If the context key is just a string there could be collisions across packages, with a unique type as a `var` we can be sure that it won't collide as long as it's the only key in the package with that name

This MR cleans up basically all of the Go handlers, ensuring that error handling and other edge cases are all accounted for, and introduces a test suite to cover each of them.
