D1 Mini (4MB) blinks 3 times and gives garbage serial output

Describe the bug
Hi there, I flashed by D1 Mini (4MB) and when restarting it 3 times and gives garbage serial output.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Flash firmware (using both FZEE and the web updater)
2. Restart
3. Serial gives garbage output (checked baud rates, all gives same output)
4. Type help; no response

Expected behavior
Some kind of readable prompt

Maybe include a screenshot of the output after the firmware is installed because the garbage output just looks like a baudrate mismatch which would tell me the Marauder firmware is not actually installed.

Retried with 1.8.5, flashing proceeds fine:

Then when I reconnect at 115200 I get similar garbage. I have tried all other baud rates, same.

I think my ESP is just borked. I installed esphome, flash goes fine then:
