixes, and keep bodyless SOCKS5 responses out of the decoder Typecheck: DecompressionStream declares its writable side as WritableStream<BufferSource>, which TypeScript measures as invariant, so the pair needed an explicit conversion to reach pipeThrough. Review findings: the streaming decoder mapped every unlisted escape to its own suffix, so a valid backslash-b streamed as the letter b; an escape JSON does not define now stops the preview because such a wrapper never parses and completion returns the raw text. A lone high surrogate is held until its pair arrives. A decorated apply_patch envelope is held because normalizeApplyPatchDelimiters rewrites it at completion. A bodyless response no longer has its content-encoding decoded or refused, and the deflate fixture now states zlib framing through node:zlib rather than relying on a runtime default.
…owed to do A valid prefix is already published when an undefined escape arrives, and no mechanism takes a delta back. The guarantee is that nothing further is invented: the preview stops at the last decodable character and the completed item carries the raw text. Holding the whole wrapper instead would mean never streaming a canonical wrapper progressively, which the neighbouring test requires.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject raw JSON control characters in the preview.
Line 229 accepts literal U+0000 through U+001F inside the JSON string. JSON.parse rejects these characters. For {"input":"a<LF>b"}, the bridge emits a<LF>b as a preview, then completes with the raw wrapper text. Return null for raw control characters, as for an undefined escape, and add a regression case.

Summary
Two compatibility gaps found while auditing the 2.59.0 candidate, four defects adversarial
review found in the first draft of the fix, and the test that had been reporting one of them
from the wrong place.
Freeform streaming read its grammar differently from completion. The bridge decided whether
a tool-argument buffer was a wrapper by comparing it with the compact literals
{"input":"and{"code":", while completion reads the same text withJSON.parse. A wrapper carrying theinsignificant whitespace JSON allows matched no prefix at all, so it streamed as raw JSON and
then completed as the unwrapped body:
That is the delta/completion disagreement #5047 closed for compact wrappers, reached through a
different spelling of the same object. The routed passthrough never had it —
responses-custom-tool-repair.tshas used a whitespace-tolerantFREEFORM_WRAP_PREFIX_REsince#5047 — so the bridge was the one path still reading the grammar two ways. It now scans for the
opening of
{"<key>":"tolerating whitespace, which is whatJSON.parsedoes at completion.Three more disagreements in the same decoder. It mapped every escape it did not list to that
escape's own suffix, so a valid
\bstreamed as the letter b while the completed item carriedU+0008;
\band\fare now decoded, and an escape JSON does not define stops the previewbecause such a wrapper never parses and completion returns the raw text. A
\uD83Dat a chunkboundary published a lone high surrogate, which is not a character; the pair is now emitted
together or not at all. A Markdown-fenced body streamed its fence bytes even though
stripMarkdownCodeFenceremoves one complete outer fence at completion forexecandapply_patch, and a decorated*** Begin Patch ***envelope streamed its markers even thoughnormalizeApplyPatchDelimitersrewrites them; both now hold. Releasing a fence when it looksclosed is not sufficient, because more text can still arrive and withdraw it.
Two cases are documented rather than closed, both in the code: a duplicate
inputkey, whereJSON.parsekeeps the last one, and a wrapper that turns invalid after streaming has alreadycommitted. Closing either means holding every canonical wrapper until its object parses, which
is the progressive streaming this path exists to provide and which a neighbouring test requires.
The preview stops rather than continuing to decode, so the damage is bounded and nothing is
invented; the completed item stays authoritative either way.
SOCKS5 surfaced coded bodies unchanged.
socks5Fetchassembles its response from a rawsocket, so
fetchis not there to undo a content-coding, andnew Response(body, { headers })handed the coded bytes to whatever read them:
response.json()throws SyntaxError on the gzipmagic number, and an SSE reader sees noise rather than frames. The request now asks for
identityunless the caller chose anaccept-encodingitself, agzipordeflateresponse isdecoded and stops advertising the coding and the coded length, and any other coding is refused
by name before the body stream takes the socket. Refusing is deliberate: a coded response after
an identity request is an upstream ignoring it, and a named error beats a parser failure with
nothing pointing at the cause. A bodyless response is left alone entirely — a HEAD or 304 whose
peer advertises brotli is describing a representation it is not sending, not an unreadable body.
No decompressed-size ceiling is imposed. The identity path has no total-size bound either — it
cannot, since a long-lived SSE stream is legitimately unbounded — and a ceiling on only the
coded path would fail responses that succeed uncompressed.
The socket-close tests asserted machine speed. Two of them waited a fixed
Bun.sleep(50)before asserting the socket was destroyed. That is a claim about load, not about the transport,
and it failed in the unsharded macOS control lane while passing in every sharded lane (#4997).
They now wait for the state the contract promises, under a bounded deadline:
finish()destroysthe socket, and nothing says it does so inside any particular window.
Verification
No local suite was run. Verification is the regression tests added here plus the full
cross-platform run on this branch, which is green at the exact head with every leg passing.
New coverage:
tests/adapters/bridge.test.ts— spaced, tab-separated and newline-separated wrappers for boththe canonical and fallback keys; a spaced wrapper split at every byte boundary; a fenced body
whole, split, and one character at a time; a fenced body inside the canonical wrapper; a body
that merely opens with a backtick; every escape JSON defines; an escape it does not define; a
surrogate pair split at every byte boundary, asserting no delta ends on an unpaired half; a
decorated
apply_patchenvelope; and the bounded behavior when a wrapper turns invalid afterstreaming has committed.
tests/lib/socks5-fetch.test.ts— a gzip body decoded with its coding and coded lengthremoved, a deflate body framed by
node:zlibrather than a runtime default, a coding thetransport cannot undo failing closed by name, a 304 that keeps its
content-encodingand isnever decoded, a corrupt gzip that errors the reader and still releases the socket, a cancelled
coded body that releases the socket, and the request carrying
identityby default whilepreserving an explicit caller choice.
structure/transports/inventory.mdrecords the content-coding obligation alongside the rest ofthe SOCKS5 dispatch boundary.
One typecheck detail worth naming for review:
DecompressionStreamdeclares its writable side asWritableStream<BufferSource>and TypeScript measuresWritableStreamas invariant in its chunktype, so the pair is not assignable to
ReadableWritablePair<Uint8Array, Uint8Array>even thoughevery chunk this body produces is a
Buffer. The conversion at that call states exactly thatrelationship and widens nothing at runtime.
