The defect

v1_interpreter.rs build_scope_indexes_with_module_order builds ONE global fn_nodes map holding a single bare-name slot per spelling, plus one qualified slot per declaration. lookup_fn is a plain map get with no caller context. Two modules that both declare section_1 therefore fight over one entry, and the loser's own calls execute the winner's body with no diagnostic anywhere.

The silent face shipped. Four plan carriers in dag/gunbc/plans each declare status_block and section_1 .. section_9, and each folds its body by calling them bare — import_namespace_program, v2_corpus_self_host, branch_merge_admission_model, wave2_prep_design. One carrier won all ten slots, so import-namespace-program.md was emitted carrying v2-corpus-self-host's entire body under its own title and slug: well-formed markdown, byte-stable across runs, nothing refusing.

Why it was invisible: the type layer already resolves per module — lookup_resolved_sig tries the module's own local before parents — so typecheck bound each carrier's calls to its own sections and only the runtime collapsed them. The collision was even computed (ambiguous_bare_function_names) and lookup_fn never consulted it.

The fix

InterpContext::lookup_fn_from(name, site_file): a bare name claimed by more than one module resolves to the referring file's own module first, then falls through to the shared slot. Wired at eval_call and both eval_var tiers, over a new file_module_paths index built in the walk that was already visiting every item.

Gated deliberately. The tier fires only for names in ambiguous_bare_function_names, so resolution of every name exactly one module declares is byte-for-byte what it was. Only the colliding population moves, and it moves toward the module that authored the reference.

Evidence — measured A/B, not predicted

An owned fixture pair (sentinels 100/200, structurally identical so neither peer is privileged by anything the author wrote) plus a witness asserting both directions in one row. Exactly one bare slot exists, so under the defect at least one conjunct is false whichever peer won — which makes the conjunction order-independent where a single-direction row would be a coin flip wearing a verdict.

main row control
fix applied true true
fix reverted false true

The control asserts bare cross-module references still resolve — the direction a repair that narrowed resolution instead of ordering it would break.

What is not claimed

This is not the namespace program. A bare reference to a name the referring module does not declare, claimed by two other modules, is still picked by walk order with nothing said. That residue stays counted in PreparedClaimScope::ambiguous_bare_names, whose doc is corrected here: the count is unchanged and its subject has narrowed, so a reader taking it as the silent-pick population would now overcount. The terminal wall is namespace-only resolution, where ambiguous bare binding has no constructor — the next-rung trigger the interpreter already names.

The four affected plan documents are not committed in docs/plans/, so no emitted artifact in the tree changes; this repairs the mechanism that would emit them wrong.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…collapsed into one global bare slot

`fn_nodes` holds ONE bare-name slot per spelling plus one qualified slot per
declaration, and `lookup_fn` is a plain map get with no caller context. Two
modules that both declare `section_1` therefore fight over a single entry, and
the loser's OWN calls execute the winner's body with no diagnostic anywhere.

THE SILENT FACE SHIPPED. Four plan carriers in dag/gunbc/plans each declare
`status_block` and `section_1` .. `section_9` and each folds its body by calling
them BARE -- import_namespace_program, v2_corpus_self_host,
branch_merge_admission_model, wave2_prep_design. One carrier won all ten slots,
so import-namespace-program.md was emitted carrying v2-corpus-self-host's entire
body under its own title and slug: a well-formed markdown file, byte-stable
across runs, with nothing refusing.

WHY IT WAS INVISIBLE: the type layer already resolves per module
(`lookup_resolved_sig` tries the module's own `local` before `parents`), so
typecheck bound each carrier's calls to its own sections and only the runtime
collapsed them. The collision was even COMPUTED -- `ambiguous_bare_function_names`
-- and `lookup_fn` never consulted it.

THE FIX: `lookup_fn_from(name, site_file)` resolves a bare name claimed by more
than one module to the referring file's OWN module first, then falls through to
the shared slot. Wired at `eval_call` and both `eval_var` tiers, with a new
`file_module_paths` index built in the walk that was already visiting every item.

SCOPE, GATED DELIBERATELY. The tier fires only for names in
`ambiguous_bare_function_names`, so the resolution of every name exactly one
module declares is byte-for-byte what it was; only the colliding population
moves, and it moves toward the module that authored the reference.

WHAT IS NOT CLAIMED. This is not the namespace program. A bare reference to a
name the referring module does NOT declare, claimed by two OTHER modules, is
still picked by walk order with nothing said -- that residue stays counted in
`PreparedClaimScope::ambiguous_bare_names`, whose doc is corrected here: the
count is unchanged and its SUBJECT has narrowed, so a reader taking it as the
silent-pick population would now overcount. The terminal wall is namespace-only
resolution, where ambiguous bare binding has no constructor.

EVIDENCE, MEASURED A/B ON ONE REMOTE DISPATCH rather than predicted. An owned
fixture pair (sentinels 100/200, structurally identical so neither peer is
privileged by anything the author wrote) plus a witness asserting BOTH
directions in one row: exactly one bare slot exists, so under the defect at
least one conjunct is false whichever peer won, which makes the conjunction
order-independent where a single-direction row would be a coin flip.

fix applied: main row true, control true
fix reverted: main row FALSE, control true

The control asserts bare CROSS-module references still resolve -- the direction
a repair that narrowed resolution instead of ordering it would break.

End-to-end verification: the shipped artifact is repaired. Independent of this PR's own witness, and I set the discriminator before running so the result could not be read charitably afterwards.

Method

Built gunbc from this branch (e325e32873a) and ran the real projection path:

gunbc run --source-root dag --source-root src/v2 \
  --entry dag/tools/generated_artifact_gate.dag --function main_wet

Predicted pass = import-namespace-program.md carries its own section 1 and the two body hashes differ; fail = bodies still hash identically.

