Not sure how this was turned off (probably some past round of fighting with wasm-bindgen), but release optimization takes us from 1.9 to 1.7 MB uncompressed, or more importantly 545 to 481 kB over the wire.
Add a very ugly workaround for wasm-bindgen/wasm-pack#1420
