refactor(citrineos): read and seed through the GraphQL data API - #14
Conversation
records.ts justified reading Postgres directly with three reasons, and the
load-bearing one was wrong: "Hasura is part of their dev compose, not
their product". Measured against citrineos-core, GraphQL is the
sanctioned data path for first-party code:
- packages/ocpi-base, a shipped server-side package, creates
Authorizations with insert_Authorizations_one
- apps/operator-ui does the same for its own CRUD
- their e2e suite seeds fixtures through a GraphQLClient posting to
hasuraUrl
- their compose starts graphql-engine ungated, while gating the
operator UI and the OCPI server behind profiles
The other two reasons stand -- Hasura derives field names from columns,
so it insulates from no schema change, and it costs an image, a port and
an auth story. Neither is a reason to prefer shelling into a container,
so the trade is now worth making.
The driver reached into Postgres with `docker exec psql` because
CitrineOS's REST data endpoints answer none of what the scenarios assert
on: no latest transaction for a station (the one transaction route
requires the transactionId you are trying to find, and answers 400
without it), no idTag on a transaction, no stop reason, no count, and no
Authorization CRUD. All of that is still true.
What was not true is the reason given for skipping the bundled Hasura.
It is the vendor's own data path -- their shipped packages/ocpi-base
creates Authorizations with insert_Authorizations_one, their operator UI
uses the same mutations, their e2e suite seeds fixtures through a
GraphQLClient, and their compose starts graphql-engine ungated while
gating the UI and the OCPI server behind profiles. The server even
demands it: sendLocalList answers "create the Authorization before
adding it to a local auth list", and no REST route can create one.
So records, fixtures, verification and teardown now go through GraphQL,
and this driver no longer shells into a container -- it can be pointed
at a CitrineOS nobody on this host owns. Three queries that had no
GraphQL equivalent were rebuilt rather than dropped:
- the three-table join behind the transaction readers is one nested
query, through relationships derived from the foreign keys
- the variant check reads the generated schema by introspection,
where it read information_schema
- teardown's guard reads the foreign keys through
pg_suggest_relationships, where it read pg_constraint, so a fifth
referencing table on a future CitrineOS is still picked up
provision tracks the tables and the three named relationships through
the metadata API, which is the counterpart of the SteVe driver writing
an API password and restarting the container. Nothing of CitrineOS's own
Hasura metadata is vendored: the API is asked what exists rather than
told.
One property changes and is documented where it matters: the expired
fixture's instant is now computed here instead of by Postgres, because a
mutation sends values and not expressions. The CSMS compares it against
its own clock, which is the skew EXPIRED_FIXTURE_BACKDATE_MINUTES exists
to cover.
Cost, stated plainly: another pinned image and another published port,
and no insulation from the schema -- Hasura derives field names from
column names, so the v1.9.1 -> v2 column rename breaks these queries
exactly as it broke the SQL.
Sweep on the pinned image: 44 scenarios, no failures, 7 NOT APPLICABLE,
and no flakes at all, where the SQL transport needed one or two isolated
retries per run. tc023-3 still fails on citrineos/citrineos#215, which
is the finding this driver exists to report.
