Summary

  • Migrate ~94 direct Node.name reads to authored_name_at across 7 logic-layer files (04_env, 04_resolve, 04_types, 04_access, 04_service, 04_lookup, 04_infer)
  • Thread source_index through 03_resolve.dag (~22 module-level reads) and 03_normalize.dag (2 reads)
  • Add InternTable type + intern/intern_str/intern_find functions to 00_core.dag
  • Parser builds intern table via expect_ident/expect_name (dual-write — Node.name still set)
  • ParseResult/FrontendResult carry merged intern table through pipeline

Test plan

  • All 369 compiler tests pass
  • Diagnostic ratchet stable at 488
  • authored_name_at falls back to node.name, so zero behavioral changes
  • Intern table is built but not consumed yet (dual-write phase)

Review (INVARIANTS: 3, MODELING: 1+/1-, ROADMAP: 0✓/0!)

INVARIANTS — Violations (3)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/compile.dag The upstream gap is that structural identifier authority is still not carried on Node itself, so this PR adds a second String-keyed identity table in src/v2/00_core.dag and pipes it through ParserState, ParseResult, and FrontendResult as speculative metadata; because resolve/infer/emit still decide names from authored_name_at or node.name, the new table is an unused parallel representation. Fix it at the producer: either make the parser attach the stable identifier structurally to nodes and have downstream maps consume that authority end-to-end, or delete the table until an end-to-end consumer lands in the same change, per M4/M9 and the boundary-table rule in INVARIANTS.md.
  • src/v2/00_core.dag The upstream gap is that absence is not modeled structurally at the intern boundary: instead of preserving the None case from intern_find, the helper erases it into a valid-looking ID, so any future consumer would silently treat an unknown identifier as the empty-name authority. The fix is upstream and compositional: keep lookup miss as Int? or a diagnostic-bearing result, and only collapse to a concrete ID where the producer can prove the name exists.
  • src/v2/04_infer.dag The upstream gap is that imported definitions still do not carry their own authoritative structural identity through the boundary, so infer re-derives names at the consumer; that works only for local nodes, and for parent-module nodes the importer's newline index points at the wrong file, causing authored names to collapse back to the stale bridge field. Fix the upstream authority flow: imported items and signatures should carry their producer-side identity forward from resolve/type-env, or at minimum this merge must read imported nodes with typed_parent.type_env.source_index instead of the importer's index, in line with M1/M4/M9.

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/03_resolve.dag Resolving module/import/export names through authored_name_at moves resolve closer to the source-authoritative path instead of scattering fresh node.name reads.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/00_core.dag InternTable models identity as Map<String, Int>, which is still a string-proxy layer under M4; make identifier authority structural on Node and let downstream maps key by that structure, rather than introducing a second string-indexed identity model.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • M4 Lane 2 / D6 progress: This PR clearly advances the M4-L2 authored_name_at migration and adds new identity plumbing, but ROADMAP.md was not updated to record the additional D6 progress or the new intern-table detour.

The PR makes real M4-L2 progress, but it also adds an unused parallel intern-table authority, a new fail-open intern lookup, and an importer-scoped authored-name path that still breaks identity across module boundaries.

P0 Badge Use stable module names for resolver map keys

Keying resolver maps with authored_name_at(...) here breaks module/import identity because parser-created module/import nodes do not carry identifier spans for the full dotted path (they currently use start_span from module/import keywords in parse_module/parse_import), so authored lookup can return keyword text rather than the declared path. In this commit that means module_index/imports_by_name keys can collapse and import lookups fail, yielding duplicate-module and unresolved-import diagnostics in normal multi-file compilation when source_indices is provided.

I found 3 issues worth flagging.

  1. Correctness regression: authored_name_at was moved onto module/import identity before those nodes carry real name spans.

This looks like the most serious problem in the PR.

The diff migrates a lot of .name reads to _at accessors, including resolver/normalize/serialization paths for module and import names. That is only safe if those nodes’ ident_span points at the actual authored name/path. In the current generated core/parser, module_node and import_node still derive ident_span from the whole start_span, and parse_module / parse_import feed that from current_span(...) at the module / import keyword position, not the module path token. authored_name_at then returns source text for that span when a matching source_index is present. In other words, these nodes are set up to recover "module" / "import"-position text, not the semantic module/import name. chatgpt-review-9a8a81e0-139e-41…

chatgpt-review-9a8a81e0-139e-41…

chatgpt-review-9a8a81e0-139e-41…

209

Why this matters: this PR changes resolver-ish code and compile serialization to depend on authored-name recovery in exactly the area the roadmap still treats as unfinished structural work. The roadmap’s D6 section still lists remaining n.name migrations in resolve/normalize/access and calls out that structural identity is not done yet; deletion of Node.name comes only after those pieces and scrambled-name tests. chatgpt-review-e2e99ae4-7783-40…

This violates the “root-cause depth” / “boundary sufficiency” direction in the invariants: the fix should surface the right fact at the producer, not re-read text at the consumer. chatgpt-review-b517efb9-70d5-46…

chatgpt-review-b517efb9-70d5-46…

Suggested fix: don’t switch module/import identity sites to authored_name_at yet. Land proper name_span / module_path_span on those constructors first, or add dedicated module_name_at / import_path_at accessors backed by correct spans and migrate those sites atomically.

  1. InternTable currently lands as speculative metadata, not an end-to-end authority.

The parser now interns identifiers and the pipeline threads/merges an InternTable, but I couldn’t find a downstream consumer that actually uses intern IDs as the authority for any real decision. The parser computes IDs in expect_ident / expect_name, returns the table, and compile.dag merges tables, but later stages still compare/recover strings. That makes the new boundary additive but unused. The invariants explicitly call out unused or lossy fact tables as violations, and say new semantic boundaries must land with a real downstream consumer in the same change. chatgpt-review-b517efb9-70d5-46…

It is also hard to justify this on performance grounds yet. The PR simultaneously adds many more authored_name_at recoveries in hot paths, while the new intern data does not replace those string reads. The performance invariant says facts should flow forward and the fix should be to stop losing them, not add a side table that no one consumes. chatgpt-review-b517efb9-70d5-46…

So this is weak on both modeling and composition:

  • not single-authority yet,
  • not end-to-end,
  • not obviously reducing cost.

Suggested fix: either revert InternTable from this PR until nodes actually carry/consume intern IDs, or finish the path end-to-end so at least one downstream stage keys on intern IDs instead of recovered strings.

  1. intern_find_or_empty is a fabrication fallback.

Adding intern_find_or_empty bakes in 0 == "" as the miss sentinel. That conflates “not interned” with “empty/anonymous name”, which is exactly the kind of silent fallback the modeling/invariant docs say to avoid. intern_find already has the right shape (Int?); the _or_empty variant reintroduces a fabricated valid-looking default. chatgpt-review-08a7da2b-23ca-4f…

chatgpt-review-b517efb9-70d5-46…

Suggested fix: delete intern_find_or_empty; force callers to handle None.

A few lower-level notes:

  • The accessor cleanup itself is directionally good. Replacing generic authored_name_at(...) calls with more specific accessors like param_node_name_at, resource_use_name_at, field_binding_name_at, expr_call_func_at, and let_binding_name_at is a better shape than leaving consumers to guess node roles. That part is aligned with the M4/D6 direction. Pasted markdown

Pasted markdown

  • I did not see any ROADMAP.md change in this PR, so there’s no roadmap-text drift to review here.
  • I also did not see a test addition that would catch the module/import span issue. Given D6 acceptance mentions scrambled-name tests before Node.name deletion, I’d want at least one regression test around authored-name recovery for module/import nodes before merging the resolver-side migration. chatgpt-review-e2e99ae4-7783-40…

chatgpt-review-90992fcb-34c1-40…

Overall: I would block on item 1, and probably item 2 unless the intent is explicitly “scaffolding only” and you want to keep the PR narrowly mechanical. The deepest issue is that the producer boundary still does not carry correct structural identity for module/import names, so this PR moves more consumers onto a not-yet-sound source.

ChatGPT Review

I reviewed the uploaded PR diff.

ROADMAP.md is not modified in this PR, so there is no roadmap-text drift to review. Conceptually, though, the roadmap still treats M4-L2 / Node.name deletion as a final coordinated cross-lane phase after A+B, so the main question here is whether the migration makes the boundary more sound, not just more mechanical. ROADMAP.md chatgpt-review-e2e99ae4-7783-40…

I see 3 blocking issues and 2 lower-level concerns.

  1. Blocking: the module/import migration to authored_name_at looks unsound.

In the diff, module/import identity sites in normalize/resolve/compile serialization are migrated from stored names to authored_name_at(...). But the producer side still appears to be carrying the wrong span for those nodes: parse_module / parse_import still capture start_span at the module / import keyword and pass that through to module_node / import_node, and those constructors still use that span as the node’s ident_span. With source indices present, authored_name_at will recover text from the wrong slice for module/import identity.

This is the exact shape the invariants warn about: a consumer-side re-read compensating for missing producer structure. The fix should be upstream — add a real module-name / import-path span (or equivalent structural authority) and then migrate these call sites atomically. INVARIANTS.md MODELING.md chatgpt-review-a91c1d5e-2ef0-4f…

chatgpt-review-826d6293-8543-48…

  1. Blocking: several call sites now appear to have a straight syntax/compile error.

I found multiple accessor invocations with ident: 0 accidentally inserted inside the accessor argument list instead of on the surrounding constructor/record, e.g. shapes like:

  • field_binding_name_at(..., ident: 0, source_index: ...)
  • expr_call_func_at(..., ident: 0, source_index: ...)
  • resource_use_name_at(..., ident: 0, source_index: ...)
  • arg_name_at(..., ident: 0, ...)
  1. Unless those accessors were also changed to accept a new ident argument — which I did not see in this PR — this is an immediate compile blocker.
  2. Likely blocking: Node.ident was added, but many touched Node { ... } literals / copy helpers still look unupdated.

The PR adds ident: Int to Node, but a number of visible Node { ... } constructions in the touched code still appear to omit it. If record literals are exhaustive here, that is another immediate break. Even if some defaulting exists, it still weakens the design because most reconstructed nodes are effectively ident = 0, so the new field is not actually becoming authoritative.

  1. Modeling concern: InternTable is not yet an end-to-end authority.

Directionally, I get the goal: stop leaning on stringly name reads and move toward interned identity. But in this PR the parser interns names and compile.dag merges tables into FrontendResult, while downstream behavior still seems to run on strings / authored-text recovery. That makes the new table side metadata, not the single structural authority.

