Why

Renovate reads a release date for container images from Docker Hub alone (its tag_last_pushed). With minimumReleaseAge: "7 days", the default timestamp-required and internalChecksFilter: "strict", every update for an image on GHCR, quay.io or gcr.io is held indefinitely: no pull request, nothing red, only an entry under "Pending Status Checks" on the dashboard (#24). Not one image from another registry was updated between #57 (2026-08-17) and today, gluetun included. Upstream tracking is in #321.

What

  • Six images move to Docker Hub, where the window applies unchanged: gluetun (qmcgaw/gluetun), audiobookshelf, homepage, recyclarr, notifiarr (golift/notifiarr) and the linuxserver calibre mod in build/lazylibrarian/Dockerfile. For each one, the project's own workflow pushes to both registries from one run, and the pinned digest resolves to the identical artifact on Docker Hub, so what runs does not change. Pins and digests are untouched; only the registry moves.
  • Five stay where they are, documented: whisparr, koreader-sync and podman-exporter are not on Docker Hub, the qBittorrent exporter is there only as a separate build (different digest for the same tag), and cadvisor's Docker Hub copy stopped at v0.33. docs/DEPENDENCY_UPDATES.md, "Images outside Docker Hub", lists them, explains the gap, links the upstream Renovate issues, and gives the procedure for releasing their updates by hand after checking the date the registry itself recorded.
  • A new test in tests/test_renovate_pins.py fails when an annotated image from a registry other than Docker Hub is missing from that list, so the next one cannot freeze silently.
  • Pointers at minimumReleaseAge in .github/renovate.json5 and in docs/HARDENING.md.
  • A correction to the whisparr incident notes: the 2026-09 breakage was Whisparr's own regression ([v3] Base URL support for Reverse Proxy broken on eros-develop Whisparr/Whisparr-Eros#874, fixed upstream in 3.6.0), not hotio's build layer.

Tested

  • tests/test_renovate_pins.py and tests/test_version_pins.py prerequisites: 163 passed, 4 skipped. The new test collects exactly the five held images, and fails when one is removed from the doc.
  • Every pinned digest was resolved against Docker Hub's registry and matches.
  • The integration suite (/run-tests) is what pulls every moved image and builds the lazylibrarian wrapper from the Docker Hub mod; it runs once review is done.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Switched several container images to Docker Hub sources while keeping their pinned versions unchanged.
    • Clarified that images without usable release dates are held for manual review, including checking the registry’s date and matching the image digest before release.
    • Updated guidance for Whisparr’s pinned image and manual digest checks.

Renovate reads a release date for container images from Docker Hub
alone, so the seven day minimumReleaseAge window held every update for
an image on GHCR, quay.io or gcr.io indefinitely, with nothing red and
no pull request. No image from another registry was updated between
2026-08-17 and 2026-10-19.

Six images whose own publisher pushes the identical artifact to Docker
Hub from the same workflow run now come from there, so the window
applies to them unchanged: gluetun, audiobookshelf, homepage,
recyclarr, notifiarr (golift/notifiarr) and the linuxserver calibre mod
the lazylibrarian wrapper is built from. Each pinned digest resolves to
the same artifact on Docker Hub, so what runs does not change.

The five that cannot move (whisparr, koreader-sync, the qBittorrent
exporter, the podman exporter and cadvisor) are listed in
docs/DEPENDENCY_UPDATES.md, "Images outside Docker Hub", together with
the procedure for releasing their updates by hand after checking the
date their registry recorded, and the upstream Renovate issues that
would end the need for it (tracked in #321). A new test fails when an
image from another registry is missing from that list.

Also corrects the whisparr incident notes: the 2026-09 breakage was
Whisparr's own regression (Whisparr/Whisparr-Eros#874), not hotio's
build layer.

📝 Walkthrough

Selected container image references and Renovate pins now use Docker Hub paths. Documentation describes the seven-day release-age policy and manual handling for images outside Docker Hub. Tests check that those images appear in the dependency update documentation.

Selected image references and Renovate dependency names now use Docker Hub paths. Existing version tags and pinned digests remain unchanged. The dependency update documentation records the migrated images.

The documentation describes manual date and digest checks for images outside Docker Hub. A test checks that annotated non-Docker-Hub images appear in the documented section. The Whisparr notes describe its manual digest update path.

Change: Bug fix

Possibly related issues

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 8ffd8

The PR moves pinned image references to Docker Hub and documents manual handling for the remaining registries. No actionable merge risk is established beyond normal checks and the planned image-pull integration suite.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8ffd8

The registry moves preserve existing digest pins. However, the new manual release procedure hands updates to unattended merging before the final digest is rechecked, leaving an ordering gap in the seven-day release-age assurance.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new manual procedure releases a held update before verifying the digest Renovate actually proposes. Eligible updates already receive automatic approval and merge eligibility. A publisher moving a tag between the age lookup and PR creation, or an interrupted operator session, could therefore leave a different digest on the unattended path before the documented recovery runs. The procedure requires comparison and disabling automerge on mismatch, but does not establish a blocking, digest-bound checkpoint before that handoff. Actual bypass depends on external Renovate override semantics and is not demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A malicious held-image digest, if adopted and run, would inherit its consumer's existing authority. Notably, cAdvisor is configured as privileged with host filesystem and per-user Podman socket mounts; the Podman exporter also receives that socket. Exposure could therefore extend beyond application data to resources accessible through that runtime identity. These privileges predate this PR; host-root or cross-tenant compromise is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported concern is a release-verification race, not an exposed test endpoint. It requires control of an upstream image publication and a maintainer-initiated release. A changed digest could reach the existing automatic merge path before the operator detects the mismatch, subject to external Renovate override behavior. No successful bypass or malicious image was observed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing merge path restricts automatic approval to eligible Renovate updates with a successful pin-only verdict and retains required checks. Those controls constrain repository changes, but the documented bot-review lane does not independently verify registry-recorded digest age.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep held-registry updates outside unattended merging until age verification is bound to the exact proposed digest. Any digest replacement should invalidate that approval, so interruption or concurrent updates leave the release blocked rather than dependent on a later corrective action.

Explanation

No hygiene violation found. The diff and commit messages contain no secrets, non-GitHub-noreply email addresses, absolute home paths, private IPs, cloud account IDs/ARNs, or personal deployment details. The URLs, image references, digests, public repository names, and devcontainer-airlock references are public project or workflow documentation.

Full details: No Ai Attribution

Explanation

No AI attribution is present. The pull request title and description contain no prohibited marker. Both commit messages contain no Co-Authored-By trailer, Generated with line, AI-agent name, or agent-session link. The added files contain no such attribution; their generic references to a maintainer and an agent do not name or link the AI agent that made the change.

A backticked mention anywhere in the section satisfied the check, so a row missing from the held table could pass on a prose mention alone. Read the Image column of that table instead.
