What's the user need?

Faculty

Faculty and their assistants will often need to print/export out sections to send to a copy center, who will then print copies of that section for distributing to students in the class throughout the semester. They may print directly from H2O to a PDF, and send that to the copy center, or export from H2O to a Word document, which is then subjected to additional edits before being sent to a copy center.

Faculty will also print sections of their casebook to hand-edit them, the edits which are then tasked to an assistant to add back into H2O.

One of the biggest needs for faculty when printing/exporting is pulling their content out of H2O to process and prepare in a publishing software (such as InDesign) for eventual insertion into a print-on-demand service.

Students

Students will often want to print out casebooks, sections or individual items to read and mark up by hand.

Additionally, several law school classes do not allow laptops in the classroom. Thus having a hard copy of H2O content is necessary if they wish to bring it into class.

Students will also export into Word to modify appearance, font size etc beyond what H2O offers. This may be for their own reading experience, to further customize how they view the content.

Also, if they wish to assemble their own document from various sources, having the content in an editable and not just PDF is key.

What does H2O do to address this need?

There are two ways to pull content out of H2O: Printing an item, or casebook, out as a PDF, or by exporting an item or casebook as a Word document. H2O also offers several ways to customize the export, including showing/hiding all text (reflecting hide-text annotations), font and size selections, inclusion of a Table of Contents, and more.