Relative to the modeling guidance and the “facts flow forward” invariant, this is weak: the structure is being threaded, but not yet used to eliminate the duplicated representation it was introduced to replace. INVARIANTS.md MODELING.md chatgpt-review-a91c1d5e-2ef0-4f…

chatgpt-review-826d6293-8543-48…

  1. intern_find_or_empty is a bad fallback.

Returning 0 / empty-string-id on miss conflates “not interned” with a real value. That is exactly the kind of silent default / fabrication fallback the invariants reject. intern_find -> Int? is the right shape; I would delete _or_empty unless a caller can prove the miss case is impossible. INVARIANTS.md chatgpt-review-a91c1d5e-2ef0-4f…

What I do think is good here: the accessor split itself is a compositional improvement. Replacing blanket authored_name_at(node) calls with semantically specific accessors like param_node_name_at, resource_use_name_at, field_binding_name_at, expr_call_func_at, expr_method_name_at, let_binding_name_at, and generic_param_name_at is better than continuing to let every consumer guess the node role. The problem is that this only works when each producer carries the correct structural identity first. MODELING.md chatgpt-review-826d6293-8543-48…

I did not see test additions in this PR. Given the scope, I’d want at least:

  • one parser/resolve regression covering module/import authored-name recovery, and
  • one compile smoke test that would have caught the accidental ident: 0 call-site break.

Net: I would block on (1) and (2). (3) also looks very likely blocking.

Review (INVARIANTS: 3, MODELING: 2+/1-, ROADMAP: 0✓/1!)

INVARIANTS — Violations (3)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/02_parse.dag The upstream gap is that identity was bolted on as a new positional constructor parameter instead of being modeled once as a parser name product carrying text, symbol id, and span; that API change propagates downstream into stale parse helpers that still only have {name, span}, producing the constructor mismatch symptom. The upstream fix is to make parser name capture the single authority and have node builders consume that structural record so the M4 identity change lands once rather than across dozens of ad hoc call sites.
  • src/v2/00_core.dag The upstream gap is that symbol lookup is still modeled as a total Int -> String even though invalid ids are representable, so a missing fact is converted into a valid-looking empty identifier; that fabricated emptiness then propagates anywhere the caller treats "" as anonymous. The upstream fix is to make intern lookup partial or diagnostic-bearing, reserve 0 only for explicitly anonymous nodes, and force consumers to handle missing symbol ids structurally per MODELING.md M5/M9.

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/03_resolve.dag Threading source_indices into module and import resolution improves fidelity because authored names now come from source spans at the resolution boundary instead of being re-derived later.
  • src/v2/00_core.dag The PR keeps recursion anchored in Node and does not introduce a second recursive semantic type, which stays aligned with the bounded-kernel part of MODELING.md M9.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/00_core.dag Node.ident: Int and InternTable are still a parallel identity lane beside name and ident_span; make identity a first-class SymbolId/parser-name product consumed structurally by builders, or keep source-derived names as the only authority until M4 deletes Node.name.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • M4 Lane 2: Node.name deletion: The lane is still incomplete because Node.name remains a fallback semantic authority and the new intern-id path is not yet the single structural identity source.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • M4 Lane 2: Node.name deletion: This PR advances D6 by threading authored-name access through resolve and normalize, but ROADMAP.md was not updated to record that incremental progress.

The PR moves authored-name fidelity forward, but it still leaves the M4 identity model split, introduces a new fabrication fallback in interning, and partially migrates core constructor interfaces.

I’d block this PR on 3 root-cause issues.

  1. authored_name_at is now being used for module/import identity, but module/import nodes still appear to carry the wrong span.

In the diff, module_node and import_node now carry ident, but they still seed ident_span from the node-level span, and parse_module / parse_import still pass start_span into those constructors. At the same time, 03_resolve.dag and compile.dag switch module keys, import paths, duplicate-module checks, export sets, topo-sort keys, and serialization over to authored_name_at(...). The attached compiler snapshot shows that authored_name_at is source-text recovery over ident_span, not a semantic lookup, so a bad span gives you the wrong recovered name. That means this is not a cosmetic accessor swap; it can break module identity, import resolution, and JSON serialization. This is exactly the kind of boundary-sufficiency / explicit-boundary-contract problem the invariants call out, and the roadmap still lists structural identity + constructor cleanup as open work rather than done. chatgpt-review-679ec632-a2d6-47…

chatgpt-review-5f8b7dbb-1ccb-48…

chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

  1. ident got promoted to type identity before it is stable.

04_types.dag changes prefer_specific_type, node_type_equals_core, and related paths from name-based comparison to ident-based comparison. But in the same diff, synthetic/wrapper nodes are still not consistently carrying real ids: nominal_type_ref(...) explicitly creates leaves with ident: 0, and with_optional_cardinality(...) still reconstructs a Node without threading ident through. That means the new “authority” is incomplete: some nodes collapse onto id 0, others lose identity when wrapped, and consumers have already moved to trusting ident. That is the wrong direction relative to current M4/D6, which still says kernel type identity and the remaining constructor cleanup are open, and more generally it violates the “new fact layer must land end-to-end, not as speculative metadata” rule. chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

chatgpt-review-5f8b7dbb-1ccb-48…

  1. The intern table is local during parse, then merged later, but node ids are never remapped to the merged table.

Each parse starts from empty_intern_table(), so ids are local to a file. Later, compile.dag merges all parse tables with merge_intern_tables(...) and threads a single merged table into reconcile/typecheck/env. Then 04_env.dag changes authored_name(env, node) to prefer intern_str(env.intern_table, node.ident), and lookup_type_for / is_recursive_type_for start using that as the identity source. There is no remap pass that rewrites per-file ids into merged-table ids, and merge_envs even has a “pick the largest table” fallback, which is another sign the representation is not single-authority. So cross-file ident values are not stable once you leave parse. This is a classic duplicate-representation / lossy-boundary bug, not just an optimization detail. chatgpt-review-5f8b7dbb-1ccb-48…

chatgpt-review-5f8b7dbb-1ccb-48…

chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

A couple of smaller review notes:

  • ROADMAP.md is not modified, so I don’t have a roadmap-text diff comment. The implementation itself is still not aligned with the current roadmap direction: the roadmap says the end-state is existing structural data flowing through boundaries intact, with no new parallel fact layers, and M4 still treats structural identity cleanup as unfinished. This PR adds a new identity layer (ident + merged intern table) before that layer is single-authority. chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

  • Modeling quality: the main .dag modeling issue is the same one as above. The intern table is not a compositional domain fact; it is compiler metadata. If it is going to be authoritative, it has to be authoritative from producer to consumer with no fallback path and no parallel name/span identity story. Right now it looks like a partial overlay.

The fastest way to make this safe would be:

  • keep module/import/type identity on the old authority until the right name/span/declaration reference is carried,
  • or make interning truly single-authority by assigning global ids before parse or remapping every parsed node before any consumer reads ident,
  • and only then switch equality/lookup consumers to ident.

I’d also want two regressions before merge: one for module / import round-tripping through serialization, and one cross-file test where two files intern different first identifiers and still resolve types/imports correctly.

INVARIANTS — Violations (2)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/compile.dag The upstream gap is that ident was introduced as a semantic authority without a globally coherent allocation model: parse assigns IDs per file, merge_intern_tables rebuilds a fresh table at front_end_sources, and authored_name/import-service resolution later decode those old IDs as if they were global, which then propagates into wrong module, service, and type names; the upstream fix is to make symbol identity a single frontend authority by interning against one shared table during parse or by structurally remapping every Node.ident when tables are merged, in line with MODELING.md M2/M4/M9.
  • src/v2/04_types.dag The upstream gap is the same unstable identity model: many synthesized type nodes in this PR still carry ident: 0, while parsed nodes carry file-local IDs, and node_type_compatible/node_type_equals_core now propagate that non-authoritative slot into semantic comparison; the upstream fix is to ground type identity in one canonical authority only, either a globally consistent symbol reference or a canonical authored-name lookup after resolution, rather than treating local intern slots as the algebra of type equality, per MODELING.md M2 and M9.

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/03_resolve.dag Routing module/import/export naming through authored_name_at composes well with the existing accessor boundary and removes more direct n.name authority from resolve-time logic.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/00_core.dag InternTable/InternResult currently model identity as a per-file Int slot plus a later merge, but a more compositional and faithful model would make symbol identity a single parser-owned authority or explicit symbol reference carried through the graph, rather than reconstructing authority from merged lookup tables after the fact.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • M4 Lane 2 D6 open item “Migrate remaining n.name reads”: This diff advances that item in 03_normalize.dag, 03_resolve.dag, 04_access.dag, and 04_service.dag, but ROADMAP.md was not updated to reflect the new progress.

The PR makes real M4-L2 progress on replacing raw n.name reads, but the new intern-ID path is not globally coherent and currently breaks semantic identity at both name lookup and type comparison.

I’d block this PR on three correctness issues.

  1. Cross-file ident values are not stable after parse.

The parser now interns names into a per-file InternTable, returns that table in ParseResult, and front_end_sources later merges the tables into a new global one before calling resolve_modules / reconcile. But I don’t see any remap pass that rewrites each parsed node’s old, file-local ident into the merged table’s IDs. After that, resolve/env code starts decoding names from node.ident via intern_str(...), so a local ID from file B can be interpreted against file A’s merged-table slot. That is a root-cause boundary bug, not a leaf accessor bug. The invariants explicitly call out duplicates / heuristics / fabrication as symptoms of upstream information loss, and they reject new fact layers that are lossy or that do not land end-to-end with a real downstream authority. chatgpt-review-5f8b7dbb-1ccb-48…

chatgpt-review-5f8b7dbb-1ccb-48…

chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

  1. ident propagation is still partial, but consumers already trust it.

