Summary

  • expose the resolved task prefix style as MISE_TASK_COLOR
  • share one color/style resolver between prefix rendering and task environments
  • keep the value empty when colors or prefix-style output are disabled

Context

Task prefix colors were deterministic, but the resolved style was internal to mise. Task scripts that wanted matching output had to duplicate the display-name hash, palette, and emphasis rules.

MISE_TASK_COLOR now contains the complete ANSI opening sequence used by the task label, including bold, dim, or bright styling. It is injected per task occurrence as a reserved runtime value, so ambient or configured values cannot make it disagree with the rendered label and a parent task's color does not leak into nested tasks. The value is empty for interleaved, quiet, silent, or raw output and when color is disabled. Replacing output also provides the value through its text fallback because the variable describes the rendered task-label style rather than promising that every output line is prefixed.

Verification

  • mise exec -- cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • mise exec -- cargo test --all-features ui::style::tests
  • mise exec -- cargo test --all-features task::task_output_handler::tests
  • mise run test:e2e e2e/tasks/test_task_prefix_color e2e/tasks/test_task_run_output e2e/tasks/test_task_output_style_decoupling e2e/tasks/test_task_prefix_args_disambiguation
  • mise exec -- cargo check --all-features
  • mise exec -- shellcheck e2e/tasks/test_task_prefix_color
  • mise exec -- prettier --check docs/tasks/index.md
  • mise exec npm:markdownlint-cli -- markdownlint docs/tasks/index.md
  • mise run docs:build

Full workspace Clippy currently stops in unchanged upstream code at src/system/packages/brew/cask.rs:1959 (clippy::needless_return). mise run lint also cannot discover a Git repository in this Sapling checkout; the focused format, ShellCheck, Prettier, and Markdownlint checks above pass.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds MISE_TASK_COLOR propagation for supported task output modes. It centralizes ANSI prefix styling, validates color behavior across task modes, handles nested tasks, and documents the variable.

Changes

Task prefix color propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Centralize prefix ANSI styling
src/ui/style.rs
Prefix rendering uses a shared console::Style. The new prefix_ansi function returns the leading ANSI sequence. Tests cover style equivalence and escape sequences.
Populate task color environment
src/task/task_output_handler.rs, src/task/task_executor.rs
OutputHandler returns a task prefix color for supported modes. prepare_task_context sets MISE_TASK_COLOR and excludes it from nested mise environment diffs.
Validate and document task color behavior
e2e/tasks/test_task_prefix_color, docs/tasks/index.md
End-to-end tests cover output modes, overrides, CI fallback, disabled colors, and nested tasks. Documentation describes variable behavior and ANSI reset handling.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c598f

The PR exposes the resolved task prefix color through MISE_TASK_COLOR while preserving existing disabled-output behavior; no actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks and review.

Poem

I’m a rabbit with colors bright,
Prefixes glow in task-flight.
Modes choose when hues may show,
Nested tasks keep colors low.
ANSI rests when lines are done—
Hop, hop, tests confirm the run!

Greptile Summary

The PR exposes the ANSI style of mise’s task prefix through MISE_TASK_COLOR, while returning an empty value when the selected output behavior does not display a colored prefix.

  • Adds task-environment propagation with nested-mise isolation.
  • Centralizes deterministic prefix-style construction and exports its opening ANSI sequence.
  • Documents the variable and adds end-to-end coverage across output modes, color settings, overrides, and nested tasks.

Confidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge.

No blocking failure remains.

Important Files Changed

Filename Overview
src/task/task_executor.rs Injects the computed prefix style into each task environment and excludes it from nested environment diffs so child invocations recompute their own output style.
src/task/task_output_handler.rs Resolves MISE_TASK_COLOR from effective quietness, output mode, and stderr color availability, including Replacing’s progress and text-fallback reporters.
src/ui/style.rs Refactors deterministic prefix styling into a shared helper and exposes the corresponding ANSI opening sequence.
e2e/tasks/test_task_prefix_color Covers colored, uncolored, quiet, raw, fallback, override, and nested-task behavior.
docs/tasks/index.md Documents the new environment variable, reset requirement, empty-value cases, and Replacing-mode semantics.

67-69: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the ANSI prefix format for all supported modes.

These checks only require a nonempty value. A non-ANSI value would pass, although MISE_TASK_COLOR must contain an ANSI sequence. Convert each value to hex and assert that it starts with 1b5b, as lines 63-65 do for prefix-mode tasks.

Also applies to: 73-73
