fix(core): read provider error statuses from status-shaped text, not any three digits - #1920
Conversation
…any three digits
Several providers' own error rules tested bare digits against the message,
so an unrelated number in a vendor text (a validation message naming
"(429)", an id, a token count) classified a 400 as a rate limit, an auth
failure, a missing model or a quota stop. The shared 5xx rule in
DEFAULT_ERROR_RULES already required a status-shaped position; the overrides
did not.
errorClassifier gains messageNamesStatus(message, status), true only when the
number is written as a status: at the start of the text ("429 {...}"), after
"status", "status code" or "HTTP", or next to "error" in either order, with a
bounded gap that holds no digit. It replaces the bare digits in:
- anthropic: the 429 rate-limit rule
- azureOpenai: the 401 auth rule (its message text is unchanged)
- googleVertex: the 429 rate-limit rule and the 500/502/503/504 rule
- nvidiaNim: the 401, 429, 404 and 403 rules
Every rule keeps its existing statusCode check and its existing word matches
(rate limit, Unauthorized, quota, model_not_found, server error, ...), and
every message text and class is unchanged for a real status.
Not done: Google Vertex has the same change but no end-to-end case, because it
cannot be driven through a local server in the error-classification suite.
Verification: error-classification-e2e fails on the new "unrelated number" cases
without the change and passes with it; the "named status" cases (a 400 whose
text says "HTTP 429", "status code 401", a leading "401 ...") pass both ways, so
real statuses keep their classification. Gates are listed in the pull request.

#1920 made the provider error rules accept a status number from the message text only where it is written as a status, and gave the NIM, Anthropic and Azure rules end-to-end cases. It changed two Vertex rules too, the 429 rate limit and the 500/502/503/504 server error, and left them without a case: the suite's Vertex section only called formatProviderError() on hand-built errors, because Vertex in project/location mode authenticates through ADC and cannot be pointed at a local server. Vertex Express Mode (an API key with no project or location) has no token exchange, so the real @google/genai client can be pointed at the suite's mock server through credentials.vertex.{apiKey,baseURL}, the hook seven other suites in test/ already use. A new section drives NeuroLink.generate() that way. - 27 end-to-end cases for those two rules. Seven answer a 400 whose text holds the digits of a status where none is written (a limit in parentheses, a request id, a count that contains them) and must not become a rate limit or a server error. Twenty are controls that classified before the change and must still: a 400 whose text names the status, a 400 with a named phrase and no number, and a real 429, 502 or 503. Two comments that said Vertex cannot be driven through a local server now say where it can be. Not done: - Project/location (ADC) mode is still not driven end to end; the four direct formatProviderError() cases in the suite are unchanged. - stream() and Claude-on-Vertex are not driven here; they reach the same two rules through the same formatProviderError(). - The CI weight of this suite (test:error-classification-e2e@71 in ci.yml) is not updated; the four real-status cases add about 20 s. Verification: with the pre-#1920 bare-digit patterns put back in the two Vertex rules and the package rebuilt, the seven unrelated-number cases fail and the other 225 cases pass; with the source restored and rebuilt, 232/232 pass. Run and passing on the committed tree: check, lint, check:tools-tests, check:test-parse, check:deps, test:provider-structure, test:model-manifests, test:error-classification-e2e and test:error-classifier-contract.
Summary
Provider error rules that tested bare digits against the message text now accept a number only where it is written as an HTTP status. Found while reviewing #1902 and left out of scope there.

The Vertex suite failed one wall-clock case in the gates run while the machine was busy (a tool-bound timing case, not status parsing) and passed 16 of 16 when run again on its own.Not done
429 ...was dropped: the Anthropic SDK puts the real HTTP status first (400 {...}), so that shape only occurs with a real 429, which the status check already handles.Summary by CodeRabbit
