Remove compiler-core lens.cost import and InferredFacts.cost field (P3).
Add std/outcome.dag traverse combinators, law witnesses, and diagnostic
policies; extend Outcome with Accepted/Rejected while keeping Produced/
RejectedSingular for reconciliation. Declare traverse_node substrate stubs
in std/node.dag. Model file_system peripheral read/write effects with
explicit FileResource parameters; defer ResourceDependsOn until A1 lands.

codex REQUEST_CHANGES (Accepted diagnostic drop) — addressed in 43b6fdae2

Verified valid against current src/v4/std/outcome.dag: map_node_outcome, traverse_outcome, and bind_outcome each had Accepted { …, diagnostics: ds2 } => Accepted { …, diagnostics: ds }, discarding continuation diagnostics.

Fix:

  • append_diagnostics / merge_accepted_diagnostics append prior + next List<Diagnostic> in order.
  • All dual-Accepted success arms now call merge_accepted_diagnostics(prior: ds, next: ds2).

Note: traverse_node / map_node_outcome live in outcome.dag (not node.dag) since 43b6fdae2 also breaks the diagnostic → node → outcome → diagnostic import cycle that caused the v4 bootstrap compile failure.

Softens Outcome delta for cross-PR compatibility with Worker B (#3440):
legacy Rejected { diagnostic } and Produced unchanged; accumulating

claude REQUEST_CHANGES @ e7e1df10c — addressed in c73280930

  1. outcome.dag missing Symbol import — valid. Added Symbol to import v4.std.node { Edge, Node, Symbol } (line 79 data traverse_node_not_realized: Symbol).

  2. Four-variant Outcome / Produced→Accepted normalization — valid coproduct concern; full dissolution is out of scope for this cross-PR wave (Worker B Wave-1 Worker B — std/constraints.dag + std/coercion.dag (strict substrate, exact-only) #3440 still emits Rejected { diagnostic } / Produced). Response:

    • Marked 🟡 coproduct dissolution — W-TRAVERSE-OUTCOME-LEGACY-PRODUCED on Outcome in diagnostic.dag with explicit trigger (migrate consumers → Accepted/RejectedAccumulating; retire legacy variants).
    • map_outcome, bind_outcome, map_node_outcome now preserve Produced on clean-success paths (no Produced → Accepted{…, Empty}).
    • traverse_outcome keeps Produced for diagnostic-free list folds; introduces Accepted only when diagnostics are present.

Non-blocking observations (no change this PR): file_read/file_write dead ops param left as fn-shaped stubs per Wave-1 fail-closed boundary; agree data scaffold is a reasonable follow-on once effect runtime lands.

BLOCKING (8)

Root Cause

  • src/v4/std/diagnostic.dag diagnostic accumulation was added as a substrate carrier without the required dissolution receipt → add the carrier classification and make the accumulator shape canonical before Outcome depends on it.
  • src/v4/std/diagnostic.dag the non-empty diagnostic list is modeled as a coproduct over an already-expressive list shape → use one head-plus-tail carrier, or a two-or-more carrier if singleton remains owned by Rejected.
  • src/v4/std/diagnostic.dag legacy and accumulating Outcome states were kept without disjoint domains or a tracked bridge → make the variants non-overlapping or record a concrete dissolution trigger for the legacy states.
  • src/v4/std/outcome.dag the new diagnostic policy axis was introduced as substrate without its dissolution disposition → add a valid terminal or gated classification with a bound task if gated.
  • src/v4/std/outcome.dag diagnostic accumulation needs list concatenation but the FreeMonoid append authority is absent or not consumed → add or use the canonical std algebra operation, or record the missing primitive as a tracked gate.
  • src/v4/extdeps/file_system.dag file effect kind was modeled once as marker types and again as witness variants → keep one effect-kind authority and attach path/content/witness facts to that shape.

⚠️ The new substrate result and effect carriers need disjoint states, required dissolution receipts, and canonical FreeMonoid composition before merging.

composer-2.5 APPROVE @ 3e05fb59e — acknowledged

Verified: no blocking findings on current HEAD. The approval matches the diff — infer P3 lens separation, bounded Outcome/traverse substrate, fail-closed file-effect stubs, dissolution marks on new yellow carriers.

Exploratory items (no blocking action):

  • Empty Traverse*Law placeholders — intentional while traverse_node remains fail-closed; law bodies land with traverse_node fill (noted).
  • Unused List import in diagnostic.dag — removed in follow-up commit on branch.
  • TestClaim coverage for combinators — deferred until traverse_node fill / testgen lane (agree with reviewer).

Stale REQUEST_CHANGES: codex (d44629b) and claude (e7e1df10) predate 3e05fb59e P2 authority fixes; not applicable to current HEAD. Awaiting fresh reviews + CI on latest commit.

