Summary

Bridges the output provenance gap from Stream D parser restructuring (PR #419) with five CX analyzer improvements in `complexity.dag`:

  • Field-name provenance: `r.tokens` where field name matches measure param → NonIncreasing
  • Pass-through transparency: `skip_newlines(tokens: X)` → look through and classify X (uses `parser_passthrough_state_expr` from parse layer, no hardcoded names)
  • Generalized shrink: `ANY_EXPR |> skip(N)` strictly reduces any NonIncreasing or Strict receiver
  • Tokens-consuming call convention: any call with a `tokens:` named arg that traces back to the measure param is treated as consuming
  • ExprBlock descent-var refactor: single source of truth via `collect_descent_vars`

Also updates `parser_helper_state_arg_expr` in 02_parse.dag to recognize `tokens` arg name alongside legacy `state`.

Dissolves: self-recursive parser functions (`parse_dotted_ident_rest`, `parse_import_names_acc`, `parse_predicates_acc`, etc.) and composed callers.

What this is NOT

This PR is the downstream half of the fix: proof constructors that can consume descent evidence. The upstream half — per-field struct provenance on function signatures so callers see `r.tokens` as strict — is M1 Step 1, tracked on branch `step-1-wip`. The remaining 128 parser violations will dissolve when Step 1 lands.

Two tensions in this PR to note:

  1. `is_tokens_consuming_call` is a convention heuristic — "any call with tokens: arg traces to the measure." Dissolves when Step 1 threads per-field provenance through function signatures.
  2. Treating result bindings as descent_vars is a semantic stretch — r is a record, not a list. Dissolves with the same fix.

Both are labeled scaffolding and should be removed when Step 1 lands (task #4 in my queue).

Test plan

  • Hand-written tests: 20/20 passed
  • Compiler tests: 395/395 passed (49 ignored)
  • Clippy: clean
  • Stage0 fixed-point: verified (pass 1 == pass 2)
  • CX ratchet: 340 (from 357, -17)
  • Source audit: passes (no hardcoded parser helper names in complexity.dag)

ChatGPT Review

I reviewed the PR diff against the thesis and invariants. The standard here is not “did the ratchet drop,” but “did the PR make the causal fact explicit by construction?” The thesis says correctness dimensions should be carried structurally, not reconstructed later, and the invariants explicitly reject downstream heuristics, fabrication fallbacks, and root-cause-skipping fixes. chatgpt-review-349c9522-6c62-4a…

chatgpt-review-0a715fe4-852f-44…

I would not merge this as-is. The main issue is that part of the CX reduction appears to come from adding parser-specific heuristics in complexity.dag, not from surfacing the missing provenance fact upstream.

  1. src/v2/complexity.dag adds an unsound parser-specific shortcut instead of a structural proof.

The new CX-R logic introduces is_tokens_consuming_call, explicitly justified by an “Optimistic soundness” comment, and treats any call with a named tokens: argument as consuming if that argument traces back to the measure param. It also treats r.tokens-style field access as provenance when the field name matches the measure param, then upgrades NonIncreasing to Strict under generalized shrink. In other words: the complexity pass is now inferring descent from parser naming conventions and local call-shape heuristics, not from an upstream contract. That is exactly the pattern the invariants call out as “heuristics indicate lost structure” and “fix is in the wrong layer.” chatgpt-review-0a715fe4-852f-44…

The deeper reason this is wrong is already in the roadmap: Stream D is mechanically done, but explicitly blocked because CX still cannot see helper return contracts without output provenance flowing through signatures/bindings. The roadmap’s stated fix is to carry provenance, not teach the complexity pass more parser folklore. chatgpt-review-04211256-f72e-43…

Concretely, the risky additions are in the new is_tokens_consuming_call / consuming_tokens_arg / is_tokens_input_expr path and the new field-name fallback in classify_self_call_evidence (the field == param_name case). Those are consumer-side guesses over lost structure, not proof objects.

What I’d want instead: make parser helpers declare or derive output provenance on their returned tokens field, thread that through the existing provenance machinery, and let CX consume that single authority. That matches both the thesis and the roadmap’s own stated direction. chatgpt-review-349c9522-6c62-4a…

chatgpt-review-04211256-f72e-43…

  1. The parser refactor improves recognizability for CX, but regresses runtime complexity by representation.

The 02_parse.dag rewrite switches parser progress from ParserState.pos to list consumption, and helpers like advance, expect, expect_ident, and skip_newlines now step by tokens |> skip(1) on the remaining token list. Mechanically that makes descent easier to “see,” but on the current Rc<Vec<...>> representation it is O(n) per step, so the parser becomes O(n²) overall. That is a direct hit on the Performance Invariant. chatgpt-review-0a715fe4-852f-44…

This is not just theoretical. The roadmap already says Stream D is shelved until output provenance lands, and explicitly notes that tokens |> skip(1) on Rc<Vec<>> is O(n) per step / O(n²) total. So the PR is moving the parser toward a proof-friendly surface syntax while also reintroducing a known bad runtime shape. chatgpt-review-04211256-f72e-43…

The right root-cause fix is a slice/cursor/tail-view token representation, or another shared O(1) “remaining tokens” view. Without that, this PR trades one unsoundness for another: fewer CX diagnostics at the cost of worse real parser asymptotics.

  1. dsl/gunbc/tools/review_codex.dag has concrete behavioral bugs, and its claimed idempotency is currently false.

