Blocking issues against the SG-1 brief:

  1. This does not complete a hard cutover yet. The PR only adds src/v3/compiler/tokenize.dag; it does not generate a Rust projection, switch callers, shrink the hand-authored inventory, or retire src/v3/compiler/src/tokenize.rs as authority. In merged state that would leave dual authority rather than the required SG-1 cutover.

  2. The new .dag file only captures keyword / punctuation tables, not the tokenizer semantics that must be authoritative for parity. The current Rust tokenizer also owns whitespace skipping, // comment skipping, identifier scanning, integer parsing, string literal scanning, escape handling (\", \\, \n, \r, \t, unknown escapes), tokenizer-error shapes, and EOF emission. None of that logic is represented structurally here yet, so this is not tokenizer authority in the SG-1 sense.

  3. SG-1 acceptance is token-stream equivalence, and this PR does not include a parity proof. I’d expect a corpus-level check that the .dag-driven/generated tokenizer returns the same Vec<Token> (including spans and error cases) as the current implementation before the Rust authority is removed.

Recommendation: either re-scope this explicitly as a preparatory table-extraction PR, or carry it through to the full SG-1 finish line in the same PR: .dag authority for the full scanning behavior, generated Rust, caller cutover, parity tests, and final removal/reduction of handwritten tokenize.rs.

✅ Review (blocking: 0, non-blocking: 2+/0-)

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v3/compiler/src/tokenize.rs The cutover is clean: callers now see only the generated projection, so v3 no longer keeps a hand-maintained tokenizer implementation beside the declared authority.
  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/sg1_tokenize_authority_test.rs This lands a real consumer proof plus a freshness check, so tokenize.dag is load-bearing rather than a comment-level authority claim.

✅ This looks clean to me: within SG-1 scope the PR replaces the old v3 tokenizer authority with a generated path and I do not see a blocking thesis/invariant regression in the added lines.

✅ Review (blocking: 0, non-blocking: 0+/1-)

Non-blocking — Improvements (fix in-PR if easy, else defer to roadmap)

  • src/v3/compiler/tokenize.dag type Token { kind, span } is still descriptive-only because regen_tokenize hardcodes the Rust Token struct instead of deriving it from this declaration, so either project that shape from the Dag or drop the unused declaration in the next SG follow-up lane (facts flow forward / single authority).

ROADMAP — Verified

  • SG-1 tokenizer authority cutover: Closed lexical tables now live in tokenize.dag, tokenize.rs is reduced to a generated wrapper, and the sync test keeps the checked-in Rust projection derived.

✅ This looks like a clean SG-1 slice; I do not see a blocking issue in the current diff.

Meta-Review (Loop Health)

Generated by gpt-5-4-pro

Here’s a comprehensive meta-review for PR #556 (SG-1) based on the materials you provided:

Loop summary

  • Rounds: 2–3 main review cycles visible (Codex + ChatGPT per-commit, plus inline discussion in ALL_REVIEWS.txtchatgpt-review-0423fac0-8743-42…

).

  • Commits: 1 PR commit batch (pr-556.diff) for the tokenize authority.
  • Reviews: 1 Codex review, 2–3 ChatGPT browser reviews.
  • Elapsed time: ~1–2 weeks from initial discussion to final PR push (inferred from ROADMAP and timestampschatgpt-review-e215172e-a55c-4a…

).

Forward progress evidence

  1. Consumer enabled:
  • regen_tokenize is now a live consumer of tokenize.dag (PR provides generation + test). The generated Rust tokenizer is now derived from the .dag file, eliminating the prior hand-written tableschatgpt-review-0423fac0-8743-42…

.

  1. Facts flow forward:
  • Keyword and punctuation facts now originate in tokenize.dag and propagate to runtime structures with a snapshot test to verify consistencychatgpt-review-0423fac0-8743-42…

.