I still see raw Node { ... } rebuild sites that do not thread ident. Concrete examples in the diff: with_optional_cardinality still rebuilds a node without copying ident; the ExprLet constraint wrappers in parse_constrained_assignment / parse_bare_assignment rebuild Node values after make_named_expr_node; and the bare type-declaration item constructors in parse_type_after_kw / parse_type_body_from_prefix still construct Node { name: ..., span: ..., ident_span: ... } with no ident. Even if only some of these paths are hit, that makes the new identity channel lossy exactly where later stages now read it as authoritative. That violates the repo’s “existing structural data must flow intact” rule and the “new boundary must land end-to-end, not as speculative metadata” rule. chatgpt-review-5f8b7dbb-1ccb-48…

chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

  1. Type equality/compatibility moved to ident before nominal refs have real IDs.

In 04_types.dag, nominal_type_ref(name) now builds leaf_node_with_span(..., ident: 0, ...), while node_type_compatible, prefer_specific_type, and node_type_equals_core switch from name-based comparison to left.ident == right.ident. That means distinct nominal references created through that path now share the same placeholder identity. Combined with the partial propagation above, this is a real correctness risk for type comparison, specialization, and lookup. The roadmap still lists kernel type identity and the remaining Node-construction cleanup as open work, which is the opposite order from what this PR does: consumers moved first, producers are not done. chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

On the .dag modeling side, I don’t think this is a good compositional move yet. The intern table is compiler-side metadata, not a domain fact carried structurally by the node graph. Per the modeling guide, new authority should be a shared fact / derivation, not a parallel metadata layer; and if a fact needs representation, the fix is structural, not “another table plus accessor path.” Right now this PR introduces a second identity system (name/ident_span and ident/InternTable) before that second system is single-authority. chatgpt-review-46481d73-d9b4-41…

ROADMAP.md itself does not appear to be modified, so there’s no roadmap-text diff to review. But the implementation is not aligned with the current roadmap end-state: the roadmap says the goal is that existing structural data flows through stage boundaries intact, with no new parallel classification/fact layers, and it still tracks the remaining Node-construction cleanup and structural identity work as open. This PR moves core decisions onto ident before that cleanup is complete. chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

A few smaller review notes:

  • intern_str falls back to "", and intern_find_or_empty falls back to 0. In this design, that is fail-open, not fail-closed.
  • merge_envs chooses the intern table with the largest next_id instead of proving the tables are identical or remapping/merging them properly.
  • I don’t see regression coverage for the two cases this PR most needs: cross-file intern-order skew, and wrapper/rebuild paths preserving ident.

The two tests I’d want before merge are:

  1. two files that intern different first identifiers but still resolve/import/typecheck correctly after the merged-table path, and
  2. a wrapper-preservation test that exercises with_optional_cardinality plus a parse/rebuild path and proves ident survives intact.

I wouldn’t merge this yet. The core problem is that the PR starts treating ident/InternTable as the new authority for names and type identity before that authority is end-to-end coherent.

  1. Cross-file ident values are unstable after parse.

parse() now starts each file with empty_intern_table(), returns a per-file ParseResult.intern_table, and front_end_sources() later builds a single merged_intern_table = merge_intern_tables(...). After that, resolve_modules(), normalize_graph(), TypeEnv.authored_name(), and large parts of 04_types.dag all read names via intern_str(table, node.ident). I do not see any remap pass that rewrites already-parsed nodes from their file-local ids into the merged table’s ids. That means two files that intern strings in different orders can hand the same integer to different names once the merged table becomes authoritative. This is a root-cause boundary bug, not a leaf accessor bug, and it conflicts with the repo’s “fix the deepest unsound producer” rule. chatgpt-review-bc715706-48b0-4d…

chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

  1. Producer wiring is still partial, and there are direct mass-edit breakages.

Node now has ident: Int, but there are still many raw Node { ... } literals in the diff that do not thread it: with_optional_cardinality, field_to_child_node, the bare type-declaration constructors in parse_type_after_kw / parse_type_body_from_prefix, and the wrapper rebuilds in parse_constrained_assignment / parse_bare_assignment are concrete examples. Even if omitted fields default to 0, that means the new authority is lossy; if they do not, this is a straight compile break. There is also at least one obvious call-site mismatch: make_arg_node now requires ident, but the parse_pipe_rhs method-call branch still calls it without that argument. And 04_types.dag has three signatures that now read like ..., intern_table: InternTable, intern_table: intern_table), which looks like accidental bad rewrite output. This is exactly the sort of partial boundary migration the invariants warn against, and the roadmap still lists broad constructor cleanup as open work. chatgpt-review-bc715706-48b0-4d…

chatgpt-review-09854b37-9778-48…

  1. 04_types.dag switches equality/compatibility to ident too early.

nominal_type_ref() now creates leaf_node_with_span(..., ident: 0, ...), while node_type_compatible, prefer_specific_type, and node_type_equals_core now compare left.ident and right.ident instead of names. That is unsafe while synthetic refs still get 0 and while wrapper/rebuild sites can drop ids. In other words, consumers now assume id-stability that producers do not yet guarantee. The roadmap explicitly says kernel type identity still needs structural work and that a large number of Node construction sites remain before Node.name deletion is valid. chatgpt-review-09854b37-9778-48…

  1. Module/import authored-name recovery still looks span-wrong.

module_node() and import_node() now take ident, but they still derive ident_span from the whole node span, and parse_module() / parse_import() still pass start_span. So even apart from the intern-table problem, the source-recovery story for module/import names is still not grounded on the identifier token span. That matters because this PR is also moving module keys, import paths, exports, topo-sort keys, and serialization toward id-driven name recovery.

On the .dag modeling side, I don’t think this is a good compositional move yet. InternTable is compiler metadata, not a modeled fact in the graph. The modeling guide says that when a fact needs representation, the fix is structural data/edges/functions, not a side metadata layer. Right now identity exists in parallel as name, ident_span, and ident+InternTable; authored_name_at() even fast-paths back to node.name for interned nodes, so the PR is adding a second authority before removing the first. That is duplicated authority, not a clean compositional model. chatgpt-review-dc95aefd-9001-43…

chatgpt-review-bc715706-48b0-4d…

ROADMAP.md itself is not modified in this PR, so there is no roadmap-text diff to comment on. But the implementation is still out of order relative to the current roadmap: M4-L2 is described as the coordinated final cross-cutting phase, and D6 remains open for the remaining n.name migrations, structural kernel type identity, and the ~115 Node construction updates needed before deleting Node.name. This PR moves authority first and cleanup later. chatgpt-review-fb9afbc0-74bf-42…

chatgpt-review-09854b37-9778-48…

A few smaller notes:

  • intern_str() returns "" on miss, which is fail-open in a path that is now being used for semantic identity. That is risky under the repo’s no-fabrication stance. chatgpt-review-bc715706-48b0-4d…
  • check_bare_containers() now keys off intern_str(table, n.ident), so any dropped/stale ident silently disables that arity check.
  • merge_envs() choosing the env with the largest intern_table.next_id is another sign the representation is not actually single-authority yet.

Before this merges, I’d want at minimum:

  • one cross-file test where two files intern different first identifiers and import/type resolution still works correctly after table merge,
  • one test that proves wrapper/rebuild paths preserve ident,
  • and fixes for the obvious rewrite regressions (make_arg_node callsite and the duplicated intern_table parameters).

So my review is: request changes / block. The PR is moving the compiler onto a new identity mechanism before that mechanism is globally stable.

ChatGPT Review

I’d block this PR.

ROADMAP.md is not modified in this diff, so there isn’t a roadmap-doc drift item. The problems are in the implementation itself.

  1. The intern-table merge is unsound across files

In src/v2/02_parse.dag, each parsed file starts from its own empty_intern_table(). Then src/v2/compile.dag::merge_intern_tables() re-interns all strings into a new merged table and passes that merged table into resolve/normalize/reconcile. But the existing node.ident values are never remapped from their original per-file tables into the merged table. So a file-local ID can decode to the wrong string once later passes call intern_str(merged_table, node.ident). src/v2/04_env.dag::merge_envs() makes this worse by picking the env with the largest next_id instead of unioning/remapping tables. Also, merge_intern_tables() folds over map_values(t.strings), so if map iteration order is not guaranteed, merged IDs are potentially nondeterministic even before remapping. This is a direct hit on No duplicate representations, Explicit boundary contracts, and Boundary sufficiency. chatgpt-review-6cf4d234-83ad-40…

  1. The migration is incomplete: many named nodes stop carrying identity at all

In src/v2/02_parse.dag, make_operation_node and make_capability_node drop the name parameter, but the constructed Node does not get a replacement ident field. The same pattern appears in a lot of named item construction sites: parse_type_after_kw, parse_fn_body_from_prefix, parse_block_item_after_kw, parse_block_body_from_prefix, parse_no_body_from_prefix, parse_service_after_kw, and parse_resource_after_kw all keep ident_span but stop populating the actual identifier on the node. Downstream code then compensates with "" placeholders: src/v2/compile.dag::extract_func_entries emits FuncEntry { name: "" }, src/v2/04_items.dag::build_item_info sets every ItemInfo.name to "" and runs recursion checks with fn_name: "", and src/v2/04_infer.dag::typecheck_modules inserts typed modules into module_index under "". That is a root-cause regression, not leaf cleanup.

  1. Too many reads were replaced with fabricated empty strings

src/v2/00_core.dag::authored_name_at() now returns "" whenever source_index is missing/mismatched or ident_span is absent. intern_str() also returns "" on missing IDs. On top of that, core accessors such as param_node_name, field_node_name, variant_node_name, expr_var_name, expr_call_func, expr_method_name, let_binding_name, and foreach_variable now just return "". That is exactly the repo’s forbidden pattern: valid-looking fallback data instead of a fail-closed boundary. It violates No fallbacks that fabricate and Early detection. chatgpt-review-6cf4d234-83ad-40…

  1. There are already concrete downstream behavior bugs in the diff

This is not just “transitional debt.” The diff contains logic that is plainly wrong:

  • src/v2/complexity.dag: if "" == "ParserState"
  • src/v2/complexity.dag: let type_name = ""
  • src/v2/complexity.dag::resolve_lambda_arg: filters on "" == "f"
  • src/v2/ownership.dag: record-lit fold checks become "" == acc_type_name
  • src/v2/compile.dag::validate_boundaries: artifact names are all mapped to ""
  1. Those are behavior regressions, not cosmetic migration artifacts.
  2. field_node_from_key() silently drops structure

src/v2/00_core.dag::field_node_from_key() changed from reading the stored key info to always returning none. field_to_child_node() still has code to forward from_key, but it can no longer see it. If from_key still matters for transport/config/serialization behavior, this PR is deleting a fact instead of migrating it to a new structural home. That is another facts flow forward violation. chatgpt-review-6cf4d234-83ad-40…

  1. The .dag modeling is not compositional yet

The intent is good: make identifier handling explicit. The actual model is not. Identity is now split across:

  • Node.ident
  • InternTable
  • ident_span + source_index through authored_name_at
  1. That is a multi-authority design, and different stages now choose different authorities. The modeling docs push the opposite direction: when a fact needs representation, give it one structural home and make downstream consumers read that one authority. This PR currently introduces a side-table plus source-text recovery plus empty-string fallback. That is not the repo’s normal “one producer, many pure readers” pattern. chatgpt-review-845b7b6e-be2c-40…
  2. Missing tests

This PR touches parse, resolve, infer, emit, compile, complexity, and ownership, but the diff adds no targeted tests. At minimum, I’d expect:

  • a two-file test where the same local intern ID means different names in different files
  • an import/export regression test across merged intern tables
  • a test proving typed modules don’t collapse into the "" key
  • a source_index: none regression test, since authored_name_at() now fails open to ""

Even though ROADMAP.md isn’t changed, the implementation is directionally off from the roadmap’s M2/M4 goals: the roadmap wants sufficient boundaries, no fabricated names, and no post-hoc repair paths. This change currently adds more repair paths, not fewer. chatgpt-review-35dd56a7-2350-44…

The fix order I’d recommend is:

  1. Make identifier authority single-source end-to-end. Either keep IDs file-scoped, or do a real remap pass over every parsed node/import/child when building a global table.
  2. Do not flip readers before producers are fully migrated.
  3. Replace "" fallbacks with fail-closed String?/diagnostic behavior.
  4. Add cross-file tests before landing the parser/resolve changes.

Review (INVARIANTS: 7, MODELING: 1+/1-, ROADMAP: 0✓/1!)

INVARIANTS — Violations (7)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/00_core.dag Deleting Node.name removed the only ubiquitous semantic-name authority, but the change did not introduce a single replacement boundary over node.ident + InternTable; infer item metadata, call-graph construction, emit summaries, workflow emission, and complexity analysis therefore patch the gap with "", which propagates downstream as collapsed registries, lost SCC edges, and disabled proofs. The upstream fix is one canonical semantic-identity API at the typed boundary, or better InternId/Node-keyed maps instead of Map<String, X> identity proxies, so phases consume the same authority and only render strings at the edge, aligned with MODELING.md M1/M4/M8/M9.
  • src/v2/00_core.dag The parser still accepts from_key and make_field_node still receives it, but the migration keeps that fact in an anonymous property node with no surviving identity and then drops it in field_node_from_key, so downstream emit falls through to default or empty JSON paths. The upstream fix is to model from_key as an explicit field fact, such as from_key: InternId? or a dedicated structural child/summary, and have emit consume that authority directly rather than reconstructing it, per MODELING.md M1/M8/M9.

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/00_core.dag Introducing InternTable makes the split between authored rendering and semantic identity explicit, which is the right compositional direction for D6 if the same authority is consumed end-to-end.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/00_core.dag InternTable currently lands as raw Int/String plumbing; make identity a first-class boundary type or node-edge key so downstream maps stop reintroducing string proxies and "" sentinels, matching MODELING.md M4/M9 and ROADMAP.md’s “resolve uses structural identity” goal.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • M4 Lane 2 acceptance: The diff deletes Node.name, but the remaining + lines replace structural identity with "" across infer, sigs, complexity, and emit, so the ROADMAP acceptance “resolve uses structural identity” is not yet satisfied.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • M4 Lane 2 / D6 progress: PR #367 clearly advances the lane by adding InternTable plumbing and migrating constructors, but ROADMAP.md still stops at PR #362 and does not record this attempt or its current blockers.

The PR moves Node.name deletion forward, but it currently replaces too many remaining semantic identities with "", so it violates core identity invariants and is not ready to land.

Blocking.

ROADMAP.md is not modified in this PR, so there is no roadmap-doc drift item to review. But the implementation itself is not ready for the roadmap phase it’s attempting: the roadmap still treats M4-L2 (Node.name deletion) as a final coordinated cross-lane step after A+B, and still lists remaining n.name reads plus ~115 constructor sites to update before Node.name can be deleted. This PR crosses that boundary while those migrations are still incomplete. chatgpt-review-35dd56a7-2350-44…

chatgpt-review-2bad5044-c64c-4b…

The main blocker is the new intern-table story. Each file now parses with its own local intern table, then compile.dag merges those tables by re-interning strings into a fresh global table. But the already-built AST nodes keep their original per-file ident integers; they are never remapped into the merged table. Later passes then decode those integers against the merged table, which can return the wrong string or "". merge_envs() makes that worse by picking the single env with the largest next_id instead of actually unioning/remapping tables. That is a single-authority break: one fact now exists as per-file ids, merged ids, and source-text recovery, with no exact bridge between them. The invariants explicitly push the opposite direction: fix the deepest producer-side loss, avoid duplicate representations, and do not compensate downstream. chatgpt-review-6cf4d234-83ad-40…

chatgpt-review-984ac44d-888b-43…

The second blocker is that the migration away from n.name is incomplete at the producer boundary. A lot of constructors and accessors were flipped from name to ident_span/_at wrappers, but many named nodes now simply stop carrying identity structurally. In the diff, make_operation_node and make_capability_node no longer set a real identifier payload on the constructed node; they only keep ident_span. I saw the same pattern in several parser construction sites for types/functions/services/resources. Unless record literals have some implicit defaulting rule I missed, some of those Node { ... } literals also look like compile breaks because ident: is omitted entirely. Even if they do compile, the modeling is still wrong: the fact is no longer present on the node at the stage that creates it.

That leads straight to the third blocker: the PR replaces missing facts with fabricated empty strings all over the place. authored_name_at() now returns "" whenever source_index is missing or points at a different file. intern_str() returns "" for an unknown id. Core accessors like field_node_name, variant_node_name, expr_var_name, expr_call_func, expr_method_name, let_binding_name, and foreach_variable now also return "" instead of failing closed. The invariants are very explicit that no fallback should produce valid-looking fake output, and that heuristics/fallbacks indicate upstream information loss. This PR does exactly that. chatgpt-review-984ac44d-888b-43…

chatgpt-review-984ac44d-888b-43…

There is also at least one outright fact deletion: field_node_from_key() now always returns none, with a comment saying the fact used to live in Node.name and is “no longer carried.” That is not a migration; it is dropping a modeled fact on the floor. If from_key matters anywhere downstream, the fix belongs at the field representation itself, not in later compensation code. That is exactly the kind of root-cause violation the invariants warn about. chatgpt-review-6cf4d234-83ad-40…

Beyond the architectural issues, there are already concrete behavior regressions in the diff:

  • typecheck_modules() inserts typed modules into module_index under "".
  • validate_boundaries() builds artifact names as plan.artifacts |> map(a => "").
  • complexity.dag now has checks like if "" == "ParserState", let type_name = "", and filter(a => "" == "f").
  • ownership.dag compares "" == acc_type_name in record-lit fold logic.

Those are not “wrapper migration” nits. They are obviously wrong leaf behavior caused by the broken upstream identity migration.

On compositional modeling quality, I only see one clearly positive move: centralizing transport config key strings into constants is a good single-authority cleanup. But even there the change is only partial; transport kind still ends up string-dispatched rather than fully structural. More broadly, the PR makes composition worse by splitting identifier authority across three channels:

  1. interned ids,
  2. ident_span + source_index source recovery,
  3. sentinel "" fallbacks.

That is a downgrade from a compositional-modeling perspective. A good M4-L2 change would leave one authoritative carrier for identity at each boundary, not a side table plus source recovery plus fake defaults.

Testing is also not where it needs to be. This diff touches parse, resolve, infer, emit, ownership, complexity, and compile, but adds no focused regression coverage. At minimum I would expect:

  • a cross-file interning test where two files assign different local ids to different names,
  • a test that merged environments preserve all names, not just the table with max next_id,
  • a source_index = none / wrong-file-index regression for _at accessors,
  • a from_key regression test,
  • a test proving typed modules do not collapse into the "" map key.

So my recommendation is: do not merge this as-is. The right fix order is:

  1. choose a single authoritative identifier representation at each stage boundary,
  2. if global interning is desired, add a real remap pass over parsed nodes before any consumer reads merged ids,
  3. remove "" fallbacks and fail closed,
  4. only then finish the cross-lane Node.name deletion that the roadmap describes.

Review (INVARIANTS: 7, MODELING: 1+/2-, ROADMAP: 0✓/1!)

INVARIANTS — Violations (7)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/00_core.dag M4 removed the old textual authority before a replacement accessor boundary existed, so functions like param_node_name, field_init_node_name, expr_var_name, field_access_field, and expr_call_func encode absence as "". That fabricated sentinel then propagates into lookups, dispatch, and emit decisions downstream. Replace these APIs with ident plus InternTable or _at(NewlineIndex?) boundaries and delete the fail-open string accessors entirely (M4/M5/M8).
  • src/v2/00_core.dag Kernel types lost their textual authority before gaining structural authorities of their own, so downstream code now reads anonymous built-ins through ident and intern_str and can no longer distinguish them reliably. Define kernel types as canonical declaration nodes or canonical interned ids once, then derive these constants from that authority instead of hand-building anonymous leaves (M4/M9).
  • src/v2/04_types.dag The upstream gap is that M4 removed Node.name without first introducing one authoritative constructor for synthetic named nodes, so callers now re-encode names ad hoc as missing idents, string pseudo-idents, or ident 0. Add a single synthetic named-node builder that takes a real ident or an explicit error and reuse it everywhere types/infer/emit synthesize named Nodes (M4/M5/M8).
  • src/v2/04_types.dag AlgebraTypeTemplate still expects carrier identity to be recoverable as a string; after M4 removed name authority, SameAsReceiver needs a structural receiver witness, not an empty-string sentinel. Carry the receiver declaration edge or ident through template instantiation and reuse std/algebra.dag composition directly instead of reconstructing carrier identity from names (M8/M9).
  • src/v2/05_emit_go.dag The module-identity boundary was not replaced before Node.name removal, so the language emitters compensate with anonymous sentinels instead of receiving one structural module authority. Thread module.ident plus InternTable into shared module-emission helpers and derive filenames and import paths from that single source, with LanguageSpec handling only syntax rendering.

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/00_core.dag InternTable places authored-identifier capture at the parser boundary, which is the right authority point for M4 even though later id-rewriting is still incomplete.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/02_parse.dag NameResult still extends the bespoke parser result family instead of reusing one generic parser carrier, so the diff continues the M6 value/state/error type proliferation.
  • src/v2/04_types.dag SameAsReceiver should carry a structural receiver witness rather than a carrier string, so container and callable synthesis composes from std/algebra.dag without ad-hoc name recovery.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • M4 Lane 2: Node.name deletion: The PR advances intern-table plumbing, but D6 and B4 are still incomplete because fabricated "" accessors, anonymous kernel types, and synthetic nodes without ident leave structural identity unsound.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • M4 Lane 2 intern-table plumbing: ParserState, ParseResult, FrontendResult, and multiple infer, type, and emit boundaries now carry InternTable, but ROADMAP.md was not updated to record that partial M4-L2 progress.

The PR moves identity plumbing forward, but it still deletes textual authority before structural authorities exist, so the new code introduces fresh fabrication and synthetic-node identity violations that make the M4-L2 migration unsafe.

Blocking.

ROADMAP.md is not modified in this diff, so there is no roadmap-doc drift item to score. But the implementation itself is not aligned with the roadmap phase it’s trying to land. The roadmap still treats M4-L2 (Node.name deletion) as a coordinated phase with open structural work: remaining direct n.name reads, kernel type identity work, and roughly 115 constructor sites still to update before deleting the field. It also frames M4-L2 as a cross-cutting Phase 2 step, not a partial leaf migration. chatgpt-review-0e794419-ca3f-48…

The biggest blocker is the new intern-table design.

Each file now parses with its own ParserState.intern_table initialized from empty_intern_table(), and compile.dag later merges those per-file tables with merge_intern_tables(). But that merge only re-interns strings into a fresh global table; it does not remap the already-built Node.ident integers inside parsed ASTs. After that, later stages decode those old per-file ids against the merged table. That is unsound across files: file-local id 1 in file A and file-local id 1 in file B can now both be interpreted through one merged table even though only one mapping survives as “id 1” in each original file’s meaning. 04_env.dag::merge_envs() compounds it by selecting the single env whose intern_table.next_id is largest rather than unioning/remapping interned ids. This is exactly the kind of duplicated / lossy authority the invariants call out: the fix belongs at the producer boundary, not in downstream recovery. chatgpt-review-984ac44d-888b-43…

There is a second, even more concrete producer-side problem: many named nodes stop carrying identity at all.

In 02_parse.dag, make_operation_node() and make_capability_node() drop the name parameter, but the constructed Node no longer gets a replacement ident field either. The same pattern appears in several item/type construction sites. parse_type_after_kw() and parse_service_after_kw() now build Node { ... ident_span: Some{name_span}, ... } but omit the actual identifier payload. finish_type_expr_from_name() is worse: plain named type refs now become leaf_type_node(ident: 0, ...), and generic named type refs become Node { ... ident_span: Some{start_span}, ... } with no ident. So authored type names like Int, Foo, or Map<K,V> can lose their identity during parse, before resolve even begins. Likewise parse_import_names_acc() now turns specific imported names into parsed_name_leaf(ident: 0, ...), so import_specific_names() has no real identifier to recover later. Unless omitted Node fields implicitly default to something meaningful, some of these sites may also be compile breaks; if omitted fields default to 0, they are definitely semantic breaks. The roadmap explicitly says constructor migration is still open; this diff is deleting authority before the producer migration is finished. chatgpt-review-0e794419-ca3f-48…

The third blocker is fail-open fabrication.

00_core.dag::authored_name_at() now returns "" whenever source_index is absent, points at a different file, or ident_span is missing. intern_str() returns "" for unknown ids. intern_find_or_empty() returns 0. Core accessors like expr_var_name, field_access_field, expr_call_func, expr_method_name, lambda_param_names, let_binding_name, foreach_variable, and record_lit_type_name now return "" instead of failing closed. That is the exact anti-pattern both docs warn about: silent defaults and fabricated placeholders propagating as if they were facts. The invariants call silent defaults/fabrication a violation of modeling faithfulness and root-cause discipline, and the modeling guidance repeatedly prefers String?/sum types over sentinel strings. chatgpt-review-984ac44d-888b-43…

chatgpt-review-2fca4d93-d04d-48…

That fabrication is already causing obvious downstream behavior regressions in this diff.

compile.dag::validate_boundaries() now computes artifact names with plan.artifacts |> map(a => ""), so boundary validation can no longer validate anything real. extract_func_entries() emits FuncEntry { name: "" }. extract_ownership_proofs() calls analyze_ownership(func_name: "", ...). 04_infer.dag::typecheck_modules() inserts typed modules into module_index under "", which risks collapsing the entire module index to one key. complexity.dag::resolve_lambda_arg() now filters with "" == "f", so it can never find the f argument. ownership.dag changed record-literal fold checks from terminal.name == acc_type_name to "" == acc_type_name, which makes the constructive-accumulator proof path effectively dead. 04_patterns.dag now does things like lookup_type(env, name: "") and resolved.children |> map(c => ""), which directly breaks match exhaustiveness and variant-name diagnostics. These are not transitional nits; they are concrete logic bugs.

On compositional modeling quality, the intent is good but the resulting model is worse than the pre-change one.

Right now identifier authority is split across four mechanisms:

  1. Node.ident
  2. per-file then merged InternTable
  3. ident_span + source_index via authored_name_at
  4. sentinel "" / id 0

That is multi-authority identity, not compositional structure. Existing std-library patterns go the other way: optional lookup instead of sentinel fabrication (container_param_name(...) -> String?), and algebraic map structure instead of list/sentinel recovery (PartialFunction<K,V> with optional lookup). The modeling docs make the same point in general form: when a fact needs representation, give it one structural home and make misses explicit rather than silently fabricating a value. chatgpt-review-2fca4d93-d04d-48…

chatgpt-review-984ac44d-888b-43…

A few more concrete review notes:

  • import_specific_names() now depends on authored_name_at() for imported-name leaves, but parse_import_names_acc() creates those leaves with ident: 0. That means specific import names are very likely to serialize / resolve as empty strings.
  • The diff adds .claude/scheduled_tasks.lock, which looks like a machine-local lock artifact and should not be committed.
  • I do not see targeted regression tests for the new authority split. Given the scope here, that is a serious gap.

The tests I’d consider minimum before merge:

  1. A two-file parse/resolve test where both files intern different names at the same local ids, proving cross-file name recovery stays correct.
  2. A specific-import test proving import foo { Bar, Baz } keeps Bar/Baz through serialization and resolve.
  3. A type-expression parse test proving plain named types and generic named types preserve identity (Int, Foo, Map<K,V>).
  4. A module-index test proving multiple modules do not collapse into the "" key.
  5. A boundary-plan test proving artifact names still validate correctly.

Recommendation: don’t merge as-is. The fix order should be:

  • choose one authoritative identifier representation at each stage boundary,
  • if a global intern table is desired, add a real remap pass over parsed nodes before any consumer reads merged ids,
  • remove ""/0 fallbacks in favor of fail-closed optionals or diagnostics,
  • only then finish the coordinated Node.name deletion the roadmap describes.

ChatGPT Review

I reviewed the uploaded PR diff against the attached invariants/modeling docs and existing patterns.

ROADMAP.md is not modified in this PR, so there’s no roadmap-file drift to flag. That said, a few changes look out of alignment with the roadmap/invariant end-state of “structural facts flow intact through boundaries” and “no lossy boundaries/new fact layers without end-to-end consumers.” chatgpt-review-f4628320-ee17-47…

chatgpt-review-390128df-e8ed-4d…

The main issues I see:

  1. Cross-file identity looks broken by the merged intern-table design.

parse() now starts each file with a fresh empty_intern_table(), and front_end_sources() later builds a merged_intern_table by re-interning strings from each parsed file into a new table, then passes that merged table into resolve/normalize/reconcile. I could not find any remap step that rewrites already-parsed Node.ident values from each file-local table into the merged table’s IDs.

That means IDs are still file-local when the downstream stages start decoding them against the merged/global table. Two files can both have ident = 1, but mean different strings. Once merged, intern_str(merged, 1) can only mean one of them. This is a real correctness bug, not just a cleanup gap.

This is the deepest/root-cause issue in the PR: it introduces a lossy boundary/fact table instead of a single authoritative identity flow, which the invariants explicitly call out as invalid. chatgpt-review-390128df-e8ed-4d…

INVARIANTS

  1. Specific import names are being dropped to ident: 0, but resolve now trusts child.ident.

In parse_import_names_acc, the diff changes specific imported names to parsed_name_leaf(ident: 0, ...). But in resolve, the new import validation checks the export set using intern_str(table: intern_table, id: child.ident) and also builds MissingExport from that same decoded ID.

So import foo { Bar } now appears to validate/export-check "", not Bar. That makes specific-import checking and diagnostics wrong even before considering the cross-file merge bug.

  1. intern_find_or_empty() is a fabrication fallback, and it’s used in places where misses are plausible.

The new helper returns 0 on miss, and it’s used to build synthetic transport/service-config property nodes like transport URL/method/path/query/body/stdin and service config keys like svc_endpoint, svc_auth, etc.

Those keys are synthetic compiler vocabulary, not necessarily strings that appeared in parsed source. If they weren’t interned earlier, they silently collapse to the anonymous/empty sentinel. That violates the “no fallbacks that fabricate” rule and also makes later property lookup ambiguous. The docs are pretty direct that silent defaults and lossy fact tables are not acceptable steady state. chatgpt-review-390128df-e8ed-4d…

INVARIANTS

  1. The n.name migration is incomplete, and several emit paths were replaced with "" instead of actual identity.

I found multiple cases in the emitters where a prior *.name use was not migrated to intern_str(...) or an _at accessor, but simply became "". Examples include module filenames/import names, algebra method names, service-name lookups, shared-type/type-summary map lookups, HTTP header keys, and shell env keys.

This is not harmless debt. Those empty strings change emitted behavior:

  • imports can point at the wrong module path,
  • map lookups keyed by type/module/item name can miss,
  • emitted header/env keys become empty,
  • algebra method dispatch can degrade.
  1. That runs directly against the invariant that emission should translate already-annotated structure, not recover meaning via heuristics/placeholders. chatgpt-review-390128df-e8ed-4d…
  2. There are likely incomplete constructor-signature migrations too.

A number of raw Node { ... } literals seem to have dropped name: without adding ident:. There are also several default_ident_span(ident: ...) call sites that still appear to pass string variables like kind_name, param_name, or name rather than an interned Int.

Depending on how strict the DAG compiler is here, that’s either:

  • a compile/type error, or
  • a silent fallback to anonymous ID/default fields.
  1. Either outcome suggests the migration is incomplete.
  2. There are also direct call-site mismatches after signature changes.

I saw helper signatures change to require intern_table (for example transport/config helpers), while some call sites still use the old arity. That looks like an immediate compile-breakage class on top of the semantic issues above.

  1. Unrelated file in the PR: .claude/scheduled_tasks.lock

This should not be in the change. It is unrelated to M4-L2 and violates the repo’s own branch-scoping guidance for review queue work. chatgpt-review-390128df-e8ed-4d…

On compositional modeling quality for the .dag changes:

The direction is reasonable: moving identity toward parser-owned interned IDs could be a good M4-L2 step. The problem is that it does not land as a single end-to-end authority yet. Right now the PR creates two identity representations:

  • file-local parse IDs
  • later merged/global IDs

without an equivalence-preserving transition between them. That is exactly the kind of lossy boundary the invariants warn about. The docs explicitly say new semantic boundaries must land end-to-end and lossy fact tables are already invariant violations. chatgpt-review-390128df-e8ed-4d…

I’d summarize the root cause like this:

  • The bug is not “emit still has some empty strings.”
  • The bug is that identity is being split across stages without preserving it structurally.
  • The right fix is upstream: either use one authoritative intern table from parse onward, or remap every parsed node/import/item into the merged table before any downstream consumer reads IDs. That matches the repo’s root-cause-depth guidance. chatgpt-review-390128df-e8ed-4d…

Tests I’d want before merge:

  • a two-file test proving cross-file IDs remain correct after merge,
  • a specific-import test (import provider { Missing }) on the new intern path,
  • transport/service-config tests that prove header/env/config keys survive parse→resolve→emit,
  • self-host/fixed-point coverage for this PR specifically, since identity migration is the kind of change that can subtly diverge stage0/stage1.

Net: I would not merge this as-is. The intern-table idea is promising, but the current diff looks structurally incomplete and introduces at least one serious correctness regression.

INVARIANTS — Violations (12)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/compile.dag ResolvedGraph already carries the item node, but the analysis boundary drops that authority when it constructs FuncEntry and OwnershipProof inputs; the missing upstream identity then propagates into func_index keys, SCC membership, self-call checks, and proof labels. Fix upstream by carrying the item node or a stable symbol reference through the complexity and ownership boundaries and deriving printable names only at diagnostics, per MODELING.md M4 and M5.
  • src/v2/02_parse.dag The parser captures identifier ids through expect_ident and expect_name elsewhere, but the import-names path drops that upstream fact and emits anonymous leaves; resolve_import then treats child.ident as the authority for export-membership checks, so specific imports collapse to "". Fix upstream by interning dotted import names at parse time and threading that ident through the import child nodes, or by keeping resolve on authored source text until stable symbol refs exist, per MODELING.md M4 and M5.
  • src/v2/04_items.dag Variant constructor identity is still modeled as a Map<String, TypeBinding> keyed by names; after Node.name deletion the code patches that missing upstream fact with "", so every constructor aliases to one entry downstream in infer. Fix upstream by keying variant locals with a structural child reference or stable symbol reference carried from the type declaration, and render names only at diagnostics, per MODELING.md M4 and M5.
  • src/v2/04_patterns.dag Pattern analysis still depends on string recovery to resolve the scrutinee type and enumerate variants; after deleting Node.name the missing upstream fact is patched with "", which then propagates into both lookup_type and the exhaustiveness set comparison. Fix upstream by carrying the resolved type node and variant child references through the pattern boundary and computing exhaustiveness structurally from those nodes, per MODELING.md M4 and M5.
  • src/v2/complexity.dag Higher-order method cost analysis needs a stable semantic slot for the callback argument, but that upstream fact is absent and this helper compensates with a fabricated string match on ""; the gap then propagates into wrong callback summaries. Fix upstream by recording callback position or name on MethodSemantics, or by threading the existing interned arg identity into this helper, so complexity reads a structural fact instead of guessing, per MODELING.md M4, M5, and M9.
  • src/v2/05_emit_rust.dag After Node.name deletion the emit boundary still does not carry structural import, method, field, and type facts, and the backends compensate by substituting ""; that missing upstream authority propagates into wrong imports, wrong method dispatch, and anonymous extraction code across targets. Fix upstream by enriching reconcile and emit data with resolved item, type, method, and resource references and letting LanguageSpec supply only syntax, which aligns with MODELING.md M4 and M9 and INVARIANTS.md Emission is translation, not decision-making.
  • src/v2/compile.dag ArtifactPlan still models inter-artifact edges by string names, but this diff deletes the populated names without replacing them with structural artifact references, so validation can only compare fabricated empties. Fix upstream by carrying artifact identity structurally on the plan boundary, or by preserving the real artifact name until that reference exists, per MODELING.md M4 and M5.

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/00_core.dag InternTable sits at the compiler-core boundary and models parser-authoritative symbol capture explicitly, which is more faithful than treating source-text recovery as semantic authority later.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/04_types.dag Synthesized type builders still compose from String kind names plus intern_find_or_empty; make them consume declaration nodes or bound type refs so container and nominal identity emerge from the existing type environment, which would be more compositional under MODELING.md M4 and M9.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • M4 Lane 2: Node.name deletion: This PR materially advances D6 by deleting Node.name and threading parser interning through parse, resolve, normalize, and reconcile, but ROADMAP.md was not updated to record the cutover or the remaining empty-string identity regressions.

The PR makes real M4-L2 progress, but it still erases semantic identity in analysis, pattern matching, artifact validation, and emission, so the cutover is not yet invariant-safe.

ChatGPT Review

I reviewed the diff against the attached invariants/modeling docs and the current M4/D6 roadmap state.

ROADMAP.md is not modified in this PR, so there’s no roadmap-text drift to review. Substantively, though, the diff looks ahead of the attached D6 acceptance state rather than aligned with it.

The biggest issues I see:

  1. Blocker: file-local intern IDs are merged globally without a remap step.

The parser now starts each file with its own empty_intern_table(), and front_end_sources() later builds a merged_intern_table from all parse results and passes that merged table into resolve. But the parsed Node.ident values are still the file-local IDs they were assigned during each individual parse. I do not see any pass that rewrites those IDs into the merged table’s numbering before downstream code starts calling intern_str(...) on them.

That means two files can both have ident = 1 for different strings, and after merge only one meaning survives for 1. This is the deepest correctness bug in the PR.

  1. Blocker: named imports are parsed as anonymous leaves.

parse_import_names_acc now builds each specific imported name with parsed_name_leaf(ident: 0, ...), and lambda params got the same treatment. Later, resolve validates imports with intern_str(table: intern_table, id: child.ident) and builds MissingExport from that same decoded ID. So import provider { Foo } now appears to validate against "", not Foo.

That is a direct regression in both correctness and diagnostics. It also likely hits lambda parameter identity for any path that relies on lambda_param_names_at.

  1. Blocker: a lot of the Node.name migration became "" placeholders instead of preserved identity.

I found many call sites where a previous semantic name read was not migrated to intern_str(...) or a structurally grounded accessor, but just replaced with "". A few examples:

  • is_copy(target: Rust, dag_name: "")
  • is_string_like(target: Rust, name: "")
  • OwnershipProofEntry { name: "", proof: analyze_ownership(func_name: "", ...) }
  • map_insert(a, "", mod_filename) for service-module mapping
  • module_to_filename(name: "")
  • lookup_item(registry: registry, name: "")
  • coerce_primitive_type(target: Rust, dag_name: "")
  1. These are not harmless placeholders. They change emitted behavior, registry lookups, ownership analysis, module filenames/imports, and type rendering. The attached roadmap explicitly says D6 still had remaining direct n.name reads, constructor work, and kernel/container identity work open before Node.name deletion. chatgpt-review-6b362761-6993-4a…
  2. Invariant violation: intern_find_or_empty() is a fabrication fallback, and it is used on structural keys.

The new helper returns 0 on miss, and it is used to assign IDs for transport keys and service-config keys such as transport_url_key, transport_method_key, svc_endpoint, svc_auth, and friends. If those strings were not interned earlier in the same table, they silently collapse to the anonymous/empty sentinel.

The attached invariants are explicit that silent defaults, fabrication fallbacks, and placeholder emissions are violations, and that the fix belongs upstream where the fact originates, not in a downstream compensating fallback. chatgpt-review-22570431-7651-42…

chatgpt-review-6b362761-6993-4a…

  1. Likely compile break: service_config_properties signature changed, but at least one call site still uses the old arity.

The helper now takes intern_table, but parse_service_after_kw still calls:

dagservice_config_properties(endpoint: cfg.endpoint, auth: cfg.auth, ...)

with no intern_table argument. That looks like a straight arity mismatch in the diff as written.

  1. The new _at accessor layer is still not enough structurally.

authored_name_at no longer falls back to node.name; it now returns "" when ident_span is missing, the source_index is absent, or the file mismatches. A lot of the new helpers are just thin wrappers over that function. So even where the migration changed n.name to *_at(...), identity still disappears unless the exact span/source plumbing is present and correct.

That matches the attached roadmap’s D6 note that accessor migration was only a phase, not the endpoint: resolve still needed structural identity, constructor work remained, and Node.name deletion was still gated on that remaining work. chatgpt-review-6b362761-6993-4a…

  1. Possible constructor hazard: many Node { ... } literals seem to drop name: without clearly supplying ident:.

Since Node changed from name: String to ident: Int, these literals are risky. I can’t tell from the DSL record-literal rules whether omitted fields default automatically. If not, this is a compile error. If they do, it silently defaults the new identity field, which is another bad outcome for a change whose whole point is identity preservation.

  1. Unrelated file in the PR: .claude/scheduled_tasks.lock

This should be dropped. It is unrelated review-tool state, not part of M4-L2.

On compositional modeling quality for the .dag changes:

The direction is right: moving identity upstream and killing direct Node.name reads is the right problem to work on. The problem is that this diff does not land a single end-to-end authority. It introduces at least three partially overlapping identity channels:

  • file-local intern IDs from parse
  • source-text recovery via ident_span/source_text_at
  • merged/global intern IDs later in the pipeline

without a sound transition between them. That is exactly the kind of upstream fact loss / downstream compensation the attached invariants and roadmap call out as the root cause class. chatgpt-review-6b362761-6993-4a…

chatgpt-review-f4628320-ee17-47…

The same concern shows up in transport/config modeling. Existing direction says emit should consume the transport/config facts it already has, directly, instead of rediscovering them. This PR still leans on synthetic property keys plus fallback lookup, which is weaker than a first-class structural carrier. chatgpt-review-6b362761-6993-4a…

Net assessment:

  • I would not merge this as-is.
  • The main blocker is the intern-table architecture, not the leaf call sites.
  • The import-name regression looks immediate and user-visible.
  • The "" placeholder replacements suggest the migration is incomplete enough to introduce broad silent miscompilations even where the code still typechecks.

Tests I’d want before merge:

  • a two-file test proving cross-file ident values survive merge correctly,
  • a MissingExport test for import provider { Foo },
  • a lambda-param name round-trip test,
  • transport/service-config tests proving those property keys survive parse → resolve → emit,
  • a self-host/fixed-point run specifically for this PR, because identity regressions are exactly the kind that show up there first.

Review (INVARIANTS: 9, MODELING: 2+/2-, ROADMAP: 0✓/0!)

INVARIANTS — Violations (9)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/02_parse.dag Upstream gap: after deleting Node.name, the parser still lacks single-authority constructors for named declarations and members. Chain: expect_ident now produces name_id, but raw Node literals for ops, types, and block items either cannot accept ident or ignore it, so items are born anonymous and every later intern_str(item.ident) lookup in infer, complexity, ownership, and emit collapses to empty strings. Upstream fix: add core constructors for every named item/member that require ident plus ident_span and replace raw Node literals with those authorities, per MODELING.md M1/M2/M9.
  • src/v2/00_core.dag Upstream gap: there is no core copy/update API that preserves ident by default when a Node is rewritten. Chain: wrappers in 00_core and rewrites in resolve manually rebuild records, forget ident, and downstream intern-table consumers then see anonymous nodes even when parse assigned an identity. Upstream fix: introduce identity-preserving copy/update helpers in 00_core and route all structural rewrites through them, which matches MODELING.md M1/M2/M9 and keeps Node as the sole recursive authority.
  • src/v2/02_parse.dag Upstream gap: exit entries are still modeled as ad hoc field-init strings instead of a structured exit-entry declaration. Chain: after Node.name deletion the parser has no authority surface for exit-key or output-type identity, so it stringifies, then drops both facts into ident 0 placeholders, and downstream exit typing/emission cannot recover them. Upstream fix: model exit/response entries as structured nodes with an interned status key and a direct Node edge to the output type, leaving string rendering to emit, per MODELING.md M1/M8/M9.
  • src/v2/compile.dag Upstream gap: ownership and Rust emit still consume raw String identities, but the PR does not replace that boundary with structural item/type authority. Chain: compile and emit helpers compensate with empty strings, which then poison ownership proof names, service-module indices, and extdep type lookups. Upstream fix: carry canonical item/type identity across these boundaries as ident plus intern_table or a structural ItemRef/TypeCheckpoint surface, and derive display names once from that authority instead of fabricating blanks, consistent with MODELING.md M1/M7/M9.

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/00_core.dag Moving semantic identity from Node.name into Node.ident plus an explicit InternTable is the right compositional direction: authored text becomes a recoverable view instead of core authority.
  • src/v2/02_parse.dag Extending NameResult with name_id captures identity at token consumption time, which is more faithful than re-deriving names later from spans or strings.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/00_core.dag InternResult is a bespoke state-threading product; if interning is parser state, reuse the shared parser state/result carrier or add a generic State/Result form in std per MODELING.md M6/M9 instead of another ad hoc type.
  • src/v2/02_parse.dag node_to_name_str and exit-entry synthesis still model types as rendered names rather than structural edges; a more compositional model would keep direct Node references and interned keys until emit, aligning with MODELING.md M1/M8/M9.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • M4 Lane 2: Node.name deletion (D6): The diff clearly attempts the open D6 cutover across parse, resolve, compile, and emit, but ROADMAP.md was not updated to record that this Phase 2 work is in flight or that the identity boundary remains incomplete.

The PR fixes several mechanical review issues, but named-node construction and identity-preserving rewrites are still unsound, so empty-string and ident-0 collapses continue to leak through parse, resolve, ownership, and Rust emit.

ChatGPT Review

I reviewed the uploaded PR diff itself and used the attached invariants/modeling docs plus std-library.dag only as reference.

ROADMAP.md is not modified in this PR diff, so there’s no roadmap-text drift to review. Substantively, though, the attached roadmap describes M4-L2 as the true cross-lane identity phase that runs after lanes A and B have reached acceptance, so a partial identity migration here is especially risky. chatgpt-review-1d68afa9-ce4e-49…

The main issues I see:

  1. Blocker: file-local intern IDs are merged into a new global table with no remap.

Parsing now starts each file with its own empty_intern_table(), then front_end_sources() builds a fresh merged_intern_table by re-interning strings from each parsed file. Resolve/normalize/reconcile then consume that merged table. But I do not see any pass that rewrites already-parsed Node.ident values into the merged table’s numbering before downstream code starts decoding them. That means identities are still file-local while consumers treat them as global. Cross-file collisions are guaranteed; for example, two different modules can both carry ident = 1, and whichever string lands at 1 in the merged table wins. This is the deepest bug in the PR.

  1. Blocker: parsed named types still carry ident: 0, but downstream type logic now trusts ident.

leaf_type_node, finish_type_expr_from_name, and maybe_optional still construct named type nodes with ident: 0. The same is true for several synthetic/core named type nodes (Unit, String, Int, etc.). But normalize/access/types have been migrated in many places to read the type name via intern_str(..., n.ident) rather than n.name. That affects checks like bare-container validation, collection detection, keyed-collection detection, is_fully_resolved, known-method resolution, and other type-identity paths. In those paths, List, Map, String, user-defined types, and even optionalized named types can collapse to "".

  1. Blocker: specific import names are still parsed as anonymous leaves, but resolve validates imports via child.ident.

parsed_name_leaf() still creates specific imported names with ident: 0. In resolve_import, the PR now validates imported names with intern_str(table: intern_table, id: child.ident) and also builds MissingExport from that same decoded value. So import foo { Bar } now appears to validate and diagnose against "", not Bar. That is a direct correctness regression.

  1. Identity-erasing wrappers are still present.

Helpers like with_optional_cardinality and with_required_cardinality now rebuild nodes with ident: 0 instead of preserving the existing ID. I saw the same pattern in a number of resolve/type-construction wrappers. So even if a node starts life with a correct interned ID, later structural copies can silently erase it mid-pipeline.

  1. Invariant issue: the new miss paths silently fabricate the empty sentinel.

intern_find_or_empty() returns 0 on miss, and intern_str() returns "" when an ID is absent. That means identity failures degrade silently into the anonymous/empty sentinel instead of becoming diagnostics. The attached invariants are explicit that silent defaults, fabrication fallbacks, and downstream compensation for lost facts are violations; the fix belongs where the fact is first lost, not in the consumer that happens to notice the gap. chatgpt-review-390128df-e8ed-4d…

chatgpt-review-390128df-e8ed-4d…

On compositional modeling quality for the .dag changes:

There is some good direction here. Centralizing a few transport/config keys into shared constants is closer to the existing std-library pattern where one helper/data-table is the single authority and everyone reads from it. But the identity work is not compositional yet. Right now the PR creates overlapping authorities:

  • Node.name
  • per-file Node.ident
  • a later merged/global intern table
  • span/source recovery via authored_name_at

That is not one end-to-end fact. Existing std-library patterns work because producers and consumers agree on one authority; this diff introduces a new fact layer without making the producer/consumer contract canonical.

So my overall assessment is:

  • The accessor rewrites themselves are mostly not the problem.
  • The real issue is that identity is now split across boundaries.
  • The root cause is upstream, in parse/merge/copy semantics, not in emit or access leaf sites.

I would not merge this as-is.

The fix should be structural and upstream: either parse all sources against one authoritative intern table from the start, or add an explicit remap pass that rewrites every parsed Node.ident into the merged table before any downstream consumer reads it. That matches both the invariants and the roadmap’s expectation that M4-L2 lands as a coordinated identity phase rather than a mixed intermediate state. chatgpt-review-1d68afa9-ce4e-49…

Before merge, I’d want at least:

  • a two-file test proving module/import/type IDs survive multi-file frontend assembly,
  • a specific-import test for import provider { Foo },
  • a normalization/type test showing List, Map, String, and Foo? still retain identity on the new ident path.

ChatGPT Review

I reviewed the uploaded PR diff against INVARIANTS.md, MODELING.md, ROADMAP.md, and std-library.dag.

I’d block this PR on two correctness issues.

1) Parser-local intern ids are merged globally without remapping existing nodes

In the diff, parse() now seeds a fresh empty_intern_table() per file and returns that table in ParseResult (diff lines 532–541). Later, front_end_sources() merges those per-file tables into one merged_intern_table and passes that merged table into resolve_modules() (diff lines 5878–5904). But I do not see any remap walk that rewrites already-built Node.ident values from file-local id space into merged-global id space before downstream code starts decoding names with intern_str(table: intern_table, id: ...). Resolve and normalize now rely on that merged table for module names, imports, exported names, and bare-container checks (for example diff lines 1839–1841, 1845–1851, 1913–1945, 1976–1989, 1805–1811).

That means two files can both assign local id 1 to different strings, and after merge both nodes still carry ident = 1 even though only one merged-global meaning can live at id 1. Best case, you get spurious DuplicateModule / MissingExport; worst case, cross-file identity silently aliases.

This is exactly the kind of boundary problem the invariants call out: a fact table must be an exact derivation and must land end-to-end as the authority, otherwise it is a lossy parallel representation. The fix belongs upstream at the producer boundary, not as another fallback in resolve or emit. chatgpt-review-43b953e2-5282-48…

chatgpt-review-43b953e2-5282-48…

The root-cause fix is one of:

  • build one global interner before/while parsing all files, so ids are global from birth, or
  • keep per-file interners, but explicitly remap every stored ident in every parsed node/module/import child when constructing the merged table.

Anything else is downstream compensation.

2) ident production/preservation is incomplete, and missing ids silently fabricate "" / 0

The new authority is not actually wired end-to-end yet.

The diff adds sentinel behavior:

  • intern_str(...) returns "" on miss (diff lines 383–389)
  • intern_find_or_empty(...) returns 0 on miss (diff lines 399–404)

At the same time, many common constructors and transforms still produce or reintroduce ident: 0:

  • with_optional_cardinality and with_required_cardinality explicitly reset ident: 0 (diff lines 407–414)
  • leaf_type_node(...) still constructs ident: 0 (diff lines 508–510)
  • parsed_name_leaf(...) still constructs ident: 0 for specific import names (diff lines 611–613)
  • top-level parsed type defs still create named items with ident: 0 even though parse_item_prefix now carries name_id (for example diff lines 737–756)

Meanwhile downstream code has already switched to treating ident as authority:

  • resolve_modules() keys module/export maps by intern_str(..., m.ident) (diff lines 1839–1851)
  • resolve_import() validates specific imported names via intern_str(..., child.ident) (diff lines 1913–1945)
  • get_item_name() / get_variant_names() now decode from item.ident / child.ident (diff lines 1976–1989)
  • normalize_graph() uses intern_str(..., m.module.ident) for diagnostics (diff lines 1805–1811)

So the producer/consumer cutover is incomplete: many nodes still have no usable interned identity, and the miss path silently degrades to empty strings instead of failing closed.

That violates both the invariants and the modeling guidance:

  • silent defaults / fabrication fallbacks are forbidden,
  • missing data should propagate as optional/error, not "" / 0,
  • lossy fact tables are not acceptable as intermediate scaffolding. chatgpt-review-3eccbcb2-75a2-4a…

chatgpt-review-43b953e2-5282-48…

chatgpt-review-43b953e2-5282-48…

This also creates concrete user-facing bugs:

  • import foo { Bar } can validate Bar as "",
  • exported-name sets can contain "",
  • bare-container checks can skip because the type name decodes to "",
  • diagnostics can point at the right span but report the wrong or empty symbol.

So I would not merge until:

  • all syntactic/name-bearing parse constructors consume name_id,
  • all preserving transforms preserve ident,
  • all synthetic nodes are clearly synthetic and never decoded through intern_str,
  • miss paths become String? / Int? or a typed error carrier, not sentinel values.

Modeling quality of the .dag changes

The InternTable idea itself is reasonable compiler plumbing. The modeling problem is the way it is used: it behaves like a lossy sentinel table rather than a single structural authority.

The repo’s existing std-library pattern is “authoritative data declaration + structural consumer” — for example global tables like kernel_algebra_profile, dag_cast_rules, and the language specs are modeled as canonical data, not as per-file local tables merged later while old references keep stale ids. The new interning layer does not match that pattern yet. It is effectively three competing name authorities at once: name, ident_span/source_text_at, and now ident. That is not compositional; it is duplicated identity with partial migration.

The clean model here is:

  • one authority for semantic identity,
  • explicit optional/error on miss,
  • exact producer-to-consumer preservation.

Right now it is still in the “multiple partial authorities + fallback” shape that MODELING M5/M7 warns against. chatgpt-review-3eccbcb2-75a2-4a…

Roadmap alignment

ROADMAP.md is not modified in this PR, so there is no roadmap-text drift to flag.

Conceptually, this PR is clearly in the M4 Lane 2 / D6 area, but it is not at the roadmap’s acceptance point yet. The roadmap still says that for D6:

  • node.name is still semantic authority underneath,
  • there are still remaining direct n.name reads,
  • and many Node construction sites still need updating before Node.name can be deleted. chatgpt-review-489c8d03-a279-48…

That matters here because the diff’s new authored_name_at fast path now says, in effect, “if ident != 0, just trust node.name.” So even after migrating call sites to _at helpers, the accessor is still entrenching node.name as authority instead of moving toward structural identity. That matches the roadmap’s “accessor layer done, node.name still semantic authority underneath” warning, not the end state. Pasted markdown (2)

chatgpt-review-489c8d03-a279-48…

I would treat that as a non-blocking design concern once the two correctness blockers are fixed, but it is directionally opposite to D6’s real endpoint.

General code review notes

The deepest issue here is not “some resolve sites forgot to use the right helper.” It is that the PR introduces a new identity channel without making it globally valid before consumers rely on it. That is precisely the producer-boundary mistake the invariants call out. chatgpt-review-43b953e2-5282-48…

I did not find a separate .dag algebra-pattern complaint beyond that. The main review outcome is: the new interning boundary is currently unsound.

The regression tests I’d expect with the fix are:

  • two files whose first interned identifiers differ, to catch cross-file id aliasing after merge,
  • import provider { Foo } where Foo must keep a nonzero ident,
  • a preservation test proving with_optional_cardinality / with_required_cardinality do not erase identity,
  • a fail-closed test proving an invalid ident does not decode to "".

So my recommendation is: block this PR until the interner is either globally authoritative from parse time, or there is an explicit remap pass plus full ident preservation with no sentinel fallback.

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/00_core.dag Cardinality is an orthogonal wrapper fact, but core models it by reconstructing a fresh anonymous Node instead of structurally updating the same one, so node_type_equals and node_type_compatible compare erased ids after optional unwrap and can collapse distinct optional types; fix this upstream with one identity-preserving cardinality-update helper and route every optional-type path through it (MODELING.md M1/M2).
  • src/v2/02_parse.dag Parse now interns token-level names but never lifts that identity through composed-name parsing or a single named-item constructor, so parsed_name_leaf and the prefix-driven declaration builders keep falling back to ident: 0; resolve_import, build_type_env, and service/item registries then call intern_str on anonymous ids and collapse distinct names to ""; fix this at the parse boundary by interning composed dotted names once and routing every authored declaration through a make_named_item_node(name, ident, ...) constructor that requires name_id (MODELING.md M2/M5/M6).

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/00_core.dag InternTable lives at the compiler-core identity boundary, which is the right layer for M4-L2 and more faithful than late source-text recovery.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/02_parse.dag NameResult, ParseResult, and the other parser records still duplicate the same value+state+err/state-thread shape; per MODELING.md M6/A1 this should collapse into one generic ParseResult<T>.
  • src/v2/00_core.dag InternTable is a bijection/partial-function pair in disguise, but it still coexists with Node.name as a second authority; the more compositional M9 end-state is to ground identity in the PartialFunction/Map vocabulary of dsl/std/algebra.dag and delete the dual-write.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • M4 Lane 2: Node.name deletion: The diff advances identity plumbing but does not satisfy the lane's open work because authored_name_at still treats Node.name as authority and many named parser nodes still carry ident: 0.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • M4 Lane 2: Node.name deletion: The PR clearly advances D6 wiring through parse, resolve, typecheck, and emit, but ROADMAP.md was not updated to record that incremental progress or revise the remaining debt.

InternTable provides a parser-owned identifier authority that maps
strings to sequential integer IDs. Phase 1 adds the type, constructor,
lookup functions in 00_core.dag, wires intern_table through ParserState
and ParseResult in 02_parse.dag, and merges tables in compile.dag.

No Node schema changes — Phase 2 (Node.ident + signature threading)
follows after this merges.

  • resolve_modules() keys module/export maps by intern_str(..., m.ident) (diff lines 1839–1851)
  • resolve_import() validates specific imported names via intern_str(..., child.ident) (diff lines 1913–1945)
  • get_item_name() / get_variant_names() now decode from item.ident / child.ident (diff lines 1976–1989)
  • normalize_graph() uses intern_str(..., m.module.ident) for diagnostics (diff lines 1805–1811)

This also creates concrete user-facing bugs:

  • import foo { Bar } can validate Bar as "",
  • exported-name sets can contain "",

So my recommendation is: block this PR until the interner is either globally authoritative from parse time, or there is an explicit remap pass plus full ident preservation with no sentinel fallback.

Review (INVARIANTS: 2, MODELING: 2+/2-, ROADMAP: 1✓/1!)

INVARIANTS — Violations (2)

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • src/v2/00_core.dag The upstream gap is that M4-L2 still has no single IR-level identifier authority: Node construction still treats authored text as the real identity, so 00_core compensates with an ad hoc interner and 02_parse dual-writes the same fact; that duplication then propagates downstream into merge-only tables and stale-ID hazards. Fix it at the source by choosing one authority at construction time, either ident_span plus source_text_at only or a first-class Identifier or Node.ident with an explicit absent case, and if an interner remains model it once as a grounded partial-bijection or state abstraction rather than parallel fields and bespoke carriers (M2, M6, M7, M9).

MODELING — Strengths

  • src/v2/02_parse.dag Carrying intern_table on ParserState keeps the new state explicit and pure, which composes with the parser’s existing state-threading style.
  • src/v2/compile.dag merge_intern_tables is expressed as nested folds over finite tables, so the aggregation itself stays within the bounded iteration model from std/iteration.dag.

MODELING — Improvements

  • src/v2/00_core.dag InternTable is a bidirectional partial-function concept in disguise, so a more compositional model would ground it once in std as a single-authority symbol or bimap abstraction and derive size or reverse lookup instead of storing three authorities side by side.
  • src/v2/00_core.dag InternResult is another bespoke state-carrier result type, and M6 or M9 points toward a shared State or Result pattern for parser and interning flows rather than growing the result family in core.

ROADMAP — Verified

  • M4 Lane 2 dual-write interning scaffold: The diff does add parser-owned interning state, returns it from ParseResult, and threads a merged table through FrontendResult without any current compilation consumer.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • M4 Lane 2 Node.name deletion: The current diff does not deliver the claimed n.name to authored_name_at migration or parser-wide identifier interning via expect_ident or expect_name; it only interns the module name in parse_module.

ROADMAP — Unclaimed

  • M4 Lane 2 intermediate interner phase: ROADMAP.md does not list this new interning side-table step or its exit criteria before Node.name deletion, so the milestone direction changed without a roadmap update.

This revision drops many previously flagged regressions out of the diff, but the remaining interner scaffold still duplicates naming authority at the parser and core boundary and does not yet substantiate the PR’s claimed M4-L2 progress.

The emitter generates Rust use-statements from explicit .dag import
lists, not usage analysis. Add InternTable, InternResult,
empty_intern_table, and intern to the import blocks in 02_parse.dag
and compile.dag so the freshness check passes.