Result

BEFORE (main): both bodies 96b5cceeb1f3795236f779f810e4527d identical
AFTER (fix): import-ns da075840039d72fd733a6ffc977cffd2
                v2-corpus 7fd834dec26de7735db5a161661ef218 distinct

import-namespace-program.md ## 1. The end state
v2-corpus-self-host.md ## 1. The goal, and what it buys

Sizes now diverge as well — 10,852 vs 15,974 bytes, where both were 115 lines of identical length. Each plan renders its own body.

Why this is worth having beside your witness rather than redundant with it

each_module_reaches_its_own_declaration_of_a_shared_bare_name establishes interpreter behavior on a controlled fixture pair. That the shipped projection is repaired is a separate claim: the fix could order resolution correctly while the projection path still emitted a wrong body for some other reason, and nothing in the fixture pair would notice. These are two paths, and DESIGN §4b asks for a rung per structurally distinct path rather than the strongest one cited for all. Both now measured.

On the witness itself

Two things in it are better than a straightforward regression test and worth not losing in review:

The conjunction is load-bearing, and your comment says why — a row asserting only alpha would go green or red on a walk order neither module controls, "a coin flip wearing a verdict." The conjunction is order-independent because exactly one bare slot exists, so under the defect at least one conjunct is false whichever peer won.

The green control locates the boundary instead of restating the row. A repair that merely stopped consulting the shared bare slot would break every bare cross-module reference — the intended authoring form under the namespace thread and the form most witnesses use. bare_cross_module_reference_still_resolves_control reds if the repair narrowed resolution rather than ordering it. That is the arm most likely to be dropped as redundant by someone tidying, and it is the one that keeps this fix from being a regression.

Your note that the displacement produces a plausible Int is the same observation from the other end: this class fails by fabricating well-formed output, not by refusing, which is why it shipped byte-stable across runs with nothing to see.

Not claimed

I have not measured whether other corpus artifacts were silently displaced by the same collision. The two plan carriers are the confirmed victims because they are what surfaced it; whether any other same-named module-scope pair exists is uncounted, and a census would be its own work rather than a condition on this PR.

I am not merging — operator merges manually.

…the module it came from

The own-module tier alone was incomplete, and the floor said so: one failure in
a fold of 11,640 witnesses, `test.claim.ilm4926_designation_witness` erroring
`cannot access field 'wording' on Null`.

WHAT IT FOUND. That witness imports `extdeps_external_authority_anchor`
explicitly from `extdeps.cpu_attachment.ilm4926` -- a name 630 modules declare,
one per extdeps module by repository convention. The import was INERT: the
reference still landed on `extdeps.vendor.lotes`, imported one line earlier and
holding the shared bare slot, while the attestation row inside ilm4926 correctly
reached ilm4926's own. Row and query disagreed and the filter returned empty.

AND THE OLD GREEN WAS WORSE THAN THE NEW RED. Before any tier, BOTH sides read
lotes, so the equality matched and the witness passed while `ampere_max` meant
"attestations whose authority is the LOTES vendor anchor" -- an assertion
passing on a query that meant nothing. The repair belongs in the language, not
in the witness: the author wrote where the name comes from and the runtime
discarded it.

THE TIER. `lookup_fn_from` now resolves own declarations -> EXPLICIT IMPORT
BINDINGS -> shared slot, mirroring `lookup_resolved_sig`'s local-then-declared
order. The braced list of `import a.b.c { x }` survives on the module node's
`params`, so this reads what the author wrote. It deliberately does NOT fold
over `ResolvedFuncEnv.parents`: that is the flattened transitive closure, keeps
module identity only, drops the per-import name list, and a first-hit over it
picks lotes again -- the same silent pick one level out.

A THIRD GLOBAL FLATTENING, found because the fix did not work. `build_initial_env`
pre-binds every module-level `data` by BARE name through the global `lookup_fn`,
and `eval_var` consults the environment BEFORE the registry, so an ambiguous
pre-bound name shadows per-module resolution everywhere -- the `fn_nodes`
collapse one layer earlier and harder to see, because it looks like an ordinary
variable lookup succeeding. It is why the FUNCTION form of this collision
resolved correctly while the DATA form did not: functions are not pre-bound.
Ambiguous names are no longer pre-bound; they fall through to the registry path,
which resolves per module and memoizes through `data_cache`. Single-declarer
names keep the fast path; locals are unaffected either way.

EVIDENCE -- THREE INTERPRETER STATES, EACH ROW RED EXACTLY WHERE ITS MECHANISM
IS ABSENT:

                        own-module row import row control
    all tiers true true true
    own-module only true FALSE true
no tier (main) FALSE FALSE true

THE IMPORT ROW IS A CONJUNCTION OVER TWO IMPORTERS, and an earlier revision of
it was a decoration this A/B caught: asserting only `shared_anchor == 22` it was
GREEN with no tier present at all, because `gunbc run` builds indexes with no
module order, making the bare slot last-write-wins, which beta won by being
imported second. It would have discriminated under the floor's first-write-wins
order and not here -- a probe whose verdict depends on which resolution path is
running is not a probe, and it would have been cited as coverage for exactly the
mechanism the floor had just proven missing. A second importer names alpha, so
exactly one bare slot means at least one conjunct is wrong whichever peer won.

RESIDUE, NAMED: a bare reference to a name the module neither declares nor
imports, and a name reached through a WILDCARD import, which binds no names.
Both still resolve by precedence with nothing said.

Pushed 0ce56c3 — the floor found a real defect in the first commit

The own-module tier alone was incomplete. The floor's single failure across 11,640 witnesses (ilm4926_designation_witness, cannot access field 'wording' on Null) was not a corpus problem to route around — it was this change being wrong.