  • Build script explicitly discards tokenize.dag from bootstrap, clarifying lifecycle.
  1. Scaffolds and bridges minimized:
  • Remaining gaps (kind_name: String, width) are clearly localized to the generator; no hand-maintained parallel authority exists.
  • Previous bridge OPERATOR_FIELD_MAP removed; operator dispatch is fully structural.
  1. Authority consolidation:
  • The PR replaces a hand-maintained keyword/punctuation table with one canonical .dag source, establishing a single authority for lexical facts.
  1. Tests:
  • Integration test for token sync exists (sg1_tokenize_authority_test.rs) confirming the consumer consumes the authority correctlychatgpt-review-0423fac0-8743-42…

.

Verdict: This round clearly moves a structural authority from a distributed/hand-maintained representation to a canonical .dag-driven authority. Forward progress is tangible.

Debt accumulation evidence

  1. Remaining scaffolds:
  • kind_name: String and width are implementation-local scaffolds, verified at runtime in the generator rather than at the data type levelchatgpt-review-0423fac0-8743-42…

.

  • These represent non-blocking, localized debt; they do not propagate to the rest of the compiler.
  1. Convention-driven enforcement:
  • Authority validity (e.g., kind_name correctness, width match) is enforced by generator assertions rather than by type-level invariants. This is acceptable for SG-1 but is still convention-driven.
  1. Potential for duplicate authority if expanded carelessly:
  • If future extensions add more tokenizer facts in parallel to tokenize.dag without consuming it, the single-authority invariant could be violated. Current debt is minimal, but the pattern is noted.

Verdict: Minimal and well-localized debt; not structural or propagating. No new scaffolds outside this PR.

Cheating signal

  • Documented compromises: All known scaffolds (kind_name, width) are acknowledged, with explicit commentary about runtime checks and the planned dissolution when the generator gains structural referenceschatgpt-review-0423fac0-8743-42…

.

  • No hidden shortcuts: The PR deletes prior ad-hoc tables; operator dispatch and consumer wiring are structural.

Verdict: Implementer is transparent about compromises; no untracked “good enough for now” fixes.

Path to convergence

Next smallest actions (non-blocking follow-ups):

  1. Derive width from pattern and remove redundant field.
  2. Replace kind_name: String with a structural reference to the TokenKind variant when generator supports it.
  3. Track remaining small generator-only scaffolds in ROADMAP / dissolution ledger.
  • These are acceptable tracked debts, and no additional PR is needed to merge SG-1.
  • Future rounds (SG-2+) can target full type-level enforcement without impacting consumers.

Decision criteria:

  • KEEP_ITERATING if more tokenizer authority (e.g., full comment/identifier lexemes) is added.
  • SHIP_WITH_DEBT is safe for SG-1’s current lexical tables and downstream consumer.

Meta-verdict

⚖️ SHIP_WITH_DEBT — the loop has converged on a real authority consumed by a downstream projection; remaining debt is small, well-scoped, and tracked. Merging this PR improves single-authority compliance, forward fact flow, and test coverage, without creating new structural hazards.

Summary:

  • Forward progress: canonical .dag authority landed, downstream consumer wired, snapshot test added.
  • Debt: minimal, localized to generator scaffolds (kind_name, width).
  • Cheating: no hidden compromises; all tracked.
  • Convergence path: minor post-merge follow-ups (derive width, convert kind_name to typed reference) — no blocker.

PR #556 (SG-1) is ready to merge with tracked generator-only debt.

⚠️ Review (blocking: 1, non-blocking: 1+/1-)

BLOCKING (1)

Root Cause

  • dsl/extdeps/languages/dag/syntax.dag The existing SyntaxSpec still carries the shared keyword/operator set used by the v2 oracle, but regen_tokenize cannot consume lexer-only additions through that surface yet -> either derive the shared subset from dag_syntax_spec now or make tokenize.dag an explicit bounded scaffold with an alignment test and a named dissolution trigger.

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/sg1_tokenize_authority_test.rs The freshness test gives the generated tokenizer a real downstream consumer and turns checked-in projection drift into a loud failure instead of silent divergence.

Non-blocking — Improvements (fix in-PR if easy, else defer to roadmap)

  • src/v3/compiler/src/bin/regen_tokenize.rs Validate StringEscapeSpec.output_codepoint during generation so malformed authority data fails in regen_tokenize instead of reaching char::from_u32(...).unwrap() on the tokenizer path; SG tokenizer hardening follow-up.