The driver reported 38 PASS / 7 NOT APPLICABLE / 2 FAIL, measured 2026-08-11. One of those two failures was ours rather than CitrineOS's: TC_044.2 asked for a retrieveDate +90s against a 110s hold, leaving ~20s for the status train, and it is fixed in tck/specs/firmware.ts. The measured verdict is now 39 / 7 / 1, with a parallel pass that needed no isolated retry at all -- a first for this driver. The remaining failure is the finding: TC_023.3, `Blocked` answered as `Invalid`, citrineos/citrineos#215. Also records what the count does NOT include. citrineos/citrineos#216 -- OCPP 1.6 FirmwareStatusNotification answered with a NotSupported CALLERROR where OCA TC_044 puts a .conf on the Central System -- is reported and real, and three rows stay green over nine of those CALLERRORs, because these scenarios assert only what the charge point sent and never the CSMS's answer to it. scope.ts already says so per row; the README said nothing, which let "2 FAIL" read as "two defects". The two TC_044 scope descriptions lose the margin arithmetic they no longer describe, and keep the one observation from those failures that was never explained: the socket dropped just after a CALLERROR, on a scenario whose siblings take four of them without disconnecting. The v1.9.1 row is left at its 2026-08-11 figures and marked as not re-measured since either change, rather than being quietly carried forward as current.
The Hasura bootstrap posted one `pg_track_table` per table on EVERY
provision -- 56 of them, each rebuilding Hasura's schema cache, each
answer discarded by matching "already tracked" against a regex -- plus
three relationship creates. It now reads the current metadata, tracks
the difference in one `pg_track_tables`, and creates only the
relationships that are absent.
Measured: a cold bootstrap goes 17s -> 2.7s, and a re-provision 17s ->
0.22s with no writes at all. It also restores the rule the SteVe driver
follows and this one had dropped -- only ever write what was never set --
which makes it safe against a CitrineOS that applied its own
hasura-metadata: a relationship someone else defined keeps its
definition instead of being overwritten or throwing.
`metadata()` went with it: dead, and its docstring argued for the `bulk`
that `tolerant()` existed to work around. `tolerant()` is gone too --
with a delta there is nothing to forgive.
Also from the same review pass:
- `query Fixtures` was written twice, verbatim, in the write path and
the check path. One `fixtureRows()` now, so the seeder cannot write
a column the verifier never reads.
- teardown asked "is this row referenced" once per fixture; it asks
once, with `_in` and `distinct_on`.
- `prepareStation` spelled the station predicate three ways in one
document, two of them by hand, defeating the point of
`stationFilter` -- the variant-dependent column name now appears
exactly once in the file. It also stopped sending a delete mutation
for the common case where the station has no local list at all.
- `referencesTo` asked the whole source for suggestions to keep four;
it asks about the one table.
And the prose the migration left behind: provision.ts still opened with
"here everything is SQL" and pointed at a rebuttal of its own design,
compose.yaml said the Hasura sidecar was dropped ninety lines above
defining it, and the README sent readers to a `guards()` that no longer
exists. TRANSACTION_FIELDS no longer claims a batching benefit the call
sites do not get -- it explains instead why caching the row would be
wrong rather than merely complex.
The headline said "and no flakes at all", which reads as something the driver now is. It was one run. Re-running the same commit on a busy workstation produced nine lane artifacts, every one green on the isolated retry -- the parallel pass measures the host as much as it measures the CSMS, which is exactly why --retry-failed-isolated decides the verdict.

