Summary

Director-ratified small free-consequence clarification per gunbc#828 (Part A wedge-claim disambiguation). Three coordinated edits at the small-clarification scope:

  1. THESIS.md:208 — new bullet in §"Free consequences": Incremental cross-run execution from purity + determinism + content-hash caching.
  2. THESIS.md:223 — extend Meta-process modeling list: Bootstrap, CI, build orchestration, dev process modeled as .dag workflows.
  3. docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md — new section ### Incremental cross-run execution after ### Automatic memoization. Explains how cross-run scope falls out of existing within-run substrate (purity + bounded execution + determinism + dependency graph + content-addressable IR).
  4. docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md — disposition table row added for cross-section consistency; marked post-R3 (indirect) — no dedicated R3 gate.

Framing — what this is, what it isn't

Small free-consequence clarification, NOT new architectural commitment. This is the disambiguated form of research-PM's wedge claim (per merged ctrl#444 §0 disentangled framing). Two parts were originally bundled:

  • Part A (this PR): thesis-edit listing three additional free consequences (incremental execution + content-hash caching + build-orchestration subsumption) alongside existing automatic parallelism + memoization + space bounds + cross-language optimization. All four already-listed free consequences flow from the same dependency-graph + purity + bounded-execution + determinism substrate; the three new ones are coherent extensions of the same substrate at cross-run scope.
  • Part B (NOT this PR — orthogonal to thesis): compile-time test execution gates emission. Per Brian on gunbc#846: orthogonal to thesis; architecture already supports it; design-doc-level concern (T-Lens-Self-Application doc / ctrl Phase 4 narrative), not THESIS edit. No Director ratification needed; not in this PR's scope.

Edit-shape preferences honored

Per Director's gunbc#828 ratification (verify-before-add discipline):

  • Primary edits in what-else-falls-out.md (new section), not bulk-adding 3 separate bullets to the tight THESIS.md:205-209 list — single bullet only added there
  • Build-orchestration extends the existing Meta-process modeling section (THESIS.md:222-226) rather than landing as a stand-alone free-consequence bullet — avoids the wedge-claim overreach reading
  • Verify-before-add executed: grep confirmed no overlap between new section content and existing §"Automatic memoization" / §"Algebraic simplification" sections (the new section is cross-run scope; existing memoization is within-run scope)

What I'm NOT claiming

  • Not "language subsumes Bazel" as new feature
  • Not new substrate scope (Substrate Mgr review off-table)
  • Not gated on T-Workflow-As-Data closure
  • Not the bundled wedge-claim from research-PM's original framing
  • Not a new R3 deliverable — the disposition table row marks it post-R3 (indirect)

Cross-section consistency

  • THESIS.md:115 catch-all "and related benefits" already covers — no edit needed
  • THESIS.md:205-209 free-consequences list — bullet added (this PR)
  • THESIS.md:222-226 meta-process modeling — extended (this PR)
  • docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md §"Incremental cross-run execution" — new section (this PR)
  • docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md disposition table — row added (this PR)

Out-of-scope finding flagged for separate cleanup: r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:200 lists "Free consequences (auto-parallelism, auto-memoization, cross-language optimization)" under "Indirect / implicit claims (no dedicated lane)" — this conflicts with the disposition table at lines 110-113 which assigns dedicated R3 lanes (T-Free-Consequences-Demonstration). The conflict predates this PR (per the 2026-04-30 R3 expansion note at lines 115-119); flagging here for separate cleanup, not addressed in this PR to keep scope contained to Part A clarification.

Cross-references

  • gunbc#828 Director ratification of Part A scope (Brian-acked via gunbc#846)
  • gunbc#339 / ctrl#444 research-PM artifact-grounding doc (merged with §0 disentangled framing as authoritative)
  • THESIS.md §"The core abstraction — program IS dependency graph" (existing thesis section the new free consequences fall out from)

Test plan

  • Director review on gunbc#828 ratification scope match
  • Verify the small-free-consequence-clarification framing reads as clarification, not new commitment
  • Verify cross-section consistency (THESIS bullet + Meta-process + what-else-falls-out section + mapping table)
  • Verify no overlap with existing §"Automatic memoization" / §"Algebraic simplification" sections

…ion table

Cross-section consistency follow-up to thesis-edit Part A (incremental
execution + content-hash caching free-consequence + Meta-process
build-orchestration extension). The disposition table mirrors THESIS
§"Free consequences" — adding a row for the new bullet so the mapping
stays in sync with THESIS:208 + what-else-falls-out.md
§"Incremental cross-run execution".

Disposition: post-R3 (indirect) — no dedicated R3 gate; the consequence
falls out from existing Tier 1 + Tier 2 commitments (purity, determinism,
content-addressable IR). Adding an R3 deliverable would exceed the
small-free-consequence-clarification scope ratified by Director on
gunbc#828.