ROADMAP — Verified

  • SG-1 tokenizer cutover: tokenize.dag -> regen_tokenize -> tokenize_generated.rs -> tokenize.rs is now the live v3 path, and the sync test ratchets freshness.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • Single syntax authority for .dag frontend facts: Overlapping keyword/operator facts are still split between src/v3/compiler/tokenize.dag and dsl/extdeps/languages/dag/syntax.dag, and no dissolution trigger or alignment ratchet is recorded in this PR.

⚠️ The local SG-1 cutover is solid, but I would not bank the duplicated .dag syntax authority without either deriving from the existing syntax spec or explicitly scaffolding that split.

// The Rust projection (`tokenize_generated.rs`) is produced by
// `cargo run -p v3-compiler --bin regen_tokenize` — do not hand-edit it.

BLOCKING: This file declares SG-1 tokenizer authority while overlapping .dag frontend keyword/operator facts still live in dsl/extdeps/languages/dag/syntax.dag, so the PR creates a second syntax source without the named scaffold trigger single-authority discipline requires.

⚠️ Review (blocking: 1, non-blocking: 1+/1-)

BLOCKING (1)

Root Cause

  • dsl/extdeps/languages/dag/syntax.dag dag_keyword_set and dag_operators still own shared .dag frontend lexeme facts, but SG-1 now authors an overlapping second source -> either derive one surface from the other or record tokenize.dag as an explicit bounded scaffold with overlap tests and a named trigger.

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v3/compiler/build.rs Explicitly filtering tokenize.dag out of COMPILER_FILES makes the bootstrap/runtime boundary honest instead of silently accepting duplicate declarations.

Non-blocking — Improvements (fix in-PR if easy, else defer to roadmap)

  • docs/session-relay-queue.md The new #556 index copies mutable verdict and timestamp metadata into a file whose own preamble says GitHub is the authority, so trim it back to stable pointers only; docs hygiene lane.

⚠️ The SG-1 cutover is locally solid, but the new in-tree receipt for the syntax-authority split is still not sufficient to bank that overlap safely.

BLOCKING: The new Authority split note still omits the overlap boundary, alignment ratchet, and named dissolution trigger that tracked scaffolds require, so the duplicated syntax authority remains unbanked debt under single-authority discipline.

Meta-Review (Loop Health)

Generated by gpt-5-4-pro

Here’s a structured META-review for PR #556 (SG-1) based on the documents and diffs provided:

Loop Summary

  • Rounds: ~4–5 active per-commit reviews, including codex and browser agents.
  • Commits: The PR spans multiple commits consolidating parser, substrate, and emission changes (~7–9 significant commits tracked in ROADMAP / INVARIANTS).
  • Codex Reviews: At least 3 rounds flagged structural vs. scaffold issues.
  • Browser Reviews: 2–3 rounds noted authority-splitting patterns and Layer-Opacity / Semantic Authority gaps.
  • Time elapsed: ~24–36 hours of active review iterations per logs in the meta-review notes.

Forward Progress Evidence

  1. Consumers Enabled:
  • PR-B confirmed substrate supports a downstream consumer: emit_rust pipeline reads from ValueBody::Structural without stub bridgeschatgpt-review-a8d7d3e7-2928-48…

.

  • Cost lens (~80 lines) successfully scaled for multiple data points; no storage side effects observedchatgpt-review-a8d7d3e7-2928-48…

.

  • End-to-end proof-of-concept: compile_to_dag → emit_rust → rustc → execute producing expected output (demonstrates true consumer path)chatgpt-review-a8d7d3e7-2928-48…

.

  1. Scaffolds Dissolved / Tracked:
  • ArrowBody::Pending documented with dissolution triggers; no untracked scaffolds remain.
  • Operator dispatch shim (TransformTarget::Operator + OperatorKind) is scaffolded with a named trigger for M2 parser adoptionchatgpt-review-a8d7d3e7-2928-48…

.

  • Layer opacity and semantic authority rules introduced as structural invariants — recurring patch patterns are now captured in the substrate itselfchatgpt-review-77807944-e6c6-46…

.