Bind the GraphQL port to loopback.
graphql-engine publishes 8090:8080 on all interfaces. The citrine service publishes 127.0.0.1:8080:8080. The header comment states that both ports are published on loopback. Hasura runs with no admin secret here, so this mapping exposes unauthenticated read/write access to the CitrineOS database, plus the metadata API, to anything that can reach the host. The Postgres credentials on Line 147 are then reachable through that same endpoint.

Hasura pg_suggest_relationships omit_tracked default metadata API
💡 Result:
In the Hasura Metadata API, the pg_suggest_relationships endpoint is used to identify potential relationships that can be tracked in your database [1]. When calling this API, the omit_tracked argument is a boolean option used to control the output [1]. If set to true, the API will exclude relationships that have already been tracked in your metadata [1]. The default value for this argument is false, meaning that if it is omitted from the request, the API will include all suggested relationships regardless of their current tracking status [1]. The following is an example of the request body structure: { "type": "pg_suggest_relationships", "version": 1, "args": { "omit_tracked": true, "source": "default", "tables": [["your_table_name"]] } } The source argument defaults to default if not specified [1]. This API allows you to discover relationships inferred from foreign keys in your database, which can then be formally tracked using the pg_create_object_relationship or pg_create_array_relationship APIs [1].

Hasura pg_suggest_relationships response composite foreign key columns already tracked omit_tracked
💡 Result:
The pg_suggest_relationships metadata API is designed to identify potential relationships based on existing foreign key constraints in your database [1]. Regarding your specific scenario: 1. Composite Foreign Keys: Hasura supports the creation of relationships based on composite foreign keys [2]. While historical limitations existed [3], the engine can now handle relationships involving multiple columns [2]. 2. omit_tracked Argument: The omit_tracked argument (a boolean) is a standard parameter for pg_suggest_relationships that, when set to true, filters the output to exclude relationships that are already tracked in your metadata [1]. If you are finding that pg_suggest_relationships is still returning relationships that appear to be already tracked, or if it is failing to correctly identify composite foreign key relationships, ensure that your Hasura instance is updated to a recent version. Improvements regarding the granularity of the omit_tracked argument and fixes for suggestion logic in *_suggest_relationships APIs have been included in previous releases (such as v2.19.0) [4][5]. If relationships are not being suggested automatically, they may still need to be configured manually using the pg_create_object_relationship or pg_create_array_relationship APIs, especially if they involve complex constraints or scenarios where standard foreign key inference does not apply [6][7][1].

site:github.com/hasura/graphql-engine v2.40.3 pg_suggest_relationships omit_tracked implementation
💡 Result:
The omit_tracked argument for the pg_suggest_relationships metadata API is a boolean flag used to filter the output of suggested relationships [1]. When set to true, it instructs the API to exclude relationships that are already being tracked in the Hasura metadata [1]. This functionality is part of the Hasura GraphQL Engine metadata API, which identifies potential relationships based on existing foreign key constraints in the database [2]. The omit_tracked parameter helps users manage large schemas by reducing the list of suggestions to only those that have not yet been explicitly configured or tracked [1]. While specific implementation details for v2.40.3 are not highlighted in its release notes, the argument has been available in previous versions (such as v2.19.0) to improve the granularity and management of relationship suggestions [3][4]. The API command is typically structured as follows: { "type": "pg_suggest_relationships", "args": { "source": "<database_name>", "tables": ["table_name"], "omit_tracked": true } } If you encounter issues such as "parse-failed" errors when using this API, it is often due to incorrect structuring of the tables argument (e.g., passing null instead of a valid table or list) [1].

🌐 Web query:
site:hasura.io/docs pg_suggest_relationships relationships columns composite foreign key response
💡 Result:
The pg_suggest_relationships API in Hasura is a metadata operation used to identify potential relationships within a database that can be subsequently tracked and managed by the Hasura GraphQL engine [1]. When you invoke this API, the system analyzes the database schema—including existing foreign key constraints—to suggest relationships that are not yet tracked [1][2]. Regarding composite foreign keys and column mappings: 1. Relationship Inference: Hasura automatically detects relationships based on foreign key constraints present in the underlying PostgreSQL database [3][2]. If a table uses a composite foreign key (a foreign key consisting of multiple columns), Hasura's relationship inference mechanism is designed to identify these as valid relational links between tables. 2. Tracking: Once these relationships are identified (either automatically via pg_suggest_relationships or manually), you can track them to make them available in your GraphQL schema [1][2]. 3. Manual Configuration: In cases where foreign key constraints are missing—such as when working with views, materialized views, or Native Queries—or if you need to define custom relationships that do not map directly to simple foreign keys, you can use the pg_create_object_relationship or pg_create_array_relationship APIs with a manual_configuration [3][4]. This manual configuration requires you to explicitly define the column_mapping, which supports mapping multiple columns, effectively allowing you to configure composite-style relationships manually [3][4]. In summary, while pg_suggest_relationships helps discover standard foreign-key-based relationships (including composite ones), manual configuration provides the flexibility to define specific column-to-column mappings for complex scenarios where constraints may not exist [1][3].

