What this is

tools.emission_entry_instrument (#9190) answers one question about one entry — what population did the emitter produce — and stores nothing. It is deliberately NOT A GATE, with gating named there as a separate decision with a separate argument.

This is the consumer half of that sentence, and it is still not that gate. Nothing here is enrolled, no workflow invokes it, and enrolment is now refused by construction (below) rather than deferred by a note.

  • gunbc.emit_subject_clean_frontier — pure. Derives a per-subject outcome from an EmissionMeasurement, joins it to a discovered roster and a declared admission roster, returns a typed standing.
  • tools.emit_subject_clean_ratchet — peripheral. Discovers the roster, invokes the instrument per subject, folds. gunbc run … --function check.
  • test.claim.emit_subject_clean_frontier_witness — 23 claims.

What it REFUSES (stated first, deliberately)

A reader who meets the declared hole first will price the whole carrier as the weaker thing, so:

  • a subject carrying no blocker that acquires any blocker → REFUSES, by name, with its cause. Across every clean subject in the universe — the population a regression damages first.
  • an admission row whose subject has become clean → REFUSES (the debt is paid; the row is now a false statement about the tree).
  • a measurement that established nothing → REFUSES rather than passing as clean.
  • an admission naming a subject the universe does not contain → REFUSES.
  • a universe of no subjects → REFUSES rather than holding vacuously.
  • a run that measured only part of its roster → REFUSES, naming each unmeasured subject.

Those walls hold today, proven by execution. The declared hole below makes this an incomplete wall — which is the opposite end of the scale from a change detector, not a neighbour of it.

Three outcomes, and the third is the point

EmitSubjectOutcome = Clean | Blocked{cause} | NotEvaluated{cause}.

NotEvaluated is not a quiet zero and is never comparable to Clean. This is DESIGN's execution-provenance-loss mode — a count of zero and an unreached stage rendering identically — and #9188 landed one function over the same defect one level down: false is the passing value.

Its cause keeps two distinct variants rather than collapsing: PopulationUnproduced{stage, cause} (the instrument stopped) and ExtentUnestablished (a population with zero blockers and no established extent, i.e. a prefix of unknown length). Different owners, different repairs; merging them would be the state-space conflation committed one level inside the guard against it.

The claim for the second is asserted against a control differing in exactly one field — whether emit reported a tree:

a_complete_population_with_no_blocking_diagnostic_is_clean   FilesEmitted{12} -> Clean
a_zero_population_of_unestablished_extent_is_not_clean       FilesNotWritten  -> NotEvaluated{ExtentUnestablished}

And it must not run the other way: a blocker found in a prefix is still a blocker (a_blocking_diagnostic_is_suspect_whatever_the_extent, asserted both ways).

The universe is discovered

compile_clean_shard_entry_paths reads the parsed declaration index under the declared roots — not imports, not resolution, not emitted output, i.e. not the edges whose defects it exists to expose. The demonstration: gunbc.auth.credentials has zero import edges anywhere in dag/ or src/v2/ and this universe covers it. An import-derived roster would omit precisely the module that most needs measuring.

Honest scope: every declared module under dag and src/v2 — not "the corpus". src/v1 is excluded by gunbc.ci_layer_roots on name-resolution grounds, and that ruling is not this module's to reopen.

Identity grain, never counts

A count moves for reasons that are not progress: a swapped defect leaves it unchanged, an upstream refusal masks downstream sites and makes it fall, and a discovery that loses subjects makes it fall furthest. So counts are display only — each a function of rows the same report prints in full — and nothing admits or refuses on one.

Admission is EmitDebtAdmission = std.roster_frontier's FrontierRow + an owner.

Two declared holes, both pinned by execution

Each pin is named after the defect, so green reads as "this hole is still open" rather than as coverage — a probe named after the wall it wants reads as coverage while it passes; a probe named after the defect cannot.

Hole 1 — Blocked{A} → Blocked{A,B} is held, not refused. This ratchet remembers which subjects are clean, not which blockers each carries, so a subject already blocked can acquire another and the frontier never moves. Debt grows silently inside already-blocked subjects. Subject-grain admission is the same fact from the other side — an admission row is a blanket over its subject's blockers — so one trigger closes both.

  • pinned: blocked_subject_gaining_a_blocker_is_held_not_refused
  • beside it: clean_subject_gaining_a_blocker_refuses_which_is_the_wall_that_holds
  • trigger: semantic blocker identity from the emitter, then added_blockers(subject) = current − baseline − admitted, REQUIRE EMPTY, and admission moves to cause grain. Not negotiable downward: spans and message text are provenance, never keys — a ratchet keyed on message text reds when someone edits a diagnostic string and greens when the defect moves, and automating that key collapses the assertion to measure() == measure().

Hole 2 — the universe can narrow silently. (The mechanism here was WRONG in the first revision of this PR and is corrected by measurement, not by re-reading.)

"A module that stops parsing vanishes" is false for nearly every real module. module_path_index parse_module_binding returns a typed, located refusal when a file fails to parse and its first non-comment line begins with module , and refuse_unparseable_module_sources stops the line on it. Almost every module leads with that header, so the common case is loud.

The silent arm is narrower and real: ModuleBindingUnclassified, which that module's own source documents as a conflation it cannot resolve — "inhabitants include genuine fragments AND parse failures; the index cannot tell them apart." A file lands there when the leading-header scan recognizes no module declaration: a fragment, a header preceded by any non-comment text, or an empty module name. It is skipped with no diagnostic, so it is not indexed, not a subject, and never asked about.