What it found. That witness explicitly imports extdeps_external_authority_anchor from extdeps.cpu_attachment.ilm4926 — a name 630 modules declare, one per extdeps module by repository convention. The import was inert: the reference still landed on extdeps.vendor.lotes, imported one line earlier and holding the shared bare slot, while the attestation row inside ilm4926 correctly reached its own. Row and query disagreed, filter returned empty.

The old green was worse than the new red. Before any tier, both sides read lotes, so the equality matched and the witness passed while ampere_max meant "attestations whose authority is the LOTES vendor anchor" — an assertion passing on a query that meant nothing. I nearly "fixed" the witness by fully-qualifying its reference; that would have treated a symptom and left every other explicitly-imported ambiguous name still resolving to an unrelated module. The author wrote where the name comes from; the runtime discarded it.

The tier. lookup_fn_from now resolves own declarations → explicit import bindings → shared slot, mirroring lookup_resolved_sig's local-then-declared order. It deliberately does not fold over ResolvedFuncEnv.parents — that's the flattened transitive closure, keeps module identity only, drops the per-import name list, and a first-hit over it picks lotes again: the same silent pick one level out.

A third global flattening, found because the fix didn't work. build_initial_env pre-binds every module-level data by bare name through the global lookup_fn, and eval_var consults the environment before the registry — so an ambiguous pre-bound name shadows per-module resolution everywhere. That also explains why the function form of this collision resolved correctly while the data form didn't: functions aren't pre-bound. Ambiguous names are no longer pre-bound; they fall through to the registry path, which resolves per module and memoizes via data_cache.

Evidence — three interpreter states

own-module row import row control
all tiers true true true
own-module only true false true
no tier (main) false false true

Each row reds exactly where its mechanism is absent; the control holds throughout.

The import row nearly shipped as a decoration. An earlier revision asserted only shared_anchor == 22 and was green with no tier at all — gunbc run builds indexes with no module order, so the bare slot is last-write-wins and beta won it by being imported second. It would have discriminated under the floor's first-write-wins order and not here. A probe whose verdict depends on which resolution path is running is not a probe, and it would have been cited as coverage for the exact mechanism the floor had just proven missing. It's now a conjunction over two importers naming opposite peers, so one bare slot means at least one conjunct is wrong whichever won.

Also worth recording: my entry-scoped reproduction of the floor failure showed no difference between arms — the wrong instrument, since this collision is closure-dependent entry-scoped and unconditional under floor preparation.

Residue, named: a bare reference to a name the module neither declares nor imports, and a name reached through a wildcard import, which binds no names. Both still resolve by precedence with nothing said.

Contributing a measurement, not a change request — the fix here is yours and I am not asking you to alter it. But this PR reads as a four-file fixture repair, and the population it acts on is corpus-scale. A fix this wide framed as two plan files will be re-derived by somebody in a month.

The candidate population

Measured on origin/main, over dag/ and src/v2/, column-zero fn declarations only:

grep -rhoE '^fn [a-zA-Z_][a-zA-Z0-9_]*' dag src/v2 --include='*.dag' \
  | awk '{print $2}' | sort | uniq -c | awk '$1>1'
33,887 column-zero fn declarations, total
557 bare names declared at module scope in MORE THAN ONE module
1,456 declarations participating in such a collision

Worst: string_eq 15, atom_node 15, census_of 10, is_admitted 9, symbol_eq 8, main 7, list_contains_str 7, is_refused 7. (With src/v1 included: 588 / 1,528.)

The command is inline deliberately so the figure re-derives rather than being transcribed — per DESIGN's name the instrument rule. Do not copy the numbers into a carrier; copy the command.

This is a denominator, NOT a defect count

1,456 is where the mechanism you repaired can bite. It is not 1,456 defects. A wrong answer requires all three of:

  1. a module actually references the bare name, and
  2. the shared slot's winner is a different module's declaration, and
  3. the two declarations behave differently.

The two plan carriers satisfied all three, which is why they produced a visibly corrupt document. How many others do is unmeasured, and I am not guessing. I am stating the population precisely because conflating it with a defect count is the error this repo keeps recording.

Why it belongs in the body before merge

DESIGN puts name resolution squarely in the ordinary compiler floor — names resolve, applications bind — and a failure there is a below-baseline safety regression, not a documentation nit. Your title already makes the compiler claim (a module must reach its own declaration); the population is what shows the claim is floor-class rather than local.

Two consequences worth stating explicitly:

  • A green floor on this PR is strong evidence, because it means those 1,456 declarations now resolve module-locally and nothing depended on the old behaviour.
  • If anything was relying on the collision — a module reaching another's same-named fn and getting the right answer by accident — your fix breaks it loudly, which is correct, and far better seen in your own run than met on main by an unrelated lane.

Credit where it is due

The population came from swift-badger-524, who raised the scope point. I re-measured independently and report my own figures because their table listed port_reading at 24 where the corpus declares it exactly once — so that count was measuring occurrences, not declarations. The scope argument was right; the number needed re-deriving. Both halves are worth recording.

Your witness remains the right shape: the conjunction is order-independent by construction, and bare_cross_module_reference_still_resolves_control is the arm that keeps the repair from narrowing resolution. Neither should be dropped as redundant.

Correcting my own figure above, and the correction closes the open question rather than deferring it.

My earlier comment gave one number (557 names / 1,456 declarations). That number is right for what it measures but it silently assumed an answer to a question I had not asked: do fixture .dag modules share a name pool with production modules? swift-badger-524 caught it. Here is the pair, plus the measurement that decides between them.

