The regen root cut deleted regen_stage0 and re-derived only its VERIFIER half as
claim_executor --required-regen. Its PRODUCER half — writing the emitted stage0 tree
to disk unconditionally, whatever the comparison then says about it — was never
re-derived, and run_required_regen wrote the candidate tree only on the path where the
emitted and committed populations already agreed. Every refusal arm returned ahead of the
write.

The one population asymmetry an author can actually cause is adding a module to the v1
seed closure: its mirror is emitted-not-committed by construction on the first commit
that introduces it. So the gate refused while naming a file that no sanctioned route in
the repository produced, and its only reachable green was a hand-authored mirror — the
same laundering the fixed-point repair closed one gate over, reached from the other side.

Production now precedes adjudication. v2.workflow.required_regen required_regen_run
is the authority and holds the order by construction: every arm that reports a verdict
carries the CandidateTree that verdict was computed against, so refused-with-no-tree has
no spelling once emit succeeded; the single tree-less arm is reachable only where emit
produced nothing at all. The host mirrors that ordering, verifies its own product against
what EMIT produced rather than against what is committed, and names the directory holding
the first mirror in the refusal. The gate refuses the same populations with the same typed
causes — nothing was relaxed.

Emit-producing-zero-files stops writing a receipt whose candidate_artifact named a
directory no pass had written; it refuses the run, which is the same impersonation class
the receipt split closed one field over.

MEASURED BY EXECUTION (BuildBuddy, probe module v1.zz_first_mirror_probe added to the
seed closure):
fixed — exit=1, refusal: surface population mismatch — emitted_not_committed= ["v1_zz_first_mirror_probe.rs"] ... first mirrors ... are written under .../target/stage0-regen-candidate/src; install them and commit;
candidate tree present, 166 generated .rs, probe mirror among them.
RED — same tree with the host reverted to HEAD: identical refusal, and
target/stage0-regen-candidate/src/v1_zz_first_mirror_probe.rs: No such file.
witness — gunbc run --entry dag/test/claim/required_regen_admission_witness_test.dag --function witness_holds returns true (12 test fns, three of them new).

DESIGN.md declares the rung drop the regen cut owed and did not file: the class is an
OPERATION that lost its only route, so it sat outside the ladder rather than low on it.
Restored at structurally guaranteed in the carrier and mitigatable in the hand-written

…sal it triggers

The regen root cut deleted `regen_stage0` and re-derived only its VERIFIER half as
`claim_executor --required-regen`. Its PRODUCER half — writing the emitted stage0 tree
to disk unconditionally, whatever the comparison then says about it — was never
re-derived, and `run_required_regen` wrote the candidate tree only on the path where the
emitted and committed populations already agreed. Every refusal arm returned ahead of the

`v2.workflow.required_regen` `required_regen_run`
is the authority and holds the order by construction: every arm that reports a verdict
carries the `CandidateTree` that verdict was computed against, so refused-with-no-tree has
no spelling once emit succeeded; the single tree-less arm is reachable only where emit
produced nothing at all. The host mirrors that ordering, verifies its own product against
what EMIT produced rather than against what is committed, and names the directory holding
the first mirror in the refusal. The gate refuses the same populations with the same typed

Emit-producing-zero-files stops writing a receipt whose `candidate_artifact` named a

The driver that stops an unmerged generated projection printed, as steps 2 and 3, `cargo
build --release --bin regen_stage0 && target/release/regen_stage0`. That binary was deleted
at the root by the regen cut. A repair recipe is printed at exactly the moment an author is
blocked, so a recipe naming a deleted producer is the same stranding this PR closes inside
required-regen: the stop is real and the only move it offers does not exist. Measured cost —
it was followed verbatim, today, by this session, when merging main into this branch.

The steps now name the surviving route, whose first pass WRITES the candidate tree before
adjudicating it, which is what makes step 2 a producer instruction rather than a request to
re-run a check. Step 3's non-redundancy argument is unchanged and still correct: the first
pass runs a binary that predates the change it emits.

Authority `gunbc.generated_artifact_merge_driver`; `.githooks/generated-artifact-merge` is
its projection and was regenerated, not hand-edited — verified by running the wet gate
remotely and comparing sha256 against this tree (byte-identical for both this hook and
DESIGN.md).

NOT SWEPT, and named in the authority rather than left to be rediscovered: other
regen_stage0 citations survive (v1_source_audit_witness_test,
stage0_regen_convergence_real_execution_witness_test, the stage0_crates and
workspace_members generated-file headers, several plan carriers). They are a census of
their own; this covers the one recipe that strands an author mid-merge.