BLOCKING (5)

Root Cause

  • src/v4/compiler/04_infer.dag InferredFacts was narrowed before all existing InferredFacts constructors and imports were migrated -> update those consumers in this PR or keep the field until their lens-side replacement lands.
  • src/v4/std/outcome.dag Outcome traversal is modeled both as a policy-driven combinator and as caller-owned Outcome threading -> make traverse/bind the single failure-policy authority and keep step on the success accumulator.
  • src/v4/extdeps/file_system.dag Effect dependency wiring was introduced inside file_system before the canonical dependency carrier exists -> keep file_system to file-system facts and gate Node/resource dependency binding to std/dependency.

⚠️ The prior comments are mostly addressed, but the new infer boundary and outcome/file-effect carriers still introduce blocking substrate issues.

1. Story of the diff

This PR removes the cost-lens dependency from core inference: 04_infer.dag drops the v4.lens.cost import and removes cost: SymbolicCost from InferredFacts, leaving inference focused on core semantic facts such as resolved type, inhabitance, and descent (src/v4/compiler/04_infer.dag:4, src/v4/compiler/04_infer.dag:34). It then adds diagnostic accumulation shapes in std/diagnostic.dag while deliberately keeping the legacy Outcome<T> = Produced | Rejected surface for bootstrap compatibility (src/v4/std/diagnostic.dag:38, src/v4/std/diagnostic.dag:47). The new std/outcome.dag is intended to become the shared home for Outcome map/bind/traverse helpers, node traversal stubs, diagnostic policy, and traverse law markers (src/v4/std/outcome.dag:28, src/v4/std/outcome.dag:88, src/v4/std/outcome.dag:106). Finally, extdeps/file_system.dag starts modeling peripheral file effects explicitly through FileResource, FilePath, write witnesses, effect witnesses, and fail-closed read/write APIs (src/v4/extdeps/file_system.dag:84, src/v4/extdeps/file_system.dag:108, src/v4/extdeps/file_system.dag:167).

The direction is mostly aligned: inference no longer pulls lens-side cost into compiler-core facts, and file effects fail closed instead of pretending the host filesystem is already wired. The blocking issues are in the new std/outcome substrate surface: it exports accumulation, traversal, and law-witness concepts before the result carrier and dissolution tracking make those concepts structurally honest.

2. Invariant categories

  1. LAYER MODEL — Finding

src/v4/std/outcome.dag:30 declares type DiagnosticAccumulationPolicy = Accumulate | ShortCircuit, and src/v4/std/outcome.dag:72 makes NodeOutcomeFold.step return only Outcome<R>. But src/v4/std/diagnostic.dag:47 keeps Outcome<T> on the legacy single-diagnostic Rejected { diagnostic: Diagnostic } carrier, while PluralDiagnostics is explicitly outside Outcome for now (src/v4/std/diagnostic.dag:41). That means a caller can construct StageDiagnosticPolicy { accumulation: Accumulate }, but the type returned by traverse_node/sequence_node has nowhere to represent the accumulated diagnostics. This violates illegal-states-unrepresentable / boundary sufficiency: the substrate API admits an accumulation mode that any implementation must either ignore or collapse back to one diagnostic. Either hold Accumulate until the Accepted/Rejected-with-diagnostics carrier lands, or change the fold/traverse result carrier now so accumulated diagnostics are representable. INVARIANTS P2 says boundaries must carry enough declared information for mechanical consumers and avoid parallel/insufficient authority. chatgpt-review-4b3140bd-43b5-41…

  1. INVARIANTS.md + modeling-discipline.md — Finding

src/v4/std/outcome.dag:58 adds fn append_non_empty(...) as a recursive match over NonEmptyDiagnostics, and src/v4/std/outcome.dag:106 adds fn traverse_outcome(...) as a recursive List walk that hand-threads Rejected / Produced through nested matches (src/v4/std/outcome.dag:109–114). In a std/ reusable helper, this is exactly the walker/traverse-dissolution shape unless it is routed through the canonical fold/traverse surface or explicitly dispositioned as 🔴/🟡/🟢. The file gives coproduct tags, but the functions themselves do not carry a disposition saying “this is the canonical terminal surface” or “this is feature-gated on the missing fold/traverse primitive with owner/trigger.” Practice 10 names effect traversal and structural recursion as derived operations that must not be hand-rolled without a tracked disposition. chatgpt-review-1e63ca67-4088-4d…

  1. CODING.md — N/A

N/A — the diff is .dag substrate/modeling work, not Rust implementation under src/v3/compiler/src/. The relevant code-style concern here is the modeling/no-prose and dissolution discipline, covered above and below rather than CODING.md’s Rust function/method guidance.

