fix(pipx): discover wheel-only package versions - #11959
Conversation
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughPIPX simple-index discovery now parses source distributions and wheels. It decodes filenames, normalizes package names, validates wheel names, removes duplicate versions, and uses the shared parser for remote and latest-version resolution. ChangesPIPX artifact discovery
Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes Mergeability Score: 🔵 Low · up to The PR expands wheel parsing for version discovery, but a malformed six-field wheel filename can currently contribute an invalid version to listings or latest-version resolution. The change is otherwise mergeable with owner awareness and should include validation for the optional build tag. Possibly related PRs

Greptile SummaryThe PR extends pipx’s PEP 503 fallback to discover wheel-only releases while sharing filename parsing between remote-version listing and latest-version resolution.
Confidence Score: 5/5The PR appears safe to merge with no concrete blocking or non-blocking issue identified. The shared parser preserves source-distribution discovery, correctly handles standard wheel filename fields and normalized distribution names, and deduplicates versions before both listing and latest-version resolution. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Validate the optional wheel build tag.
Line 464 accepts every six-field filename. A wheel build tag must start with an ASCII digit. For example, demo_pkg-9.9.9-invalid-py3-none-any.whl currently adds 9.9.9 as a candidate.
Reject invalid build tags and empty wheel fields. Add this malformed filename to the parser test. Otherwise, remote listing or latest can select a version from an invalid artifact.

Note
Medium Risk
Changes how pipx resolves versions from custom/simple indexes; incorrect parsing could list wrong versions or miss releases, but scope is limited to the HTML index fallback path.
Overview
Fixes wheel-only packages missing from
mise ls-remoteand latest-version resolution when the pipx backend falls back to PEP 503 Simple API HTML instead of PyPI JSON.The old HTML path only extracted versions from
.tar.gzlinks. This PR centralizes parsing inversions_from_simple_index, which walks allhrefvalues, decodes filenames, and derives versions from wheels (including build tags) and sdists using PEP 503 name normalization (-,_,.). Duplicate wheels for different platforms collapse to one version.list_remote_versionsandlatest_stable_versionboth call the shared helper; latest still applies the existing prerelease string filters on top.New unit tests cover mixed artifact HTML, encoded/normalized names, and a mock HTTP test for a wheel-only index.
