Proposed change

Mainly improves performance of transitions and fixes configuring the frequency when using a gpio driver.

Ready to merge from my side. CI just failed because GitHub was not available at that time and I can't rerun it.

@springstan Fixed it in v1.6.6 of the lib and changed this MR accordingly. Thanks for referencing the issue. I wasn't aware of it.