The two denominators

# all .dag modules under dag/ and src/v2/
grep -rhoE '^fn [a-zA-Z_][a-zA-Z0-9_]*' dag src/v2 --include='*.dag' \
  | awk '{print $2}' | sort | uniq -c | awk '$1>1'
    -> 557 names, 1,456 declarations

# the same, excluding */fixture/* and */fixtures/*
    -> 366 names,   929 declarations

36% of the population lives in fixture trees. A fixture module is source handed to the compiler by a test, so whether two fixtures share a bare name says nothing about whether a real module reaches the wrong declaration.

The question is answerable without knowing the harness

Rather than guess whether fixtures pool with production, I classified every colliding name by which trees declare it:

470 names declared ONLY in fixture trees
  1 name declared in both

The single crossover is add — and its non-fixture declaration is src/v2/test/claim/manual/fn_as_value_test.dag, itself a manual test module. So no fixture-declared name collides with a production module at all. The two populations are disjoint at name grain.

That means the harness question does not change the production-facing denominator. Whichever way fixture isolation resolves, the collisions that can affect production code are the 366 names / 929 declarations, and the 191-name difference is entirely fixture-internal.

So the figure for this PR is 366 / 929

Still corpus-scale, still floor-class, and now it does not rest on an unmeasured property. Top of that population: string_eq 15, atom_node 15, census_of 10, is_admitted 9, symbol_eq 8, main 7, list_contains_str 7, is_refused 7.

The denominator caveat from my earlier comment stands unchanged: 929 is where the mechanism can bite, not 929 defects. A wrong answer still needs a reference to the bare name, a different module winning the slot, and differing behaviour.

Provenance, since this took three passes

swift-badger-524 raised the scope point with 632 / 1,725; that command's pathspec had no extension filter and swept .txt compiler fixtures (port_reading measured 24, of which 23 were tail_construct/*.txt). I re-measured at 557 / 1,456; that excluded .txt but not fixture .dag. They caught mine, I measured the pool split, and the split turned out to settle the question both of us had left open. All three numbers are in the record because the path to the right one is the useful part.

Nothing here asks for a change to the fix.

review 56662 on #9456 found docs/plans/import-namespace-program.md carrying
almost entirely the v2-corpus-self-host plan despite its own title and its own
authority at gunbc.plans.import_namespace_program. Verified, and the finding is
correct.

The cause is not this change. Both plan modules declare the same ten bare
module-scope names -- status_block and section_1 through section_9 -- and the
resolver collapses same-named module-scope fns into one global slot, so
import_namespace_program_body() calls section_N and reaches
v2_corpus_self_host's definitions. Measured at identity grain: the
import_namespace authority's own section_3 text ("3. The landing order, and why
grammar is last") appears zero times in its rendered output, while
v2_corpus_self_host's section_3 appears in both files.

That is the defect #9393 repairs, and it is open. Until it lands, regenerating
this path cannot produce a correct artifact, so the file is removed from this
change rather than landed corrupt -- the same call as review 56457 on #9392,
where sweeping unread projections into an unrelated repair was the error.

docs/plans/v2-corpus-self-host.md is KEPT, and the distinction is measured
rather than assumed: its rendered body contains its own authority's section_3,
so it is the module the collapsed slot resolves to and its output is correct.
Dropping it too would remove a correct artifact to look consistent.

This leaves the tree not fully derived on one path, which is a real and stated
gap: after #9393 lands, regenerating produces the correct
import-namespace-program.md and it should be committed then.

This now blocks a second, independent correctness path — recording it here because the PR has been merge-ready since 05:18 and the cost of it sitting has gone up.

While repairing orphaned DESIGN.md prose in #9456 I regenerated the whole artifact set and found docs/plans/import-namespace-program.md rendering another module's body under its own title. Measured at identity grain:

  • gunbc.plans.import_namespace_program's own section_3 (3. The landing order, and why grammar is last) appears 0 times in its rendered output
  • gunbc.plans.v2_corpus_self_host's section_3 appears in both generated files

Cause is exactly this PR's subject: both plan modules declare the same ten bare module-scope names (status_block, section_1…section_9), and the collapsed global slot means import_namespace_program_body() reaches the other module's definitions. The authority is correct and complete; the renderer cannot reach it.

So the defect is not confined to resolution semantics — it silently produces a corrupt generated document that contradicts its own single authority, which is the §3 failure the generated-artifact pipeline exists to prevent. A worker reading that plan is directed to the wrong program, and nothing in the tree reports it.

I removed the corrupt file from #9456 rather than landing it, and named this PR as the blocker. Once this merges, regenerating that path produces the correct artifact and it can be committed.

No change requested here and nothing to do on this PR — it is ready as-is. Flagging only so the merge order reflects that a second path depends on it.

review 56834 is correct and this is my defect. Commit dd04d3d deleted
docs/plans/import-namespace-program.md because it renders
gunbc.plans.v2_corpus_self_host's body under its own title. The merge in
4ad6197 regenerated every artifact via main_wet, which writes all 72
committed artifacts unconditionally, so the file came back and the merge
silently reverted a deliberate deletion.

Re-verified at identity grain rather than assumed: the file carries
v2_corpus_self_host's section_3 text and ZERO occurrences of
import_namespace_program's own section_3. Same corruption, same cause -- the
bare-name collision #9393 repairs, where both plan modules declare
status_block and section_1..section_9 and the collapsed global slot sends
import_namespace_program_body() to the other module's definitions.

WHAT I GOT WRONG, because the mechanism will repeat for anyone else: I treated
regeneration as safe because it is derived, and a derived operation cannot
know that one of its outputs is deliberately not committed. main_wet has no
notion of an artifact under repair. So the deletion is not durable across a
regeneration and must be re-applied after every one until #9393 lands. That is
a property of this interim state, not of the gate.

docs/plans/v2-corpus-self-host.md stays: it is the module the collapsed slot
resolves to, its rendered body contains its own authority's section_3, and
dropping a correct artifact to look symmetrical would remove real content.