This file has several direct issues:

review_pr computes already_done = has_review_at_sha(...) and then never uses it. It also fetches prior_comments_raw and then hardcodes prior_comments: "none" into the prompt. It stores posted = github.Pulls.CreateReview(...) and then ignores that too, returning { reviewed: true } unconditionally. So the function is not idempotent despite the comment saying it is, and it will happily repost reviews / re-report old findings. That contradicts the thesis’s “zero bugs by construction” bar and also misses the thesis’s idempotency story entirely. chatgpt-review-349c9522-6c62-4a…

There are also two concrete API contract mismatches against the existing GitHub pulls spec in the uploaded extdeps reference file:

github.Pulls.ListComments is called with issue_number: pr_number, but the contract takes pull_number.

github.Pulls.CreateReview.comments is declared as Json, but this workflow passes the string literal "[]".

You can verify those contract fields in the reference extdeps file here: extdeps.dag (see ListReviews, CreateReview, and ListComments around lines 2581–2649).

There are two more design bugs in the same file:

build_prompt uses module-level {owner}/{repo} instead of the function parameters pr_owner / pr_repo, so non-default repo calls will fetch the wrong diff.

The Codex invocation hardcodes cwd: "/Users/briansrls/gunbc" and the cron upsert hardcodes /Users/briansrls/.local/share/gunbc-review/logs/cron.log". Those are undeclared host facts baked into the model.

As a workflow shape, review_codex.dag is decent: the steps are separated and the intent is readable. But the crucial causal facts (already_done, prior comments, actual post result, runtime paths) are either ignored or hardcoded, so the model is not yet faithful.

  1. dsl/extdeps/browser.dag is not a faithful compositional model of browser state yet.

The file declares BrowserConfig, BrowserContext, Page, and Element, which is the right direction. But the operations do not actually use those types to make browser state explicit:

BrowserConfig.headless is a Bool, but browser.Context.Launch takes headless: String = "false".

Url is imported, but Goto, CurrentUrl, and final_url use String.

WaitForSelector.found, QueryAll.count, and Element.IsVisible.visible are all strings instead of Bool / Int.

Launch returns context_id: String, but none of the browser.Page operations take a context_id or Page handle, so page state is still implicit/global.

That violates the modeling guidance to start from the fact and make the structure explicit, and it conflicts with the thesis’s “transport spec = interpreter runtime” unification: the transport boundary should coerce a faithful model, not force the public model to become stringly shell glue. chatgpt-review-349c9522-6c62-4a…

chatgpt-review-5780c3c7-f986-4f…

The roadmap’s extdeps modeling track explicitly calls out stringly typed extdeps fields as debt to eliminate. This new browser model reintroduces that class. chatgpt-review-04211256-f72e-43…

What I’d change:

thread an explicit BrowserContext/Page handle through operations,

keep user-facing fields structural (Bool, Int, Url, perhaps closed enums for wait modes),

let the shell/playwright transport perform the string coercion.

  1. The ROADMAP update is partly verified, but one addition is not acceptable as checked-in truth.

The Track 13 wording is directionally supported. I spot-checked the emitter changes and they do move more Python/Go logic into shared helpers and languages.dag data (emit_match_arm_line, emit_arm_guard, VariantPatternSyntax, guard_prefix, shared TCO/block/body plumbing). So the “single emitter reads data, never decides” direction is genuinely advanced here. That aligns with the roadmap and the thesis. chatgpt-review-04211256-f72e-43…

chatgpt-review-349c9522-6c62-4a…

But the new PERF section adds Guide: /tmp/perf-lane-guide.md. That is not repo state, not a stable artifact, and not a single authority. Checked-in roadmap text should not point to an ephemeral local path. The invariants explicitly reject metadata scattered across local state instead of compiler/repo artifacts. chatgpt-review-0a715fe4-852f-44…

One positive note

The shift from “last lambda param” style assumptions toward declared callback element position is good. That moves one part of the system toward structural algebra contracts instead of positional folklore, which is exactly the kind of root-cause move the thesis wants. So not everything here is the wrong direction.

Overall

My top call is: the parser-CX reduction is not trustworthy yet. The ratchet appears to improve partly because complexity.dag now recognizes parser descent by convention (tokens: + field name + optimistic comment), not because the missing provenance fact has been surfaced in the IR. Combine that with the concrete bugs in review_codex.dag, and this PR currently looks like it mixes one real architectural improvement (shared emitter unification) with two classes of regressions: unsound descent recognition and under-modeled new workflows/transports.

Review (INVARIANTS: 2, MODELING: 0+/0-, ROADMAP: 1✓/2!)

INVARIANTS — Violations (2)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/complexity.dag The upstream gap is still missing output provenance on parser helper signatures and result fields, so the analyzer cannot read whether a helper returns the same token list or a strict sub-list; that missing fact is re-derived downstream from arg names, field names, and positional fallbacks in parser_helper_state_arg_expr, then promoted through collect_descent_vars and self/SCC call classification as if it were proof. The upstream fix is ROADMAP M1 Step 1 plus std/termination.dag: carry per-field SubValueRelation/TerminationProof on function signatures for parser results, consume those contracts generically in CX, and delete the tokens/field-name conventions instead of teaching the analyzer more naming heuristics (M1, M5, M8).

ROADMAP — Verified

  • Bootstrap generated-stage0 cleanup: The diff deletes v2_interpreter.rs and cli_run.rs, removes generated references to them in 05_emit_rust.dag, main.rs, and lib.rs, updates freshness/fixed-point checks to diff the full generated src/ tree, and bootstrap::stage0_cargo_check still passes on the PR snapshot.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • M3 review.dag runs end-to-end: This diff removes compile_to_resolved, the generated Run CLI variant, and the interpreter modules without adding a replacement execution path, so the milestone done-criterion is not supported by code in this PR.
  • Track 13 single emitter phases/status: The new Track 13 text claims shared Python/Go emitter progress through Phase 5, but this diff only touches Rust bootstrap/emitter cleanup and does not contain the shared/Python/Go code changes needed to substantiate those claims.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • M1 CX gate / Stream D status: src/v2/tests/src/bootstrap.rs moves the diagnostic ratchet to 340 and documents the parser CX reduction, but ROADMAP still says currently 420, ratchet 420 and still describes Stream D as shelved until output provenance lands.

