Remote include provenance persists through resolution. CLI paths and end-to-end tests enforce these rules and verify request, cache, and cleanup behavior. ChangesRemote task trust and provenance
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to This PR changes passive task discovery to use trust-based gates before remote metadata work, but the current head still has bounded merge-readiness risks: task-name misses and dependency fallbacks can multiply network or Git refreshes, nested task injection repeats large allocations, CLI fallback behavior can change, hidden tasks may appear in default listings, and passive safe-mode Git handling can weaken the intended trust boundary. Merge should wait for fixes or explicit owner acceptance of these runtime and security trade-offs. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

Treat matcher errors as misses in get_command.
get_matching returns an empty result for valid misses but returns an error for malformed workspace patterns and invalid monorepo patterns. Each ? exits before the external-command lookup and final help fallback. Use .is_ok_and(|matches| !matches.is_empty()) for both checks.

fetch_task_map fetches every remote task to resolve one name miss.
fetch_task_map calls fetch_tasks over the whole task map. Each remote task in the map triggers an HTTP request or a Git clone. The callers invoke this only on a lookup miss, but a miss is the common case for a mistyped name.
Concretely, src/cli/mod.rs line 849 reaches this branch for any bare argument that is neither a known subcommand nor a local task. So mise buidl in a trusted repo with several remote task includes now performs one fetch per remote task before it prints "no task found". src/task/task_list.rs line 554, src/cli/tasks/info.rs, and resolve_depends in src/task/mod.rs share the same amplification.
Consider narrowing the retry, for example by fetching only tasks whose declared file is remote and whose local name did not already match, and by caching a negative result for the command so repeated misses in one invocation do not refetch.

Avoid the unconditional deep clone of the task map.
Line 1015 clones the whole BTreeMap<String, Task> on every call to inject_and_wait, even when every spec already resolves. Task is a large struct with many Vec, IndexMap, and Arc fields, and inject_and_wait runs once for each nested RunEntry::SingleTask and each RunEntry::TaskGroup. A task graph with many nested calls therefore copies the full task map repeatedly.
Detect the missing specs from the borrowed map, and clone only when a remote fetch is required.

Apply visibility filtering after remote metadata resolution.
A remote #MISE hide = true value is available only after fetch_tasks. The existing pre-fetch filter keeps that task in the default output. Fetch the candidate tasks first, then apply the hidden filter and sorting.

The header-template gate used trust_check, which is a no-op in safe mode, so an ungated fetch path could still render untrusted remote templates under MISE_SAFE=1. Use trust_check_remote_fetch so the gate matches the fetch gate's safe-mode semantics. Also drop the write-only remote_metadata_has_tools field; its consumers land in a later PR.
mise cache task and mise cache clear <task> are passive inspection commands but resolved tasks with an ungated TaskFetcher, so an untrusted config could trigger remote HTTP/Git fetches.
watch expanded task dependencies (fetching remote task files) in its own process before the spawned mise run hit the safe-mode check, leaving a remote fetch reachable under MISE_SAFE=1 with an untrusted config. Fail up front like mise run does.
Under MISE_PARANOID=1 an untrusted config already fails at parse time, so the non-safe assertions never reached the fetch gate. Add non-paranoid untrusted cases (plain-tasks config bodies parse trust-exempt), cover tasks info/validate, cache task, and safe-mode watch, and assert the git-includes safe-mode failure is the trust error.