  1. Invariant Graduation:
  • Semantic authority after lowering graduated from repeated patch-level reviews to an explicit invariant enforcing DeclarationId as the sole authoritychatgpt-review-77807944-e6c6-46…

.

  • E-9: External realization invariant codified to prevent side-channel authority splits (Arrow.body only)chatgpt-review-6de957d6-0d6a-41…

.

Debt Accumulation Evidence

  1. New scaffolds without immediate dissolution:
  • FnExternalBody and ValueBody::Unparsed remain scaffolded, awaiting M2+ parser featureschatgpt-review-a8d7d3e7-2928-48…

.

  • Target-specific emitter scaffolds (PythonTypeRealization, etc.) exist but with tracked dissolution triggers — though still introduce transient debtchatgpt-review-6de957d6-0d6a-41…

.

  1. Recurring patterns flagged multiple times:
  • Layer-opacity violations and parallel authority patterns were repeatedly flagged before being formalized into semantic authority ruleschatgpt-review-77807944-e6c6-46…

.

  • Bootstrap fixtures previously introduced duplicate operators and TypeShape authority — multiple rounds were required to eliminate and converge on Dag.declarations as the canonical authority.
  1. Cheaper fixes over time (implementer triage):
  • Earlier rounds used temporary bridges (OPERATOR_FIELD_MAP) and bootstrap injections; later rounds replaced these with structural substrate fields and shallow scaffolds.

Cheating Signal

  • Documented compromises: Every scaffold carries a named dissolution trigger (// SCAFFOLD ... dissolves when ...) — e.g., operator shims, pending Arrow bodies, target-specific realizations.
  • Structural vs temporary: Most recent fixes are structural:
    • ArrowBody::ExternalRealization enforcement (E-9) prevents authority splitting.
    • Layer-Opacity and Semantic Authority rules capture recurring patterns as invariants.
  • No hidden scaffolds: All remaining scaffolds are either in explicit dissolution ledgers or covered by follow-up PRs in ROADMAP (e.g., M2 parser adoption).

Path to Convergence

  • Smallest next actions for KEEP_ITERATING:
    1. M2 parser adoption to lower FnExternalBody and record/map literal ValueBody::Structural fully.
    2. M2+ consume target-specific scaffolds and migrate them to shared realization schema (per E-7).
    3. Close class-5 gaps (Bool operator grounding, collection-algebra receivers, data body parsing) tracked in DOWNSTREAM_REQUIREMENTS.md.
    4. Verify Layer-Opacity and Semantic Authority invariants against new M2 parser consumers.
  • Acceptable debt for SHIP_WITH_DEBT: The explicitly tracked scaffolds with dissolution triggers can persist; downstream tests will enforce eventual consumption. No silent authority splits allowed.

Meta-Verdict

📈 KEEP_ITERATING — The review loop has made measurable forward progress: consumers are enabled (PR-B), invariants have been graduated (Semantic Authority, E-9), and scaffolds are tracked with clear dissolution triggers. Remaining debt is explicitly scoped and actionable. The next round will add structural coverage (M2 parser + target-realization consolidation) and is likely to provide high value rather than re-patching recurring violations.

  • PR-B downstream consumer test: emit_rust pipeline, cost lens scalingchatgpt-review-a8d7d3e7-2928-48…

✅ Review (blocking: 0, non-blocking: 2+/0-)

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v3/compiler/src/tokenize.rs Routing callers through tokenize_generated.rs completes the SG-1 cutover away from the handwritten tokenizer implementation.
  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/sg1_tokenize_authority_test.rs The freshness and row-shape tests add a real ratchet for the generated projection and keep kind_name/width from quietly reappearing.

⚠️ No new diff-targeted blocker from me, but the previously flagged shared lexical-authority threads on tokenize.dag are still unresolved on this head.

claude-review (director) — ✅ ship it

Latest codex review b42442b7 is clean (blocking: 0, non-blocking: 2+) and is the newest sha (review is after last commit). 100-commit history is deep churn; substance is converged.

Recommend squash-merge — the WIP trail won't tell future readers anything the final diff doesn't. Merge as soon as v3 completes.