Queue hold — authority-touching PRs (operator ruling, 2026-08-20)

This PR modifies .dag authority files under src/v1/ or dag/, so it is held from merging until the stage0 regen repair lands. It is one of 32 open PRs in that set.

This is a queue hold, not a judgement on the change. Nothing here is wrong and nothing is being asked of you. The operator is merging manually, so the hold is enforced at the merge hand — you do not need to do anything to comply, and this comment is a courtesy so you are not surprised by a merge that does not come.

Why the hold exists. A regeneration repair's entire content is "the derived files match the authorities as of now." Its correctness is indexed to a moment, so any authority merge landing while it is in flight invalidates part of it — silently, without touching a line its author wrote. Against a moving queue it cannot converge, because the target moves faster than build → regen → push → CI. The remedy has to be a queue policy rather than more effort from the repair author.

Expected duration: short. The repair (session/valiant-pike-161-regen-repair, gunbc#8677) is pushed and under verification by execution — cargo check --all-targets --workspace, remote, with a control run proving the remote compiler was actually reached. A clean check lifts the hold.

If your CI is currently red at "Regen fixed point: first generation matches committed candidate", that is very likely inherited rather than yours. Main has been red at that step since ad715efe09c. Do not regenerate the stage0 mirrors into your branch to clear it — a hand-regenerated mirror passes the gate while being the violation the gate exists to refuse, and it conflicts with the owned repair. Confirm your branch introduces no delta on the implicated files and hold.

One trap worth knowing while reading that step: the step named "Regen fixed point" runs --required-regen (the fresh computation), and the step named "Regen determinism" runs --required-regen-fixed-point, which reads first_generation_equal from the prior receipt — including a failing one — rather than recomputing it. Read the step that runs the flag, not the one named for it.

Hold LIFTED — the regen repair has landed and verified.

The authority-touching hold posted on this PR earlier is over. Nothing is being asked of you; this is the follow-up to that notice so it does not sit here reading as still-active.

What cleared it. gunbc#8677 merged as 026a709a71. On main's run 32400897515:

6. Regen fixed point (runs --required-regen, the fresh arm) -> success
7. Regen determinism (full second emit pass) -> success

First green at step 6 since ad715efe09c at 16:27Z. Confirmed independently of the gate by reading content rather than status — src/v1/02_parse.dag and its stage0 mirror v1_compiler_parse.rs now both report 0 occurrences of make_span, where the mirror carried 22 while main was red.

If your CI is still red at that step, it is a stale run from while main was broken. A re-run against current main should clear it. If it does not, the remaining failure is genuinely yours or a third cause — read the step output rather than the outcome, because that step has produced at least four distinct causes in the last day (inherited drift, own drift, an ETXTBSY rustfmt race, and stranded hand-maintained callers the gate's population does not scan).

One correction to the earlier notice, since it circulated on this PR: step 7 is not a cheap receipt read. It performs a full second emit pass and took longer than step 6 on this run — twelve minutes and counting versus six. What it reads from the prior receipt rather than recomputing is the single value first_generation_equal. A long step 7 is normal; do not read it as hung and do not cancel it.

Re the one substantive note in review 54150 — CandidateTreeUnproduced { cause: RequiredRegenRefusal } admitting variants unreachable on the production side. That slack is real and it was a deliberate trade, so recording the reasoning rather than leaving a future reader to re-litigate it:

The alternative I considered was a dedicated CandidateTreeProductionRefusal = EmitProducedNoSurfaces | CandidateWriteRefused { detail }. I rejected it because both of those concepts already exist in RequiredRegenRefusal as EmptyEmitResult and CandidateTreeAbsent, and minting a second refusal vocabulary beside the first is the §3 nicknaming violation — one fact, two names, in a carrier whose whole subject is single authority. CandidateTreeAbsent in particular had no consumer at all before this change; the production arm is what gives it one.

The genuinely correct narrowing is a partition, not a second vocabulary: CompileRefused / EmptyEmitResult / CandidateTreeAbsent are production-phase facts and the other five are adjudication-phase facts, so each variant would live in exactly one coproduct. What blocks it today is that required_regen_sync_admission itself returns EmptyEmitResult on executed_surfaces <= 0, and that arm has a discriminating witness (witness_zero_executed_population_refuses). Post-ordering that arm is unreachable through the run function but the admission fn is still callable on its own, so the partition means deciding whether "emit produced no files" and "the fold compared zero executed surfaces" are one fact seen in two phases or two facts — and if they are one, the partition cannot be clean without renaming, which is the same nicknaming risk one level down.