…er regeneration

Main advanced to 3bbd53c. The generated-artifact merge driver refused rather
than picking a side on DESIGN.md -- correctly, since both sides changed it
since the merge base and neither side's bytes are the projection of the merged
authorities -- so the authority was hand-merged and the artifact regenerated.

The authority conflict was one row this time. Enumerated at fragment grain
rather than eyeballed: main contributes three `//gunbc/instruments:` label
spellings, this branch contributes the rehomed repo_ruleset clause. Main's row
is the base and the clause is re-inserted at an anchor present verbatim on both
sides, so the splice stays positional.

THE REGENERATION RE-ADDED THE CORRUPT PLAN AGAIN, and this time it was checked
for. docs/plans/import-namespace-program.md renders v2_corpus_self_host's body
under its own title, was deleted in dd04d3d, came back in 4ad6197's
regeneration, was re-dropped in fbb863c after review 56834, and came back
again here. main_wet writes all 72 committed artifacts unconditionally and has
no notion of an artifact under repair, so this deletion is not durable across a
regeneration and must be re-applied after every one until #9393 lands. That is
a property of the interim state, not a defect in the gate.

Evidence, and the occurrence check is the load-bearing half: zero tokens lost
against this branch's pre-merge DESIGN.md, and the three lost against main are
the same punctuation remnants of the deliberately rewritten POPULATION
sentences recorded in 4ad6197. A SET-BASED token check cannot see a count
reduction, so main's three `//gunbc/instruments:` occurrences were counted
directly and all three survive -- `grep -c` reports 1 because DESIGN.md's rows
are single enormous lines, which is exactly the kind of measurement that reads
as loss when nothing was lost.

…obal collision

#9459 landed "Five closure-global test fn name collisions repaired by adding

corpus by the same test found a sixth: `fn observed` is declared by four
existing modules --
test.claim.emit_subject_identity, test.claim.posix_principal_allocation,
test.claim.tool_readiness, and src/v2/test/claim/self_host/parity_window --
and this module added a fifth definition of the same bare name.

The witnesses passed before the rename, so the name resolved to the intended
definition here. That is exactly why it is worth repairing rather than leaving:
a bare name that happens to resolve correctly today is fragile by construction,
and under the collapsed global slot #9393 repairs, which definition wins is a
property of the closure rather than of this file. Renamed to
`artifact_observation_fixture`, which names its subject.

Every other declaration in the module was checked the same way and none
collides.

Also merges current main. Witnesses re-run against it: 10 PASS, 0 FAIL.

`docs/plans/import-namespace-program.md` was emitted carrying
`v2-corpus-self-host`'s entire body — the bare-name collision #9393
repaired. Reviews 56662 and 56834 required it be deleted rather than
committed corrupt, which left the drift gate legitimately refusing on
this branch for an absent expected artifact.

With #9393 on main the projection materializes through the repaired
route, so the file is regenerated and committed. It is the only artifact
whose bytes changed: the other 71 regenerate byte-identical.

Evidence it took the repaired route, not merely that the file exists:

  size          15996 -> 10852 bytes (15996 was v2-corpus-self-host's

…rect regeneration (#9456)

* Prose authored into the generated artifact is deleted by the next correct regeneration

DESIGN.md carried 1,295 bytes that no .dag authority produces. They were
authored straight into the generated file by #9418 (the bound-shaped-closure
failure mode, and two fragments of the emit-stage census receipt) and #9404
(the repo_ruleset boundary clause), so every correct regeneration deletes
them. tidy-wolf-288's #9427 regenerated DESIGN.md during a conflict
resolution and lost them; that run was correct and the loss was pre-existing
on main. This is the third orphaned-prose incident in this session, which is
what makes it a class rather than three accidents: the generated artifact is
writable, so prose lands there instead of in the authority and survives only
until someone regenerates.

Rehomed each passage into the authority that owns it -- the failure-mode
entry into gunbc.recurring_failure_mode as an ordinary roster row between
positional_citation and authority_substitution, the two bullets into
gunbc.design_document -- then regenerated. DESIGN.md now reproduces all three
passages from source, and lines 147 and 151 come back byte-identical to what
main had committed.

Regenerating also exposed drift in the other direction, which is the more
useful finding: the authorities already carried content main's generated
files did not. gunbc.recurring_failure_mode's diagnostic_name_mechanism_silent
entry (3,445 chars) had never reached DESIGN.md, three docs/plans files were
stale against their authorities, and two were never committed at all. Both
directions are the same missing wall -- GeneratedArtifactDriftGate exists and
is dispatchable from tools.ci_gates, but has no production caller, so nothing
compares the generated tree to what the authorities produce.

Measured: zero tokens lost from DESIGN.md, zero deletions in the line-140
diff against main. The three token differences in two plan docs are authority
rewrites main had not regenerated, not drops.

This does not re-enroll the drift gate; that is a separate change under its
own operator agreement, and until it lands the class stays at review
diligence -- a fourth incident is writable today exactly as the first three
were.

* Do not commit a generated plan that renders another module's body

review 56662 on #9456 found docs/plans/import-namespace-program.md carrying
almost entirely the v2-corpus-self-host plan despite its own title and its own
authority at gunbc.plans.import_namespace_program. Verified, and the finding is
correct.

The cause is not this change. Both plan modules declare the same ten bare
module-scope names -- status_block and section_1 through section_9 -- and the
resolver collapses same-named module-scope fns into one global slot, so
import_namespace_program_body() calls section_N and reaches
v2_corpus_self_host's definitions.

* Re-drop the corrupt generated plan the merge regeneration re-added

review 56834 is correct and this is my defect.

* Regenerate the projection that #9393 made materializable

`docs/plans/import-namespace-program.md` was emitted carrying

* Drop two plan markdowns their carriers forbid (review 57000)

`gunbc.plans.import_namespace_program` and `gunbc.plans.v2_corpus_self_host`
both declare `projection: PlanIsAuthorityOnly`. Neither markdown exists on
main. This PR was adding both. Deleted, not regenerated — the .dag carriers
already own the prose.

WHY IT HAPPENED, since the timing is the whole of it and it was not a
regenerator defect:

22:23:43Z I regenerate. The carrier then said EMIT, and main_wet
             correctly wrote docs/plans/import-namespace-program.md.
22:46:26Z #9415 lands PlanIsAuthorityOnly for both carriers, in the
same change that enrols the generated-artifact phase.
later I merge main. The post-merge regeneration correctly writes
NEITHER file — main_wet honours the ruling. But `git add -A`
preserved the leftovers from the pre-ruling pass.

So the work was right when done and the base moved under it. The
regenerator is not at fault and needs no change.

The review's deeper point is the one worth recording. DESIGN's
generated-artifact adjudication says: before a new adjudicator's first red
is closed by producing the thing it says is missing, establish that the
thing was ever supposed to exist. The gate's red here was ABSENT, not
DRIFTED, and I closed it by producing the file — the exact move that
paragraph forbids. I merged that sentence into DESIGN.md myself while
resolving the CI-row conflict and did not apply it to my own diff.

Verified after deletion:

drift gate exit 0, 0 refusals
main neither path present, so the diff no longer adds them

…witness uses

Two changes, both prerequisites for G0b consuming this carrier.

1. THE PROVENANCE SPLIT (ruled by silent-bear-842 before G0b proceeds).

`GeneratedArtifactObservationRefusedFinding` sat inside `observation_failures`
alongside `GeneratedArtifactContentDiffers`. Those are different kinds of
fact: a refusal is ROSTERED, ASKED, NO VERDICT REACHED; a difference is ASKED
AND ANSWERED, wrongly. They have different owners and opposite repairs, and
held in one list they render identically to any consumer reading a COUNT — a
run reaching no verdict on half the roster while reporting zero drifted is the
execution-provenance loss DESIGN names, arriving through the count nobody
reads.

The required Rust phase (#9415) already keeps `unadjudicated` as its own field
beside `drifted` and `absent`. Consuming this carrier as it stood would have
REGRESSED that separation — a de-fork landing wearing the de-fork's
justification. So `UnadjudicatedArtifactFinding` is its own type in its own
field, and after the split a provenance finding CANNOT inhabit
`observation_failures`: the collapse is unrepresentable rather than
discouraged.

Done now because #9487 has never landed. Reshaping a carrier before it has
consumers costs one edit; after, it costs the carrier plus every consumer.

EVIDENCE, by mutation rather than by reading. Emptying the provenance bucket
to restore the collapse turns both separation witnesses RED:

  a_refusal_is_provenance_and_never_a_comparison_result FAIL under mutation
  every_cause_is_reported_together FAIL under mutation
  a_fully_observed_population_has_no_unadjudicated_members PASS — correct, its
fixture carries no refusal, so it is the clean-side control and is
    properly insensitive to this mutation

Restored byte-identically afterwards; 12 of 12 witnesses pass.

2. THE WITNESS HAD NO IMPORTS AT ALL.

It relied on corpus-global bare-name resolution. That is why it passed
entry-scoped and refused in the floor: `GeneratedArtifact` is declared in TWO
modules — `gunbc.generated_artifact` and `v2.std.artifact` — so the bare name
is ambiguous, and #9393 tightened exactly this. Now imported explicitly from
the module that owns each name.

… the gate's head-only diagnostic (#9487)

* wip: G0a complete generated-artifact finding population + witnesses (10/10 green)

* Subject-qualify the fixture helper: `observed` was a fifth closure-global collision

#9459 landed "Five closure-global test fn name collisions repaired by adding
subject" while this branch was open. Checking my own witness module against the
corpus by the same test found a sixth: `fn observed` is declared by four
existing modules --
test.claim.emit_subject_identity, test.claim.posix_principal_allocation,
test.claim.tool_readiness, and src/v2/test/claim/self_host/parity_window --
and this module added a fifth definition of the same bare name.

The witnesses passed before the rename, so the name resolved to the intended

* Hoist the provenance finding into its own field, and import what the witness uses

Two changes, both prerequisites for G0b consuming this carrier.

1. THE PROVENANCE SPLIT (ruled by silent-bear-842 before G0b proceeds).

the module that owns each name.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Each finding renders its own remedy, and two names the witness used resolve

THE UNIVERSAL REMEDY IS DELETED. run_generated_artifact_drift_gate_body
appended one closing instruction -- do not hand-edit, regenerate via
main_wet -- to every nonempty finding population. That is correct for a
content difference and wrong for every other class the carrier already
distinguishes, so a single widening arm stood where a typed per-class
answer was available in the findings themselves: the absorbing fallback
in remediation form.

The classes have different owners and different repairs. A missing
expected observation means the observer or the population producer is
incomplete and NOTHING was adjudicated for that artifact, so regenerating
cannot repair it and greening it that way hides the completeness defect.
A duplicate points at identity or population construction. An unknown
observation means the registry and the tree disagree about whether the
artifact belongs in the tree at all -- and DESIGN carries the receipt for
taking the global instruction literally, since this gate's first red
included a markdown file deleted ON PURPOSE by a commit whose entire
subject was that the .dag carrier is the authority; regenerating would
have permanently and silently enforced the reverse of a decision already
taken. An extra-validation failure is a defect in the generated bytes, so
regeneration reproduces it. An unadjudicated artifact reached no verdict
and is neither clean nor drifted.