APPROVE — Documentation-only change. Adds "Incremental cross-run execution" as a free consequence in THESIS.md:208, a corresponding row in the r2-r3 mapping table, and a §section in what-else-falls-out.md that derives it from the already-stated purity + determinism + dependency-graph substrate. Adds "build orchestration" to the Meta-process bullet at THESIS.md:223. Internally consistent (mapping row points at THESIS:208 and the new §; status marked post-R3 indirect, which matches the "falls out" framing). No code, no substrate, no invariants touched.

…tives

Per Director review on gunbc#828: rephrase the new free-consequence
bullet to ground in THESIS-established primitives (purity + bounded
execution + dependency graph) rather than "determinism + content-hash
caching" which weren't established THESIS primitives. Mapping table
row updated to match.

Discipline: Part A scope is small free-consequence clarification, NOT
new primitive vocabulary. Determinism is implied by purity for the
relevant scope. Content-hash caching is the mechanism enabling the
consequence — belongs in the deeper what-else-falls-out.md treatment
(left as-is per Director "deeper section can keep 'determinism' /
'content-hash' as expository terms").

Auto-review APPROVE noted at sha 43f405ae; subsequent commit 4b57388d3 only narrows bullet wording (no semantic change to APPROVE-able content)

The scheduled api-review correctly verified the doc-only nature of the change at sha 43f405ae. Subsequent fix-forward commit 4b57388d3 (per Director scope-tightening review on gunbc#828) rephrased the THESIS.md:208 bullet RHS from purity + determinism + content-hash caching to purity + bounded execution + dependency graph — grounding the bullet in THESIS-established primitives rather than introducing new primitive vocabulary. Mapping table claim column updated to match.

The doc-only / no-code / no-substrate / no-invariants framing the auto-review verified is preserved. Bullet wording tightened, scope unchanged. If a subsequent api-review fires on 4b57388d3, the same APPROVE basis should apply.

Awaiting Director ready-signal on gunbc#828 before merge attempt per feedback_wait_for_ready_on_fix_forward.

1. Story of the diff

This PR is documentation-only, and it clarifies two thesis-level claims rather than changing compiler behavior. First, it promotes “incremental cross-run execution” into the THESIS free-consequences list at THESIS.md:208, then anchors that claim in the R2/R3 mapping table as post-R3 indirect, explicitly saying there is no dedicated R3 gate and that any demonstration is optional post-R3 at docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112. The new subsection in docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:405-437 explains the mechanism: purity, bounded execution, determinism, dependency provenance, and content-addressable inputs let the runner reuse prior subgraph results across runs. Separately, the meta-process modeling bullet broadens the modeled workflow scope from “Bootstrap, CI, dev process” to include “build orchestration” at THESIS.md:224.

2. Invariant categories

  1. LAYER MODEL — N/A. The diff does not touch substrate types, Dag, cross-pass carriers, variants, fields, or implementation code; it only edits thesis prose and a thesis mapping table (THESIS.md:208, THESIS.md:224, docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112, docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:405-437).
  2. INVARIANTS.md + modeling-discipline.md — Finding, NON-BLOCKING.

Principle: P4 Decidability / Tight Upper Bounds.

Quote: docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:417: - Each operation's purity and CX (bounded execution → bounded and docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:418: cache size).

The issue is that CX/bounded execution can justify a bound on a single execution, result, or cache entry, but it does not by itself bound the total persistent cache across arbitrarily many cross-run input hashes. For the thesis claim to stay structurally precise, this should either say “bounded cache entry/result size” or name the separate retention/quota fact that bounds the cross-run cache store.

  1. CODING.md — N/A. No Rust code, helper placement, method/free-function shape, error carrier, naming API, or implementation style is changed.
  2. TESTING.md — Compliant. No tests are required for this docs-only clarification: the changed mapping row explicitly marks the new claim as post-R3 (indirect), with “No dedicated R3 gate” and “demonstration optional post-R3” at docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112, so the PR does not silently promote a new behavior claim needing same-PR cementing tests.
  3. LOCKED DESIGN DECISIONS — N/A. The diff does not cite or alter a LOCKED design decision; it adds thesis/mapping prose and does not override a locked substrate target or committed implementation path.
  4. TRACKED vs UNTRACKED DEBT — Compliant. The only deferred aspect is explicitly scoped in the mapping table as post-R3 (indirect) with no dedicated R3 gate at docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112; there are no new TODOs, temporary implementation scaffolds, compatibility bridges, or duplicate authorities introduced by the diff.

3. Verdict

APPROVE_WITH_COMMENTS

The PR is clean as a thesis clarification and correctly avoids turning incremental cross-run execution into an immediate R3 gate. I would tighten the “bounded cache size” wording so the document does not imply that operation CX alone bounds total persistent cross-run cache storage.

Loop summary

Provided history does not match the prompt’s “multiple rounds” description. The attached ALL_REVIEWS.txt contains 1 review entry, from api-cli:claude, timestamped 2026-05-05T05:36:33Z; I found 0 codex reviews and 0 browser reviews in the attached review log. GitHub PR/comments/compare access returned 404, so the only defensible loop count is from the attachments.