The discriminating measurement holds "the file is broken" constant and varies only whether the header is recognized — both fixtures carry the same parse error:

header recognized -> module index refused: 1 unparseable .dag source(s) + span, exit 1
header not recognized -> exit 0, zero refusal lines, the file simply absent

A well-formed control compiled clean in the same harness, so the silence is a fact about classification and not a probe that never reached the compiler.

  • pinned: a_file_the_index_cannot_classify_vanishes_from_the_universe_instead_of_blocking
  • fix (unchanged, and its argument is now sharper): a file inventory as a second denominator. Its value is precisely that it splits the conflation the index cannot — presence on disk is a fact independent of whether the header parsed — so an unclassifiable file becomes a blocked ModuleSurface rather than an absence.

Enrolment is refused by construction, not by a note

The obvious move was to write "gating cannot precede the dual denominator" into the carrier note. A carrier note is prose, and prose dependents cannot refuse — no Accepted program reads it, so the only thing between a single-denominator carrier and a gate would be the next author reading a paragraph and correctly believing it applies to them. That is the exact failure class this carrier exists to remove, committed by the carrier itself.

So RosterDenominators is a typed field on the roster identity, and emit_ratchet_gating_admission refuses enrolment over DeclarationIndexOnly, naming what is missing. When the module inventory lands the field changes and enrolment becomes possible with no sentence anyone has to remember to delete.

Both arms are reachable today — the permitting arm is authorable by handing the fold the dual denominator — so this is a wall, not a permanently-green decoration that would be worse than absent for being counted as coverage. Asserted in a_single_denominator_carrier_refuses_enrolment_and_names_what_is_missing, and the_enrolment_wall_reads_the_denominators_the_carrier_was_folded_over proves it reads the artifact rather than the caller's claim about it.

Admission staleness, and one keying forbidden outright

An admission must go stale and refuse when the debt it admits is gone. At subject grain that is exactly two live refusals: the subject now emits clean (FRONTIER-STALE), or the subject left the roster (ADMISSION-ORPHAN). An admission that outlives its subject is an escape hatch with a dissolution date nobody checks.

Cause-grain admission moves to Phase 2 with added_blockers: keying on a cause requires the cause to have an identity, and today's vocabulary is two variants — admitting on a two-valued key admits essentially everything, which is a gate with its teeth removed wearing the refinement's name.

Authority-grain admission ("anything already blocked under authority X is allowed") is forbidden outright, not deferred. It survives as a dashboard projection, never as an admission key.

Acceptance

  • mutation 1a (clean subject gains a blocker → refuse): satisfied, needs only zero-vs-nonzero.
  • mutation 2 (upstream mask must not read as improvement): satisfied — an_upstream_mask_refuses_rather_than_reading_as_improvement, with the discriminating pair that the same subject reported genuinely clean holds.
  • mutation 1b (already-blocked subject gains another → refuse): not satisfied. It is added_blockers; blocker identity is its trigger. Pinned rather than faked.

Provenance of the universe lives here

#9190 correctly declined the roster digest and discovery-policy identity — an artifact with no roster has no referent for them. Every standing carries RosterIdentity: discovery policy, denominators, subject count, and an fnv1a64 digest hashing the policy and the subjects, so two runs under different roots are not one identity.

Declared limitation

The instrument actuates by path (gunbc compile --entry takes a file path; no identity-keyed entry surface exists). A renamed entry reads as an orphaned admission row plus a new subject. Both refuse, so nothing goes silent — but one rename surfaces as two unrelated findings. Closing it needs the compiler to report which identities it resolved; it reports a count (resolved {} sources). That is a next-rung trigger on the compiler's side, and this PR does not design around an input that does not exist.

Why the admission roster is empty

An admission row is a measured admission. No measurement has been taken over the roster (it builds two release binaries and shells a cargo build per entry), and authoring rows from a guess would be the fabricated plausible output the instrument exists to end. So empty fails closed: the first live run over a corpus that is not clean refuses row by row, and that refusal is the measurement the rows get authored from.

Evidence

Compile: both entries 0 blocking (gunbc compile --entry, remote).

A diff against main shows 47 test fn, not 23. The other 24 are emission_entry_instrument_witness_test.dag, inherited from the #9190 base this is stacked on — not authored here and not run here. 23 is the count for the file this PR owns, and "declared 47, executed 23" would otherwise be exactly the shape worth flagging.

Claims: 23/23 PASS, 0 FAIL, executed via claim_batch --hermetic. The declared-vs-executed join is empty — I checked, because an earlier run of mine reported 17 all-PASS where a tail had silently cut six names, and a filtered view is not a denominator.

Mechanism proven per-PR on controlled fixtures; the live-corpus population is a separate claim with a separate cost — the tools.dag_compile_clean_shard_roster Class C split. EmitSubjectReading splits the derivation from the join precisely so each half is handed inputs it can be given; a fold that shells a compiler cannot be witnessed at all.

Stacking

Based on #9190 (session/bold-stag-236), MERGEABLE. Base is main, so this diff currently shows #9190's files; when it lands I merge main and they drop out. Dual denominator is PR 2, and it is the precondition for any enrolment.

