It's probably easiest to review this PR by commit. If it helps I can split it into separate PRs.
The first PR extracts a few methods for improved readability. This makes it easier to isolate the different operations and see what is going on.
The second PR makes block bracket usage consistent, i.e., it uses brackets always, even for simple one line changes.