N = 1 visible round. M ≈ 1 visible head comparison / exact commit count unavailable from provided artifacts. K = 0 codex reviews. L = 0 browser reviews. API reviews = 1. Approx elapsed time = not reconstructable beyond the single 2026-05-05T05:36:33Z review timestamp.

Current diff is small and documentation-only: 3 files, 37 additions, 1 deletion. The prior review says the PR adds “Incremental cross-run execution” to THESIS.md, adds a corresponding R2/R3 mapping row, adds a section in what-else-falls-out.md, adds “build orchestration” to the Meta-process bullet, and touches no code, no substrate, no invariants. chatgpt-review-44234ced-5e8b-43…

Forward progress evidence

Consumer enabled: none. No test, emit target, interpreter path, runner path, or generated consumer proof lands here. That matters because the project’s Boundary Discipline rule says a boundary counts as landed only when declaration, realization, and generated consumer proof exist; declaration alone is staging. chatgpt-review-abefc1e7-7696-48…

Scaffolds dissolved: none. The PR does not remove ad-hoc state, delete a bridge, shrink a scaffold, or close a dissolution trigger. P5 says progress means reducing ad-hoc state, duplicate authority, or implicit behavior; scaffolds need explicit dissolution paths. chatgpt-review-abefc1e7-7696-48…

Invariants graduated: none. No recurring finding is promoted into INVARIANTS.md; the prior review explicitly says no invariants were touched. chatgpt-review-44234ced-5e8b-43…

The real accomplishment is narrower: documentation alignment. The PR makes the thesis, the R2/R3 mapping, and the “what else falls out” essay agree with each other about an incremental cross-run execution claim, and it scopes that claim as “post-R3 indirect.” That is useful bookkeeping, but it is not consumer progress.

Debt accumulation evidence

This PR adds claim surface area without a consumer. The new thesis claim says incremental cross-run execution falls out of purity, determinism, dependency graph, and content-hash caching; the mapping row reportedly says there is no dedicated R3 gate and that demonstration is optional post-R3. chatgpt-review-44234ced-5e8b-43…

That is tracked enough to avoid being hidden debt, but not tracked enough to count as convergence. The debt is: “we now say this falls out, but no consumer proves it.” The model discipline’s P1/P2 framing is hostile to unconsumed declarations: constructs need grounding, and consumers define whether the boundary is real. chatgpt-review-abefc1e7-7696-48…

chatgpt-review-abefc1e7-7696-48…

The second debt item is smaller but less accounted: adding “build orchestration” to the Meta-process modeling bullet expands the thesis wording, but the available diff/review evidence does not show a corresponding mapping row, gate, consumer, or follow-up artifact for build orchestration. chatgpt-review-44234ced-5e8b-43…

No evidence in the attached history shows repeated reviewers re-flagging the same issue across rounds, because the attached history has only one review. So there is no proven loop pattern like “same bug, different file” here. The debt is not review churn; it is documentation claim debt.

Cheating signal

Not hiding. Soft-accounting, not silent cheating.

The implementer is not quietly adding code scaffolds or burying compromises in implementation. The main compromise is visible: incremental cross-run execution is labeled post-R3 indirect, with no dedicated R3 gate. That is accounting.

But the accounting is soft. “Demonstration optional post-R3” is not a dissolution trigger. It does not say what exact consumer will eventually make the claim real. Under P5, a scaffold needs a specific, checkable dissolution condition; otherwise it becomes failure-to-dissolve debt. chatgpt-review-abefc1e7-7696-48…

The most recent fix is not structural. It is a prose reconciliation. That is acceptable for a docs clarification PR, but another round of prose review will not turn the claim into correctness. Only a consumer or a concrete follow-up artifact will.

Path to convergence

Do not keep iterating on this PR unless the next change does one of these concrete things:

  1. Add a real follow-up artifact for incremental cross-run execution: for example, a ROADMAP or thesis-mapping item named something like T-Incremental-Cross-Run-Demo, with acceptance criteria that name the first consumer: content-hash keying, dependency invalidation, and one .dag TestClaim / runner path / interpreter cache path that proves changed inputs only re-execute dependent subgraphs.
  2. Either remove “build orchestration” from this PR’s scope, or add equivalent accounting for it: the first .dag workflow consumer or a tracked post-R3 artifact that says what makes “build orchestration modeled as .dag workflow” true.
  3. Replace “demonstration optional post-R3” with a firmer debt shape: “post-R3 tracked; not a live capability until consumer X lands.”

For the current PR, those are not necessary to merge because no substrate or code shape is being polluted. The acceptable debt to carry is: the thesis now contains two expanded claims whose consumer proof is deferred. That debt should be tracked in a follow-up roadmap/design artifact, not chased through another natural-language review round.