  1. TESTING.md — Finding

src/v4/std/outcome.dag:40, :43, and :46 add data traverse_identity_law, data traverse_composition_law, and data traverse_failure_monotonicity_law, while src/v4/std/outcome.dag:49, :52, and :55 define those law carriers as empty types. That is not a behavior-driven test or a structural law proof for the new map_outcome, bind_outcome, append_non_empty, or traverse_outcome functions. Since this PR adds actual reusable std combinator behavior, the law claims need to be expressed as .dag TestClaim / AlgebraicLaw rows or removed/staged with a tracked gate until the law-checking surface can consume them. TESTING.md’s long-term shape is tests as .dag declarations with structural predicate evaluation, not marker data that can be mistaken for proof. chatgpt-review-93c98a9c-32ab-4d…

  1. LOCKED DESIGN DECISIONS — Compliant

The infer change itself preserves the high-level locked direction: cost is kept lens-side rather than embedded in compiler-core inference facts (src/v4/compiler/04_infer.dag:34), and the PR introduces no new hand-Rust surface, which stays compatible with the v4 Pure Bootstrap to Zero authority. chatgpt-review-d804560e-84b8-4c…

  1. TRACKED vs UNTRACKED DEBT — Finding

src/v4/std/outcome.dag:88 and src/v4/std/outcome.dag:93 export traverse_node and sequence_node, but both are permanent-looking APIs that always return Rejected { diagnostic: traverse_node_not_realized_diagnostic() }. The diagnostic is fail-closed, which is good, but the scaffold itself is not bounded: there is no in-file 🟡 feature:<name> / consumer:<name> marker on the functions, no owning task, and no dissolve-on-arrival trigger. The same risk is visible in the new file-effect stubs at src/v4/extdeps/file_system.dag:167 and src/v4/extdeps/file_system.dag:178, which also always reject as “not wired.” P5 requires scaffolds to carry explicit dissolution paths; a “not realized” diagnostic names the current failure mode, not the condition under which the scaffold exits. chatgpt-review-4b3140bd-43b5-41…

2.5. Top-down PM intent review

Finding. The PM-level intent is that declared algebraic laws are structurally verified, not represented by opaque markers: the thesis’s Tier 3 claim includes “operations obey declared algebraic laws,” and the substrate direction says operations fall out of modeled structure rather than being declared separately. chatgpt-review-a9f7528d-4055-49…

The diff dilutes that intent by adding empty law-witness carriers and data rows (src/v4/std/outcome.dag:40, src/v4/std/outcome.dag:49) without tying them to the actual traverse/map/bind functions or to a law-checking TestClaim. A worker following this faithfully could treat the presence of traverse_identity_law as a law receipt even though no structural check exists. The fix is to either make these real algebraic-law claims over the functions or stage them behind an explicit tracked gate.

3. Verdict

REQUEST_CHANGES

The infer lens cleanup and explicit file-effect direction are good, but the new std/outcome substrate exports accumulation/traversal/law surfaces that are not yet structurally representable, tested, or dissolution-tracked. Because these are std/substrate shapes that downstream consumers will copy, the fixes should land before merge rather than becoming follow-on cleanup.

…ommitment 4)

P3 commitment 4 (per docs/design-v4-compiler-homomorphism.md): compiler
core must not import specific lens names. 04_infer.dag was importing
v4.lens.cost { SymbolicCost } and carrying cost: SymbolicCost as a
field on InferredFacts. That makes cost-lens a compile-core fact
rather than a lens-side dimensional projection over InferredTree.

Salvaged from PR #3441 (Worker C / tidy-eagle-109, Wave-1) which
authored this fix correctly. The rest of #3441 carried changes that
need re-doing under the post-Pass-B / post-Practice-11 framing
(extdeps/file_system.dag NodeFileBinding boundary violation;
std/outcome.dag using legacy Outcome shape; NodeOutcomeFold.step
seeing Outcome<R> instead of R). Those land in a separate Wave-2
correction; this PR pulls out the one piece that's clean,
self-contained, and a real P3-violation removal worth landing on
its own.

Changes (4 hunks, src/v4/compiler/04_infer.dag only):
- Header // Consumes: line — strip v4.lens.cost
- Import block — remove import v4.lens.cost { SymbolicCost }
- Type InferredFacts — remove cost: SymbolicCost field
- RULING-1 comment — update 'cost/inhabitance coordinates remain T-9/T-12 bridged' → 'inhabitance coordinates remain T-9 bridged' (T-12 was the cost-lens task; no longer referenced from infer)

Other fields kept:
- inhabits: AlgebraRef — algebra inhabitance is a real grounding fact
- descent: TerminationProof — termination is a semantic validity
witness for grounding, NOT a cost/complexity projection (would
potentially be renamed descent_witness for clarity in a follow-up,
but the existing name is not a P3 violation; out of scope here)

Cost / complexity / SymbolicCost remains a legitimate concept; it
lives lens-side per the lens framework (P3 commitment 4 + Q14b
rejection of cost-lens-driven compile-core selection in the v4 design
doc). validate_then_compile can gate on complexity via a required
lens; coercion_fold cannot consult it.

