Stop an unrelated comment cancelling a suite in flight - #46
Conversation
The concurrency group keyed on the pull request number for every issue_comment event, and every comment on a pull request fires this workflow, not just the ones asking for a run. Those runs skip every job, but they joined the group first, so they cancelled whatever was already running. Confirmed live on the first real use: CodeRabbit's review summary landed fourteen seconds after a /run-tests comment and cancelled the suite that comment had just started, leaving the pull request with a red Tests Verified reading "Integration suite was cancelled". A run that is not going to do anything now gets a group of its own, so a second /run-tests still supersedes the first and nothing else supersedes anything.

The first version of this fix keyed the workflow-level group on the comment body, so a comment that was not `/run-tests` got a group of its own and stopped cancelling suites. That fixed the case that had just happened and left a worse one: anybody at all can type `/run-tests`, and a workflow-level group is joined before any job runs, so an unauthorized comment would still have cancelled a maintainer's suite. The gate rejecting the commenter a few seconds later is no help to the twelve minutes already thrown away. CodeRabbit caught it. Their suggestion was to put the allowlist in the concurrency expression too. The group moves down onto the suite job instead, which is only reached once the gate has authorized, so an unauthorized comment skips it and cancels nothing, and the allowlist stays in one place rather than being restated in an expression that cannot read it.

publish ran on always() and mapped a cancelled suite to a red status. With the concurrency group now on the suite job, a second /run-tests cancels the first suite and the first run then carries on to publish failure against the same head, over the pending status the newer run has already written, or after that run's own result if the timing falls that way, burying it. Cancellations no longer publish at all. There are two ways to get one and neither wants a status from here: a superseded run has a newer one behind it that will publish, and a person cancelling by hand leaves the pending status standing, which reads as waiting and blocks the merge. That is the honest answer, since nothing was proven about the commit either way. CodeRabbit caught this one too.

Why
Found on the first real use of the comment triggered suite, in #45.
/run-testswas posted at 20:03:10 and the gate started a run. CodeRabbit's review summary landed at 20:03:24, fourteen seconds later. That comment is anissue_commentevent too, so it started a second run of this workflow, which skipped every job, as intended. What was not intended is that it joined the same concurrency group first and cancelled the suite. The pull request was left with
Tests Verifiedred, reading "Integration suite was cancelled", for a run nobody cancelled. What
The group keys on the pull request number only for comments that actually ask for a run. Anything else gets a group of its own, so it cancels nothing. A second
/run-testsstill supersedes the first, which is the behaviour the group exists for.Note on testing this
Same constraint as #42: an
issue_commentworkflow only ever runs the default branch's copy of itself, so this cannot be exercised from its own branch. #45 is still open and will demonstrate it once this is onmain.Summary by CodeRabbit
/run-testsrequests cancel previous runs for the same pull request.