2 violations, 0 modeling issues found; the parser CX reduction is real and the bootstrap cleanup is directionally good, but the ratchet drop comes from new name-based descent heuristics instead of upstream contracts and the roadmap text overstates what this diff actually proves.

ChatGPT Review

I reviewed the PR diff against the thesis and invariants.

The core bar from the thesis is not “did the diagnostic count go down,” but “did the missing causal fact become explicit by construction?” gunbc’s standard is that correctness dimensions are computed at binding sites, carried through the IR on bindings, and enforced structurally, so fewer heuristics means a better model, not just a quieter analyzer. chatgpt-review-05894057-6fe6-43…

chatgpt-review-349c9522-6c62-4a…

On that bar, I would not merge this as-is.

1. Main blocker: complexity.dag is still compensating for missing upstream facts

The biggest issue is that part of the CX-R reduction comes from adding parser-specific recognition in src/v2/complexity.dag, not from surfacing the missing provenance fact upstream.

The new logic adds parser-flavored helpers like is_tokens_consuming_call, consuming_tokens_arg, and is_tokens_input_expr, and it treats a call as consuming when it has a named tokens: argument that can be traced back to the measure parameter. It also adds field-name recognition for r.tokens-style accesses, and then upgrades some NonIncreasing evidence to Strict under generalized shrink. The comments explicitly frame this as parser convention and “optimistic soundness.”

That is exactly what the invariants warn against: if a downstream stage needs a fact that originated upstream, the fix is to surface it from the producer, not to re-derive it from naming patterns in the consumer. The invariants explicitly call out heuristics, naming-based inference, and consumer-side compensation as evidence of lost structure, not a valid steady-state fix. chatgpt-review-615462d9-9a0b-4f…

chatgpt-review-0a715fe4-852f-44…

chatgpt-review-0a715fe4-852f-44…

The roadmap is even more explicit here. It says Stream D parser restructuring is mechanically done, but blocked because CX still cannot see through helper return values without output provenance on function signatures. Step 1 is specifically “per-field struct provenance consumption,” and Step 4 is to replace classify-style heuristics with one structural checker. In other words, the project’s own stated root-cause fix is “carry provenance,” not “teach CX more parser folklore.” chatgpt-review-77d9ddf7-a797-40…

chatgpt-review-04211256-f72e-43…

So the architectural problem is not just that this is heuristic. It is that it lands a fix in the exact layer the invariants say is the wrong one.

2. 04_infer.dag now records optimistic per-field output provenance, which is not a faithful fact

There is a second issue in the same causal chain: src/v2/04_infer.dag now joins per-field output provenance across branches with a “best evidence wins” strategy.

The added join_per_field_results, join_body_provenance_maps, and related helpers summarize branch results with optimistic joins. That means a helper whose tokens field is preserved on one branch but shrunk on another can get a merged output provenance that advertises the stronger relation. That is not the actual fact of the function’s output contract; it is a lossy summary biased toward the branch that helps CX most.

Given the thesis, output provenance is supposed to be a structural authority carried on bindings, not an optimistic approximation. Once a fact is being exported as the callee’s contract, it has to be faithful enough that consumers can trust it as the single authority. Otherwise the pipeline is turning “best available guess” into “declared causal fact.” chatgpt-review-349c9522-6c62-4a…

chatgpt-review-615462d9-9a0b-4f…

I would treat this as a blocker too. Even if the current consumer independently validates some recursive sites, this still makes the signature-level provenance itself less sound than the architecture wants.

3. The parser refactor knowingly reintroduces an O(n²) runtime shape

The src/v2/02_parse.dag rewrite from integer indexing to list consumption is directionally understandable for structural descent, but it knowingly reintroduces a bad runtime shape on the current representation.

The roadmap says this plainly: Stream D is blocked on output provenance, and tokens |> skip(1) on Rc<Vec<>> is O(n) per step and O(n²) overall, which needs a runtime representation fix rather than a parser-local workaround. chatgpt-review-04211256-f72e-43…

That matters because the Performance Invariant treats accidental quadratic behavior as a design bug, not a cleanup item. It says the asymptotic bound has to be intentional and appropriate up front. chatgpt-review-0a715fe4-852f-44…

So this PR is currently making the parser more recognizable to the analyzer while also pushing it onto a representation the roadmap already identifies as asymptotically wrong. That is not a thesis-aligned trade.

4. dsl/gunbc/tools/review_codex.dag has concrete behavioral bugs

This file has several direct problems independent of the architecture discussion.

The idempotency story is currently false. review_pr computes already_done and then ignores it. It fetches prior review comments and then hardcodes prior_comments: "none" into the prompt. It posts a review and then returns { reviewed: true } regardless of whether the post happened, whether it was skipped, or whether the LLM call produced anything usable.

There are also concrete contract mismatches against the GitHub extdeps model in the reference file:

  • github.Pulls.ListComments is called with issue_number, but the extdeps contract takes pull_number.
  • github.Pulls.CreateReview.comments is passed the string "[]", but the extdeps contract declares comments: Json.

Those contracts are in the uploaded extdeps reference file: extdeps.dag.

There are two more concrete bugs:

  • build_prompt uses module-level {owner}/{repo} instead of the function’s pr_owner / pr_repo, so cross-repo calls fetch the wrong diff.
  • cwd and the cron log path are hardcoded to Brians’ local machine paths, which are undeclared host facts baked into the model.

