docker.socket vs docker.service in our code base #12276
Comments
When we are moving towards systemd socket-activation of services, we should have our
Note: containerd always runs as a service (containerd.service). otherwise containers would be restarted with it For systemd, we will start "docker.socket". Then systemd itself will start "docker.service" when the unix socket is accessed. On non-systemd platforms, they will both translate to "docker". The service will start and listen on the unix socket itself. Currently the only other implementation is OpenRC and https://github.com/OpenRC/openrc/blob/master/service-script-guide.md There was an old request to support other Right now assume that if it is not systemd, it is OpenRC... (see #8333) Beyond Google Cloud Shell, I don't know what other systems would use it ? |
We should also iron out any calls to There only seem to be a couple of places, so should be fairly easy (just expose daemon-reload and cat)

Currently we have about 4 main Linux distributions: ISO (Buildroot), KIC (Ubuntu), Ubuntu (Debian), CentOS (RHEL). They all use systemd, in the supported releases. So this portability is only needed for niche cases like Cloud Shell or WSL. |