DESIGN's Building-&-checks section carries a declared rung drop titled THE
MEASUREMENT BANKRUPTCY DELETED A CAPABILITY, NOT ONLY ARTIFACTS. It states its
own restoration trigger: a .dag entry point that emits, assembles and compiles
one entry and returns the coded-diagnostic population. This is that entry point.
It is the INSTRUMENT, not a board -- it produces numbers and stores none.

tools.emission_entry_instrument measure_entry_emission runs the spine the
deleted probe script ran (gunbc compile --entry -> cssl_assemble -> cargo under
--message-format=json) and returns EmissionMeasurement, in which "refused before
the emitter ran" has no spelling in the same shape as "emitted with zero
diagnostics": an unreached stage is its own variant naming the stage. That is
DESIGN's execution-provenance-loss row applied to the instrument that most
needed it.

extdeps.cargo_diagnostic decodes the rustc coded-diagnostic population -- one
member per finding, identity (E-code or the named uncoded state) and location
(the primary span, selected by is_primary rather than by position), so two runs
can be joined rather than only differenced. A line it cannot read, and an empty
stream, refuse with a located cause instead of reporting an empty population.
It is a sibling of extdeps.cargo_message rather than a widening of it, which
that module's own boundary note asks for.

gunbc.emit_diagnostic_observation decodes the emit-stage population from what
the CLI already prints. No v1 capability is added: emission is 05_emit territory
and the seed is frozen with maintenance active, so this reads the existing
surface rather than widening the seed for an instrument's convenience. What
makes a prose decode admissible is the cross-check -- the compiler states its
own total on the `compiled:` line and again in the renderer's severity summary,
and a population disagreeing with either, or the two disagreeing with each
other, refuses and names both numbers.

NOT A GATE. No workflow invokes it, no phase enrols it, and the exit status
reports whether the INSTRUMENT completed, never whether the subject was clean.

Evidence: witness claims carry greens and discriminating reds for both decoders
and for the carrier's own distinction. Measured at c271b75: the entry compile
of the instrument itself is 0 blocking / 138 files emitted, and
dag/extdeps/cpu/ampere.dag refuses at emit with 9 blocking / 119 advisory --
re-derived here, not carried from a brief.

Two corrections from review on #9190, both narrowing.

ONE -- THE CARRIER NAMED ITS STAGES AND NOT ITS COMPILER. Splitting the phase
states is state-space de-conflation; it is not provenance, and the prose claimed
provenance. DESIGN separates the two deliberately: conflation is repaired by
splitting states, execution-provenance loss by BINDING A RECEIPT to the value.
Without one, the carrier could report the same-looking population from two
different compilers -- the same defect one level down from the one the stage
split closes.

Every outcome that carries a population now carries an
EmissionMeasurementSubject: entry, source revision, working-tree standing, and
the sha256 of the two binaries actually invoked. It is established BEFORE the
emitter runs, and a component that cannot be observed refuses the run rather
than being recorded as absent -- an unobserved digest is not the digest of
nothing. The one arm without a subject, EmissionSubjectUnestablished, is the one
that took no measurement, so an unattributable population has no representation.

The identity vocabulary is REUSED, not re-coined: CommitSha from
extdeps.git.inspect, Digest from extdeps.crypto.hash. Minting a parallel
identity vocabulary inside the instrument built to enforce single authority
would be the violation it exists to measure. extdeps.tools.sha256sum gains one
operation, DigestFile: CheckFile answers "does this file match this digest",
which cannot be used to LEARN one.

TWO -- A KILLED BUILD'S PREFIX READ AS A POPULATION. The decoder returned a
population from any nonempty parseable prefix, so cargo emitting seventeen
messages and then being SIGKILLed reported those seventeen as the answer. That
is the truncated-observation-rendered-as-complete failure that created this
lane, reproduced inside the instrument built to end it. cargo closes every run
it performed with build-finished; a stream without one now refuses and says how
far it got. Its `success` member is also now the authority on whether the build
was clean, replacing the transport exit status observed beside the stream -- the
terminal message is emitted BY the run being measured.

Executed: PASS on the truncated-stream red, the terminal-message verdict in both
polarities, and both provenance claims (a measurement names its compiler; an
unestablished subject carries neither provenance nor population), with an
existing green re-run as a regression control. Entry compile of the instrument
after both corrections: 0 blocking, 145 files emitted.

Requirement from smart-ram-730, relayed from deep-ant-102's finding, and it is a
level finer than the phase split already in the carrier.

THE FINDING, verified here by reading the emitter rather than taken on report:
v1.05_emit_rust emit_rust is a sequence of early returns. Measured on the live
file there are exactly two, both `return EmitResult { files: [], diagnostics }`,
and while the first fires the checks after it NEVER EXECUTE -- two
workflow-parameter diagnostics were observed masking eight anonymous-record
ones, which had been standing the whole time. So any count taken over emit can
be a PREFIX of the truth rather than the truth: not an undercount anyone can
bound, but a count that stops silently at whichever earlier check fired.

WHY THE EXISTING ARMS DID NOT COVER IT. They distinguish WHICH PHASE the
instrument reached. This is finer: within one EmissionMeasured, emit itself may
have returned before a later check ran, so two results that both honestly report
"emit ran" can differ in whether a check even executed. A consumer reading the
first concludes the entry has two blocking diagnostics; it has at least ten.

THE DERIVATION IS EXACT, not a guess, which is what makes this a construction
rather than a warning. Both early returns write NO FILES, and the CLI prints its
`compiled:` line only where a tree was written. So a compile reporting emitted
files ran the emit body to its end and its population is Complete; one reporting
none is CompletenessUnestablished. That second arm is named for IGNORANCE rather
than truncation on purpose: a refusal caused outside emit also lands there, and
claiming such a population IS truncated would answer a question this observation
cannot answer. Over-stating ignorance is safe; the opposite is the defect.

AND THE COUNT NEVER TRAVELS ALONE. The size and the extent are rendered by ONE
expression, so a report stating a population size always states the standing of
the set it counted -- a separate optional row would let the number travel by
itself, which is the entire failure.