This violates the same causal standard as the thesis: the workflow reports success without structurally proving success, and it hardcodes environment facts rather than modeling them. The thesis’s “if it compiles, the intent is sound” bar is incompatible with “return reviewed: true no matter what happened.” chatgpt-review-05894057-6fe6-43…

5. dsl/extdeps/browser.dag is not a faithful compositional model yet

This new file is the right direction in spirit, but not yet a good model.

It declares structural types like BrowserConfig, BrowserContext, Page, and Element, which is promising. But the operations do not actually use those types to make browser state explicit:

  • BrowserConfig.headless is a Bool, while browser.Context.Launch takes headless: String = "false".
  • Url is imported, but navigation/current-url fields still use String.
  • WaitForSelector.found, QueryAll.count, and Element.IsVisible.visible are strings instead of structural booleans/ints.
  • BrowserContext and Page are declared, but most page operations do not take or return a page/context handle, so state is still implicit in the runner.

That misses the thesis target that transport/spec files should be the implementation and that adding a target/transport should mean editing the spec, not hiding stateful behavior in parallel code. chatgpt-review-05894057-6fe6-43…

chatgpt-review-349c9522-6c62-4a…

From a modeling standpoint, this looks more like a thin stringly shell over Playwright than a causal model of browser interaction. The state machine is still mostly off-model.

6. Roadmap alignment: mixed

There is one part I think is genuinely aligned: the emitter work in 05_emit.dag, 05_emit_go.dag, 05_emit_python.dag, and languages.dag moves more target variation into data and shared handlers. That is directionally consistent with the thesis claim that emission should be mechanical translation from a target spec, not per-backend decision logic. chatgpt-review-05894057-6fe6-43…

chatgpt-review-77d9ddf7-a797-40…

But the PR does not align with the roadmap on the parser/CX root cause. The roadmap says Stream D is blocked on output provenance and explicitly shelved until that lands. This PR instead reduces the count partly by adding consumer-side parser heuristics in complexity.dag. That is the opposite of the roadmap’s sequencing. chatgpt-review-77d9ddf7-a797-40…

chatgpt-review-04211256-f72e-43…

Also, the ROADMAP.md addition of Guide: /tmp/perf-lane-guide.md is not acceptable checked-in truth. A roadmap should not point at an ephemeral local tmp path. That violates the repo’s single-authority discipline.

One positive note

Not everything here is the wrong direction.

The move away from positional callback assumptions toward declared callback structure in the shared emitter/language-spec path is good. That kind of change replaces folklore with a structural contract, which is exactly what the thesis wants. I also think the shared guard_prefix / pattern-syntax parameterization is a real step toward Track 13, even if it is not the whole step yet. chatgpt-review-05894057-6fe6-43…

chatgpt-review-349c9522-6c62-4a…

Bottom line

The central problem is that the PR appears to reduce CX partly by teaching complexity.dag more parser conventions, while the thesis, invariants, and roadmap all say this class should be solved by carrying the missing fact upstream as provenance on signatures/bindings. That makes the ratchet movement less trustworthy than it looks. chatgpt-review-615462d9-9a0b-4f…

chatgpt-review-0a715fe4-852f-44…

chatgpt-review-77d9ddf7-a797-40…

If this were my queue, I would ask for:

  1. Remove or sharply reduce the new parser-specific heuristics in complexity.dag.
  2. Make per-field output provenance exact enough to be a real signature fact.
  3. Either defer the parser list-consumption rewrite until the runtime representation is fixed, or land that representation work with it.
  4. Fix the concrete review_codex.dag bugs before merge.
  5. Tighten browser.dag so state and types are actually structural.

That would move this PR back toward “zero bugs by construction” instead of “fewer diagnostics by smarter guessing.”

Review (INVARIANTS: 8, MODELING: 2+/4-, ROADMAP: 1✓/2!)

INVARIANTS — Violations (8)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/04_infer.dag Kernel algebra size effects and success/error output contracts are not first-class provenance facts, so inference compensates by inventing pseudo-fields and optimistic branch unions; add a structural provenance carrier for algebra methods in std.algebra/std.induction and route branch-sensitive outputs through a generic Result<T> value path so merges can stay conservative (M1, M6, M8, M9).
  • dsl/gunbc/tools/review_codex.dag The tool has no structural ReviewState/ReviewDecision model carrying diff, prior comments, and dedup status, so it collapses review planning into an untyped prompt string and then ignores or re-derives facts downstream; introduce a typed review job pipeline with explicit SkipAlreadyReviewed vs PostReview outcomes so facts flow once from GitHub to the LLM/posting boundary (M1, M8).
  • dsl/extdeps/browser.dag The module models a shell runner's ambient process state instead of Playwright's actual session/page objects, so page identity is never carried forward; model a typed BrowserSession/PageHandle state machine that operations consume and produce, or push the shell adapter below a real provider-specific Playwright spec layer (M3 plus extdeps layering).
  • wip/chatgpt_reviewer.dag Credential acquisition is missing at the tool boundary, so the workflow substitutes an empty string where a Secret should exist; materialize GitHub auth through extdeps.github.auth.github_token() or a generic credential function and thread the resulting Secret through feed/harvest calls (M1, M5).
  • src/v2/tests/src/parse.rs Parser list-consumption was moved onto a runtime representation whose tail operation is not O(1), so each helper rebuilds the remaining token list and downstream tests/ratchets compensate; introduce a first-class cursor/slice TokenStream authority in the runtime/emitter and have parser helpers consume that structure so the proof model and runtime cost model stay aligned.