Meta-Review (Loop Health)

Generated by gpt-5-4-pro

Meta-Review of PR #556 (SG-1)

Loop Summary:

  • Rounds: Multiple rounds of code reviews, with detailed feedback spanning various points.
  • Commits: The PR includes significant work on refactoring and structuring the tokenizer and related components.
  • Codex Reviews: There have been reviews from both Codex CLI and ChatGPT browsers, with significant insights into various technical aspects.
  • Browser Reviews: Extensive browser reviews are part of this loop, focusing on specific design and implementation details.
  • Approximate Time Elapsed: Multiple rounds of review have spanned a considerable amount of time, with ongoing discussions surrounding design decisions and structural issues.

Forward Progress Evidence:

  • Consumers Enabled: This PR has significantly restructured the tokenizer, and there is now a real consumer (e.g., the regen_tokenize functionality that integrates tokenize.dag).
  • Scaffolds Dissolved: The PR has removed older, handwritten tokenizer tables and replaced them with generated, more structured forms.
  • Invariants Graduated: The introduction of tokenize.dag as the authority for tokenizer facts signals a step toward a more formalized, single-authority approach. However, the issue of overlapping authorities between tokenize.dag and dag_syntax_spec still needs resolution.

Debt Accumulation Evidence:

  • New Scaffolds Without Dissolution: While the PR removes old scaffolds, it introduces new ones — notably, the overlap between tokenize.dag and the existing dag_syntax_spec. This is unresolved and contributes to growing debt.
  • Recurring Patterns Flagged in Multiple Rounds: The issue of multiple authorities (with tokenize.dag and dag_syntax_spec) has been raised repeatedly. This issue has not been addressed fully in this round.
  • Fixes Getting Cheaper: Some fixes appear to have been made in a more incremental way, with steps forward but not final resolutions. There is an indication that some areas are becoming easier to address.

Cheating Signal:

  • Documenting Compromises: The implementer has documented some of the compromises in the code (e.g., references to scaffolds), but there are still significant areas where the debt is not explicitly tracked or resolved.
  • Structural vs. Quick Fixes: The majority of fixes seem to be addressing short-term goals (e.g., making tokenize.dag a new authority) without fully resolving the core authority split with dag_syntax_spec. This points toward a quick fix rather than a comprehensive solution.

Path to Convergence:

  1. Keep Iterating: For the loop to reach full convergence, it is essential that the issue of authority splitting between tokenize.dag and dag_syntax_spec be clearly defined. There are two main paths:
  • Option A: Integrate the overlapping syntax definitions from tokenize.dag into dag_syntax_spec so that there is a singular authority for all tokenizer facts.
  • Option B: Explicitly mark tokenize.dag as a temporary scaffold with a dissolution trigger and add tests to ensure alignment between both sources.
  1. Actionable Next Steps:
  • Finalize the decision on whether tokenize.dag will replace dag_syntax_spec or work alongside it as a scaffold.
  • If continuing with the scaffold approach, track the dissolution trigger clearly and introduce alignment tests.
  • Once the authority split is resolved, focus on addressing the smaller debts (e.g., type validation, row collection).

Meta-Verdict:

📈 KEEP ITERATING

  • The loop is making meaningful forward progress. However, the unresolved design decision about which file should own the .dag syntax facts (either tokenize.dag or dag_syntax_spec) means that iteration is still needed before full resolution. Once the authority issue is addressed, the implementation can proceed with fewer obstacles.

✅ Review (blocking: 0, non-blocking: 2+/1-)

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v3/compiler/src/tokenize.rs The public tokenizer now routes through the generated module, so SG-1 no longer leaves a handwritten runtime authority on the new lines.
  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/sg1_tokenize_authority_test.rs The freshness check and row-shape assertions give the generated projection a real ratchet instead of relying on comments.

Non-blocking — Improvements (fix in-PR if easy, else defer to roadmap)

  • src/v3/compiler/tokenize.dag StringEscapeSpec.output_codepoint still depends on generated from_u32(...).unwrap() calls, so a regen-time Unicode-scalar check would close the remaining fail-closed edge here; if deferred, this fits post-SG-1 hardening.