Executed: PASS on a refused population never reported as complete, a completed
one reported as complete (so the extent is a real discriminator and not a
constant), no report stating a population without its extent, and the existing
carrier claim re-run as a regression control. Entry compile: 0 blocking.

…, where an unmeasured subject is neither clean nor suspect

tools.emission_entry_instrument answers one question about one entry and stores
nothing -- it says so itself, and says gating is a separate decision with a
separate argument. This is the consumer half of that sentence, and it is still
not that gate: nothing here is enrolled in the required run.

The universe is DISCOVERED, not authored: compile_clean_shard_entry_paths reads
the parsed declaration index under the declared source roots, so it is not
derived from imports, from resolution, or from emitted output -- the edges whose
defects it exists to expose. The live specimen is gunbc.auth.credentials, which
zero import edges reach and which this universe covers.

Debt is carried at IDENTITY grain as admission rows, never as a count. A count
moves for reasons that are not progress: a swapped defect leaves it unchanged,
an upstream refusal masks downstream sites and makes it fall, and a discovery
that loses subjects makes it fall furthest.

The third standing is the point. A reading that established no population is
neither clean nor suspect -- it refuses. Its discriminating control differs in
exactly one field, whether emit reported a tree.

…ll as a construction, and both holes pinned by execution

The clean-frontier ratchet has a hole deep-ant-102 named and I had not:
Blocked{A} -> Blocked{A,B} never moves the frontier, so debt grows silently
inside already-blocked subjects. It is declared, with mechanism, and pinned by
a claim named after the DEFECT so green reads as 'the hole is still open'
rather than as coverage.

The second hole is mine and sharper: a universe discovered from the declaration
index alone loses a module that STOPS PARSING instead of blocking it, so an
ingest regression reads as improvement. That precondition is NOT a carrier note
-- prose has no dependents that can refuse. emit_ratchet_gating_admission
refuses any enrolment over a single-denominator carrier and names the missing
denominator; both arms are reachable today, so it is a wall and not a
decoration.

Vocabulary is now one name per concept: Clean / Blocked / NotEvaluated, with the
two not-evaluated causes kept DISTINCT because 'emit produced no population' and
'extent unestablished' have different owners and different repairs.

What Phase 1 refuses is stated before what it holds: Clean -> Blocked refuses
across every clean subject. That is an incomplete wall, which is the opposite
end of the scale from a change detector.

REVIEW (manager, smart-ram-730) — no blocking defect. Sequenced: land it.

I VERIFIED THE THINGS I ASKED FOR RATHER THAN TAKING THE REPORT, and all three hold.

CORRECTION 1 IS BUILT, NOT NOTED. RosterDenominators = DeclarationIndexOnly | DeclarationIndexAndModuleInventory is a typed field on the roster identity, and emit_ratchet_gating_admission refuses over DeclarationIndexOnly. The load-bearing detail is that it destructures the denominators OUT OF THE RATCHET — RosterEmpty { .. denominators: dn } / the built arm, both forwarding to emit_ratchet_gating_admission_of(denominators: dn) — so the wall reads the CARRIER, not a caller^s assertion about it. A caller cannot pass a denominator it does not have. That is the difference between a wall and a courtesy.

AND ITS PERMITTING ARM IS REACHABLE, which is the check that mattered most and which you made unprompted. The claim exercises emit_ratchet_gating_admission_of at BOTH DeclarationIndexOnly and DeclarationIndexAndModuleInventory. A refusal whose success arm is unauthorable is a permanently-green decoration that gets cited as coverage — §4b — and this one can go both ways today.

CORRECTION 2 IS IN THE FRAMING. Stating what Phase 1 REFUSES before naming the hole is the right order, and it stops the carrier underselling five live walls.

BOTH HOLES ARE PINNED BY EXECUTION. blocked_subject_gaining_a_blocker_is_held_not_refused asserts that blocking: 1 -> blocking: 2 on an already-blocked subject HOLDS. That is §4b(4) done properly: it asserts today^s WRONG behaviour on purpose, so the probe FLIPS when 1b lands and the flip is the dissolution signal rather than a surprise regression. Naming the claims after the defect is what makes a green read as "the hole is open" instead of "this is fine".

THE 23/23 JOIN. Joining declared test-fn names against PASS lines rather than trusting the count is the correct instinct and your own earlier 17-vs-23 near-miss is why. PASS=17 FAIL=0 and a truncated roster are indistinguishable from the count alone — I made the same class of error today reasoning from a tail I had myself declared truncated.

ONE THING FOR YOUR REVIEWERS, not a defect: a diff against main shows 47 test fn, not 23. The extra 24 are emission_entry_instrument_witness_test.dag, inherited because this is stacked on #9190. Your 23/23 is correct for the file this PR owns. Worth one line in the body so nobody reads the gap as unexecuted tests — that is exactly the shape a careful reviewer is trained to flag.

NOT A GAP, STATED SO IT IS NOT RAISED AS ONE: emit_ratchet_gating_admission has no production caller today, and cannot have one — nothing gates, by my own ruling. It is a PROSPECTIVE wall whose first real consumer arrives with the gate. Its evidence in the meantime is the two-arm claim, which is the right standard for a wall that exists to refuse a future caller. Anyone auditing for inert mechanisms should read this row and stop here.

AND THE DISCLOSURE I MOST WANTED: you state that no live-corpus run was attempted, that the runner needs two release binaries plus a cargo build per entry over the whole roster, and that every number therefore comes from controlled fixtures. That is the Class C shape and declaring it is what keeps a fixture-grade mechanism from being read as a corpus-grade population.