Meta-verdict

⚖️ SHIP_WITH_DEBT — diminishing returns. Merge the docs clarification, but carry a named follow-up for the missing consumer proof. Another review round on the same prose will not add value.

BLOCKING (2)

Root Cause

  • docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md Cross-run caching is promoted from within-run memoization without modeling cache-key equality, collision handling, or retention policy -> add those structural run-state facts or narrow the section to optional post-R3 reuse without precise invalidation or size guarantees.

⚠️ The new thesis commitment needs cache semantics tightened before it can guide downstream work.

APPROVE_WITH_COMMENTS noted; finding deferred to follow-up PR alongside line 200 cleanup

Verdict APPROVE_WITH_COMMENTS at sha 4b57388d. NON-BLOCKING finding under §"INVARIANTS.md + modeling-discipline.md / P4 Decidability":

  • Finding: docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:417-418 parenthetical (bounded execution → bounded cache size) could be read as bounding total persistent cross-run cache; CX/bounded execution properly bounds per-entry/per-result size, not total cache store across arbitrarily many input hashes
  • Suggested fix: clarify per-entry scope (e.g., "bounded result size" or "bounded cache entry size") OR name the separate retention/quota fact bounding total store size

Disposition: deferred to follow-up PR

Reasoning:

  1. Finding is NON-BLOCKING per reviewer
  2. Director ratified what-else-falls-out.md as unchanged at sha 4b57388d (gunbc#828) — adding a fix-commit would change ratified scope and require re-verification
  3. Catalog-doc-as-permissive-expository was the explicit scope distinction we agreed on (Director's "deeper section can keep 'determinism' / 'content-hash' as expository terms"); this finding is in that scope
  4. PM has a follow-up PR queued for r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:200 cleanup (out-of-scope finding flagged in docs(thesis): Part A clarification — incremental cross-run execution + build-orchestration in Meta-process modeling #1738 description); the cache-bound wording-tightening folds into the same follow-up cleanly

The finding IS substantively valid — total cache store doesn't fall out of CX — and the follow-up PR will address it concretely (one-word tightening from "bounded cache size" to "bounded result size" or equivalent). Tracking it in the queue, not silent.

Meta-verdict SHIP_WITH_DEBT accepted; follow-up PR scope expanded for consumer-proof debt accounting

Meta-review verdict at sha 43f405ae: SHIP_WITH_DEBT — merge the docs clarification, carry a named follow-up for missing consumer proof, don't iterate further on this PR. Substantively right read.

Merge disposition

Per meta-review's "merge the docs clarification" directive, PR proceeds as-is once v3 lands green. No fix-commits in #1738 beyond the Director-ratified scope at 4b57388d3. The substantive findings (consumer-proof gap, soft-accounting in disposition row, build-orchestration accounting parity) are real but the meta-review explicitly says they "are not necessary to merge because no substrate or code shape is being polluted."

Follow-up PR scope — expanded to absorb consumer-proof debt

Original follow-up scope (queued before this meta-review):

  1. r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:200 stale-enumeration cleanup
  2. what-else-falls-out.md:417-418 cache-bound wording tightening (per gpt-5-5-pro NON-BLOCKING precision finding)

Expanded scope per meta-review SHIP_WITH_DEBT requirements:

  1. Tighten r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md row disposition: replace "demonstration optional post-R3" with firmer debt shape per meta-review's recommendation form: "post-R3 tracked; not a live capability until consumer X lands." Names the specific consumer that would make the claim real (e.g., a .dag TestClaim demonstrating "changed inputs only re-execute dependent subgraphs" + runner path + interpreter cache path).

  2. Build-orchestration accounting parity: the meta-review's second debt item flags that "build orchestration" added to Meta-process modeling lacks a corresponding mapping row / gate / consumer. The natural consumer is T-Workflow-As-Data (R3 lane . #17 already in scope). Follow-up PR adds explicit cross-reference from the Meta-process bullet to the lane, and either a mapping row or a deliberate "subsumed by T-Workflow-As-Data lane" annotation, so the accounting is explicit not implicit.

  3. Optional: named ROADMAP / thesis-mapping artifact for T-Incremental-Cross-Run-Demo (or equivalent name) if PM judgment + Director read both agree it merits a separate trackable artifact rather than absorbing into existing T-Workflow-As-Data scope. PM-flexible; will surface to Director (gunbc#828) before authoring.

…ING findings

Two findings on PR #1738 review cycle bundled into one commit (single
re-verification minimizes review thrash):

1. BLOCKING (line 431-433, inline review): "same input hash ⇒ same
result" treats hash equality as semantic equality, but ContentHash
is fixed-length and not injective; violates P1 modeling
faithfulness + P3 fail-closed. Fix: rephrase to "same structural
inputs ⇒ same result, by purity + determinism", with explicit note
   that hash is the lookup mechanism, not the equivalence relation;
collision-safety is implementation, not thesis claim.

