Summary

  • add opt-in global auto_update and auto_update_check_duration settings
  • update mise before eligible interactive commands and re-exec the original invocation with the new binary
  • skip CI, offline/prefer-offline, non-interactive, shell-integration, version, and unsupported contexts using canonical parsed commands
  • serialize and throttle attempts, force a fresh version lookup when due, preserve relative --cd semantics, and leave plugin updates explicit
  • keep invalid update intervals and update failures from blocking the requested command
  • promote auto-update after mise self-update and in attended mise --version output
  • strongly steer Homebrew and other third-party package builds toward official optimized binaries, with Windows-specific guidance
  • document automatic updates and optimized binaries, and regenerate the configuration schema

Tests

  • mise run lint-fix
  • cargo check --locked
  • cargo check --locked --no-default-features --features native-tls,vfox/vendored-lua
  • cargo test --locked --bin mise auto_update -- --nocapture
  • cargo test --locked --bin mise version_hint -- --nocapture
  • cargo test --locked --bin mise shell_commands_and_aliases_do_not_allow_auto_update -- --nocapture
  • mise run test:e2e e2e/cli/test_version e2e/cli/test_settings
  • attended-terminal smoke tests for official and package-managed version hints

Note

Medium Risk
Touches CLI startup and binary replacement (self-update + re-exec), which can affect every command if enabled. Risk is moderated by default-off, global-only settings, and multiple skip conditions (CI, offline, non-interactive, ineligible commands).

Overview
Adds opt-in automatic self-updates so mise can replace itself before eligible interactive commands, then re-run the original invocation with the new binary.

New global-only settings: auto_update (default off) and auto_update_check_duration (default 7d). Updates skip plugins, are throttled and lock-serialized, and are gated off in CI, offline/prefer-offline, non-interactive sessions, packager-disabled installs, and shell-integration commands (hook-env, activate, version, etc.). Failures are non-fatal.

mise version / --version and self-update now hint users toward auto-update or the official optimized binary (including Homebrew vs mise.run). Docs and schema are updated to match.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added optional automatic updates during eligible interactive commands.
    • Updates are disabled by default, configurable globally, and checked every seven days by default.
    • Commands and working directories are preserved after updates.
    • Updates are skipped in CI, offline, non-interactive, and unsupported contexts.
    • Added installation and version guidance for recommended binaries and update options.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified that official binaries are faster and smaller than Homebrew builds, which may lag behind releases.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds global settings for automatic mise updates. Startup now checks command eligibility, throttles release checks, locks concurrent updates, performs updates without plugins, and re-executes the original command. Version output now includes installation and update hints.

Then locks the path without delay.
It keeps the command and working place,
And shows the right installation hint.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on bamboo-v2-ubuntu24.04-x64-30vcpu-24gb-rust1.97.1, hook-env on bamboo-v2-ubuntu24.04-x64-30vcpu-24gb-rust1.97.1, ls on bamboo-v2-ubuntu24.04-x64-30vcpu-24gb-rust1.97.1, registry on bamboo-v2-ubuntu24.04-x64-30vcpu-24gb-rust1.97.1, startup on bamboo-v2-ubuntu24.04-x64-30vcpu-24gb-rust1.97.1

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

dc55546831ed vs ea2f7d681c64 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
