fix(cli): tell a client-role listener apart from a missing management route - #4959
Conversation
A connected client runs the machine listener, which binds the same address a
standalone proxy would (port ?? config.port ?? 10100) and identifies as
opencodex on /healthz. CLI liveness parsed that body but discarded its
role: "client" discriminator, so every management-backed ocx subcommand on such
a machine resolved a base URL for a listener that serves only /api/machine/*
and died on its opaque JSON 404
({"error":"not_found","method":"PUT","path":"/api/custom-models/<id>"}) — one
character away from the management handler's own unknown-id {"error":"not found"}.
Carry the role through liveness and refuse it where a management plane is
actually required:
- proxy-liveness.ts parses role into HealthzIdentity and carries it on
LiveProxy. isOpencodexHealthz still accepts a client-role body, because stop
and orphan cleanup must keep finding that process.
- runtimeBaseUrl refuses a client-role listener with RuntimeApiError 503 (exit
1, not the misleading exit 4) and names the port, the machine-only route set,
the hub, and the on-machine alternative.
- responseMessage renders a 404 carrying method and path as the route the
listener does not serve.
- ocx models edit narrows a genuine handler 404 to name the id and
ocx models list-custom.

Remove the ineffective local custom-model workaround
On a connected client, editing local customModels and running ocx sync does not apply that model: syncConnectedClient downloads the hub catalog into DEFAULT_CATALOG_PATH and injects that remote catalog without gathering local customModels, while inference continues to route to the hub. The suggested recovery therefore leaves the requested model absent; direct users to change the hub configuration, or implement an actual local merge path before advertising this alternative.

Apply client-role rejection to the account API client
On a connected client, the entire ocx account family still has the original failure because src/cli/account-api.ts::resolveBaseUrl calls findLiveProxy independently and apiJson sends directly to that URL, bypassing this role check. Commands such as ocx account list, current, and use will therefore continue receiving the machine listener's not_found 404 and may exit 4; move the role-aware resolution into a shared helper or add the same rejection to the account client.

Document the connected-client restriction in public docs
This new user-visible refusal and its recovery workflow are documented only in structure/, while the public management reference still says the API is available whenever the proxy is running and lists headless commands as clients without explaining the connected-client exception. Update the relevant docs-site/ CLI/management or remote-hub pages so operators can discover where these commands must run; public user workflows explicitly belong there.

Match the management handler’s affirmative 404 discriminator.
unknownCustomModelId treats any object 404 without method and path as a missing custom-model ID. The unauthenticated loopback listener rejects /api/custom-models/<id> before dispatch and calls formatErrorResponse(404, "not_found", ...); that formatter returns a JSON body with a structured error object and no method or path. This response does not mean that the custom-model ID is absent.
The management handler returns the distinct top-level { error: "not found" } only when its ID lookup fails. Match that exact value:
- return record.method === undefined && record.path === undefined;
+ return record.error === "not found";📝 Committable suggestion

