fix(lock): point at --global when only global config has tools - #12260
Conversation
`mise lock` scopes to the active project config root and drops every global config path, so a config that only exists globally produced a bare "No tools configured to lock" with no hint that `mise lock --global` would work. This is most confusing in the dotfiles layout from #12250, where ~/.config/mise/config.toml is a symlink to a repo's own mise.toml. The two paths reach one file, `is_global_config` matches it through the desymlinked comparison, and the merged config counts as global — so `mise lock` run from inside the repo reports nothing to lock while `mise ls` happily resolves the tools. Detect the case from the resolved toolset and name the command that works. Global lockfiles stay explicit via `--global`, as documented. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The new rm commands here and at line 77 duplicate cleanup already owned by the E2E harness, making these scenarios depend on manual fixture lifecycle management.

Not changing this one — these rms are setup, not teardown.
The AGENTS.md rule ("E2E tests do not need cleanup steps") is about end-of-test teardown, which the harness handles by giving each test its own directory. Within a single test file, scenarios share that directory, so resetting config state between them is what makes the next scenario meaningful — removing mise.toml is precisely what creates the "no project-scoped tools" condition being tested. Dropping those lines would silently invalidate the scenarios rather than tidy them.
This also matches the pre-existing convention in this same file, which already does rm -f mise.lock "$MISE_CONFIG_DIR/mise.lock" system-config/mise.lock between its two scenarios.

You're right — I misread these as teardown. They're inter-scenario state resets that establish the preconditions for the next case, and removing them would silently invalidate the scenarios. The distinction from teardown (which the harness handles) is clear. Thanks for the clarification.

`mise lock node` could point at `mise lock --global` because the hint scanned every global tool, not the ones the run asked for. Filter by the selector, so the hint still fires for `mise lock jq` when jq is global-only but stays quiet for a tool that isn't in global config at all. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`mise lock --local` targets mise.local.lock and has no global equivalent, so pointing it at `mise lock --global` steered users out of the scope they asked for. Suppress the hint there. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Closes the confusion in #12250.
Problem
mise lockscopes to the active project config root and filters out every global config path (src/cli/lock.rsconfig_paths_in_lock_scope). When the only configs in scope are global, there are no lockfile targets and it prints a bare! No tools configured to lock— with no hint thatmise lock --globalis the command that works. This is most confusing in the dotfiles layout from the discussion, where
~/.config/mise/config.tomlis a symlink to the repo's ownmise.toml:is_global_configstill matches it, via thedesymlink_pathcomparison inconfig_set_contains(added for symlinked prefixes like Fedora Atomic's/home->/var/home). That's the right call — the file genuinely is the global config, and it needs global-only settings honored.mise lockrun from inside the repo reports nothing to lock, whilemise lsresolves the tools fine. The reporter had to fall back toMISE_CONFIG_DIR="$(mktemp -d)" mise lock.Change
Detect the case from the resolved toolset and name the command that works:
Global lockfiles stay explicit via
--global, as documented — no scoping behavior changes. The message also improves the plain case of standing in a directory with no project config while the real global config declares tools.Verified
mise lock --globalwrites the lockfile beside the symlink target (~/dotfiles/mise.lock) with concrete versions, checksums, URLs, and provenance, so the reporter's stale-entry problem is fixed without theMISE_CONFIG_DIRworkaround.Tests
Four cases added to
e2e/cli/test_lock_global, all passing:mise.toml, run from the repo -> hint, then--globallocks it todotfiles/mise.lock--globalhintcargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warningsandcargo test --bin mise cli::lockare clean.Docs get a short "Global Lockfiles" section covering the symlinked-dotfiles case.

Note
Low Risk
CLI messaging and docs only; lockfile scoping and writes are unchanged. Risk is limited to a misleading hint in edge cases, which the new e2e coverage targets.
Overview
When
mise lockfinds nothing in project scope, it now tells you to runmise lock --globalif tools actually live in global (or system) config. Locking behavior is unchanged; this is a message-only fix for the empty-project and symlinked-dotfiles cases. The hint is skipped for
--local/--globalruns, when nothing is configured anywhere, and when a tool selector does not match a globally declared tool. Docs add a short Global Lockfiles section coveringmise lock --globaland writing the lockfile next to a symlink target.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 703d1b8.