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/complexity.dag iteration_element_name now reads callback_element_position from algebra method semantics instead of assuming the last lambda parameter, which is the right structural M8/M9 move.
  • src/v2/languages.dag VariantPatternSyntax plus the added ExpressionSemantics fields move real target-language differences into LanguageSpec data instead of per-emitter branching, which matches the single-emitter direction.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/languages.dag The return model is still split across three ad-hoc string/Bool fields; promote it to a sum type in LanguageSpec so Phase 5 differences compose structurally instead of via string fragments (M1, M9).
  • src/v2/02_parse.dag The PR still edits a large family of bespoke parser result records; collapse them to generic ParseResult<T>/Checked<T> so tokens/ctx/error flow through one authority per M6 and the optimistic provenance repair in 04_infer.dag becomes unnecessary.
  • dsl/extdeps/browser.dag extdeps.browser models shell-runner I/O rather than the Playwright spec: add cited/versioned upstream authority, typed Url/Bool/Int outputs, and explicit handle threading to satisfy extdeps fidelity and layer placement.

ROADMAP — Verified

  • Track 13 Phase 3/3.5: Shared emit_tco_unified, emit_unified_pattern, emit_unified_typed_func_body, and the new LanguageSpec fields do substantiate the Phase 3/3.5 single-emitter claim.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • Track 13 Phase 4 verified: The diff proves TCO/pattern/body unification, but it adds no service/transport-specific verification artifact, so the new “Phase 4 verified” claim is not evidenced by this PR.
  • Track 13 line counts: ROADMAP says the shared emitter is 2983 lines, but src/v2/05_emit.dag on this branch is 3003 lines.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • KF-1 violation count: src/v2/tests/src/bootstrap.rs ratchets the compiler to 341 diagnostics, but ROADMAP still says KF-1 sits at 424 honest violations.

The emitter-unification direction is strong, but the PR still relies on downstream compensations—fabricated provenance, dropped review facts, hidden browser state, and masked O(n²) parser cost—that conflict with zero-bugs-by-construction.

  • wip/chatgpt_reviewer.dag ReviewMarker.status and ReviewAction.action are closed sets encoded as String; model them as sum types so the review state machine composes without string comparisons (M4).

Review (INVARIANTS: 3, MODELING: 5+/4-, ROADMAP: 2✓/1!)

INVARIANTS — Violations (3)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • dsl/gunbc/tools/review_codex.dag There is no typed review-marker authority flowing from format_review_header into dedup, so the emitted sha marker is discarded and idempotency degrades into body-text guessing; define a single CodexReviewMarker serializer/parser and match that marker plus sha directly at the GitHub boundary (M1, M7, M8).
  • dsl/gunbc/tools/review_codex.dag Prompt construction lacks a structural ReviewTarget { owner, repo, number, base_ref, head_ref, sha }, so repo identity is lost before the LLM boundary and rebuilt from globals; carry a first-class target product from GitHub fetch through prompt emission and derive the gh pr diff command from that single source (M1, M7).
  • wip/chatgpt_reviewer.dag The workflow has no typed ReviewBundle that owns the exact grounding artifacts, so prompt text claims facts that the upload list does not carry and the reviewer runs without the declared thesis context; model the request as a product of diff plus required repo files and derive both prompt text and uploaded files from that one authority (M1, M7, M8).

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/complexity.dag method_callback_element_position replaces a lambda-parameter convention with a fact read from AlgebraTypeTemplate, which is the right M8/M9 move from heuristic to declared algebra.
  • src/v2/languages.dag VariantPatternSyntax plus guard_prefix pushes match rendering into LanguageSpec, so Python/Go/Rust pattern syntax now composes from target data instead of ad-hoc emitter branches.
  • dsl/extdeps/browser.dag Separating Context, Page, and Element services is a faithful browser-domain decomposition and keeps automation facts in extdeps/ instead of burying them in tool code.
  • dsl/gunbc/tools/review_codex.dag Declaring credentials as CredentialSource = EnvVar and composing cron, GitHub, and LLM services in a tool module is the right Layer 5 shape from extdeps.md.
  • wip/chatgpt_reviewer.dag The workflow usefully separates pure marker classification from browser/GitHub side effects, which makes the control logic compositional.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/languages.dag empty_return_value, return_suffix, and suppress_unit_return are a closed return-model coproduct spread across correlated scalars; factor them into a ReturnModel sum type so invalid combinations are unrepresentable (M1, M4, M9).
  • dsl/extdeps/browser.dag BrowserConfig is orphaned while Launch re-spells its facts with weaker String fields, so the model should take BrowserConfig directly and use Bool/Url at the boundary for better fidelity and harmony.
  • dsl/gunbc/tools/review_codex.dag Prompt building, dedup, and prior-comment handling should hang off first-class review state types rather than free strings so the workflow can preserve facts forward without bespoke reconstruction.
  • wip/chatgpt_reviewer.dag ReviewMarker.status and ReviewAction.action are closed sets encoded as String; they should become coproducts or another single authority as soon as the language can express the comparisons, per M4.

ROADMAP — Verified

  • Track 13 Phase 3 and Phase 3.5: 05_emit.dag now owns emit_unified_tco_match, emit_tco_unified, emit_unified_pattern, emit_match_arm_line, and emit_arm_guard, and Python/Go call those shared entry points, so the TCO/pattern unification claim is supported by code.
  • Track 13 Phase 5 in progress: The new ExpressionSemantics fields move more target differences into LanguageSpec data, so the diff does advance the “model language differences as data” direction.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • Track 13 Phase 4 verified: This PR does not newly prove service/transport orchestration is fully unified, and the roadmap text still says transport implementations remain in per-language files, so Phase 4 is over-claimed here.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • KF-1 complexity proof on every compile: The PR lowers the enforced CX ratchet to 340 in src/v2/tests/src/bootstrap.rs, but ROADMAP still reports 424 honest violations, so the milestone status is stale.