Safe mode is documented as a code-execution boundary, not a network one: an untrusted config can already resolve and download arbitrary URLs there through the HTTP-based backends (`mise install` fetches an http-backend tool's artifact to disk without trust; docs/security.md says so on purpose). Requiring trust before a remote task fetch specifically was therefore inconsistent with a capability the same untrusted config already has in the same mode, and it broke passive task introspection wholesale — one remote task made `mise tasks ls` fail for every task, including local ones. Gate the fetch with a plain trust_check instead, so safe mode waives it like any other parse-time check while normal mode keeps the interactive prompt that closes the unprompted-RCE hole. Rendering the fetched header keeps the safe-mode-aware gate: that is where a remote header can execute code, read files, or interpolate the process env into printed metadata, and unlike a local template the payload is invisible in the config that names it and can vary per request. This mirrors task_include_requires_trust, which already treats template-free task files as inert and asks for trust only when a file contains templates. Rename trust_check_remote_fetch to trust_check_remote_content since it no longer guards fetching. Cloning a `git::` include stays gated in safe mode: its tasks render behind task_include_requires_trust, whose trust_check safe mode waives, so that clone gate is currently the only render protection there.
…osed
Three defects in the trust gates, found reviewing the safe-mode split.
`#USAGE include` was an ungated second channel. The render gate only
scanned decoded `#MISE` entries, but usage specs are parsed for display
on the same passive paths and usage-lib resolves `include file="/abs"`,
reading an arbitrary file and echoing part of it in the parse error.
Allowing the fetch in safe mode made that reachable from an untrusted
config. Gate on the whole header instead: remote_header_requires_trust
covers a decoded template or a `#USAGE include`.
The passive fetch gate acquired trust instead of authorizing it.
trust_check prompts and, under `MISE_YES=1`, silently writes a trust
record for the entire config root -- so a read-only `mise tasks ls`
permanently unlocked env, hooks and templates for that directory.
Passive commands are deliberately absent from
implicitly_trusts_active_config; use a non-persisting check
(remote_fetch_allowed) that safe mode still waives.
is_trusted blanket-trusts everything under CI, which made the
safe-mode-aware gate a no-op in exactly the environment safe mode
exists for -- a bot listing tasks from an untrusted PR branch rendered
its remote header, and `{{ get_env(...) }}` is not stubbed the way
exec() is. Keep the CI shortcut out of safe mode.
Also correct the `git::` include comment: passing that clone gate clears
require_task_include_trust for the whole include set, so nothing renders
behind it -- the gate is all there is, which is a stronger reason to keep
it than the one the comment gave.

Keep passive remote fetch authorization non-acquiring in every mode.
Line 488 authorizes every defining configuration in safe mode. Therefore, Line 123 in src/task/task_fetcher.rs can fetch an untrusted HTTP or Git task during passive discovery. Line 4571 also calls trust_check_remote_content, which delegates to acquiring trust_check outside safe mode. With MISE_YES=1, a passive task-loading command can persist trust before it fetches a git:: include.
Use a non-acquiring trusted-path check for passive remote sources. Do not exempt safe mode. Reserve acquiring trust_check for explicit trust or execution flows.

Reverts the `is_trusted` hunk of b96801d. Changing a core trust primitive for one gate's benefit was the wrong place for it, and the change was inconsistent besides: - CI auto-trust is how mise works in CI, and `docs/security.md` states that safe mode does not require trust at all. Making trust newly matter there redefines a documented guarantee, with no way out in CI (no TTY, and trusting an untrusted PR checkout defeats the point). - It only closed the leak for remote headers. A local untrusted config in safe mode interpolates `{{ env.SECRET }}` into a description that `tasks ls` prints, exactly the same way -- so the fix addressed a subset of a broader pre-existing safe-mode property. - Paranoid mode already is the mechanism for this: its branch in `is_trusted` runs before the CI shortcut, so `MISE_PARANOID=1` enforces the remote-content gates in CI today. Verified. The other two fixes in b96801d stand: they are local to this PR's own gates and do not touch shared trust semantics.