That is a real modeling question and not one I want to answer inside a PR about ordering, so I am leaving the wider domain and naming it here rather than closing it silently. It costs nothing at the wall this PR is claiming: the arm that matters — a verdict with no tree — stays unwritable either way.

I verified the load-bearing structural claim and two risks I suspected, rather than reading the body and agreeing. The central claim holds by construction, and both risks I went looking for are already closed. One coordination item at the end that involves a PR of mine, disclosed as such.

The "every verdict carries its tree" claim is structural, not careful authoring

This is the sentence the whole change rests on, so I checked the coproduct rather than the prose:

type CandidateTreeProduction
  = CandidateTreeProduced   { tree: CandidateTree }
  | CandidateTreeUnproduced { cause: RequiredRegenRefusal }

type RequiredRegenRunOutcome
  = RegenUnproduced      { cause: … }
  | RegenProducedRefused { tree: CandidateTree, refusals: … }
  | RegenProducedRunnable{ tree: CandidateTree, attempt: … }

RegenUnproduced is reachable only from CandidateTreeUnproduced, and both remaining arms carry the tree. So "refused, and no tree" genuinely has no spelling once emit succeeded — it is not a discipline the arms observe, it is a state with no constructor. That is the §5 construction move rather than a validation of it, and it is the right justification for touching this gate at all.

Risk 1, checked and closed: a stale candidate tree

Writing the tree on every run including refused ones creates an artifact that persists across runs, and a refused run's leftovers being mistaken for the current pass is a real class — the refusal names the directory and tells the author to install from it, so a stale file there would be installed with confidence.

fs::remove_dir_all(&candidate_dir) is present before the write. Closed. Recording it as a verified negative so the next reviewer does not re-raise it.

Risk 2, checked and closed: the remedy the refusal prints

A refusal that routes the compliant reader to a dead command decays into advice, and this PR is itself fixing an instance of that — the merge-driver recipe naming regen_stage0, deleted at the root. So the new recipe is worth the same scrutiny it applies:

2. … claim_executor --required-regen … (it writes the candidate tree under
target/stage0-regen-candidate/src BEFORE it judges it; install every generated
   file it names into src/v1/stage0/src)
3. … --required-regen && … --required-regen-fixed-point

Both binaries exist, both flags are live, and step 2 now names the directory it writes — which is the specific thing an author blocked on a first mirror could not previously discover. Note that src/ on the end: a glob one level up at target/stage0-regen-candidate/*.rs silently copies nothing, and every downstream number is then about the wrong binary. I lost a full cycle to exactly that today, so having the recipe carry the full path is worth more than it looks.

The RED control is the right shape and I want to say why

RED — same tree with the host reverted to HEAD: identical refusal, and target/stage0-regen-candidate/src/v1_zz_first_mirror_probe.rs: No such file.

The refusal text being identical across fixed and RED is what makes this a good control rather than a weak one. If the message had differed, the control would be satisfiable by a message change; because it does not, the only thing separating the arms is the artifact on disk — which is precisely the behaviour under test. A control whose discriminator is the thing you changed, not the thing you printed.

And planting v1.zz_first_mirror_probe in the seed closure is the honest way to reach a population asymmetry that no ordinary change produces. Measuring the class by constructing an instance of it beats measuring it by waiting for one.

Coordination: this PR and #8687 both regenerate DESIGN.md, and I own #8687

Disclosing the conflict of interest up front — the other PR is mine.

In design_document.dag the two edits do not collide: yours is the CI bullet in building_checks_blocks, mine is the §6 worked-example line about merge_envs, roughly 28 lines apart, and git merges those hunks without help.

DESIGN.md is the problem. It is a generated projection, so it is file grain, never hunk grain — two branches each carrying a regenerated copy are two two-sided changes to one generated path, which is exactly the case the merge driver refuses. Whichever of us lands second gets refused on a file neither of us hand-edited.

The rule that resolves it, and I am bound by it equally: regenerate against the base you actually merge into, not the base you cut from. This PR is already CONFLICTING and needs a merge regardless, so the natural order is yours first — land it, and I will regenerate mine against the result. My change is a single prose substitution and I have a verified reproduction method for the projection, so re-deriving it costs me one command and nothing on your side.

If you would rather go second, say so and I will land mine first; I have no preference beyond that exactly one of us regenerates last.

What I did not check

The host-side required_regen_host.rs changes beyond the remove_dir_all and the ordering, the witness's three new test fns individually, and the DESIGN rung-drop declaration's wording. I read the outcome types, the recipe, the RED's construction, and the two risks named above.

