The bug

docs/tasks/file-tasks.md shows this under Shebang:

#!/usr/bin/env pwsh
#MISE description="Hello, World in PowerShell"

$current_directory = Get-Location
Write-Host "Hello from PowerShell, current directory is $current_directory"

Placed verbatim in mise-tasks/hello on Windows, it does not run:

$ mise task ls
hello  Hello, World in PowerShell

$ mise run hello
[hello] $ ...\mise-tasks\hello
Processing -File '...\mise-tasks\hello' failed because the file does not have a
'.ps1' extension. Specify a valid PowerShell script file name, and then try again.
[hello] ERROR task failed (exit 64)

mise finds the task and reads its #MISE header, then hands it to pwsh under a name
pwsh will not open. What reaches the user is PowerShell's message about a flag mise
passed, with no indication of what to change.

The same task with shell = "pwsh -c" fails without saying anything at all — exit 0,
no output, no error:

$ mise run hello
[hello] $ ...\mise-tasks\hello
$ echo $LASTEXITCODE
0

The extension rule is PowerShell's script resolution, not one reading of it: -File
opens the path, -Command resolves it as a command, and both ask for .ps1. So the two
modes are one bug, and the -Command half is the dangerous one — a task that reports
success having done nothing.

It is the Windows build of pwsh, not pwsh

Same version on both sides — pwsh 7.6.5:

pwsh -File <no extension> kernel shebang (./task)
Linux (Ubuntu 24.04) ✅ exit 0 ✅ exit 0
Windows ❌ exit 64 — (Windows has no kernel shebang)

So #!/usr/bin/env pwsh works on Linux and macOS and fails only here. Windows has no
kernel shebang either, which means mise is the one starting the interpreter — and the
one that has to hand it a name pwsh accepts.

Controls, all measured through mise on Windows:

task result
#!/usr/bin/env bash, #!/bin/sh, #!/usr/bin/env node, no extension ✅
#!/usr/bin/env pwsh, .ps1 extension ✅
no shebang, .ps1 extension ✅
.ps1 + shell = "pwsh -c" ✅ args forwarded
.cmd + cmd /c (the Windows default file shell) ✅ args forwarded
#!/usr/bin/env pwsh, no extension ❌ exit 64
no extension + shell = "pwsh -c" ❌ exit 0, nothing done

Why a copy

Four ways to give pwsh an extensionless script were measured; one survives:

attempt result
pwsh -File <no extension> exit 64
pwsh -Command "& '<path>'" exit 0, no output
pwsh -Command ". '<path>'" exit 0, no output
pwsh -File - (script on stdin) exit 64, cannot take args
temp .ps1 copy ✅ works under both -File and -c, $args preserved

So the fix runs the task from a .ps1 copy in the temp directory, held by a
tempfile::TempPath across the spawn and deleted when it drops. Unix is untouched:
ps1_shim returns None there, so the file is still run in place.

Cost, measured

Only the script's view of its own location moves:

                 in place                          from the copy
PSCommandPath    ...\mise-tasks\probe.ps1          %TEMP%\mise-task-probe-….ps1
PSScriptRoot     ...\mise-tasks                    %TEMP%
cwd              ...\mise-tasks    (unchanged)     ...\mise-tasks    (unchanged)
args[0]          ARG1                              ARG1

Working directory, $args and the environment are unaffected — so relative paths, which
resolve against cwd, keep working. A task that needs to find files sitting next to itself
should carry a .ps1 extension, which is run in place. That is now written down in
docs/tasks/file-tasks.md.

Changes

  • src/task/task_executor.rs — the file shell is resolved once, from the path the user
    wrote, and that answer drives both the staging decision and the command line;
    get_file_program_and_args takes the resolved shell rather than working it out again, since
    re-resolving from a staged copy would let shell_from_extension answer pwsh -File where the
    original had taken its shell elsewhere. ps1_shim follows the #[cfg]-inside-one-function
    shape already used by maybe_convert_env_for_msys_shell in the same file, keeping the call
    site OS-agnostic. crate::path::is_powershell_program and crate::file::os_can_launch_extension
    are reused as-is.
  • e2e-win/task_pwsh_shebang.Tests.ps1 — new, modelled on task_bom.Tests.ps1.
  • docs/tasks/file-tasks.md — a note on the copy and what it means for $PSScriptRoot.

A name the OS can start is left alone. PowerShell resolves foo.cmd and foo.exe as
commands and runs them correctly, so they need no rename — and staging one as .ps1 would hand
batch syntax to the PowerShell parser, which fails and still exits 0. That case is reachable
through use_file_shell_for_executable_tasks with a PowerShell default file shell, and it has
its own test.

Test

The suite was run against the unfixed 2026.8.10 first, to check the new cases fail for the
right reason rather than by accident:

Describing file tasks whose shebang names pwsh
  [-] runs an extensionless task whose shebang names pwsh
      Expected regular expression 'pwsh ran: ARG1' to match <empty>
  [-] runs a pwsh task whose shell is in -Command mode
      Expected regular expression 'command mode ran: ARG1' to match <empty>
  [+] still runs the .ps1 sibling
  [+] still runs a bash shebang task
  [+] leaves a batch task alone when the file shell is PowerShell
  [+] leaves no copy behind in the temp directory
Tests Passed: 4, Failed: 2

Two failures for the two bugs, four passing controls. The -Command case is asserted on what
the task printed rather than on its exit code — it exits 0, so an exit-code check would pass
against the bug. The batch case passes before and after by design: it is a guard against
staging a file that never needed it, not a reproduction.

I have not built this locally: cargo check cannot run on this machine (libz-ng-sys
needs cmake, which is not installed), so the type check and the post-fix behaviour are for
CI. Everything reported above as measured was measured against released binaries and pwsh
itself, not against a build of this branch.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Extensionless PowerShell file tasks now run on Windows through temporary .ps1 copies. Shell resolution is centralized. Windows end-to-end tests verify execution, arguments, cleanup, and preserved execution context. Documentation describes the behavior.

A file task run by pwsh could not work on Windows unless its name ended
in .ps1. With -File it failed loudly:

    Processing -File '...\mise-tasks\hello' failed because the file does
    not have a '.ps1' extension.

and with shell = "pwsh -c" it failed silently -- exit 0, no output, no
error. Either way that is the shape docs/tasks/file-tasks.md shows under
Shebang, and mise finds the task and reads its #MISE header before
failing to start it.

The extension rule is PowerShell's script resolution itself, not one
reading of it: -File opens the path and -Command resolves it as a
command, and both ask for .ps1. Measured on the same pwsh 7.6.5, an
extensionless script runs on Linux -- via -File and via the kernel
shebang -- and is refused on Windows, so the rule is the Windows build's
alone. Windows has no kernel shebang either, so mise is the one starting
the interpreter and the one that has to hand it a name pwsh will accept:
a .ps1 copy in the temp directory, deleted when the task finishes. Unix
keeps running the file in place.

A name the OS can start already is left alone. PowerShell resolves a
.cmd or .exe as a command and runs it correctly, so it needs no rename,
and staging one as .ps1 would hand batch syntax to the PowerShell parser
-- which fails while still exiting 0.

The file shell is resolved once, from the file the user wrote, and that
answer drives both the staging decision and the command line. Resolving
a second time from the staged copy would let shell_from_extension answer
"pwsh -File" where the original had taken its shell elsewhere.

Only the script's view of itself moves -- $PSScriptRoot and
$PSCommandPath name the copy. Working directory, $args and environment
are unchanged.
