group stuff together at ingest time to reduce the number of s3 PUTs and subsequent merges/GETs. this includes:

having derived fields append to the same file that the direct ingest creates
grouping those by proj in the higher-level loop. limit to 5 or so at a time to reduce local disk/mem requirements.
