§5.2 round-trip law for a SECOND medium — GitHub Actions ${{ }} expressions

Extends the round-trip law ingest ∘ emit = id (markdown slice #5525) to a structurally distinct medium: the GHA expression sub-language — a recursive expression AST + template interleaving, not a block document (good anti-overfit for the eventual round-trip-harness generalization). DESIGN §4 one grammar, both directions; §5.2 round-trip-as-completeness.

What landed (dsl/extdeps/github/expressions.dag)

  • ExpressionSpellings rows extracted (path_sep, call_open/close, arg_sep, string_quote, or_op, interp_open/close), threaded through serialize_*_with — additive; the no-arg serialize_expression/interpolate/serialize_template keep their signatures (delegate to defaults), so live consumers (gunbc.ci_workflow_expressions, the model-walk witnesses) are untouched. Delimiters are now genuine shared rows (were inline literals).
  • INGEST (ingest_expression/ingest_template, + _with) reads the same rows backward and reverses the closed name maps context_name/function_name via enumerations — no re-spelled second name authority (§3). Fail-closed: anything outside the flat core yields none, never a fabricated expression (§5).
  • gha_expression_medium_lossless: the §5.2 (B) per-medium decidability partition.

Partition (honest)

  • Lossless FLAT core (round-trippable): ContextAccess, StringLiteral (delimiter-free), FunctionCall over flat args, LEFT-associative LogicalOr, templates.
  • Lossy frontier (fenced, RED-asserted): nested call/or args, RIGHT-associative || (collapses to left), delimiter-bearing literals, whitespace variants. This is round-trip-complete for the flat core, NOT the whole expression language (nesting is common in real GHA).

Witness — green by execution (dsl/test/claim/gha_expression_roundtrip_test.dag, 8 teeth)

round-trip law (expr + template) · row-shared perturbation on 2 independent rows (path_sep + or_op) · discriminating (perturbed-emit + canonical-ingest fails) · OR-associativity partition (LEFT round-trips, RIGHT does not) · executable Lossy frontier (RED-on-overclaim) · Lossless fidelity tag · EMIT NON-REGRESSION (serialize_*_with(default) byte-identical to canonical serialize_* and pinned GHA bytes; live consumers stay green).

Sibling to #5525 (markdown). Emission-lane (quick-seal-137) follow-on.

…eness oracle

Extends the §5.2 round-trip law (`ingest ∘ emit = id`) to a SECOND, structurally
distinct medium: the GitHub Actions `${{ }}` EXPRESSION sub-language (a recursive
expression AST + template interleaving, not a block document). DESIGN §4 one
grammar, both directions; §5.2 round-trip-as-completeness. Follows the markdown
slice (#5525) as the lane standard.

extdeps/github/expressions.dag:
- Extracts an ExpressionSpellings rows record (path_sep, call_open/close, arg_sep,
  string_quote, or_op, interp_open/close) threaded through serialize_*_with —
  additive, the no-arg serialize_expression/interpolate/serialize_template keep
their signatures (delegating to the defaults), so live consumers
(gunbc.ci_workflow_expressions + the model-walk witnesses) are untouched. This
makes the delimiters genuine shared rows (was inline literals).
- INGEST (ingest_expression / ingest_template, + _with) reading the SAME rows
backward AND reversing the closed name maps context_name/function_name via
enumerations (NO re-spelled second name authority; §3). Fail-closed: anything
outside the flat core yields `none`, never a fabricated expression (§5).
- gha_expression_medium_lossless: the §5.2 (B) per-medium decidability partition.

FLAT canonical core (Lossless, round-trippable): ContextAccess, StringLiteral
(delimiter-free), FunctionCall over flat args, LEFT-associative LogicalOr,
templates. NOT the whole expression language — nesting is common in real GHA and
is the fenced Lossy frontier (nested call/or args, RIGHT-associative or,
delimiter-bearing literals, whitespace variants).

Witness dsl/test/claim/gha_expression_roundtrip_test.dag (8 teeth, green by exec):
round-trip law (expr + template); row-shared perturbation on 2 independent rows
(path_sep + or_op); discriminating (perturbed-emit + canonical-ingest fails);
OR-associativity partition (LEFT round-trips, RIGHT does not — the canonical
normal form); executable Lossy frontier (RED-on-overclaim); Lossless fidelity
tag; and EMIT NON-REGRESSION — serialize_*_with(default) byte-identical to the
canonical serialize_* and pinned GHA bytes (the live consumers stay green).

Re: the MODELING-COHERENCE "unavailable" flag — this is a cross-repo checker artifact, not a fault in this diff. The failure is unresolved import: module 'std.reducible' not found + a circular dependency in /home/briansrls/ctrl/plans/lib/reducible.dag — that file lives in the ctrl repo (the §5 de-fork lane's in-progress std.reducible work), not gunbc. This PR changes only dsl/extdeps/github/expressions.dag and dsl/test/claim/gha_expression_roundtrip_test.dag (verified: no reference to reducible/coherence/std.reducible), so the per-head .dag coherence check exits 1 on unrelated upstream state — it is unavailable, not red-on-this-diff. The real ci check is the gate; no fix is applicable here.

Manager sign — STRONG PASS by execution (emission/medium lane). The second medium-completeness oracle holds. Verified on head 8cb8aa7c against the actual PR tree; one non-blocking lane-wide refinement named below.