Each finding now renders its own remedy and the run-level sentence is
gone. main_wet is still named where it IS the remedy; it is no longer the
default for classes it cannot repair.

THE WITNESS IS DISCRIMINATING RATHER THAN CONFIRMING. Asserting that the
drift line names the producer would stay green under the deleted global
sentence, because a universal suffix satisfies it too. The load-bearing
clause is that a missing-observation line must NOT name the producer, so
reintroducing any run-level remedy turns it red.

TWO NAMES THE WITNESS ALREADY USED DID NOT RESOLVE.
expected_cardinality_finding_rendered and
generated_artifact_population_findings_empty were called but never
imported. Found by reading the import block against the call sites rather
than from a run: the required floor never reaches this witness while main
is red, so nothing in CI would have said so.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Two more names the witness used resolve, found by resolving every free name instead of a guessed list

review 57229 found GithooksPrePushArtifact (used at the four-artifact
population fixture) and assess_generated_artifact_population (used at
three sites, one of them the test that proves the boolean projection is
not a second opinion) called but never imported. Both verified against
their defining modules: gunbc.generated_artifact declares the variant,
gunbc.generated_artifact_assessment declares the function.

THE FINDING IS RIGHT AND SO IS ITS SEVERITY. This module carries the
discriminating REDs the change rests on, and a module that does not
resolve does not execute, so the evidence would have been description
rather than execution -- the failure this witness exists to prevent,
one level up.

WHAT I CHANGED ABOUT THE CHECK, WHICH MATTERS MORE THAN THE TWO NAMES.
The previous commit fixed two missing imports in this same file and
missed these two, because it grepped a HAND-WRITTEN LIST of candidate
symbols: a check that can only find names the author already suspected,
which is why a second pass found more. Replaced with resolving every
free name in the module -- strip comments and string literals so prose
cannot produce hits, collect imports, local declarations, parameters and
lambda binders, subtract builtins, report the remainder. That method
independently reproduces exactly the review's two names and nothing
else, which is the cross-check that the roster is now complete rather
than merely longer.

Run over the other three changed modules it reports only host builtins
(the drift-gate receipt globals the interpreter registers, asserted in
cli_run.rs rather than declared in .dag) and member access on
Filesystem, so the witness was the only affected module.

NOT VERIFIED BY EXECUTION. The required floor never reaches this witness
while main is red, and a local compile of the entry has not completed.
The claim here is symbol resolution against the defining modules, which
is what the finding was about, and no stronger.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* The path is a projection of its parts: artifact_location becomes the authority, artifact_path the derivation

WHY, AND IT IS NOT TIDINESS. The absent state the G0 ruling asks for --
a typed spelling for "the read executed and established the file is
absent", distinct from "the population contains no row for this
identity" -- is established by LISTING a directory and looking for an
entry inside it, never by a read failing. extdeps.filesystem
FilesystemFileObservation already does exactly that and its own
annotation says why: a read's success channel is the one channel that
cannot separate absent from unreadable.

That carrier needs a directory and an entry name. artifact_path returned
a joined string, so the only way to get them was to split on the last
separator -- re-deriving by parsing precisely what the construction
already knew, and introducing a failure mode the construction does not
have. So the match now answers ArtifactLocation { directory, name } and
artifact_path is derived from it.

ONE AUTHORITY PER PATH, INCLUDING THE BORROWED ONES. Two variants took
their path from another module: PlanArtifact through plan_doc_path and
GeneratedArtifactMergeDriverArtifact through a constant. Splitting either
HERE would have duplicated that module's structural knowledge in this
one, so each is decomposed where it is constructed -- gunbc.plan gains
plan_doc_directory and plan_doc_name, gunbc.generated_artifact_merge_driver
gains the directory and name -- and each path constant is now derived
from its own parts. Every consumer of those paths reads the same bytes.

THE ROOT IS `.`, NOT "". A root-level artifact's directory is the
repository root, which is a real directory that can be listed. The empty
string is not a directory and would force an arm at every consumer for
"this artifact has no directory". Carrying `.` puts that knowledge in one
place -- the join, which is the only thing that knows the root renders
without a prefix.

BYTE PRESERVATION IS THE HAZARD AND IT IS WITNESSED. artifact_path is
what the drift gate reads the committed file at, so one changed separator
repoints an adjudicated artifact and the gate compares authority bytes
against the wrong file while still reporting a clean population. The new
witness pins the bytes against INDEPENDENTLY AUTHORED literals -- one row
per construction shape: a root artifact, a nested literal, a directory
carried by another module's constant, and a name computed from a slug.
Folding the registry and asserting what it returns would be
measure() == measure(), which cannot fail.

EXECUTED, not merely compiled. Three witnesses run through gunbc run:
artifact_path_is_byte_identical_after_the_location_split returned true,
root_level_artifacts_carry_a_listable_directory returned true, and
remedies_are_class_specific_not_universal still returns true, which is
the regression signal that this refactor did not disturb the previous
change. (All three exit 2: the runner refuses to map a Bool to an exit
code rather than fabricating one, so the value is in the refusal text.)

WHAT THIS DOES NOT DO: the observer still does not route through
filesystem_file_observation and the finding population still has no arm
for absent, indeterminate or disagree. This is the decomposition those
need, landed and witnessed on its own, not the absent state itself.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* The observer establishes absence from a listing, so "not there" stops being "could not look"

THE RULING'S CENTRAL INSTRUCTION. The producer mapped EVERY unsuccessful
Filesystem.Read to GeneratedArtifactObservationRefused, so "the
observation could not be made" and "the observation was made and the
file is not there" shared one arm. They have opposite owners: a refusal
names an authority to repair and reached NO verdict; an absence IS a
verdict about the repository tree and asks whether the artifact was ever
meant to be committed at all.