2. NON-BLOCKING (line 417-418, gpt-5-5-pro precision finding,
originally deferred): "bounded execution → bounded cache size"
conflates per-result size (which CX bounds) with total cache store
(unbounded across distinct input hashes). Fix: rephrase to
"bounded per-result size; total cache store retention is a
separate policy fact, not derived from CX". Pulled forward from
follow-up PR since re-verification fires anyway for the BLOCKING.

BLOCKING addressed at e095b19; NON-BLOCKING (line 417-418) bundled into same fix-forward

BLOCKING finding at line 431-433 verified valid: the wording "same input hash ⇒ same result" treated hash equality as semantic equality, which ContentHash/hash being non-injective (fixed-length) makes false. Violates INVARIANTS P1 modeling faithfulness (claim doesn't faithfully describe collision-possible hash) + P3 fail-closed (silent assumption "no collisions" not surfaced).

Fix at e095b19

Line 431-433 (BLOCKING) — rephrase content-hash caching bullet:

Before:

caches by hash(structural_form, input_hashes). Cache lookup is structural; cache invalidation is precise (same input hash ⇒ same result), not heuristic

After:

caches by hash(structural_form, input_hashes) as the lookup key. Cache invalidation is precise (same structural inputs ⇒ same result, by purity + determinism), not heuristic [...]. Hash is the lookup mechanism; semantic equivalence is structural equality of inputs, not hash equality (collisions are an implementation concern handled at lookup verification, not a load-bearing thesis claim).

Key changes:

  • "same input hash ⇒ same result" → "same structural inputs ⇒ same result, by purity + determinism" — semantic claim now grounded in established primitives, not hash injectivity
  • Explicit hash-as-lookup-mechanism vs. semantic-equivalence-as-structural framing — surfaces the collision-implementation concern as such, not silently assumed away
  • Collision-safety relocated to "implementation concern handled at lookup verification" — out of thesis-claim scope

Line 417-418 (NON-BLOCKING precision, originally deferred) — pulled forward into same commit since re-verification fires anyway:

Before: bounded execution → bounded cache size
After: bounded execution → bounded per-result size; total cache store retention is a separate policy fact, not derived from CX

Captures the per-entry-vs-total distinction the gpt-5-5-pro reviewer flagged.

Director re-verification needed

Adding this commit invalidates the prior ready-signal at 4b57388d3. PM not merging until Director re-verifies at e095b1996 per feedback_wait_for_ready_on_fix_forward. Notification sent to gunbc#828.

Follow-up PR scope updated

Line 417-418 wording-tightening now in #1738 (no longer needs follow-up). Remaining follow-up scope:

  1. r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:200 stale-enumeration cleanup
  2. (per SHIP_WITH_DEBT meta-review) firmer disposition shape + build-orchestration accounting parity + optional named ROADMAP artifact for T-Incremental-Cross-Run-Demo

BLOCKING already addressed at e095b19 — relay arrived after fix-forward

Verified at current HEAD e095b1996: this BLOCKING is already resolved. The fix-forward I pushed for the line 431-433 BLOCKING also tightened line 417-419 by pulling forward the gpt-5-5-pro NON-BLOCKING precision finding (originally deferred, included here since re-verification was firing anyway).

Current line 417-419 reads:

- Each operation's purity and CX (bounded execution → bounded
per-result size; total cache store retention is a separate
policy fact, not derived from CX)

How this addresses the BLOCKING

The reviewer's finding: "bounded-cache-size claim derives persistent cache bounds from bounded execution, but the thesis only bounds accepted program evaluation; cross-run storage still needs a modeled retention/eviction or bounded-run-state policy."

Current wording explicitly:

  1. Says "per-result size" — bounds per-cache-entry size (which CX legitimately bounds via complexity), NOT total persistent cache store
  2. Says "total cache store retention is a separate policy fact" — explicitly separates total-cache-bounds from per-result-bounds, surfacing the retention/eviction policy as out-of-thesis-scope
  3. Says "not derived from CX" — explicitly disclaims that CX (bounded execution) implies total-cache-bounds

The reviewer's concern was the silent assumption that bounded execution ⇒ persistent cache bounds. My fix surfaces this assumption as false: total cache retention is a separate policy fact, not derived from CX. That matches the reviewer's recommended fix shape ("modeled retention/eviction or bounded-run-state policy" lives outside the thesis claim).

No new fix needed

e095b1996 already addresses both line-417 BLOCKING + line-431 BLOCKING + line-417 gpt-5-5-pro NON-BLOCKING precision in one commit. Standing by for Director re-verification at the new sha (notification to gunbc#828 sent).

Codex BLOCKING already addressed at e095b19 — same root concern as the two prior inline BLOCKING findings; relay arrived after fix-forward

Verified at HEAD e095b1996. The codex review at sha 4b57388d flagged the cache-semantics root cause that the two prior inline BLOCKING relays also caught (line 417 + line 431). My fix-forward at e095b1996 bundles all three in one commit since they share the same structural concern.

