- Around line 10-18: Unset the inherited NO_HOOK_ENV_PROBE variable before
invoking probe for the --no-hook-env assertion, so the check starts from an
unset environment and only observes activation behavior. Keep the existing probe
function and assertion unchanged.
- Around line 12-14: Update the probe function so it captures the output and
exit status of mise activate bash $1, then checks both the activation and eval
statuses before printing NO_HOOK_ENV_PROBE; propagate a non-zero activation
failure instead of treating an empty generated script as successful.

mise activate bash --no-hook-envapplies the config's environment anyway. The other three shells do not.Measured, one tool configured and installed, checking whether it lands on
PATHat activation:--no-hook-envAnd with an
[env]entry rather than a tool, which is the plainer statement of it:Not a design choice — the call moved
bash used to match the others. Before
src/assets/bash/activate.shexisted,bash.rsemitted the activation-time call inside the flag's guard:48e5dd59ca7d— "fix(bash): avoid duplicate trust warning after cd" (#8920) — extracted that script into the asset file, and the call came out from under the guard on the way. The subject of that change was duplicate trust warnings;--no-hook-envis not mentioned in it.Nothing pins the current behaviour either: the test that same commit added,
e2e/env/test_bash_first_prompt_after_activate, activates with--status, not with the flag, and no bash test covers--no-hook-envat all.e2e/cli/test_activate_exportdoes use it, but only to check__MISE_EXE, which is exported at the top of the script outside any guard — unaffected by this change. The flag's own summary line is "Do not automatically call hook-env". Applying the environment at activation is calling hook-env.
The change
The call joins the guard that immediately follows it — the one already setting
__MISE_BASH_SKIP_FIRST_PROMPT, which exists because_mise_hookjust ran, so the two belong under one condition:Test
e2e/env/test_bash_no_hook_envasserts an[env]entry is not applied with the flag, and — the control — that it is without it, so the first check cannot pass against a mise that never applies the environment at all. Verified against the current release: it fails there with--no-hook-env applied the environment at activation: NO_HOOK_ENV_PROBE=applied, which is the bug.Draft
Opened as a draft: this changes what an existing flag does for bash users. The history says the current behaviour is accidental, but somebody may have come to rely on activating with
--no-hook-envand still getting their tools — worth your call before it lands. No local build was run — this machine cannot build mise, so type checking and the snapshot are CI's. The measurements above are all from released binaries.