Summary
On a machine connected to a hub, every management-backed
ocxsubcommand failed with an opaque404.
ocx models edit <id> --display-name XprintedError: not_foundand exited 4, which readsas "no custom model with that id" — so the reporter went looking for a wrong UUID rather than a
missing management plane.
The 404 body in the report,
{"error":"not_found","method":"PUT","path":"/api/custom-models/<uuid>"},is emitted by exactly one constructor in this tree:
json404insrc/client/machine-listener.ts.That listener is what a connected client runs. It binds the same address a standalone proxy would
(
port ?? config.port ?? 10100), answers/healthzas opencodex, and serves only/healthz,/readyz, the packaged GUI routes, and/api/machine/*; every other/api/*and/v1/*path isrefused before dispatch. CLI liveness found it — correctly, it is our process — but
isOpencodexHealthzchecked onlyservice === "opencodex"andHealthzIdentity/LiveProxyhad norolefield, so therole: "client"discriminator the listener already puts on the wire was parsedand thrown away.
runtimeRequestthen composed a base URL for a listener that structurally servesno management route. The genuine unknown-id 404 from
src/server/management/model-routes.tssays{"error":"not found"}— a space where the listener writes an underscore — so the two are onecharacter apart and indistinguishable to a user.
Two corrections to the issue as filed:
the same listener a standalone or hub install serves, so whatever holds 10101 on the reporter's
machine is irrelevant to this failure, and nothing here is built around that port.
models edit. Because the refusal came from URLresolution shared by every headless management command, every management-backed
ocxsubcommand on a connected client hit the same wall:
ocx status,ocx models(live, price,set-price, enable/disable, selected, preset, context, shadow),
ocx export, integrations, Lab, andthe Aside profile commands.
models editis where it was noticed, not where it lives. The fix surfaces the real reason instead of adding an offline write path for
edit. An offlinefallback would have to reimplement the PUT handler's duplicate-slug rejection,
encodedModelIdCollidesambiguity rejection, default-effort-in-ladder invariant, andconvergeCodexCatalog()— forking exactly the validationsrc/cli/runtime-api.tsexists to unify —and its
config.jsonwrite would race a running proxy's ownpersistConfigwriter.Four additive changes:
src/server/proxy-liveness.ts—roleis parsed intoHealthzIdentity, carried onLiveProxy, and populated in
proxyIdentityAtunder the sametypeofguard asversion(a non-string role isabsent, never coerced).
isOpencodexHealthzdeliberately still accepts a client-role body:ocx stop, orphan cleanup, and duplicate-start avoidance act on whichever of our processes holdsthe port, and narrowing the predicate would make them blind to a real one.
src/cli/runtime-api.tsruntimeBaseUrl— a client-role listener is refused before any request issent, with
RuntimeApiErrorstatus 503 and a message naming the port, stating that the listenerserves only the machine routes, pointing custom-model and other management edits at the hub, and
giving the on-machine alternative (edit
customModelsinconfig.json, thenocx sync). 503 alsoyields exit 1 instead of the misleading exit 4 that
runCliActionmaps 404 to.src/cli/runtime-api.tsresponseMessage— a 404 body carrying bothmethodandpathisrendered as the route that listener does not serve, so any not-served-here answer stays legible
rather than printing a bare token.
src/cli/models-runtime.tsedit— a genuine handler 404 (one withoutmethod/path) names theid and points at
ocx models list-custom, and a not-served-here 404 is explicitly not relabelledas a missing record.
structure/gui-and-management-api.md(owner ofsrc/server/and/api/*ownership) gains "Theclient role owns no management plane";
structure/config.md(owner ofsrc/cli/) gains"Management-backed CLI commands need a management plane".
structure/manifest.jsonneeded no change:both docs already list the areas touched, no new source area was introduced, and the two new headings
are cross-linked by anchor.
Separate observation, not part of this change. The machine listener and the standalone proxy both
default to
config.port ?? 10100. That collision is what let a client-role listener answer where amanagement plane was expected in the first place; this PR makes the situation legible but does not
change the binding. It likely deserves its own issue (a distinct default, or an explicit refusal when
both roles want the same port), and it is a startup/binding decision rather than a CLI diagnostics
one.
Closes #4662
Verification
Local verification was not run: this lane forbids running the local suite, typecheck, build, install,
or the
ocxbinary. Hosted CI is the executable verification for this change. The correctness argument is static, over the source: the role is already emitted at
src/client/machine-listener.ts(/healthzand/readyz), the parse is additive and guarded thesame way
versionis, and everyLiveProxyconstruction site spreads the field only when present,so an existing exact-equality assertion on a role-less body is unchanged. The refusal is reached only
when
live.role === "client"; no CLI path callsruntimeRequestagainst/api/machine/*, so nopreviously working command becomes refused.
Hosted CI jobs that exercise it:
tests/suite, including the two files this PR extends:
tests/server/proxy-liveness.test.ts—describe("client-role discrimination (#4662)"): aclient-role body is still live for stop/orphan cleanup,
proxyIdentityAtcarries the role, astandalone body carries none, a non-string role is absent rather than coerced, and
findLiveProxyreports it on both the runtime-record and configured-port paths.
tests/cli/cli-transport-honesty.test.ts—describe("#4662 a client-role listener is refused instead of misreported"): the refusal fires before any request is sent and carries port, role, route set, hub and
ocx sync; a listener reporting no role is still used; a method/path 404 readsas a routing refusal;
ocx models editexits 1 on a connected client; a real unknown-id 404 stillexits 4 naming the id and
ocx models list-custom; and a not-served-here 404 is not relabelled.These run through
handleModelsRuntimeCommandwith injectedfindLiveProxy/fetchImpl, so nolive process is involved.
tests/clients/client-machine-listener.test.tsandtests/cli/cli-dispatch.test.ts—pre-existing coverage of the listener's served route set and of the liveness injection points this
change threads through.
tests/ci-workflows/structure-ssot.test.ts— runsstructure:check, which validates the doc map,the repository paths the two new sections name, and the new cross-document heading anchors.