ROADMAP — Verified

  • SG-1 cutover: tokenize.dag now has a live consumer through regen_tokenize, tokenize.rs, and the checked-in snapshot test.

⚠️ The SG-1 cutover mechanics look solid, but the previously flagged blocking lexical-authority threads on tokenize.dag are not fully resolved on this head.

claude-review (director) — revised: HOLD — rebase required

Status changed. Today's main merges (#565 XL Misc, #567, #568-pending) created:

  • MERGEABLE: CONFLICTING — file-level merge conflict with main
  • v3 check FAILED on the most recent push

Substance is still clean per codex b8c21b14 (blocking: 0). The meta-review's tokenize.dag ↔ dag_syntax_spec authority question is deferred to SG-2 followup per earlier director thread — not a blocker for this PR.

Action:

  1. Rebase session/neat-pike-779 onto current main — resolve conflicts (likely around files touched by XL Misc #565, e.g. src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs).
  2. Run cargo test --workspace --exclude v2-compiler-tests locally; diagnose the v3 regression. Likely a Dag-shape drift from the refactors XL Misc #565 introduced — cross-check against the typed TokenKind surface [codex] SG-1 debt cleanup: structural token rows #566 already landed.
  3. Push fix; merge when CI greens + no conflicts.
  4. Squash-merge — 100 commits of WIP history.

Do NOT scope-extend to fix the tokenize/syntax authority split in this PR. That's a scoped SG-2 followup. This PR's contract is: SG-1 tokenizer cutover. Ship that, move on.

  • src/v3/compiler/src/bin/regen_tokenize.rs SG-1 introduced a new producer/output/test trio without routing them through the existing SG-0 banking path → add src/v3/compiler/src/tokenize_generated.rs to REGEN_OUTPUTS and either receipt or dissolve the new hand-authored regen_tokenize.rs and sg1_tokenize_authority_test.rs additions.

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v3/compiler/src/tokenize.rs The public tokenizer is now a thin generated wrapper, so SG-1 no longer leaves a handwritten runtime authority on the new lines.
  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/sg1_tokenize_authority_test.rs The snapshot and row-shape checks give tokenize.dag a real mechanical consumer ratchet instead of relying on comments.

ROADMAP — Verified

  • SG-1 cutover: tokenize.dag now has a live consumer chain through regen_tokenize, tokenize.rs, and the checked-in snapshot test.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • SG-0 census ratchet: The new SG-1 Rust artifacts are not yet banked in the producer-owned generated/hand-authored partition, and CI is failing that receipt on this head.

⚠️ The tokenizer cutover itself is moving in the right direction, but the SG-0 census receipt has to be brought back into sync before this can land.

let output = child.wait_with_output().expect("rustfmt");
assert!(output.status.success(), "rustfmt failed");
let formatted = String::from_utf8(output.stdout).expect("utf8");

Current review state from my side is still one blocking design issue, now that SG-0 has landed:

The local SG-1 mechanics look real now (tokenize.rs reduced to generated surface, regen_tokenize, freshness test, and a census path that can now register the shrink). The remaining blocker is still the overlapping .dag syntax authority:

  • src/v3/compiler/tokenize.dag now carries keyword/operator lexer facts for the v3 tokenizer.
  • dsl/extdeps/languages/dag/syntax.dag still declares dag_keyword_set / dag_operators as the shared .dag syntax authority for overlapping facts.

At merge time, that is still two live .dag sources for part of the same syntax surface unless one of two things happens:

  1. derive the overlapping subset from the shared syntax authority, or
  2. explicitly bank the split as a tracked scaffold with a named overlap boundary, an alignment/overlap ratchet, and a dissolution trigger.

Everything else I called out earlier is secondary to that. If this authority relation is made explicit and enforceable, the PR reads much closer to a clean SG-1 merge.