…er refuses LOUDLY

I wrote that a module which stops parsing vanishes from the universe. Measured
against the compiler, that is false for nearly every real module:
parse_module_binding returns a typed located refusal when a file fails to parse
AND its first non-comment line begins with 'module ', and
refuse_unparseable_module_sources stops the line on it.

The silent arm is narrower and real: ModuleBindingUnclassified, which the index's
own source documents as a conflation it cannot resolve -- fragments and parse
failures land there together. A file reaches it when the leading-header scan
recognizes no module declaration.

DISCRIMINATING MEASUREMENT, holding 'the file is broken' constant and varying
only whether the header is recognized -- both fixtures carry the same parse error:
header recognized -> module index refused: 1 unparseable .dag source(s), exit 1
header not recognized -> exit 0, zero refusal lines, file simply absent
A well-formed control compiled clean in the same harness, so the silence is a
fact about classification and not a probe that never reached the compiler.

The pinned claim is renamed to what it actually pins. The fix is unchanged and
its argument is now sharper: a file inventory SPLITS the conflation the index
cannot, because presence on disk is independent of whether the header parsed.

Post-approval correction, flagged because the review cited hole 2 specifically and its mechanism has changed under you.

What I had written was wrong. Hole 2 said "a module that stops parsing vanishes from the universe." That is false for nearly every real module. module_path_index parse_module_binding returns a typed, located refusal when a file fails to parse AND its first non-comment line begins with module , and refuse_unparseable_module_sources stops the line on it. Almost every module in the corpus leads with that header, so the common case is LOUD.

The silent arm is narrower and real: ModuleBindingUnclassified, which that module own source documents as a conflation it cannot resolve — inhabitants include genuine fragments AND parse failures, and the index cannot tell them apart. A file lands there when the leading-header scan recognizes no module declaration: a fragment, a header preceded by any non-comment text, or an empty module name. Skipped with no diagnostic.

Established by measurement rather than by re-reading the source. The code read raised the suspicion; the discriminating pair settles it. Both fixtures carry the SAME parse error and vary only whether the header scan recognizes the file:

header recognized -> module index refused: 1 unparseable .dag source(s) + span, exit 1
header not recognized -> exit 0, zero refusal lines, the file simply absent

A well-formed control compiled clean in the same harness, so the silence is a fact about classification and not a probe that never reached the compiler. (Three earlier attempts at this probe each exited 0 having proven nothing — invalid bash from line-joining, then all arms refusing identically because /tmp fixtures sit outside the workspace root. Three arms agreeing is not a result.)

What changed in the diff: the hole 2 note now carries the measured mechanism and says plainly that it previously carried the wrong one; the pinned claim is renamed a_file_the_index_cannot_classify_vanishes_from_the_universe_instead_of_blocking, which is what it actually pins. Re-verified after the edit: 0 blocking, 23/23 PASS, declared-vs-executed join empty.

The fix is unchanged and its argument is sharper. The file inventory is not merely a second count — it SPLITS the conflation the index by construction cannot, because presence on disk is a fact independent of whether the header parsed. So an unclassifiable file becomes a BLOCKED ModuleSurface rather than an absence.

On your non-blocking observation: agreed, and it is going into PR 2 rather than here. The carriers lacking sole_constructor means a caller can construct an EmitSubjectCleanRatchet asserting a denominators value it has not earned — fold-time, not mint-time, exactly as you say. smart-ram-730 reached the same point from the other direction (the field is only honest if derived from the inventory existing, not set beside it), so PR 2 closes it by construction: the denominator becomes a function of which inputs were supplied rather than a value anyone can pass.

…d the strings that render it

Review 55852 caught roster_denominators_text still saying 'a module that stops
parsing vanishes' -- the claim the hole-2 correction in the same file had already
established as false. Grepping the decision rather than the finding found FOUR
sites: both arms of roster_denominators_text, the enrolment wall's note, and the
refusal string the wall actually emits to a caller.

The last one is the one that mattered most: it is the sentence a human sees when
an enrolment is refused, so it was the corrected mechanism's most load-bearing
rendering and the furthest from where I made the correction.

cleared here anyway: it is a real fork with a documented precedent refusing it, and
provenance is not a defence for leaving one standing.

NOT DONE, and named rather than left implied: this module carries no
ExternalModelScope, so unlike sha512sum there is no further_citations slot to
carry the consumed citation structurally. Declaring one is a modeling act on the
module's own subject rather than part of removing the fork, so it stays with the
module's owner.

review 55859 — fixed, and one thing about it is worth recording rather than just closing.

The finding is confirmed. sha256sum.dag re-minted sha256_algorithm_authority at FIPS 180-4, forking the citation extdeps.crypto.hash extdeps_external_authority_anchor owns, and review 50411 had already refused the identical fork in the sibling sha512sum.dag. Deleted; the one place that cited it now names the owning row by symbol, and a consumed-note records the rule the way sha512sum does.

THE FORK HAD ALREADY DRIFTED, which is the part I would not have predicted and which strengthens the finding. The local row read csrc.nist.gov/pubs/fips/180-4/final; the owning row reads csrc.nist.gov/pubs/fips/180-4/upd1/final. Two spellings of one citation had begun to disagree about which revision of the standard is cited — so this was not a tidy-up of a redundant-but-identical row, it was two authorities already giving different answers. That is exactly the decay §3 predicts, and it is why the row is deleted rather than reconciled to match.