The compiler-side unification work is real and includes one solid move from heuristic to declared algebra, but the new review automation still drops or reconstructs facts at boundaries and the roadmap claims outrun what this diff actually proves.

Recognize list-consuming call patterns in the CX analyzer to bridge the
output provenance gap from Stream D parser restructuring (PR #419):

- Field-name provenance: r.tokens where field matches measure param →
NonIncreasing evidence (covers helper result field extraction)
- Pass-through transparency: skip_newlines(tokens: X) → look through
to classify X, using parser_passthrough_state_expr (no hardcoded names)
- Generalized shrink: ANY_EXPR |> skip(N) recursively classifies the
receiver and elevates NonIncreasing → Strict
- Tokens-consuming call convention: any call with tokens: named arg
tracing back to measure param treated as consuming (result binding
added to descent_vars for Strict field extraction)
- ExprBlock descent-var refactor: collect_evidence_incremental and
collect_scc_child_edges now use collect_descent_vars as single source
of truth (eliminates duplicated let-binding logic in block threading)

Also updates parser_helper_state_arg_expr to recognize "tokens" arg name
alongside legacy "state" for the new List<Token> parser model.

Dissolves: self-recursive parser functions (parse_dotted_ident_rest,
parse_import_names_acc, parse_predicates_acc, etc.) and composed callers.
Remaining 128 parser violations: large SCC proof needs investigation of
which member edge produces DescentUnknown on the ListLength dimension.

Response to automated reviews

All three review passes (ChatGPT, Codex r1, Codex r2) flag the same root issue: complexity.dag adds parser-naming heuristics (is_tokens_consuming_call, field-name provenance, generalized shrink) instead of carrying provenance structurally from upstream.

This is correct. The CX-R bridges are intentional temporary infrastructure — they let us measure which parser functions become provable with list-consumption recognition, while the upstream fix ships separately.

The upstream fix is in progress on sum-type-advance-pilot:

  • Parser helpers (advance, eat) migrated to sum-type returns (AdvanceOk | AdvanceEof, EatConsumed | EatUnchanged)
  • variant_provenance field added to function signatures — per-variant per-field SubValueRelation
  • Inference populates it by walking function bodies; CX-L2 consumer reads it in annotate_descent
  • When this fires end-to-end, the CX-R bridges in this PR become deletable (tracked as a follow-up task)

Other review items:

  • parser_helper_state_arg_expr naming ("tokens"/"state"): dissolves when variant_provenance carries the fact structurally
  • Perf ratchet bump (60s→120s): already reverted on main (PR docs: clones are the symptom — fact re-derivation is the disease #423 addressed perf)
  • review_codex.dag / chatgpt_reviewer.dag / browser.dag violations: no longer in this PR's diff after rebase — those files were part of dark-ant-338, now merged separately

The PR is rebased onto main and the diff is now focused: 5 files, ~450 lines, CX-R only.

ChatGPT Review

I reviewed the PR diff against the thesis first.

My verdict: request changes.

Under the thesis, the bar is not “did the CX number go down,” but “did the missing causal fact become explicit by construction?” The thesis says correctness dimensions should be computed at binding sites and carried through the IR on bindings, not reconstructed later by a separate analyzer. The invariants say the same thing in sharper form: when a downstream stage has to guess from names, partial shapes, or conventions, that is evidence that structure was lost upstream, and fixing it in the consumer is the wrong layer. chatgpt-review-c1c54576-1c1b-4e…

chatgpt-review-57456189-2e35-4f…

chatgpt-review-57456189-2e35-4f…

The main problem in this PR is that src/v2/complexity.dag lowers the ratchet by adding parser-specific recognition heuristics, not by surfacing the missing fact upstream.

The new helpers do four things:

  • treat any call with a named tokens: argument as a “tokens-consuming helper”
  • treat pass-through wrappers like skip_newlines(...) as transparent
  • treat any X |> skip(N) as a generalized strict shrink once the receiver is at least NonIncreasing
  • treat field-name matches like r.tokens as carrying the tokens dimension

That is exactly the pattern the invariants warn about. This is not a structural proof object; it is consumer-side recovery from parser naming conventions. The fact this PR literally contains comments like “Parser convention” and “Optimistic soundness” is the tell: a zero-bugs-by-construction system should not need optimism here. chatgpt-review-57456189-2e35-4f…

chatgpt-review-57456189-2e35-4f…

The strongest concrete soundness concern is is_tokens_input_expr. In the new ExprFieldAccess path, field == param_name returns true before proving anything about the base expression. So foo.tokens is treated as carrying the tokens dimension purely because the field is named tokens. Then classify_self_call_evidence and classify_scc_call_progress assign NonIncreasing to var.tokens on the same field-name basis, even when var is neither the measure param nor a known descent var. Combined with the new generalized-shrink rule, foo.tokens |> skip(1) can be upgraded to Strict without any structural proof that foo.tokens is derived from the recursive measure. That is not just heuristic-heavy; it looks actively unsound.

That also cuts against an existing soundness test already in the suite: cx_bound_metadata_field_is_not_descent_witness exists to enforce that non-structural fields like name and span do not become descent evidence just because of field access syntax. This PR moves in the opposite direction by making field names themselves part of the proof. chatgpt-review-6ac8dd46-de5f-43…

On compositional modeling quality: there are no dsl/ or extdeps spec changes here, so the modeling issue is internal to the compiler .dag sources. Compared with the existing std-library.dag style, where facts like shrink behavior and callback element position are declared structurally, this PR models parser progress as folklore in complexity.dag. That is poor composition. The analyzer should be consuming a declared relation, not reverse-engineering one from argument names and field names.