Closing as part of Wave-1 disposition. The C1 piece is cherry-picked to PR #3445.

Three-way split per the Wave-1 disposition analysis:

Why C2 + C3 close + redo

Per Practice 11 (PR #3444):

C2 — concept-home boundary violation (the canonical Practice 11 companion example). extdeps/file_system.dag should model the external file-system resource. It should NOT know about compiler Node. The NodeFileBinding { node: Node, path: FilePath } carrier crosses the boundary from "resource model" into "compiler provenance" — the relation is real, but it belongs in std/artifact.dag / std/projection.dag / ingest-side, NOT in the resource model. Practice 11 companion now codifies this; the design-time discipline is "before adding a field referencing a type outside the file's concept-home, confirm the field belongs in this concept-home."

C3 — pre-Pass-B Outcome shape + combinator-vs-algebra single-authority split.

  • std/outcome.dag codified the legacy Produced / Rejected{diagnostic} shape; the ratified shape per PR design: Pass A + Pass B amendments — strict simplification + primitive unification #3443 Q11 is Accepted{value, diagnostics} | Rejected{diagnostics: NonEmpty}. New scaffolds must not add legacy callsites; the 43-callsite migration is a single substrate task, not a creeping debt.
  • NodeOutcomeFold.step: fn(Outcome<R>, Edge, Node) -> Outcome<R> gives the algebra failure-policy authority. Per the ratified Q4 + the openai-pro single-authority finding (addressed in PR design: Pass A + Pass B amendments — strict simplification + primitive unification #3443), the combinator owns StageDiagnosticPolicy; the algebra is a pure success-accumulator fn(R, Edge, R) -> Outcome<R>. Single authority for failure handling.
  • map_node_outcome was reintroduced — explicitly forbidden in Ratified Q11 (it duplicates bind_outcome). Pure Practice 11 parametric-duplication finding.

What lands separately

Wave-2 successor workers (corrected briefs):

  • Wave-2-C2 — fresh extdeps/file_system.dag with only resource/effect modeling (no Node import); Node↔File provenance moves to std/artifact.dag or ingest-side. Pre-existing Node violations in extdeps surfaced as separate findings, NOT precedent.
  • Wave-2-C3 — fresh std/outcome.dag against ratified Outcome shape + bind_outcome as single bind (no map_node_outcome); NodeOutcomeFold.step: fn(R, Edge, R) -> Outcome<R> (combinator owns policy); the 43-callsite Outcome-shape migration as a bounded single sweep.

The substance from this PR (file resource/effect carrier shapes, traverse-law witness placeholder thinking, StageDiagnosticPolicy two-variant policy) carries forward as reference for the Wave-2 workers.

C1 cherry-picked to PR #3445 — that one is the salvaged piece worth landing on its own. The rest gets re-done.

Thank you to tidy-eagle-109 + swift-dove-578 for the work; C1 lands, C2 + C3 rebuild against the corrected briefs.

* v4 test claims: drop cost field from InferredFacts constructions (cursor exploratory)

cursor flagged on PR #3445 that the InferredFacts cost-field removal
in 04_infer.dag leaves two claim scaffolds constructing
InferredFacts { cost: ... } and assumed they were inert. They are
not — both are scaffold-data files that construct InferredFacts
values; v2-compile would fail without this cleanup.

FIX (same PR, atomic with the 04_infer.dag change):

src/v4/test/claim/manual/infer_emit_compile_anchor.dag:
- Header // Owns: drop anchor_stub_cost
- Header // Consumes: drop lens/cost.dag
- import v4.lens.cost { SymbolicCost, UnknownCost } removed (now unused)
- data anchor_stub_cost: SymbolicCost = UnknownCost { ... } removed
- anchor_stub_inferred_facts: cost: anchor_stub_cost field removed

src/v4/test/claim/workflow/pipeline_rejections.dag:
- import v4.lens.cost { UnknownCost } removed (now unused)
- workflow_inferred_facts(): cost: UnknownCost { ... } field removed

Final sweep verified (grep across src/v4/):
- Zero remaining 'import v4.lens.cost' statements
- Zero remaining 'cost: SymbolicCost' field constructions
- All InferredFacts {} construction sites use the new field shape

Other 'cost:' matches in src/v4/ are unrelated:
- src/v4/lens/registry.dag — lens registry entry (lens-side, fine)
- src/v4/extdeps/languages/*.dag — per-target language model
declared costs (operation_cost, instruction_cost, etc.), unrelated
  to compiler-core InferredFacts

cursor's APPROVE on PR #3445 stands; this fix is the hidden-blocker
the exploratory observation surfaced. PR now atomic + CI-safe.