Handle composite foreign-key suggestions before teardown
pg_suggest_relationships includes tracked relationships by default because omit_tracked defaults to false. The pinned schema currently has only single-column foreign keys onto Authorizations. Composite suggestions contain multiple columns, so reject them or build the teardown filter from the complete column mapping. Skip suggestions with an empty to.columns array instead of interpolating undefined.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Bring the body read and the JSON parse inside the error mapping.
The try covers only fetch. Two reachable paths escape it:
- Line 211:
res.text()rejects when theAbortSignal.timeoutfires during the body read, or when the connection drops mid-body. The caller then sees a bareAbortErrorwith no path and no URL. - Line 217:
JSON.parsethrows on any non-JSON 200 body, for example an HTML error page from an intervening proxy. The message names a character offset instead of the endpoint.
Both defeat the diagnostic message this method exists to produce. The PR objectives list body-read timeout handling as a known concern, so this path is worth closing here.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
removeInvalidTag guards only Transactions, which is the regression references() documents.
The comment on references() (lines 465-479) records the earlier defect precisely: guarding only Transactions.authorizationId let a run that had sent a SendLocalList abort the DELETE on a non-cascading foreign key. This method repeats that guard. Three other foreign keys point at Authorizations on the pinned image, and LocalListAuthorizations.authorizationId is reachable whenever a local-list scenario ran with CERT023-INV in the list.
The consequence is not silent, but it is disruptive: the delete fails, gql.query throws, and provisionCommand exits 1 with a constraint name instead of provisioning the environment. That also breaks the idempotency promise stated in the file header at lines 36-38.
Route the unknown tag through the same reference discovery teardown() uses so every referencing table is checked.

Correct the SteVe integration description.
SteVe now uses its WebAPI for transaction observations and supported fixture operations. MariaDB access remains only for the four unsupported capabilities. The current text says that SteVe reads state from MariaDB without that boundary.

Update
OBSERVEDto name the data API, not Postgres. The reason string says "Postgres answers the observation".
drivers/citrineos/records.tsreads observations through the Hasura GraphQL data API, and its header records that the earlierdocker exec psqltransport was replaced. This string is reported for most scenarios, so the wording should match the transport in use.📝 Proposed change

transaction(tx)trusts an unverified filter and an unordered response. The module header states the measured filters are
chargeBoxId,ocppIdTagandtype. It does not listtransactionPk. Spring form binding ignores a parameter that the query form does not declare. If SteVe ignorestransactionPk,GET /transactionsreturns every transaction and[0]is an arbitrary row.transactionIdTag,transactionStopTimestampandtransactionStopReasonthen report another transaction's values, and the scenario assertion passes or fails for the wrong reason. The

#31
Stacked on #6, which carries the CitrineOS driver itself and the SteVe WebAPI work — this PR is only the CitrineOS half of "read the CSMS through its published API, not its database".
The driver reached into Postgres with
docker exec psqlbecause CitrineOS's REST data endpoints answer none of what the scenarios assert on (no latest transaction for a station — the one transaction route requires thetransactionIdyou are trying to find — no idTag on a transaction, no stop reason, no count, no Authorization CRUD), and the reason recorded for skipping the bundled Hasura was wrong: it is the vendor's own data path, used by their shippedpackages/ocpi-base, their operator UI and their e2e fixtures, and started ungated by their compose while the UI and OCPI server sit behindprofiles:. Records, fixtures, verification and teardown now go through it, so this driver no longer shells into a container and can be pointed at a CitrineOS nobody on the host owns.Three queries with no direct GraphQL equivalent were rebuilt rather than dropped: the three-table join behind the transaction readers is one nested query, the variant check reads the generated schema by introspection where it read
information_schema, and teardown's guard derives the foreign keys frompg_suggest_relationshipswhere it readpg_constraint— so a fifth referencing table on a future CitrineOS is still picked up.provisionbootstraps Hasura through the metadata API, acting only on the difference between what is tracked and what exists, so a re-provision writes nothing.Stated plainly, the cost: another pinned image and another published port, and no insulation from the schema — Hasura derives field names from column names, so the v1.9.1 → v2 column rename breaks these queries exactly as it broke the SQL.
Measured on the pinned image: 39
PASS, 7NOT APPLICABLE, 1FAILout of 47, the single failure being citrineos/citrineos#215; the gap table moves from 38/7/2 because the second failure was ours — TC_044'sretrieveDatemargin, fixed on #6's branch.
