New mappers should select a free square as close to the top of the grid as they can. Validators check these squares first & will help with feedback. After you have marked it complete, when it turns green you can click on it to see the feedback.

I don't know that having it always say to pick one at the top is best, it depends on the job what order we want it done in. It would be good to have a field on the task/edit page though that allows us to set instructions on what order to do the tasks in. I think just a text box like the main ones we have with the inline preview would be the best.

One thing that could be added to the 'take a task' page though as just static permanent text should be that, regardless of what order we want the tiles done in, you should try to take a task that is at least 1 square away from all the other users who already have one locked. This allows people to map a little bit outside their squares without risking duplicating data and it also cuts down on conflicts.

Andrew,

I think my wording needs to be improved.

I got a similar message from Severin, and my reply was
/'This is only for new to TM mappers. Perhaps my wording is not very
good. I'm trying to get the brand new mappers who may need feedback to
do their mapping somewhere where we can find them instead of randomly
scattered amongst the squares & tasks. I'm conscious that 'new to HOT'
mappers have asked about a 'sandbox', or feedback, and I'm looking to
provide something as close to that as I/we can.//
////
//I completely agree for those with experience.'/

I sent a message to the HOT community suggesting it, and have been
prioritising the validation of that area. I did receive a couple of
replies from HOT members who thought it was a good idea.

I've updated the TM wiki to reflect it
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Tasking_Manager

It's obvious that my wording needs amending if it is causing confusion &
I'm open to suggestions about how / if this should be progressed.

That makes a lot more sense, although it doesn't really contradict my comments, just adds another dimension to them. For new mappers, yes some kind of static text on all tasks would be good. This actually makes me think a bit, since we have pretty detailed stats on what kind of people are using the task manager.

Not only do we have access to the task manager DB tables (which tell us if the user has completed, validated, or even locked a task before), but we also know their OSM username and can see their edit history their, (even just looking at the total number of edits being zero or nonzero would tell us something).

This means that we could add some kind "tutorial" instructions in the space over on the right side of the page. If it is a new user with no previous task manager experience, show them a page explaining what the task manager is, why we use it, and how to lock a task. Then once they have locked a task, they are no longer a "complete noob" user and see a different page, telling them how to launch an editor, where to look for instructions, etc. So based on the users level of experience we just keep showing them new tutorial information suited to their current level of knowledge. After they complete 5 or 10 tiles you show them the validation instructions, etc.

In the TM, ergonomy is important. Brief text only in Popups.

Perhaps
New to TM? see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Tasking_Manager

I'd like to keep it as completely open as possible, so even the brand
new users can see what the validators read - it reinforces some of the
parts of LearnOSM. Some of the validators may not speak English & I
would like (this is still at the early planning stage!) to add sections
so that when leaving feedback in a square it contains a link to the
validation wiki with pictures showing the problem, and possible
solutions for whatever editor is being used. It would be good if it
didn't matter what language the mapper or validator spoke.

I'd like to see something appearing fairly soon. The problem with some
of the software solutions is that they can take a long time to
implement. I don't know how they feel, but it looks as if the software
writers are being asked to do a lot already.

I've added to the wiki, because I've become aware that there are many
mappers who are adding data, but not marking the square as complete,
which is a bit of a pain for the mappers who follow as they have to
review someone elses work to see what / if is missing. When you look at
a TM task there is a tendency to see who marked a square as complete &
assume they did most of the mapping, but sometimes they've added very
little if anything. I'm now doing Ctrl+H to see the history of just
about every item that is 'wrong' in some way, because very often it
isn't the person who marked the square as finished. Perhaps the simple
link would encourage to check what they should be doing.

The stats. would be interesting and could be used to improve things, but
be aware that I'm not sure I should have access rights to them -
enthusiastic, have views, and experienced mapper, but really relatively
new to HOT & not a member.

Hi,

Regarding identifying newbies, would be good to have a clue about how many
changesets the users have in their profile (eg a color by category for
every name), so that anyone, even the newbies could map anywhere. I have no
clue if it is super complicated to code or not, but maybe I could add a
ticket on GitHub for this, it it makes sense for you.

Sincerely,

Severin
