MISE_BREW_CASK_OPT_APPDIR env var to override the default brew cask application install location

as discussed #12036

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • macOS Homebrew cask applications can now be installed in a configurable destination using MISE_BREW_CASK_OPT_APPDIR.
    • Applications targeting /Applications are relocated while preserving subdirectories; existing Homebrew-prefix paths remain unchanged.
    • Invalid destination paths are rejected, with /Applications used by default.
    • Cask installation and upgrades now provide safer handling of application directories and symlinks.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance for configuring the cask application installation directory.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for default, custom, invalid, prefix-based, and macOS CI installation locations.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds MISE_BREW_CASK_OPT_APPDIR support for macOS cask applications. It validates configured paths, relocates /Applications targets, preserves Homebrew-prefix targets, uses descriptor-bound filesystem operations, and adds tests and documentation.

Changes

Homebrew cask app directory

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cask target resolution
src/system/packages/brew/cask.rs
Cask targets use validated application roots. Absolute /Applications targets relocate while preserving subdirectories. Homebrew-prefix targets remain unchanged. Related wrapper, binary, and prune paths use the configured roots.
Descriptor-bound app operations
src/system/packages/brew/cask.rs
App staging, copying, replacement, rollback, removal, permission repair, and ownership recovery use verified directory descriptors and symlink-safe traversal.
Elevated directory execution
src/system/sudo.rs, src/system/packages/brew/cask.rs
Elevated commands run with a caller-provided directory descriptor. Cask subprocess handling uses descriptor-bound execution.
Validation and verification
src/system/packages/brew/cask.rs, src/test.rs, e2e/cli/test_system_install_brew_cask_appdir_slow, docs/bootstrap/packages/brew.md
Tests and documentation cover defaults, overrides, invalid paths, relocation, prefix targets, root deduplication, symlink resistance, and descriptor-bound copying.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 17d09

The change adds configurable Homebrew cask application directories, but several Unix-specific tests are not platform-gated and can prevent the test suite from compiling on Windows; those guards should be added before merging. The error-message wording issue is minor and non-blocking.

Poem

A rabbit checks each cask-bound trace,
And moves /Applications to its place.
Descriptors guard each hop and door,
While symlinks cannot change the floor.
Tests and docs record the way.

Greptile Summary

The PR adds a configurable Homebrew cask application directory and hardens application installation, replacement, permission repair, and removal using descriptor-relative filesystem operations.

  • Adds MISE_BREW_CASK_OPT_APPDIR validation, canonicalization, and target relocation.
  • Keeps app mutations bound to trusted directory descriptors and avoids traversing bundle symlinks during recursive repair.
  • Adds unit and macOS end-to-end coverage plus user documentation.

Confidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge.

No blocking failure remains.

Important Files Changed

Filename Overview
src/system/packages/brew/cask.rs Implements configurable app destinations and descriptor-bound app mutation helpers; the previously reported containment and recursive-symlink issues are addressed at current HEAD.
src/system/sudo.rs Adds descriptor-bound elevated command execution so relative repair targets remain anchored to the verified application directory.
src/test.rs Adds an environment-variable guard that restores test process state after each scoped mutation.
e2e/cli/test_system_install_brew_cask_appdir_slow Verifies on macOS CI that a cask is installed into the override directory without touching its default application target.
docs/bootstrap/packages/brew.md Documents the app-directory override, validation constraints, relocation behavior, and Homebrew-prefix exception.

Make the component rejection message context-neutral.

open_trusted_directory is now shared by generic artifacts and by ensure_trusted_appdir. A rejected component in an app directory path reports brew-cask: invalid generic artifact parent, which points the user at the wrong feature.