How e095b19 addresses each codex BLOCKING sub-concern

Sub-concern 1: "cache-key equality" — addressed at line 428-433:

- **Content-hash caching** — deterministic execution +
  content-addressable inputs means a pure expression's result
caches by `hash(structural_form, input_hashes)` as the lookup
key. Cache invalidation is precise (same structural inputs ⇒
same result, by purity + determinism), not heuristic [...]

The cache-key equality semantic is now grounded in structural input equality + purity + determinism, NOT hash equality. Hash is the lookup mechanism; equivalence is structural. Cache-key equality is well-defined.

Sub-concern 2: "collision handling" — addressed at line 434-437:

Hash is the lookup mechanism; semantic equivalence is structural
equality of inputs, not hash equality (collisions are an
implementation concern handled at lookup verification, not a
load-bearing thesis claim).

Collisions are explicitly surfaced as an implementation concern (lookup verification), not silently assumed away. The thesis claim does not depend on hash injectivity.

Sub-concern 3: "retention policy" — addressed at line 417-419:

- Each operation's purity and CX (bounded execution → bounded
per-result size; total cache store retention is a separate
policy fact, not derived from CX)

Total cache store retention is explicitly called out as a separate policy fact, not derived from CX/bounded execution. No silent assumption that bounded execution ⇒ persistent cache bounds.

Codex's recommended remedy already taken

The codex review's recommended fix shape: "add those structural run-state facts or narrow the section to optional post-R3 reuse without precise invalidation or size guarantees."

The e095b1996 fix takes the second path explicitly:

  • "Precise invalidation" claim narrowed to structural-equality-precision (well-defined), not hash-equality-precision (would require injectivity)
  • "Size guarantees" claim narrowed to per-result size (CX bounds this), not total cache store (separate policy fact)
  • Section disposition (post-R3 indirect, no dedicated R3 gate) preserved

The thesis claim now bounds what it can rigorously claim and surfaces what's out-of-scope (collision handling, retention policy) as such. Codex's "narrow the section" path has been taken.

No new fix needed

e095b1996 resolves all three BLOCKING relays in one commit. Standing by for Director re-verification (notification at gunbc#828 sent before this codex relay arrived).

APPROVE — Docs-only change. Adds a coherent "incremental cross-run execution" entry to the free-consequences list, derives it explicitly from already-committed substrate (purity + bounded execution + determinism + dependency graph), and is careful about the things that often get muddled: it separates per-result CX bounds from cache-retention policy, and separates hash-as-lookup from structural equality as the semantic criterion. Mapping table entry is consistent (post-R3 indirect, no dedicated gate). The THESIS Meta-process bullet edit (adding "build orchestration") is a one-word scope clarification consistent with dag run already being the primary execution path. No invariant or modeling-discipline concerns in the diff.

1. Story of the diff

This PR is a documentation clarification that promotes incremental cross-run execution from an implicit consequence of existing compiler commitments into an explicit thesis/mapping item. THESIS.md:208 adds it to the “free consequences” list, while docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112 classifies it as a post-R3 indirect consequence rather than a new R3 gate. The new subsection in docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:405-437 explains the mechanism: purity, deterministic bounded execution, and dependency provenance make pure subgraphs cacheable across runs by structural/input identity. Separately, THESIS.md:224 widens the meta-process modeling claim from bootstrap/CI/dev process to include build orchestration as .dag workflows.

2. Invariant categories

  1. LAYER MODEL — Compliant. The diff does not introduce or mutate substrate types, Dag fields, variants, or compiler passes; it frames the new thesis claim as derived from existing primitives at THESIS.md:208 (“purity + bounded execution + dependency graph”) rather than adding a new authority.
  2. INVARIANTS.md + modeling-discipline.md — Finding, NON-BLOCKING. docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:417-418 says Each operation's purity and CX (bounded execution → bounded cache size). The “bounded execution → bounded cache size” jump is too strong for cross-run caching: bounded execution/CX can bound work or per-entry/result size, but total persisted cache size across arbitrarily many prior run-states needs an additional retention bound, finite history model, or explicit cache policy. This is a P4 / tight-upper-bound wording issue, not a substrate violation; the likely fix is to say “bounded per-entry/result size” or to name the policy that bounds total cache cardinality.
  3. CODING.md — N/A. The diff is documentation-only; it adds no Rust functions, helpers, result shapes, methods, or impurity surfaces.
  4. TESTING.md — Compliant. No tests are required for this docs-only clarification because docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112 explicitly scopes the claim as “post-R3 (indirect)” with “No dedicated R3 gate” and an optional post-R3 demonstration, rather than landing new executable behavior.
  5. LOCKED DESIGN DECISIONS — N/A. No changed line adds, removes, or contradicts a LOCKED design marker; the touched thesis lines are additive clarifications at THESIS.md:208 and THESIS.md:224.
  6. TRACKED vs UNTRACKED DEBT — Compliant. The only deferred surface is tracked in the mapping table at docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112 as “post-R3 (indirect)” with its dependency on existing Tier 1 + Tier 2 commitments; the diff does not add TODOs, scaffolds, temporary APIs, or bridge representations.

