Summary

  • add literal content entries for whole-file dotfiles
  • support inline content in status, apply, unapply, dry-run bootstrap simulation, and OCI layers
  • reject combinations with source-oriented source, mode, or exclude options
  • document and test user-writable absolute targets and drift repair

Why

Whole-file dotfile entries previously required a separate source file. This made [dotfiles] an awkward workaround for user-writable files declared inline under [bootstrap.files], which always elevated during mutations.

Validation

  • mise run lint-fix
  • shellcheck -x e2e/cli/test_dotfiles_files
  • mise run test:e2e e2e/cli/test_dotfiles_files

AI-assisted — Tool: Codex; model: unavailable/unavailable; version: unavailable.

Note

Medium Risk
Touches core dotfile apply/unapply and OCI image layers; inline writes can overwrite targets on apply, though validation limits misconfiguration.

Overview
Whole-file [dotfiles] entries can now declare file bodies inline with { content = "..." } instead of a separate source file—useful for small configs and paths outside $HOME that previously required source.

Inline entries use a new content mode: mise writes a regular file (mode 0600 on Unix), detects content drift on status/apply like copy/template, and shows source: null / "inline" in JSON and status output. source, mode, and exclude cannot be combined with content (invalid configs are rejected or warned).

The same behavior is wired through bootstrap dry-run config simulation, OCI dotfiles layers, and conservative unapply (only removes files that still match the managed bytes unless --force).

Content request contract
src/system/files.rs, src/system/edits.rs
Dotfile entries accept content and create validated FileMode::Content requests without source expansion.
Content lifecycle handling
src/system/files.rs
Content requests support state checks, diffs, apply and unapply planning, conflict validation, writes, and matching-file removal.
Runtime and CLI integration
src/oci/builder.rs, src/cli/bootstrap.rs, src/cli/dotfiles/*
OCI creation writes inline content as regular files with mode 0600. Bootstrap and status output represent content entries without source paths.

I’m a rabbit with bytes in my paw,
Writing dotfiles without source-law.
Drift hops away, repairs spring near,
Inline content makes targets clear.

Greptile Summary

Adds literal whole-file dotfile content across parsing, status, apply/unapply, bootstrap dry-run simulation, and OCI image generation.

  • Validates that inline content is not combined with source-oriented options.
  • Writes inline files privately and repairs content drift.
  • Documents the feature and adds end-to-end coverage for status, absolute targets, drift repair, and invalid combinations.

Confidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge.

No blocking failure remains; the previously reported OCI permission issue is fixed because inline content is emitted with mode 0600 and that mode reaches the tar header unchanged.

Important Files Changed

Filename Overview
src/system/files.rs Introduces the inline-content request mode and integrates it across parsing, validation, state checks, apply, and unapply behavior.
src/oci/builder.rs Adds inline content to OCI dotfiles layers with private 0600 permissions, resolving the previous world-readable-file finding.
src/cli/bootstrap.rs Includes inline mise configuration content in bootstrap dry-run simulation and status output.
e2e/cli/test_dotfiles_files Covers inline content application, drift repair, unapply safety, absolute targets, JSON status, and invalid option combinations.
docs/dotfiles.md Documents inline whole-file content, private permissions, supported targets, and incompatible options.

`main` does not compile under `cfg(test)`:

error[E0063]: missing field `content` in initializer of `files::FileRequest`
        --> src/system/files.rs:2110:9

Two changes landed 24 minutes apart and neither could see the other. jdx#11981
added `link_req`, a test helper that builds a `FileRequest`; jdx#11983 then added
`content` as a required field. Each was green against the `main` it was cut
from, and the combination only exists after both merged.

The field is only meaningful for inline-content entries. These tests cover link
and copy modes, which read the file at `source`, so `None` is the value that
matches what they assert rather than a placeholder.

`as_request` in `cli/dotfiles/add.rs` already passes `content: None`; this was
the one construction left behind.