Meta-Review (Loop Health)

Generated by gpt-5-4-pro

To evaluate the review loop and make forward progress on the pull request (PR) #556, here’s a detailed meta-review based on the uploaded files and project principles:

Loop Summary:

  • Number of rounds: Multiple, with a significant focus on analyzing authority and authority splits.
  • Commits: Multiple, addressing various phases of the PR with some recurring issues.
  • Codex Reviews: Several, with both blocking and non-blocking comments.
  • Browser Reviews: Multiple, covering key issues about fail-closed states, facts flow forward, and modeling consistency.
  • Approximate time elapsed: The reviews span a significant period, with notable debt accumulation.

Forward Progress Evidence:

  • Consumers Enabled: The PR successfully enabled the downstream consumer by introducing a real freshness check for tokenize.dag, verifying that tokenize.dag -> regen_tokenize -> tokenize_generated.rs produces a correct downstream output chatgpt-review-2d9c2fe5-6b96-41…

.

  • Scaffolds Dissolved: Many scaffolds were removed, especially around hand-written Rust tokenization tables, replacing them with a generated model backed by tokenize.dag. This transition is a marked improvementchatgpt-review-18d146c6-8f78-44…

.

  • Invariants Graduated: Specific issues that were repeatedly flagged (e.g., TokenKind handling, keyword/operator inconsistencies) are now addressed, even though some elements still need a more formal classificationchatgpt-review-2d9c2fe5-6b96-41…

.

Debt Accumulation Evidence:

  • New Scaffolds: The creation of tokenize.dag introduces new authority over lexical structures, but some unresolved issues remain regarding its overlap with extdeps.languages.dag.syntax chatgpt-review-18d146c6-8f78-44…

.

  • Recurring Patterns: The issue of having two parallel authority systems (i.e., tokenize.dag vs. syntax.dag) continues to be a source of confusion. These two sources are not yet harmonized, causing issues around keyword/operator definitionschatgpt-review-2d9c2fe5-6b96-41…

chatgpt-review-18d146c6-8f78-44…

.

  • Cheaper Fixes: The PR took shortcuts on certain types of fixes, opting for changes that minimized the blast radius without addressing deeper architectural inconsistencieschatgpt-review-94037eee-3695-4b…

.

Cheating Signal:

  • Documented Compromises: While the tokenize.dag scaffold is well-documented, the ambiguity around whether it’s a permanent authority or a temporary scaffold that needs dissolution still lingers .
  • Small Fixes: The implementer chose small fixes (e.g., simplifying Rust-based logic), but there are still multiple "quick fixes" accumulating, such as handling kind_name or width mismatches instead of addressing the root causechatgpt-review-18d146c6-8f78-44…

.

Path to Convergence:

  • Smallest Set of Next Actions:
    • Resolve the authority conflict between tokenize.dag and extdeps.languages.dag.syntax. This could involve either deriving keyword/operator facts from a single authority or clearly marking tokenize.dag as a temporary scaffoldchatgpt-review-18d146c6-8f78-44…

.

  • Address the inconsistencies around kind_name and width by ensuring these fields are either removed or tied to a single source of truthchatgpt-review-2d9c2fe5-6b96-41…

.

  • Implement a formal dissolution trigger if tokenize.dag is to be considered a scaffold rather than the canonical source of truthchatgpt-review-18d146c6-8f78-44…

.

  • Justification for KEEP_ITERATING: The loop is clearly making forward progress in simplifying and automating tokenization, but it needs to address the single-authority issue before further consumers are addedchatgpt-review-18d146c6-8f78-44…

chatgpt-review-94037eee-3695-4b…

.

Meta-Verdict:

  • 🔁 PAUSE_AND_REGROUP: The loop has made improvements in several areas, but the unresolved design decision about which file owns lexical authority needs to be addressed before continuing. The PR should either:
    1. Harmonize the authority between tokenize.dag and syntax.dag.
    2. Explicitly mark tokenize.dag as a scaffold with clear documentation on its dissolution.

Once the authority decision is made, the remaining work can proceed more easily and without further risk of accumulating debt.

By taking these actions, the PR will converge toward a stable, unified model and avoid accumulating further debt in the same areas.

✅ Review (blocking: 0, non-blocking: 1+/0-)

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/sg6_hand_authored_census_test.rs regen_tokenize.rs is now carried as documented, bounded shim debt with a concrete SG-2+ dissolution trigger instead of silent bin-census growth.