3. Verdict

APPROVE_WITH_COMMENTS

The PR is structurally clean and appropriately scopes incremental cross-run execution as an indirect consequence rather than new substrate work. I would tighten the “bounded cache size” wording before relying on this section as a thesis receipt, because total cross-run cache growth is not bounded by operation CX alone.

Auto-review APPROVE noted at sha e095b199 — fix-forward validated against the BLOCKING-relay concerns

Clean APPROVE at HEAD e095b199. Reviewer specifically validates the structural tightening from the fix-forward:

  • ✅ "separates per-result CX bounds from cache-retention policy" — line 417-419 fix
  • ✅ "separates hash-as-lookup from structural equality as the semantic criterion" — line 428-437 fix
  • ✅ "derives it explicitly from already-committed substrate (purity + bounded execution + determinism + dependency graph)" — Director's scope-tightening rephrase + my e095b19 structural framing both holding
  • ✅ Mapping table consistency confirmed (post-R3 indirect, no dedicated gate)
  • ✅ "No invariant or modeling-discipline concerns"

This validates the e095b19 fix-forward against the cache-semantics root concern that the three prior BLOCKING relays (codex meta-review + 2 inline) converged on. Standing by for Director re-verification at e095b19 + v3 green.

APPROVE_WITH_COMMENTS at stale sha 4b57388d; finding already addressed at HEAD e095b199

The single NON-BLOCKING finding (what-else-falls-out.md:417-418 "bounded cache size" precision) was the gpt-5-5-pro precision concern I originally deferred to follow-up; pulled forward into the e095b19 fix-forward when the BLOCKING line 431-433 fix-cycle fired (single re-verification covers both).

Current line 417-419 reads:

- Each operation's purity and CX (bounded execution → bounded
per-result size; total cache store retention is a separate
policy fact, not derived from CX)

Captures the exact distinction the reviewer flagged: per-result/entry size is bounded by CX, total persisted cache size needs a separate retention policy fact.

A subsequent claude-opus-4-7 auto-review at e095b199 confirmed the fix lands cleanly:

"separates per-result CX bounds from cache-retention policy" — #issuecomment-4376844902 validation

No further action — finding already resolved. Standing by on v3 green for merge (Director re-ratified at e095b19 already).

1. Story of the diff

This PR clarifies that incremental cross-run execution is a thesis consequence of already-established primitives, not a new independent substrate lane: THESIS.md:208 adds it to the “free consequences” list, and docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112 classifies it as post-R3 indirect with no dedicated R3 gate. The detailed mechanism lands in docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:407-441: purity, bounded execution, determinism, structural identity, and dependency provenance enable cross-run content-hash caching and incremental re-execution, while cache retention policy and hash-collision handling are explicitly kept out of the load-bearing thesis claim. The PR also tightens the meta-process modeling statement by adding build orchestration to the .dag workflow surface at THESIS.md:224.

2. Invariant categories

  1. LAYER MODEL (substrate vs implementation).

N/A — docs-only diff; no Dag fields, substrate types, compiler passes, or implementation APIs are changed. The substrate-facing claim is prose-scoped to existing commitments at docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:439-441.

  1. INVARIANTS.md + modeling-discipline.md.

Compliant — Modeling Faithfulness / facts-flow-forward are respected: the new cross-run claim is grounded in existing facts the compiler/runner already has, namely structural identity, transitive dependencies, and purity/CX at docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:414-419, then summarized as existing dependency-graph + purity + determinism substrate at docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:439-441. The hash paragraph also avoids making hash equality the semantic authority by stating structural equality is the semantic criterion and collisions are handled at lookup verification, docs/thesis/what-else-falls-out.md:434-437.

  1. CODING.md.

N/A — no Rust code, helper placement, error/result shape, method/free-function choice, or naming surface is changed.

  1. TESTING.md.

Compliant — no executable behavior is introduced, and the mapping row explicitly avoids creating an unbacked near-term test obligation: docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112 says there is “No dedicated R3 gate” and that demonstration is optional post-R3.

  1. LOCKED DESIGN DECISIONS.

N/A — the diff does not modify or reference a line marked locked. The only disposition change is the explicit post-R3 indirect mapping at docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112.

  1. TRACKED vs UNTRACKED DEBT.

N/A — no scaffold, TODO, temporary API, or bridge is added. The future scope is bounded as post-R3/indirect rather than introduced as an implementation scaffold at docs/thesis/r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112.

3. Verdict

APPROVE. The diff is documentation-only, and the new thesis claim is carefully scoped to existing primitives rather than creating a parallel authority or untracked implementation obligation. The build-orchestration wording is a straightforward thesis-surface clarification with no substrate or testing fallout visible in the diff.

