Instruction counts
No instruction-count regression above 1%. Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run. Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

location to document that MISE_SYSTEM_DATA_DIR can override the default data
directory, with tools stored under its installs subdirectory. Preserve the
existing distinction between shared storage and system-wide Homebrew-style
installation.
- Around line 385-386: Update the documentation around the “one version on PATH”
comparison to qualify mise install-into: it installs to an exact destination
without modifying the shell PATH, so state that users must add the resulting
binary directory to PATH themselves.
- Around line 382-383: Clarify the documentation sentence near the runtime tool
setup guidance by explicitly stating that users must manually configure
environment variables such as JAVA_HOME and any other runtime settings normally
configured by mise. Replace the ambiguous “that” and “that set up” wording
without changing the surrounding guidance.
- Line 359: Rename the FAQ heading to “Can other users run tools installed by
mise without using mise?” and update the corresponding link text and fragment in
the Docker cookbook to match the new heading.

The heading uses tools mise installed, which is unclear. Rename it to Can other users run tools installed by mise without using mise?. Update the link text and fragment in docs/mise-cookbook/docker.md Line 44 in the same change.

…stall Users repeatedly read `mise install --system` as a Homebrew-style system-wide install and are surprised that every user still needs mise activated to run the tools (discussion #8596). The flag only changes where tools are stored so users share one copy; resolution still happens through mise at runtime. Say that explicitly in the flag help and the docker cookbook, and add a FAQ entry for the two features that do install binaries usable without mise: `[bootstrap.packages]` with `brew:` entries, which pours bottles into the canonical Homebrew prefix without requiring Homebrew, and `mise install-into`. Also note that `[bootstrap.packages]` can install the OS libraries the "mise is for dev tools" FAQ says to install by hand. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
In discussion #8596 more than one person has read
mise install --systemas a Homebrew-style system-wide install, then been surprised that other users still need mise activated to run the tools. The most recent comment abandoned a Linuxbrew → mise migration over it:That reading is accurate —
--systemonly redirects the install dir toMISE_SYSTEM_DATA_DIR/installsso N users don't download N copies; version resolution still happens through mise. Nothing in the flag help or docs said so, and nothing pointed at the features that do install binaries usable without mise.Changes
--systemflag help and the docker cookbook now say plainly that the flag shares the install location and does not put binaries onPATHfor use without mise.New FAQ entry, How do I install tools other users can run without mise?, covering the two features that do:
[bootstrap.packages]withbrew:entries — pours bottles into the canonical prefix with the usual<prefix>/binlinks and needs no Homebrew installed, plusmise bootstrap packages import --manager brewto migrate an existing Linuxbrew setup.mise install-into— one tool version into a directory you pick, any backend. It also names the trade both make (one version on
PATH, no per-project selection) and points atmise bootstrap/bootstrap remotefor converging per-user setup when you want the mise model instead. The "mise is for dev tools, not applications or system packages" FAQ said to install OS libraries by hand; it now notes
[bootstrap.packages]can declare them, while keeping the[tools]boundary intact.Docs-only; no behavior change.
docs/cli/install.md,mise.usage.kdl, andman/man1/mise.1are regenerated from the help-text change.AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-fable-5; version: unavailable.
Note
Low Risk
Docs and clap help text only; no runtime or install behavior changes.
Overview
Clarifies that
mise install --systemis a shared install cache, not a Homebrew-style system PATH install. Users still need mise at runtime.Adds a FAQ on installing tools others can run without mise:
[bootstrap.packages]brew:entries (canonical prefix, no Homebrew required) andmise install-into. Also notes[bootstrap.packages]for OS libraries while keeping them out of[tools].The same
--systemwording is mirrored in clap help, generated CLI/man docs, and the Docker cookbook.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit af549f5. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
Summary by CodeRabbit
PATH.miseis still required to run tools installed with the system option.mise install-intoand[bootstrap.packages]as alternatives for standalone tools usable withoutmise.