…4416) Listing the tasks of a directory you have not trusted could run a command from a remote task file. A `mise.toml` that holds only `[tasks]` loads without trust, so this is enough: ```toml # mise.toml in a freshly cloned, untrusted repository [tasks.build] file = "https://example.com/build.sh" ``` ```bash #!/usr/bin/env bash #MISE description="{{ exec(command='touch /tmp/PWNED') }}Build" ``` `mise tasks ls`, `mise tasks info build` and `mise tasks validate` downloaded `build.sh` and rendered its `#MISE` headers, so `exec()` ran with no trust prompt. The same template written in `mise.toml` itself, or in a local task file such as `mise-tasks/build.sh`, is already refused until the config is trusted. A remote task file now follows the rule for local task includes. When its `#MISE` headers contain template syntax, the config that names it must be trusted before they render. In an untrusted directory, mise asks to trust it, or fails with `Config files in … are not trusted` when it cannot ask, and nothing renders. Only the headers are checked, because only they render: braces elsewhere in the script, such as `docker ps --format '{{.Names}}'`, need no trust. They are read the same way when a `git::` file is named `*.toml`. A remote file with no template in its headers still lists without trust, and a trusted config renders as before. `mise run` keeps trusting the config it runs, as it does for local tasks. Safe mode still waives trust, since `exec()` and `read_file()` are disabled there. #12202 (and #11113 before it) by @risu729 reported this and proposed a wider rework of remote task metadata, which pr-closer closed. This is a narrower fix built on main's existing trust check for task includes. They are credited as co-author. ## Validation - New `e2e/tasks/test_task_remote_http_trust`, with the remote files served from a local HTTP server: - In an untrusted directory, `mise tasks ls`, `mise tasks info` and `mise tasks validate` each fail with `not trusted`, and the `exec()` marker file is not created. - A remote file whose headers have no template still lists without trust, with `{{.Names}}` in its script body. - With the config trusted, a templated remote file renders. - Unit test `test_header_checks_ignore_the_file_name`: an escaped template in the header of a file named `evil.toml` needs trust (read as a TOML document, the header is a comment), and a template in the script body does not. - On Linux, in a `rust:1` container, the test passes with this branch's build. Run against the released 2026.10.8, the same test fails with `remote task template executed by untrusted 'mise tasks ls'`. - `cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings` passes. *AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: unavailable.* 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit - **Security** - Remote task files that require trust are checked before loading. Summary
mise tasks ls/info/deps/validate, plusmise cache task/mise cache clear <task>)mise watchunder safe mode instead of expanding dependencies before the spawnedmise runrefusesSafe mode
Safe mode is a code-execution boundary, not a network boundary. An untrusted config can already resolve and download arbitrary URLs there through the HTTP-based backends —
mise installwrites an http-backend tool's artifact to disk with no trust, anddocs/security.mddocuments that as intended somise lockcan run against pull-request config. Gating the remote task fetch specifically would have contradicted a capability the same untrusted config already has in the same mode, and it broke passive introspection wholesale: a single remote task mademise tasks lsfail for every task, including local ones.So the split is:
remote_fetch_allowed: safe mode waives it, otherwise the defining config must already be trusted. This authorizes rather than acquires: passive discovery deliberately does not usetrust_check, because its prompt (orMISE_YES=1) would persist trust for the whole config root and turn a read-onlymise tasks lsinto a permanent grant of env, hooks and templates. Passive commands are absent fromimplicitly_trusts_active_configfor the same reason.trust_check_remote_content, which safe mode does not waive, applied whenremote_header_requires_trustsays the fetched header can do something before anyone runs the task. Two channels can: a decoded#MISEtemplate (renders at discovery — code execution, file reads, process env interpolated into printed metadata) and a#USAGE include, which usage-lib resolves against an arbitrary absolute path while the spec is parsed for display. Unlike a local template, the payload is invisible in the config that names it and can vary per request.Trust in CI
These gates are trust-based, so in CI they are inert:
is_trustedblanket-trusts any checkout underCI=true, which is how mise works in CI generally.MISE_PARANOID=1is the existing mechanism if you want trust enforced there — its branch runs before the CI shortcut, so the gates do hold under paranoid (verified).Worth being explicit that safe mode alone does not stop metadata from interpolating the process env into printed output:
exec()andread_file()are stubbed, but{{ env.X }}/get_env()are not, so a description can carry a secret into CI logs. That is a pre-existing property of safe mode and applies identically to a plain local config, so it is not addressed here. This mirrors
task_include_requires_trust, which already treats template-free task files as inert and asks for trust only when a file contains templates.Cloning a
git::include stays gated in safe mode. Passing that gate marks the includes authorized, which clearsrequire_task_include_trustfor the whole include set, so tasks from the clone render with no further check — the clone gate is all there is. Relaxing it means first giving included tasks their own safe-mode-aware render gate and decoupling that fromremote_includes_authorized, so it is left as follow-up.The
mise watchchange is a fail-fast/UX fix rather than a security fix — watch is useless in safe mode either way, since themise runit spawns refuses; erroring up front just avoids the pointless dependency expansion first. (Its commit message overstates this; treat this section as the accurate framing.)Root cause
#11111 began parsing remote task headers during discovery. Passive discovery could then perform HTTP or Git work before the local config selecting that task had been trusted, and nested remote task files could lose the original trust authority.