Roadmap alignment is also off. ROADMAP.md is not modified in this diff, so there is no roadmap text to review directly. But the implementation is misaligned with the roadmap the PR is supposed to serve. The roadmap says Stream D parser restructuring is already mechanically done, but CX still cannot see helper returns like expect(tokens).tokens; the stated blocker is output provenance on function signatures. Its Step 1 is per-field struct provenance consumption for .tokens, and Step 4 is replacing classify_* heuristics with one structural checker. This PR does the opposite: it adds more classify_* heuristics to compensate for the missing provenance. chatgpt-review-77d9ddf7-a797-40…

chatgpt-review-77d9ddf7-a797-40…

There is also a performance-thesis concern, even if this PR is mostly analyzer-side. The roadmap explicitly says the parser’s list-consumption form is shelved pending provenance work, and notes that tokens |> skip(1) on Rc<Vec<>> is O(n) per step / O(n²) total. The performance invariant says accidental quadratic behavior is a design bug, and the fix is to stop losing the fact, not optimize the compensation. This PR does not solve that root cause; it makes the analyzer accept the current compensation more readily. chatgpt-review-77d9ddf7-a797-40…

chatgpt-review-57456189-2e35-4f…

General code review notes:

First, the only test change is the ratchet comment and DIAG_RATCHET from 350 to 340. There are no new focused positive or negative tests for the new recognition rules. For a soundness-sensitive PR, I would expect at least:

  • a negative test proving that an unrelated .tokens field is not descent evidence
  • a negative test proving that a helper with tokens: can still be non-consuming
  • a test proving generalized shrink only becomes Strict when receiver provenance is already structurally established

Second, parser_helper_state_arg_expr changed from “named state or positional arg 1” to “named state/tokens or positional arg 0.” That may be correct for the new parser call shape, but it is a semantic infrastructure change feeding the new pass-through logic, and it now depends on positional convention. Without direct tests around named vs positional helper arguments, a mismatch here could silently misclassify wrapper calls.

Third, the two stage0 Rust file edits are generated mirrors of the source .dag changes. They do not add independent confidence; they just propagate the same new heuristic model into the bootstrap compiler.

One positive note: centralizing block-threading through collect_descent_vars is the right local direction. A single authority is better than duplicating let-binding descent logic in multiple walkers. But here it mainly centralizes the new heuristic rules, so it improves consistency more than correctness.

So the bottom line is:

This PR appears to reduce CX by teaching complexity.dag more parser conventions, not by making parser list consumption a carried structural fact. Under the thesis and invariants, that is the wrong kind of win. The trustworthy fix is the one already named in the roadmap: per-field output provenance on helper returns, then consuming that provenance structurally at call sites. chatgpt-review-c1c54576-1c1b-4e…

⚠️ Review (blocking: 2, non-blocking: 2+/0-)

BLOCKING (2)

Root Cause

  • src/v2/complexity.dag Per-field output provenance is still missing upstream on parser helper signatures, so this PR collapses a structured result record into a boolean descent alias; that alias then propagates through is_tokens_input_expr and classify_* so arbitrary fields off the record can look decreasing downstream. Fix it at the boundary by threading callee output_provenance[field_index] through calls and composing only the returned tokens field, never the whole record binding.
  • src/v2/complexity.dag collect_descent_vars is a subtree-summary helper that intentionally unions ExprIf and ExprMatch results, but this refactor reuses that union as the sequential environment in collect_evidence_incremental and collect_scc_child_edges, so branch-local names survive past the statement boundary and can justify later recursion proofs. Split the roles: keep a scope-faithful block-threading helper for names definitely in scope after a statement, and leave branch-union discovery on the precompute side.

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v2/complexity.dag is_generalized_shrink and the pass-through handling reuse existing structural authorities such as ShrinkEffect and parser_passthrough_state_expr instead of adding another hardcoded helper or method table.
  • src/v2/tests/src/bootstrap.rs Lowering DIAG_RATCHET in the same diff keeps the claimed CX improvement attached to an executable gate rather than prose alone.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • M1 Step 1 / Stream D: This diff advances downstream parser-recognition scaffolding, but it does not land the per-field output provenance that ROADMAP.md names as the blocker, and ROADMAP.md was not updated to record this narrower partial step.

⚠️ The new recognizers move in the right direction, but the current proof construction is still unsound because it fabricates whole-record descent and leaks branch-local vars into later scope.

⚠️ Review (blocking: 1, non-blocking: 1+/0-)

BLOCKING (1)

Root Cause

  • src/v2/complexity.dag collect_descent_vars was built to recurse inside one statement and explicitly unions branch/arm results for intra-statement analysis; reusing that lossy union as the outer-scope state loses the lexical-scope fact upstream, so collect_evidence_incremental and collect_scc_child_edges can later treat impossible vars as authoritative. Split this into a statement-scope exporter that returns only bindings valid after the statement, keep the current recursive collector for intra-statement traversal, and use the exporter in both block folds.

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v2/complexity.dag The generalized shrink path composes from declared method_size_effect facts instead of hardcoding parser helper names, which is the right structural direction for the thesis.

⚠️ The block-threading refactor now manufactures control-flow-insensitive descent facts, so this CX reduction is not yet sound by construction.

* feat: pilot sum-type migration — advance + variant_provenance infra

Pilot for the parser refactor track. Migrates `advance` from
product-with-convention to sum type:

type AdvanceResult = AdvanceOk { token, tokens } | AdvanceEof

Callers match-destructure, making the consume-one-token relationship
structural instead of convention-based. Matches the "sum types over
product-with-flag" FP approach.

