fix(config): restore unconditional dotted conf.d fragments - #12242
Conversation
2026.8.9 started reading the component before `.toml` in `conf.d` filenames as an environment selector, so fragments like `x.base.toml` silently dropped out of the config stack with no warning and no migration path. Restore the previous behavior: every non-hidden TOML file in `.mise/conf.d` and `.config/mise/conf.d` loads unconditionally again. Dotted fragment names now emit a `deprecated_at!` warning pointing at hyphenated names, and the environment-suffix semantics become the default in 2027.8.10. Add an early-init `env_conf_d` setting (`MISE_ENV_CONF_D`) so the new semantics can be opted into immediately, or explicitly declined with `env_conf_d = false` to silence the warning during the migration window. Instruction countsNothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does. New, nothing to compare against: Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run. Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

`parse_config_file` warned on any dotted `conf.d` fragment whenever `env_conf_d` was unset. After the 2027.8.10 default flip that would fire for files loading correctly because their environment is active, so gate the warning on the legacy default still being in effect. Also name the whole `miserc.toml` family rather than only the project-local `.miserc.toml`, since the setting is read from the merged early-init config, and document the mode dependence of the `conf.d` bullets in the config file list. Fixes the regression reported in #12232.
What broke
#12151 taught
conf.dto read the filename component before.tomlas an environment selector. That silently changed the meaning of every existing dotted fragment: as of 2026.8.9,~/.config/mise/conf.d/x.base.tomlstopped loading unlessMISE_ENVcontainedbase. No warning, no migration window — tools just disappeared from the config stack. That was my mistake. The new syntax is fine; shipping it as an immediate reinterpretation of filenames people already had on disk was not.
What this does
Restores the old behavior as the default. Every non-hidden
.tomlfile in.mise/conf.dand.config/mise/conf.dloads unconditionally again, dots included.Deprecates dotted unconditional names via
deprecated_at!("2026.8.10", "2027.8.10", ...). The warning points at hyphenated names (node-tools.tomlrather thannode.tools.toml).Adds an early-init
env_conf_dsetting (MISE_ENV_CONF_D) so the new semantics are available immediately:env_conf_d = true— opt into environment-specificconf.dfilenames now.env_conf_d = false— keep the legacy behavior and silence the deprecation warning. It has to be set in
.miserc.tomlor the environment, since config discovery happens beforemise.tomlis read. The dotted-name ambiguity is worth resolving eventually — that's what the 12-month window is for — but not by breaking working setups in a patch release.

Note
Medium Risk
Changes which config files are discovered and merged, so a wrong default or setting would drop or reintroduce fragments. The change is gated and covered by e2e tests, but it still sits on the config-loading path.
Overview
Restores loading every non-hidden
conf.dTOML fragment by default, undoing the silent break where names likex.base.tomlwere treated as environment selectors.Environment-specific
conf.dsuffixes are now opt-in via early-initenv_conf_d/MISE_ENV_CONF_D(must be set inmiserc.tomlor the environment). Unset keeps the old behavior until 2027.8.10; dotted unconditional names warn during the window.env_conf_d = falsesilences the warning.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 46a51cc.