Second APPROVE at HEAD e095b199 (gpt-5-5-pro) — clean across all six invariant categories

gpt-5-5-pro now returns clean APPROVE at e095b199 (vs APPROVE_WITH_COMMENTS at stale 4b57388d). Reviewer explicitly validates the structural fixes the BLOCKING/precision findings drove:

  • "the hash paragraph also avoids making hash equality the semantic authority by stating structural equality is the semantic criterion and collisions are handled at lookup verification" — line 434-437 fix landed cleanly per Modeling Faithfulness
  • "the new cross-run claim is grounded in existing facts the compiler/runner already has, namely structural identity, transitive dependencies, and purity/CX" — line 414-419 fix lands per facts-flow-forward
  • "summarized as existing dependency-graph + purity + determinism substrate" — line 439-441 substrate framing intact
  • "No dedicated R3 gate ... demonstration is optional post-R3" — r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112 disposition row clean

Two clean APPROVEs at e095b199 (claude-opus-4-7 at #issuecomment-4376844902 + gpt-5-5-pro at #issuecomment-4376857306). Director re-ratified at e095b19 separately on gunbc#828. The cache-semantics tightening is now validated by three independent paths.

Standing by on v3 green for merge — only remaining gate.

Codex APPROVE at HEAD e095b199 — closes the loop on the codex BLOCKING from 4b57388d

Codex review at e095b199 returns ✅ no blocking concerns with explicit strengths note: "The clarified cross-run execution claim is scoped to pure hashable inputs and no longer overclaims cache-size or hash-equality semantics." That validates the fix-forward against the codex BLOCKING at sha 4b57388d (cache-semantics root cause: cache-key equality + collision handling + retention policy).

Three independent reviewers now clean at HEAD e095b199:

  • claude-opus-4-7: APPROVE (#issuecomment-4376844902)
  • gpt-5-5-pro: APPROVE (#issuecomment-4376857306)
  • codex: APPROVE — no blocking concerns (#issuecomment-4376923842)

Director re-ratified separately at gunbc#828.

CI: ci pass, fmt pass, v3 pass (7m58s); only self_host_ratchet still pending. Will merge once that closes.

…(post-#1738)

Director-ratified follow-up cleanup per gunbc#828 absorbing
SHIP_WITH_DEBT meta-review (gpt-5-5-pro 2026-05-05) on PR #1738.

Four coordinated edits:

1. r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:200-201 — delete stale "Free consequences
... no dedicated lane" row that conflicted with the disposition
table at lines 109-114; same drift pattern as the 2026-04-28
   concept-unifications retraction.

2. r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:112 — firmer disposition shape on the
"Incremental cross-run execution" row: replace "demonstration
optional post-R3" with "post-R3 tracked, not a live capability
until consumer artifact lands"; fold in named consumer-proof
   artifact (T-Incremental-Cross-Run-Demo) + 3-criteria acceptance
   text (content-hash keying / dependency invalidation / cross-run
skip proof) per Director (ii) ratification at #issuecomment-4377737254.
   Single-row preserves per-THESIS-claim mapping-table convention;
resolves codex BLOCKING (1) deeper category-mixing concern at
   structural pattern level.

3. r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md — new "Disposition table — Meta-process
modeling" section with single row mapping "Build orchestration
   modeled as .dag workflows" → T-Workflow-As-Data R3 lane #17.
   Addresses SHIP_WITH_DEBT meta-review's build-orchestration
   accounting-parity item.

4. r2-r3-thesis-mapping.md:212 — replace fragile numeric
backreference ("see note at line 116 above") with section-name
   reference per gpt-5-5-pro NON-BLOCKING precision finding;
eliminates fragile line-number coupling that drifts with row
   insertions.

…ogy note per codex BLOCKING

PR #1785 review at sha `35742088` (codex BLOCKING): "Stale line-number
snapshot copied into the verification table → re-verify every cited
coordinate against the live file or replace brittle line numbers with
section/symbol anchors."

Verified: 2 of 14 r3-structure.md line citations drifted at HEAD:
- T-Numeric-Construction cited at :25 → actual line 30 (introductory
list) + line 87 (acceptance) + line 149 (table row)
- T-CostLens-Composition cited at :33 → actual line 34 (introductory
  list) + line 105 (acceptance)

Remaining 12 line citations verified correct at HEAD.

Fix per reviewer's recommended path (replace brittle line numbers
with section/symbol anchors):
- Both drifted citations rewritten to use section references
  (§"R3 has 18 lanes" + §"Lane structure" + §"R2 managers continue")
- Added methodology note acknowledging citation-style fragility
(line-number drift is the same pattern gpt-5-5-pro caught at line
116→117 shift in PR #1738; future sweeps should prefer
  section/symbol anchors)

Audit body's other claims unchanged; structural verification stands
at HEAD. The 2 line citations were the only drifts in the file.