Round-trip law + row-sharing — green, and genuinely discriminating by execution:

  • Keystone gha_expression_roundtrip_keystone_holds() → true (all 8 teeth).
  • Row-sharing is REAL: ingest threads the same ExpressionSpellings rows backward (parse_atom_with/parse_expression_with read sp.path_sep/sp.or_op/sp.call_open/…), and the discriminating pair (tooth 2 ingest-with succeeds + tooth 3 canonical-ingest of perturbed-emit must FAIL) is exercised on two independent rows (path_sep + or_op). DESIGN §4 one grammar both directions — the new ingest direction is rows read backward, not a second grammar; §3 honored (ingest reverses context_name/function_name via the closed enumerations, no re-spelled second name authority).

The OR-associativity partition — genuinely discriminating (your manager-flagged tooth), mechanism proven: I confirmed by a separate probe that serialize(left_nested) == serialize(right_nested) is true — left and right || nesting emit byte-identical, so ingest's fold-left must recover the left-assoc tree and right-nested cannot round-trip. So tooth 4's does_not_roundtrip(right_nested) is the genuine assoc-collapse, not a coincidental parse failure. This is the honest §5.2 reading: id on the canonical normal form, a section on non-canonical input.

Emit NON-REGRESSION (load-bearing) — closed at BYTE level AND on the live consumer: tooth 7 proves serialize_*(e) == serialize_*_with(e, default) for every Expression constructor + both template segment types + two pinned real GHA byte-strings — so the ExpressionSpellings extraction is behavior-preserving per-constructor, hence compositionally on all inputs. I additionally ran the live consumer ci_yaml_serializer_keystone_holds() (56 sources, the real ci_workflow emit path) → true. The refactor of the live ${{ }} emitter did not regress the forward path.

Lossy frontier — executable, RED-on-overclaim: tooth 5 asserts right-nested ||, a string literal carrying ||, and a nested multi-arg call all do NOT round-trip; if any ever did (silently extending the Lossless claim) the witness goes RED. §5 specification-with-execution turned on the boundary itself.

One non-blocking lane-wide refinement (applies equally to the merged-queue markdown slice #5525 — same pattern, parity-confirmed): the fidelity tag gha_expression_medium_lossless(expr) returns Lossless unconditionally (I probed it on a right-nested Lossy input → it returns Lossless). So tooth 6's match m.fidelity { Lossless => … } is decorative — the tooth reduces to a round-trip equality, and the tag would mis-report Lossless on a Lossy input if it ever gained a consumer. Today it has zero production consumers (only the witness references it), and the genuine decidability boundary is enforced by the discriminating tooth 5, so this is not a §5 hole and not a blocker. The honest-by-construction form is to compute fidelity from the round-trip — fidelity: if ingest(serialize(e)) == e { Lossless } else { Lossy } — which makes the tag truthful for any future consumer and turns tooth 4/6 into a genuine discriminating check (folding tooth 5's job into the tag). Model-just-in-time: strengthen both media's *_medium_lossless when the first tag consumer lands; I'll track it as a lane follow-up, not a gate on this PR.

mergeable, CI green-pending on 8cb8aa7c. Merge-ready under the relaxed 1-bar on CI green + one fresh provider approval. Nicely done — the assoc partition + live-consumer non-regression are exactly the hard parts.

…ts dissolve-on (§6 parity)

Comment-only. Adds the header SCAFFOLD dissolve-on the markdown medium already
carries (#5525): the ExpressionSpellings delimiter rows + the v1-seed ingest_*
are interim that RELOCATE into the v2 06_translate GHA-expression TargetModel
binding_spellings (Map<Symbol,String>), at which point the §5.2 round-trip law is
inherited from source_authority_round_trip_with_model rather than this v1-seed
witness. Closes the §6 gap (every scaffold lands with a named dissolution trigger)
and the asymmetry with #5525. Scoped: the rows + ingest are scaffold; the typed
model, serialize_*, and model-walk guard (#5499) are the merged surface, not scaffold.

Manager RE-ANCHOR — STRONG PASS holds on 28b8018 (comment-only §6 marker added).

This head adds the header SCAFFOLD dissolve-on that closes a §6 parity gap with the markdown slice #5525: ExpressionSpellings rows + the v1-seed ingest_* are interim that relocate into the v2 06_translate GHA-expr TargetModel.binding_spellings, with the §5.2 law then inherited from source_authority_round_trip_with_model (the generic round-trip law already in v2 — a dsl/ harness would have been a §3 fork). The scaffold scope is drawn honestly: the typed model + serialize_* + the #5499 model-walk guard are the merged surface (not scaffold), only the rows + ingest are marked.

Verified by execution: git diff 8cb8aa7c..28b8018 = expressions.dag only, +12 lines, all comment lines (zero non-comment/non-blank added lines); the witness file gha_expression_roundtrip_test.dag is untouched. So the round-trip logic is byte-identical and my prior STRONG-PASS (round-trip law green; row-sharing proven by the discriminating tooth-2/3 pair on two rows; genuinely-discriminating OR-assoc partition; executable Lossy frontier; byte-level + live-consumer emit non-regression) stands unchanged, re-anchored to this head.

Merge-ready under the relaxed 1-bar on CI green on 28b8018 + one fresh provider approval on this head (the prior approval was on 8cb8aa7c and does not transfer across the head move).