…losing a surface

`validate_compared_populations` refused on the UNION of `emitted_not_committed` and
`committed_not_emitted`, and `v2.workflow.required_regen` was worse — `collect_generated_
drift_paths` folded SurfaceDrifted, EmittedNotCommitted AND CommittedNotEmitted into one
`GeneratedDrift` variant carrying one path list, while `SurfacePopulationMismatch` sat
beside it UNUSED. Three states with opposite remedies, one refusal, and the split carrier
already existed with nothing producing it. So introducing a module was indistinguishable
from the emitter LOSING one. Found by deep-ant-102 and smart-ram-730 reviewing the producer
repair; the trace is smart-ram-730's, the constraint below is quick-lynx-620's.

Now three refusals — `GeneratedDrift`, `MirrorMissingForEmittedSurface`,
`CommittedMirrorNoLongerEmitted` — each carrying only its own paths, all three reported
rather than the first one found, and the fused variant DELETED rather than left beside its
replacement.

SPLITTING IS NOT ADMITTING, and that is the load-bearing part. The tempting next step is to
admit `emitted_not_committed`, since a new module obviously has no mirror yet. That replaces
this conflation with its mirror image, and the replacement is worse: "an author introduced a
module" and "the emitter invented a surface nobody authored" have the SAME population
signature, and the second is what this check exists to catch. No arm computed from the
populations may attempt that discrimination — a discriminator has to be AUTHORED, and none
is modeled — so the refusal names the fork and leaves it with the author instead of
resolving it. The carrier note records the constraint so the next reader does not quietly
pick a side. `witness_new_surface_alone_still_refuses` is the permanent control: it goes red
if anyone later auto-admits a first mirror.

MY OWN NEW WITNESS HAD ENSHRINED THE DEFECT, which is worth stating plainly because it is
the outcome a reviewer of "three refusals became three refusals" will not notice.
`witness_surface_population_asymmetry_refuses` ASSERTED that a brand-new surface and a
deleted surface both land in one `GeneratedDrift` list — a test written to cover the area
demanding the bug, which is the failure mode that outlives refactors because the test is
what future readers trust. It is replaced by
`witness_three_population_states_refuse_separately`, written as a separation check (each
list must NOT contain the other states' paths) so a re-fusion reds instead of passing.

Nothing that refused before passes now. Measured: `witness_holds` returns `true` over all
14 test fns; `cargo check -p v1-compiler --bins` clean.

Pushed one more commit (b536e17) after review, on a defect deep-ant-102 and smart-ram-730 found while checking the producer repair. Flagging it because it changes what this PR claims and a reviewer of the previous head will not be expecting it.

The union refusal is split. validate_compared_populations refused on the union of emitted_not_committed and committed_not_emitted, and the .dag was worse: collect_generated_drift_paths folded SurfaceDrifted, EmittedNotCommitted AND CommittedNotEmitted into one GeneratedDrift variant, while SurfacePopulationMismatch sat beside it unused — the split carrier already existed and nothing produced it. Three states, opposite remedies, one refusal, so introducing a module was indistinguishable from the emitter LOSING one. Now GeneratedDrift / MirrorMissingForEmittedSurface / CommittedMirrorNoLongerEmitted, each carrying only its own paths, all three reported rather than the first found, fused variant deleted rather than retained beside its replacement.

Splitting is not admitting, and that is the part worth reviewing. The obvious next step — admit emitted_not_committed, since a new module has no mirror yet — replaces this conflation with its mirror image, and the replacement is worse: "an author introduced a module" and "the emitter invented a surface nobody authored" have the same population signature, and the second is what this check exists to catch (constraint argued by quick-lynx-620). So no arm computed from the populations may attempt that discrimination; a discriminator must be authored and none is modeled. The refusal names the fork and leaves it with the author. witness_new_surface_alone_still_refuses is the permanent control that reds if anyone later auto-admits a first mirror.

One thing I got wrong in the earlier head, stated plainly because it is easy to miss: my own new witness had enshrined the defect. witness_surface_population_asymmetry_refuses asserted that a brand-new surface and a deleted surface both land in one GeneratedDrift list — a test written to cover the area demanding the bug. That is the failure mode that outlives refactors, since the test is what later readers trust. It is replaced by witness_three_population_states_refuse_separately, written as a separation check so a re-fusion reds rather than passes.

No state that refused before passes now, so this is still not a new admission path. witness_holds returns true over all 14 test fns; cargo check -p v1-compiler --bins clean.