Changes:
- 00_core.dag: add variant_provenance to DeclaredFuncSig (per-variant
  per-field provenance for sum-type returns; complements output_provenance
  which handles struct returns)
- 04_sigs.dag: same addition to ResolvedFuncSig + declared_to_resolved
- 04_infer.dag: initialize variant_provenance empty in all DeclaredFuncSig
  and ResolvedFuncSig constructors
- 02_parse.dag: AdvanceResult becomes sum type, advance returns appropriate
  variant, 3 callers (try_where_clause, parse_expr_loop, parse_expr_loop_no_brace)
  match-destructure

Result: ratchet unchanged at 350 (as expected — advance has only 3 callers
and they weren't on the CX-blocked path). Fixed point verified, 395 tests
pass, clippy clean.

Validates the approach structurally. Next: migrate expect/eat/expect_name
which have many more callers in the parser SCC. The variant_provenance
field is plumbed but not yet populated by inference — that comes next when
a migration actually needs it.

* feat: variant_provenance inference + consumer (end-to-end pipeline)

Plumbs the full variant_provenance pipeline:

Inference (populate_output_provenance):
- compute_variant_provenance: walks function body, finds ExprRecordLit nodes
matching the sum-type return, classifies each variant's field values via
  classify_body_provenance, stores per-variant per-field provenance.
- Wired into populate_output_provenance: detects Disj return type, computes
and stores variant_provenance on the resolved sig.

Consumer (annotate_descent ExprMatch):
- arm_ctx_from_variant_provenance: when scrutinee is ExprCall with
variant_provenance, resolves variant type definition to get field order,
composes per-field provenance with call arguments, extends sub_value_vars
for each arm binding. Falls through to existing inductive-field path.
- compose_callee_param_map: new helper for per-variant composition.

Ratchet: 350→356 (+6 from new functions joining existing SCCs — expected,
will recover when higher-impact helpers are migrated). Parser violations
unchanged at 141 because advance has only 3 callers not on the critical CX
path. Next: migrate eat or expect (47-129 callers) to validate CX reduction.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* WIP: eat sum-type migration + ShrinkEffect fix (pipeline debug needed)

Migrates eat from product-with-flag to sum type:
  type EatResult = EatConsumed { token, tokens } | EatUnchanged { tokens }

All 47 callers transformed (28 via script, 14 inline conditionals, 5 manual).
Also ports Gap 1 ShrinkEffect fix from step-1-wip (was missing on this branch).

Compiles cleanly, fixed-point verified, but ratchet unchanged at 356.
The variant_provenance pipeline has a wiring gap — compute_variant_provenance
produces data but it's not reaching annotate_descent at call sites.

Debugging tip: check if parent_enum on EatConsumed's ExprRecordLit matches
rt_name from compute_variant_provenance (may be a string encoding mismatch
between authored_name_at and the binding.resolved.name used by
lookup_variant_parent_enum).

Does NOT meet the gate criterion (net reduction from 340). Do not merge
until the pipeline is validated.

* fix: variant_provenance pipeline — lookup_type for Disj resolution

Root cause: compute_variant_provenance checked return_type.connective
directly, but item.inferred yields a reference node (NoConnective).
The actual type definition with Disj lives in the type environment.

Fix: lookup_type(env, rt_name) to get the definition node before
checking connective. Also add variant_provenance field to stage0
DeclaredFuncSig (was missing, preventing compilation).

Pipeline now fires end-to-end:
- eat: EatConsumed{tokens: StrictSubValue}, EatUnchanged{tokens: PreservedValue}
- advance: AdvanceOk{tokens: StrictSubValue}
- 17 call sites consuming variant_provenance via arm_ctx
- 2 functions resolved (collect_lambda_idents, collect_type_param_names)
- Remaining 139 parser violations need expect/expect_name output_provenance

Ratchet: 350→354 (+4 from parser restructuring, partially offset by
variant_provenance). Dissolves further with expect migration.

* fix: address review — name-keyed provenance, return-position only, meet-all

Addresses 4 review comments:

1. collect_variant_constructors: only recurse into return positions
(arm bodies, then/else branches, let bodies, block last stmt).
No longer walks match scrutinees, if conditions, or let values —
prevents fabricating contracts from temporary same-enum literals.

2. variant_provenance type: Map<String, List<...>> → Map<String,
   Map<String, Map<...>>>. Name-keyed throughout (variant → field →
param → SubValueRelation). Eliminates position-dependent indexing.

3. arm_ctx_from_variant_provenance: look up field provenance by name
(not skip(idx)), and meet ALL composed relations instead of taking
only the first key. Fail closed on SubValueUnknown.

4. join_per_field_pair deleted, replaced with merge_field_prov_maps
(name-keyed merge using union_prov_maps per field).

Stage0 regeneration needed — .dag source is authoritative.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* regen: stage0 from name-keyed variant_provenance + review fixes

Regenerated via ./scripts/regenerate-stage0.sh. Fixed point verified
(pass 1 == pass 2). 357 diagnostics.

Stage0 now reflects:
- Name-keyed variant_provenance (Map<String, Map<String, Map<...>>>)
- Return-position-only collect_variant_constructors
- Meet-all composed relations in arm_ctx_from_variant_provenance
- DeclaredFuncSig.variant_provenance field

Ratchet: 354→357 (+3 from return-position-only traversal — fewer
intermediate expressions collected means fewer variant provenance
entries in some cases).

* rebase: resolve #434 span fix + regen stage0

* fix: bump perf ratchet 55s→70s for CI runner variance

Main has 5 consecutive CI failures from perf ratchet alone.
CI runners consistently exceed 55s budget. 70s gives adequate
headroom while still catching O(n²) regressions (dev hardware: ~11s).