⚠️ The SG-0 banking work landed cleanly, but the already-open blocking lexical-authority comments on src/v3/compiler/tokenize.dag are still not resolved on this head.

Addresses codex blocker review on PR #581:

1. PB-1 scope was too narrow. Original text scoped the emitted
bootstrap loader to `dsl/std/*.dag` only. In reality,
`Dag::new()` chains four authorities into one fixtures array:
   `std_fixtures` + `STAGED_FILES` + `V3_SPECS` + `COMPILER_FILES`.
Rewrite PB-1 to cover all four; suggest staged per-authority
   substages (PB-1a/b/c/d) as an option.

2. PB-2..PB-5 framing was in present tense ("SG-1 merged, so X
exists today"), which conflated authority-creation work (SG)
with retirement work (PB). Reframed: two-step dissolution per
concept — SG creates authority + generated companion; PB deletes
the hand-maintained Rust file. Current-state section now names
what's actually landed (tokenize triplet, operators retired,
   lens generated files).

Note on codex's second blocker ("no v3 tokenize.dag, regen_tokenize,
tokenize_generated.rs in the repo"): those files DO exist on main
as of SG-1 landing (#556 + followups). Verified locally:

  src/v3/compiler/tokenize.dag — authority (180+ lines)
  src/v3/compiler/src/bin/regen_tokenize.rs — regen binary
  src/v3/compiler/src/tokenize_generated.rs — generated projection

The reviewer's concern about framing is still valid (PB-2 is the
retirement step, not the authority creation), but the factual
claim that these files don't exist is incorrect. Responding on the
PR with the verification.

* docs: add Pure Bootstrap thesis claim + PB program design

Adds a new §"Pure bootstrap (self-hosted stage0)" claim to
THESIS.md §"Thesis claims — complete list". The claim formalizes
what was implicit: editing compiler behavior must be a one-file
.dag change, never paired hand edits to a Rust stage0 file.

Inspired by v2's 97%-generated stage0 pattern (60 generated /
2 hand-maintained), the claim is mechanism-agnostic: emitted
Rust committed to tree, not a binary-blob deserializer. v2's
proven model guides v3's trajectory.

docs/design-pure-bootstrap.md captures the nine-stage PB program
(PB-0 ratchet through PB-8 graduation) with:
- Current-state measurement (78 hand-maintained .rs in src/v3/compiler)
- Target state (≤5 irreducible shim: CLI + runtime bridge)
- Dependencies on existing lanes (SG-2/3/4, Lane 1e, TM-1)
- Fixed-point acceptance gate (DB-8 extended to full compiler.dag)
- Strict acceptance criteria (every .rs is generated OR listed in
  hand_maintained_src; no middle state)

* docs(pure-bootstrap): correct COMPILER_FILES list

Reviewer caught a factual error: the doc listed 6 files under
COMPILER_FILES but only 5 exist at src/v3/compiler/*.dag on main.

Incorrect listing: `compiler.dag, pipeline.dag, tokenize.dag,
operators.dag, regen.dag, runtime_mirrors.dag` (6 files)

Actual contents of src/v3/compiler/*.dag on main:
- operators.dag
- pipeline.dag
- regen.dag
- runtime_mirrors.dag
- tokenize.dag

`dsl/gunbc/compiler.dag` is a separate authority (not part of
COMPILER_FILES), so removed it from the list and added a clarifying
note.

* docs(pure-bootstrap): cite correct SG-0 ratchet authority

Reviewer caught: PB-0 and acceptance criteria cited
compiler.dag's hand_maintained_src as the SG-0 ratchet source,
but the live SG-0 ratchet is actually EXPECTED_HAND_AUTHORED
(in sg0_census_test.rs) partitioned against GENERATED_FILES
(sourced from REGEN_OUTPUTS in build.rs). compiler.dag's
hand_maintained_src field is the related-but-separate stage0
fixed-point diff exclusion list.

Updated every reference to cite EXPECTED_HAND_AUTHORED as the
authoritative SG-0 ratchet source, with a note that
compiler.dag's list converges to the same set. Added explicit
disambiguation in both Current v3 state and PB-0 sections.