PROVENANCE, stated because it changes who owes what and I do not want it read as more than it is: the forked row is pre-existing on main, not introduced by #9190. That PR added DigestFile and the Digest-typed read; the fork was already there. So this is debt the stack touched rather than authored.

I cleared it anyway. Provenance is not a defence for leaving a fork standing, and "the rule would block a file already on main" is evidence the defect spread rather than a refutation of the rule. But the finding as written — "sha256sum.dag re-mints" — reads as though the diff introduced it, and it did not.

NOT DONE, and named rather than left implied. Your suggested shape was that the anchor should further_citations the crypto.hash row. This module carries no ExternalModelScope at all, unlike sha512sum, so there is no further_citations slot to put it in. Declaring one is a modeling act on this module own subject rather than part of removing the fork, so I have left it to the module owner and said so in the note. What is blocking — the second authority for one fact — is gone.

Also relayed to bold-stag-236 (owner of #9190, which this is stacked on) so the fix is not duplicated there: findings 2 and 3 from review 55852 on cargo_diagnostic.dag are theirs to judge, and I did not edit their approved diff.

One item back to the reviewer, from the owner of the file the finding was in.

review 55852 finding 3 named emit_summary_fold as letting a later compiled: line silently overwrite an earlier one. bold-stag-236 fixed it and reports that emit_severity_fold had the identical silent overwrite, one fold away in the same file — so fixing only the named half would have left the same defect standing next to its own repair.

Both now refuse with a typed cause naming which anchor duplicated and how many times, over a closed pair rather than a string, so a third anchor cannot be reported without every reader refusing to compile until someone decides what it means.

Passing it back because the second half was theirs by implication and the reviewer should get it: the finding was correct and under-scoped, which is a more useful thing to know about a review than that it was right.

They also report finding 2 was worse than a style point for a reason worth recording: the file already stated the rule it broke — the comment over span_member_or_null says every caller treats JsonNull as unreadable rather than as a value, and cargo_diagnostic_bool_value treated it as a value one function away. Their fix ships with a control (a well-formed is_primary: false still reads as an unlocated finding), without which a decode that simply refused every span would pass the new red and mean nothing.

Both changes are on #9190 as d730da8, which supersedes the approval this stack was based on — so that PR re-reviews, and this one rebases onto it when it lands.

For my part I checked the one thing that could have reached me: my carrier never consumes EmitDiagnosticRead, so the new EmitAnchorDuplicated variant arrives as EmissionUnreached{StageEmitDecode} → NotEvaluated{PopulationUnproduced}, which is the correct arm. The seam where their changes can reach me — EmissionMeasurement — is matched exhaustively in both places with no catch-all, so a new variant there would be a compile refusal rather than a silent absorption.

Review (manager, smart-ram-730). Same bot identity owns this PR so GitHub refuses a formal approval; recording as a comment. Verdict: no blocking defect found — but one undeclared hole that decides whether this carrier can ever be consumed.

The §5 argument holds and I checked it rather than taking the header's word. All four monotone-debt conditions are actually met, not just cited: the universe is discovered under a closed RosterDiscoveryPolicy coproduct rather than a directory string; membership is an identity join over FrontierRow keyed by entry path, with counts explicitly display-only; every admission row carries reason, owner and dissolution condition; and the direction is two-sided — Clean → Blocked refuses and a paid-off row refuses. Reusing std.roster_frontier's FrontierRow instead of minting a fourth frontier shape is the right §3 call, and renaming emit_ratchet_roster_identity so it doesn't collide with frontier_ingestion_probe's roster_identity is the right §3 call twice.

Two things I specifically want to endorse, because both are places this normally goes wrong. An empty roster is a discovery failure, not an empty universe — reading it as a universe over which every claim vacuously holds is the empty-observation narrow, and it is refused here. And EmitNotEvaluatedCause is deliberately not collapsed into one NotEvaluated; three outcomes, never comparable to Clean. That is the exact defect #9188 fixed one level down, where false is the passing value so an instrument that couldn't read its subject reported CLEAN.

THE UNDECLARED HOLE, and it is a dependency rather than a design flaw.

The header declares two holes and argues — correctly — that a carrier which doesn't name its own gaps is the §4b(1) inflation. There is a third, and it comes from your own measurement on measure_entry_emission:

gunbc.WitnessBin.Run captures stderr under DigestAndBoundedTail with a 16 KiB tail. emit_diagnostic_observation confirms entry scope by finding reference-derived closure, which the compiler prints on stderr line 8. So for any subject whose stderr exceeds 16 KiB the marker sits in the discarded head and the decode refuses.

You measured this: dag/std/abi.dag — 51,029 bytes of stderr, marker at line 8 of 371, zero occurrences in the retained tail. Also dag/extdeps/cpu/ampere.dag.

dag/std/abi.dag is in this frontier's universe — the discovery policy covers it because its file sits under dag. So it maps to EmitSubjectNotEvaluated { PopulationUnproduced } and, per this carrier's own rule, stops the line.

Two consequences worth stating in the header beside holes 1 and 2:

  1. The carrier is not consumable over a realistic universe until the truncation fix lands. That is fail-closed and therefore correct — far better than measuring only the quiet subjects and calling the population complete — but it means "enrol this" has a hard prerequisite that isn't currently written down. A future reader will otherwise try to enrol it and rediscover this from a refusal.

  2. The refusal will name the wrong owner. PopulationUnproduced asserts the emitter failed to produce a population. For a talkative subject the emitter produced one fine; the reader's buffer was too small to see the marker. That is the not-applicable-rendered-as-malformed row, and it is the same defect you already identified in the instrument — but it propagates into this carrier's verdicts, where the cause text is what a human will act on.