THE CARRIER IS REUSED, NOT RE-COINED, AND THAT IS THE LOAD-BEARING
CHOICE. The ruling sketched CommittedArtifactObservation = Present |
Absent | ReadRefused. extdeps.filesystem.filesystem_io already declares
FilesystemFileObservation with FOUR arms, and the three-arm shape is not
a smaller version of it -- it is that carrier with a distinction deleted.
Its absence arm is grounded in a LISTING, so absence is ESTABLISHED
rather than inferred from a read failing, and the module's own annotation
says why: a read's success channel is exactly the channel that cannot
separate absent from unreadable. Minting the sketch would have added a
seventh site to the six-row repair roster
filesystem_absence_establishment_adoption_standing already tracks. The
fourth arm has no home in the sketch at all: listing-says-absent followed
by read-succeeds is two observations of DIFFERENT INSTANTS, and picking a
winner fabricates one consistent world out of two. Confirmed by product
direction; if the thread still wants the mint it must declare the dropped
distinction rather than lose it silently.

ONE LISTING PER DIRECTORY, NOT PER ARTIFACT. Four artifacts share
.github/workflows and three share .githooks, so a per-artifact listing
would ask the host the same question repeatedly -- obeying the letter of
this module's one-Read-per-artifact operator ruling while violating its
spirit. The distinct directories are listed once and every artifact joins
its own row.

A MISSING JOIN ROW REFUSES RATHER THAN REPORTING ABSENT. Every
artifact's directory is in the roster by construction, so the lookup
cannot miss; if it ever did, answering "the file is absent" would
establish an absence from the failure of our own bookkeeping, which is
the error this change removes. The lookup matches on first's Optional, so
the empty case is a real arm rather than a guarded assumption.

ABSENT IS NOT UNADJUDICATED. unadjudicated_findings deliberately does not
claim an absent artifact: it reached a verdict. Its remedy says to
establish that projection policy requires the artifact BEFORE
regenerating, because DESIGN's receipt for this gate's first red is a
markdown file deleted ON PURPOSE that a bare regenerate would have
silently resurrected.

EXECUTED, WITH A DISCRIMINATING RED. Six witnesses returned true: the
three new ones and three regression checks (path byte-identity,
class-specific remedies, boolean projection) that confirm the observer
rewrite disturbed nothing. Then absent was RE-COLLAPSED into the
unadjudicated arm -- the exact pre-change behaviour -- and
absent_is_a_finding_and_refused_is_unadjudicated returned FALSE; mutation
reverted and the tree verified clean. So the distinction is asserted by
something that can fail. The gate entry compiles with 0 blocking errors.

committed_absent_is_distinct_from_expected_observation_missing is the
ruling's acceptance item 7 stated as a test.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* An empty observation population cannot green a non-empty roster (acceptance item 9)

THE GAP WAS EVIDENCE, NOT BEHAVIOUR. The carrier already forecloses this:
expected_cardinality_findings joins on the EXPECTED roster, so every
expected identity with no observation becomes its own missing finding and
an empty population over a non-empty roster cannot be empty. Nothing
asserted it, so acceptance item 9 held by construction and by nobody's
measurement -- which is specification-without-execution on the one item
whose failure is silent.

WHY THIS ONE MATTERS MORE THAN ITS SIZE. DESIGN names the
empty-observation narrow as STRICTLY WORSE than the absorbing fallback it
already forbids: a widen is merely expensive, a narrow is silently
uncovered. If the producer returns nothing -- a listing walk that
refused, a roster that came back empty, a population an exception ate --
then "no findings" and "nothing is wrong" are the same bytes and the gate
reports clean over a tree it never looked at. Bottom-as-answer conflated
with bottom-as-ignorance.

THE SECOND CLAUSE IS WHAT MAKES IT A TEST. Asserting only that an empty
observation list produces findings would be satisfied by almost any
shape. The witness also requires that an empty ROSTER still greens, so it
pins WHERE the greenness may come from: the roster being empty, never the
observations being empty. Those two are indistinguishable in the output
and have opposite meanings.

EXECUTED, WITH A DISCRIMINATING RED. The witness returned true. Then the
narrow was introduced in its natural disguise -- a short-circuit
returning empty findings when the observation list is empty, which reads
as an ordinary efficiency guard -- and it returned FALSE, with
expected_cardinality dropping from 3 to 0. Mutation reverted and the tree
verified clean.

* Absence survives alongside every other cause (acceptance item 6)

every_cause_is_reported_together predates the absent arm: it pins four
causes -- a drift, a refusal, a missing identity and an unknown
observation -- and cannot speak for the fifth. Item 6 asks that content,
absence, read refusal, generation refusal, cardinality and unknown
observation all survive TOGETHER.

WIDENED IN A NEW FIXTURE RATHER THAN BY EDITING THAT ONE. Two witnesses
are authored against mixed_observations, and shifting their expected
counts to cover a new cause would have made their existing assertions
less legible for no gain. The old fixture keeps saying exactly what it
said.

THE CLAIM IS SIMULTANEITY, NOT PRESENCE. That absence is reported at all
is covered by an earlier witness on its own. What this adds is that it is
reported WHILE four other causes are outstanding, landing in the
comparison bucket beside the drift while the refusal stays alone in
provenance -- which is the exact collapse this carrier was built to
remove, where one cause is named and the rest stay invisible until it is
repaired and the gate re-run. The rendering is asserted too, so a
population that held every cause but printed only some would still fail.

Executed: returned true, with every_cause_is_reported_together and the
empty-population witness re-run as regression checks and both still true.
