#67 bumps pre-commit 4.5.1 to 4.6.2 in .tool-versions, and the assertion refused it on both counts:

REFUSED: this diff changes more than dependency pins.
.tool-versions: not a dependency pin file
  .tool-versions: removed a line that was not re-added: -pre-commit 4.5.1
  .tool-versions: added a line that was not a version bump: +pre-commit 4.6.2

The file was not in the allowlist, and its <tool> <version> form has only a space between name and version, so none of the prefix rules could anchor on it.

The allowlist gains the file. The line form is matched whole-line rather than by prefix, because a variable-width lookbehind is not allowed in Python and "the word after a space" would match most of a workflow file, so normalize now takes the path and applies that pattern to that file only. The tool name remains the prefix, kept and compared, so swapping the name or adding a line is still refused.

Verification

24 tests, including a swapped tool name and an extra tool added. All four open bot PRs pass the assertion with this applied: #61, #64, #66 and #67.

Note

This is the third format I have had to add after the fact, following lazylibrarian's 40a389ea-ls310 and korsync's sha-.... The pattern is that I keep enumerating pin shapes from memory instead of from the repository. The allowlist is now .env.example, .pre-commit-config.yaml, .github/workflows/, tests/requirements.txt and .tool-versions, which is every file Renovate and Dependabot are configured to touch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for validating dependency pin updates in .tool-versions.
    • Tool version changes are now recognized while unrelated tool changes remain blocked.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for valid tool version bumps.
    • Added checks to reject tool-name swaps and unexpected tool additions.
  • Documentation

    • Updated supported-file documentation to include .tool-versions and its special handling.

#67 bumps pre-commit 4.5.1 to 4.6.2 in .tool-versions, and the assertion refused
it on both counts: the file was not in the allowlist, and its `<tool> <version>`
form has no prefix for the version matcher to anchor on.

The allowlist gains the file. The line form is matched whole-line rather than by
prefix, because a lookbehind of variable width is not allowed and "the word after
a space" would match most of a workflow file, so normalize now takes the path and
uses that pattern for that file only. The tool name is still the prefix, kept and
compared, so swapping it or adding a line is refused as before.

All four open bot pull requests pass now, and there are twenty-four tests.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pin-only diff checker now supports .tool-versions as an allowed path. It normalizes complete tool/version lines for that file and tests valid version changes, tool renames, and added tools.

Changes

Tool version pin validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Path-specific pin normalization
scripts/assert-pin-only-diff.py
The checker allows five pin files, including .tool-versions. It applies whole-line normalization to .tool-versions and keeps prefix normalization for other files.
Tool version validation tests
tests/test_assert_pin_only_diff.py
Tests accept valid .tool-versions version changes and reject tool-name swaps or additional tool entries.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8fde2

The validation change can accept pins in unintended similarly named paths and can reject valid .tool-versions entries containing multiple versions. These bounded correctness issues should be fixed before merging.

* Bound the steps that reach the network

`Install xmlstarlet` hung for the entire twenty minute job budget on #68, twice
in a row, while every step after it was skipped. It had no limit of its own, so
one stalled apt mirror spent the whole suite, and the only report possible was
that the run did not finish. The 25 minute timeout seen the day before was very
likely the same thing.

That step now has a six minute bound, three attempts, and explicit apt timeouts,
which are what make a stall fail fast enough for a retry to be worth having. The
other three steps that reach the network, the podman archive install,
setup-python and the pip install, get bounds too. The steps that only touch
local files are left alone: they cannot hang on a mirror, and a limit on each
would be noise.

The job cap stays the binding limit and is meant to. Step limits sum to well
over an hour because each allows for its own worst case, and what they buy is a
single hung step failing on its own rather than taking the suite with it.

* Bound every step, sized from a measured run

Every step in the suite job now carries its own limit, and the existing ones are
resized. They were guesses; these come from the steps of a passing run:

  xmlstarlet 36s, podman 180s, seed 69s, pull 54s, start 78s, wait 118s,
wire 47s, tests 270s, teardown 15s, everything else under 10s

Each limit is roughly two to three times what its step actually takes, with more
slack where the duration depends on the network or on the stack coming up. The
worst case for a single stall drops from twenty minutes to nine, and for most
steps to two or three.

The job cap stays at 20, and the comment claiming otherwise is corrected while I
am here. That number came from run level timestamps reading 11 or 12 minutes;
the steps of a passing run sum to 14.8, so 20 is about a third of headroom
rather than two thirds. Cutting it further would start failing honest runs.

Match exact allowlisted paths.

The validation at Line [178] uses tuple-prefix matching. After adding .tool-versions, paths such as .tool-versions-malicious and .tool-versions/child also pass the allowlist. A tool==1 to tool==2 change in such a path can pass through the generic VERSION normalization. Match exact filenames separately from directory prefixes, and use an exact .tool-versions check in the path-specific branch.

# `.tool-versions` writes `<tool> <version>`, one per line, with nothing to
# anchor on but the space. That cannot go in the prefix set below, because a
# lookbehind of variable width is not allowed and "the word after a space" would
# match most of a workflow file. It is matched whole-line instead, and only for
# that file, which is why normalize takes the path.

asdf .tool-versions configuration format multiple versions inline comments official documentation

💡 Result:

The.tool-versions configuration file used by asdf has specific behaviors regarding syntax and version handling. File Format and Inline Comments Official documentation defines the.tool-versions file as a text file used to specify tool versions [1][2]. While official documentation does not explicitly detail comment support, the underlying implementation and community-identified behavior indicate that lines beginning with # are typically ignored by asdf commands such as asdf install [3]. However, inline comments (comments placed on the same line after a version string) are not supported and will likely cause parsing errors, as the entire line is often treated as the version configuration [4][3]. Multiple Versions You can specify multiple versions for a single tool in a.tool-versions file by separating them with spaces [1][2]. The intention, as stated in the official documentation, is that these versions act as a list where asdf falls back from the first version to the next if a specific version is not available [1][2]. Note: There are reported inconsistencies and community discussions regarding how asdf processes these multi-version lists. Some users have observed that the behavior may not always strictly adhere to a "first-available" fallback logic, with some reports suggesting that the most recently released version or other sorting mechanisms may influence the outcome regardless of the order defined in the file [5]. Summary of Supported Version Formats: - Exact version: e.g., 10.15.0 [1][2] - Ref (tag/commit/branch): e.g., ref:v1.0.2-a [1][2] - Path (local source): e.g., path:~/src/elixir [1][2] - System: system (uses the version installed on the OS) [1][2]

Support multiple versions in .tool-versions entries. TOOL_VERSION_LINE matches only one version token, so a line such as nodejs 20.0.0 18.0.0 remains unnormalized and a version-only update is refused. Parse one tool followed by one or more version tokens, preserve the tool and token count, and add a regression test.