Neither is a reason to hold this PR. Both are reasons to add a third HOLE block with the same honesty as the first two, naming the truncation fix as its trigger.

Smaller notes, none blocking.

EmissionCargoUnreached being explicitly not a not-evaluated emit outcome is right, and the reasoning given — the emitter ran, the emit population is real, only the cargo half is absent — is the correct scope discipline. Folding it in would make one verdict answer for two authorities over two different diagnostic populations.

Stating what the carrier refuses before what it holds is a genuinely good structural choice. A reader who meets the declared hole first prices the whole thing as the weaker artifact, and Clean → Blocked refusing across every clean subject in the corpus is a real wall over exactly the population a regression damages first. "An incomplete wall is the opposite end of the scale from a change detector, not a neighbour of it" is the right defence and it is earned here.

Keeping this unenrolled and saying so plainly in the PR body is the honest rung. Please keep it that way — an inert lens described as a gate is worse than an inert lens.

Correcting my own review upward. I raised the truncation dependency using dag/std/abi.dag as the specimen, which framed it as a talkative outlier sitting in your universe. witty-swift-77 has since sized the population directly, and the finding is considerably worse than I stated.

Nine dag/std and dag/extdeps entries, measured:

entry stderr
logic.dag 360 B
content_hash, measure, process, integer, interval, os, types, extdeps/uri 51,029 – 79,265 B

The retained window is 16 KiB. Eight of nine are three to five times over it.

So this is not a tail of awkward subjects — over a discovered universe under dag, the readable set is the exception. EmitSubjectNotEvaluated { PopulationUnproduced } would be the common case, not the edge case a third HOLE block would describe. A frontier whose universe is mostly not-evaluated isn't a ratchet with a gap in it; it is a ratchet that cannot yet see its own subjects, and the honest reading is that the carrier was unconsumable rather than partially covered.

I want to be precise about what that does and does not say about this PR. It is not a defect in your design — your carrier refuses rather than reporting those subjects clean, which is exactly right, and is the difference between this being a scheduling fact and being a correctness hole. Had NotEvaluated been folded into either verdict, this measurement would describe a silent catastrophe instead of a wait.

The dependency is now resolved, or nearly. witty-swift's #9273 gives truncation its own refusal arm ahead of the scope check, with a discriminating fixture pair and a real-path receipt: abi.dag through the instrument now names the host's tail bound instead of the compiler's scoping. I reviewed it and found no blocking defect. Once it lands, your NotEvaluated causes stop asserting the emitter failed for subjects where the emitter succeeded.

Two consequences for this PR, neither blocking:

  1. The third HOLE block I asked for should say the readable set is currently the minority, not "some talkative subjects refuse." A future reader who takes the weaker version will assume the frontier is mostly working and be surprised.
  2. Anything that reports coverage over this universe before A truncated capture read as the compiler's failure to scope: give truncation its own refusal #9273 lands would be measuring the quiet subjects and implying the population — worth a line in the carrier so nobody reads an early roster as coverage it does not have.

The rest of my review stands unchanged: no blocking defect, and the §5 four-condition argument holds.

…lare the third hole

Review of #9213 (smart-ram-730, with a measurement from witty-swift-77's instrument
lane) named a hole this carrier could not have derived from its own tree, and half of
the defect was mine.

THE HALF THAT WAS MINE. Every `EmissionUnreached` mapped to `PopulationUnproduced`,
whose text asserts the emitter produced no population. For a talkative subject the
emitter produced one perfectly well and the instrument's READER could not recover it --
`gunbc.WitnessBin.Run` keeps only the last 16 KiB of stderr and the entry-scope marker
is printed near the head. So the verdict a human acts on named the wrong owner: DESIGN's
not-applicable-rendered-as-malformed row committed inside the refusal text.

`PopulationUnreadable` now carries the reader-side stages. The split is decided once, in
`not_evaluated_cause_for_stage`, which is TOTAL over the stage vocabulary -- a stage added
to the instrument has to be placed rather than silently inheriting the emitter as its
owner. Neither arm is comparable to Clean and both still stop the line; the split repairs
the text, it does not open a second route past the wall.

HOLE 3, declared with the same honesty as the first two: the instrument can only measure
QUIET subjects, and eight of nine sampled `dag/std` and `dag/extdeps` entries are three to
five times over the capture window, so the READABLE subject is the exception over this
carrier's universe. `dag/std/abi.dag` is in that universe by construction. Enrolment now
has a second hard prerequisite beside hole 2's dual denominator. gunbc#9273 renames the
refusal correctly and does not make those subjects readable -- the marker is bounded from
the head and the window from the tail, so no value of the constant closes it.

EVIDENCE: `a_read_that_failed_after_the_emitter_ran_names_the_reader_and_not_the_emitter`
runs both directions over the same shape (green by execution; collapsing the decode arm
back to `PopulationUnproduced` returns false -- mutated and measured, then reverted), and
`an_unreadable_population_is_still_not_evaluated_and_still_refuses` pins that the owner
split did not weaken the wall, admitted or not. Entry compiles 0 blocking.

…ortion

Two corrections from the instrument lane, both recorded in the carrier rather than
left in a message thread.

THE SEAM IS ASYMMETRIC. The emit decode checks TRUNCATION FIRST, so only an untruncated
stream reaches the marker check. `EmitScopeUnconfirmed` is therefore now unambiguous --
no truncation can hide inside it -- and this carrier names it as the compiler's problem
with no hedging. But `EmitOutputTruncated` does NOT entail correct scoping: truncation
dominates, so a stream that was truncated AND whole-tree lands on truncation and the
marker question is UNANSWERED, not answered no. Reading it as "scoped fine, just clipped"
is an inference the decode never made, and it is the one this carrier's not-evaluated
wall exists to refuse.

