Summary

  • generalize composed dotfile validation to compare directory-copy and symlink-each leaves with nested whole-file declarations
  • reject duplicate leaves and file/directory footprint collisions before status or apply, including target-filtered apply
  • preserve disjoint additive directory composition and existing symlink-each diagnostics
  • document the footprint rules and add unit/e2e regression coverage

Fixes the behavior reported in #12282.

Validation

  • mise run format
  • cargo test --bin mise system::files::tests::composed_
  • mise run test:e2e e2e/cli/test_bootstrap_config_roots
  • mise run lint

AI-assisted — Tool: Codex; model: openai/GPT-5; version: unavailable.

Note

Medium Risk
Touches bootstrap/dotfile apply and add validation, so mis-modeled footprints could block valid configs or still miss collisions. Behavior is otherwise additive and covered by unit/e2e tests.

Overview
Stops composed [dotfiles] from claiming the same leaf (or a file where another entry needs a directory) across directory copy, symlink-each, and nested whole-file entries.

Validation now runs on the full composed set before status, apply, edit --apply, and add—even when the command is filtered to one nested target—so a conflict cannot mutate disk or open the editor. Missing sources still reserve their target. Disjoint leaves may still share directories, and two symlink-each conflicts keep the existing diagnostic.

dotfiles add also dedupes aliased/repeated targets and validates the prospective set (preserving existing excludes on refresh) before capturing a source or writing config.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved dotfile configuration validation across file, directory-copy, and symlink-each entries.
    • Conflicting declarations, duplicate target leaves, and file-versus-directory collisions are now detected consistently.
    • Valid shared-directory configurations with distinct leaf paths remain supported.
    • Validation now occurs before editing, filtering, or applying changes, preventing partial updates.
    • Repeated or aliased add arguments are consolidated without creating conflicts.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for nested conflicts, cross-mode collisions, missing sources, preserved exclusions, and disjoint footprints.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change validates complete dotfile target footprints across file, directory-copy, and symlink-each entries. It rejects duplicate leaves and file-directory collisions before status, apply, edit, or add processing.

src/cli/dotfiles/add.rs, e2e/cli/test_bootstrap_config_roots, docs/bootstrap.md
Dotfile add deduplicates target operations, preserves existing request options, and validates prospective configurations before capture or changes. Tests and documentation describe conflict handling and valid disjoint compositions.

Greptile Summary

The PR extends composed dotfile validation across directory-copy, symlink-each, and nested whole-file declarations while validating complete prospective state before mutation.

  • Detects duplicate leaves and file/directory footprint collisions.
  • Preserves additive composition for disjoint directory leaves.
  • Validates full declaration sets before filtered apply, edit/apply, and add operations.
  • Conservatively reserves targets for unavailable sources.
  • Adds focused unit, end-to-end, and documentation coverage.

Confidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge.

No blocking failure remains; complete composed sets are now validated before filtering or mutation, and unavailable declarations retain a conservative footprint.

Important Files Changed

Filename Overview
src/system/files.rs Generalizes composed-footprint validation, including unavailable-source reservations and order-independent leaf/directory collision checks; both previously reported validation gaps are addressed.
src/cli/dotfiles/add.rs Validates the complete prospective declaration set before capture or configuration writes while preserving refreshed declaration options and deduplicating equivalent targets.
src/cli/dotfiles/apply.rs Validates all composed declarations before applying target filters, closing the previously reported subset-validation bypass.
src/cli/dotfiles/edit.rs Validates the complete set before opening the editor and again after configuration reload before applying the selected target.
src/cli/dotfiles/status.rs Replaces same-target-only symlink-each validation with generalized composed-footprint validation.
src/cli/bootstrap.rs Uses generalized footprint validation for bootstrap dotfile status.
e2e/cli/test_bootstrap_config_roots Adds regression coverage for nested collisions, pre-mutation rejection, unavailable sources, exclusion preservation, and aliased add targets.
docs/bootstrap.md Documents the expanded ownership and file-versus-directory collision rules.