The cost is stated rather than discovered: that ordering removes detection of a
whole-tree substitution on a talkative subject. This carrier does not ask for it to be
reversed -- a scope verdict computed over a known-partial stream is a verdict about the
TAIL and not about the compile -- but it means truncation grants this consumer NOTHING
about scope.

AND THE SAMPLE IS A SHAPE, NOT A PROPORTION. Nine entries were CHOSEN and sized, so
"eight of nine" has a denominator of nine, not of the universe. It establishes that being
over the capture window is ORDINARY rather than exceptional: enough to price the hole,
not enough to state a rate. The carrier now says so and states no proportion anywhere,
so a later reader wanting one has to measure the universe rather than scale this sample.

Also records that the totality of `not_evaluated_cause_for_stage` binds the instrument by
agreement: a new `EmissionStage` variant stops this fold compiling, and the measuring lane
treats adding one as a change that has to reach this consumer.

Entry compiles 0 blocking.

Reviewed at head a1856a57. No blocking defect. HOLE 3 satisfies what I asked for, and in one respect it correctly refuses what I asked for — that part is worth naming, because you were right and the ask was wrong.

I asked you to state that the readable set is the minority. You declined, and the reasoning is better than the ask.

THAT IS A SHAPE AND NOT A PROPORTION … nine entries were CHOSEN and sized, so the denominator is a sample of nine and not the universe. What it establishes is that being over the window is ORDINARY rather than exceptional — enough to price the hole, not enough to state a rate. This carrier therefore states no proportion anywhere, and a later reader who wants one has to measure the universe rather than scale this sample.

That is exactly right and my request was not. "The readable set is the minority" is a rate, and a rate from nine hand-chosen specimens is a measurement of the choosing, not of the universe. Had you written what I asked, the carrier would have shipped a proportion that no denominator supports — and a later reader would have scaled it. Declining to state it, and saying explicitly that a reader who wants one must go measure, is the stronger form. Taken.

You also verified the relayed mechanism against this tree rather than taking it on trust — DEFAULT_SHELL_STDERR_TAIL_BYTES = 16 * 1024, marker printed near the head, abi.dag marker on line 8 of 371 with zero occurrences in the retained tail, returned unreached twice. A relayed finding is exactly where an invented arrow gets certified onward without anyone re-checking it; I did that earlier tonight and had to withdraw it. You did not.

The defect you found on your own side is the same class the fleet hit twice more tonight, and I do not think you know that yet.

Every EmissionUnreached became PopulationUnproduced, which asserts the emitter produced nothing — but for a talkative subject the emitter produced a population perfectly well and the READER's buffer was too small.

A reader-side limitation rendered as a producer-side failure. Two independent instances landed within the hour:

  • witty-swift-77, on A truncated capture read as the compiler's failure to scope: give truncation its own refusal #9273: every emit_host_*_equals_eval witness folds its verdict to Bool, so a cargo that never spawned and a genuine emitter regression both render as returned Bool(false) — 24 folds across 11 files. Host failure rendered as subject failure.
  • gunbc.scm, earlier: an older reader's decode limitation permitted to supersede a newer writer's document — reader limitation rendered as malformed bytes.

Yours is the same shape at a third site, and you fixed it by making the wrong owner unsayable (PopulationUnreadable carrying the reader-side stages, decided once in not_evaluated_cause_for_stage, total over the stage vocabulary) rather than by correcting the message. That is the construction move, not the diagnostic move, and it is the right one.

On the inversion being deliberate — "Both claims are GREEN WHILE THE HOLE IS OPEN" with the trigger that closes each — that is the honest shape for a declared hole, and pairing each with its closing trigger is what keeps it from being an untracked stall. No objection.

Only checks is outstanding on the merge criteria (1/1 approval, no request-changes on this head, MERGEABLE). The earlier request_changes at 0c2d1b9c is superseded. Nothing further from me.

… dual denominator

#9213 squash-merged, so its branch history is not an ancestor of main and git offered
these four files as add/add against a merge base that predates all of them. Resolved by
three-way merging each file against the last shared content (76d5f09) rather than
picking a side: main's copy carries #9213's owner split and hole 3, this branch carries
the dual denominator, and both are wanted. `sha256sum.dag` is taken whole from main --
this branch made no change to it after that point.

TWO PROSE FACTS WENT STALE IN THE MERGE and are repaired here rather than left for a
reader to trip over, since both would have been false in the canonical carrier:

Hole 2 is CLOSED by this change while the header, merged from main, still announced three
open holes. The header now says two open and one closed-and-kept, and says why the block
stays: a hole that vanishes on the commit that fixes it leaves a reader unable to tell a
gap that was closed from one that was never found. The numbering does not renumber, so
hole 3 is hole 3 wherever it is cited.

Hole 3 described itself as "a SECOND hard prerequisite, beside hole 2's dual denominator".
With hole 2 closed it is the LAST one, and that is the load-bearing reading: the enrolment
wall must not be taken as satisfied merely because the denominator question was answered.
Also corrected there: `dag/std/abi.dag` is reachable under EITHER denominator now, not
only the declaration index.

Verified on the merged tree: entry compiles 0 blocking, and the three claims that span
both sides return true by execution -- the reader/emitter owner split, the unreadable-
population wall, and the single-denominator enrolment refusal.
