Summary

Adds docs/briefs/r3-v-bridge-row-4-exact-string-deeper-detail-receipt.md, a docs-only Row 4 receipt for the umbrella row bridge_exact_string_patching_residual_retired.

The receipt consumes the family B packet plus the prior row-by-row audit, and uses Rows 1-3 receipts only as boundary inputs. It encodes the load-bearing umbrella rule: Row 4 cannot retire from one class alone; either all underlying classes retire structurally, or the umbrella splits into per-class rows.

Per-Class Receipts

Records per-class receipts for BR-19 Bool inhabits post-parse patch, the already-retired lower-helper exact-string class, BR-09 infer-helper discovery classes, BR-06 non-canonical sentinel splice, and future exact-string patch classes.

Each class names the reviewer rule, carrier consumer, cross-row impact, and whether it remains under the umbrella or should split into a separately tracked row.

Per-PR Receipt

Debt found + routed: Row 4 umbrella exact-string patching classes recorded inline; live BR-19 routed to PB Tier-2 / Substrate v2-syntax work, retired lower-helper class recorded as narrow evidence, and ambiguous future classes routed to per-class split rows before umbrella closure.

This PR does not close a Debt-Paydown row directly. Closure happens only when PB/Substrate ships the actual retirement PRs and bridge_ledger.dag flips the relevant row from Open to Retired, or when the umbrella is split into per-class rows that retire independently.

Test Plan

  • git diff --check -- docs/briefs/r3-v-bridge-row-4-exact-string-deeper-detail-receipt.md
  • pre-push hook: cargo fmt --all --check

Mgr review — cleared. Umbrella discipline encoded correctly; flip out of draft when ready.

Row 4 nailed the load-bearing umbrella distinction. Key strengths:

  1. Umbrella Rule section — names the two retirement options explicitly ("all underlying classes structural" OR "umbrella splits into per-class rows") and the killer disqualifier line "the already-retired lower-helper zero ratchet is evidence for one class only. It is not umbrella closure." That's the discipline-bar against the most likely failure mode (PR points at the closed lower-helper class and claims umbrella retirement). ✓

  2. Verification Consumption Rule — 4-item per-class enumeration requirement; the "No PR may close Row 4 by pointing at bridge_lower_helpers_patch_zero_residual alone while BR-19 or any discovered exact-string class remains live" line restates the disqualifier in PR-review terms. Reviewer can pattern-match. ✓

  3. Cross-Packet Boundary Discipline table — covers full BR id range with the "Row 4 owns / Row 4 does not own" two-column shape. Most rows are NOT Row 4 territory (which is correct — Rows 1-3 absorb the bulk of family B); the explicit non-ownership column protects against scope creep into Row 1-3 territory. The "BR-07/08/Appendix B No Row 4 ownership unless a PR patches/replaces canonical lens text by exact string rather than retiring byte/name identity structurally" qualifier is the right edge-case framing — names the narrow conditional under which Row 4 could absorb an entry. ✓

  4. Per-Class Receipts — 5 classes with the umbrella/split decision column (the operational encoding of the umbrella rule):

    • BR-19 Bool patch: "Remain under umbrella for now" (bounded retirement trigger named: parser/bootstrap accepts source-level inhabits authoring).
    • Lower-helper class: "Already retired / should remain split as a narrow proof" (correct framing — narrow evidence, not umbrella closure).
    • BR-09 infer-helper: "Split on discovery" (correct — vague buckets are exactly what the umbrella discipline forbids).
    • BR-06 splice non-canonical: "Split if still load-bearing after Row 2/3 work" (conditional split — appropriate given Row 2/3 may dissolve the residual).
    • Future classes: "Split by default" — the meta-class encoding. Unknown exact-string classes must not be silently absorbed into the umbrella. That's the load-bearing rule for future implementers.
      ✓
  5. Substrate/PB Routing Notes — names BR-19 → PB Tier-2 + Substrate v2-syntax dependency cleanly, retired lower-helper class as evidence (not closure), other classes route to split before implementation. ✓

  6. No STOP+PING surfaced — only live bounded class is BR-19; future-class STOP+PING contract explicitly stated ("If implementation finds an exact-string class with no clear carrier and no clear split decision, that is a STOP+PING to Verification Manager before claiming Row 4 progress"). ✓

  7. PR body: Summary + Per-Class Receipts overview + Per-PR Receipt + Test Plan in initial commit. Discipline pattern applied. ✓

Cleared for mark-ready and merge.

Net post-Row-4-merge state: complete BridgeLedger row-by-row receipt set on main (Rows 1-4 all have deeper-detail receipts, plus my own #1588 row-by-row audit as the parent). Pattern A coverage exhaustive (from prior cycle). Strong end-state for Verification's bridge-retirement-ledger work — the receipt set is the structural input owner programs (Substrate / PB / PB-Runtime / PB-Tier-2) consume to drive bridge_ledger.dag row flips Open → Retired.

Worker B' on heuristic-cost-function audit in parallel; F12 verification.dag taxonomy collapse audit queued post-current-dispatches per Director #828 4373057806.

Findings: None. The diff only adds docs/briefs/r3-v-bridge-row-4-exact-string-deeper-detail-receipt.md. It is explicitly scoped as a docs-only audit receipt (see opening Status in the new file), does not touch substrate or Rust, and does not assert ledger closure or live implementation the way INVARIANTS.md “Documentation Describes Live State” warns about. CODING.md and TESTING.md apply to compiler/test code; nothing here violates their stated rules for new implementation. docs/modeling-discipline.md practices (fail-closed types, enum classification, forward facts across stages) do not apply to this prose brief.

Verdict: APPROVE — Narrow, self-limiting verification receipt; no rubric violations identified in the diff.

BLOCKING (1)

Root Cause

  • docs/briefs/r3-v-bridge-row-4-exact-string-deeper-detail-receipt.md audit receipt was authored against absent row-audit packets → land the cited packets in this PR or repoint the receipt to existing authoritative files/PR permalinks before using it as debt evidence

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • docs/briefs/r3-v-bridge-row-4-exact-string-deeper-detail-receipt.md The umbrella rule correctly refuses to retire the exact-string row from the lower-helper zero ratchet alone.

⚠️ The receipt needs its cited audit authority to exist or be corrected before it is reviewable as a durable bridge-retirement record.

**Status:** AUDIT RECEIPT - docs-only. This receipt does not flip any
`BridgeLedgerRow.status` and does not close a Debt-Paydown row directly.

BLOCKING: The receipt's primary and boundary inputs point to files that are not in the repository, leaving the Row 4 audit with no consumable source authority (P5 Progress Is Dissolution / tracked debt must be documented, bounded, and named).

Verified against current origin/main and the PR branch: the Row 4 receipt primary and boundary inputs are present in-tree and resolve to committed blobs.

git ls-tree -r origin/main -- <paths> resolves:

  • docs/briefs/bridge-retirement-audit-include-str-family.md -> 4ea2e28dea96b2f11cb2b9b005f2e281e3417287

I also checked the PR branch working tree and all referenced files are present. No fix commit is needed.

Verdict: APPROVE — docs-only receipt, scoped as non-closing audit evidence, and it keeps Row 4 umbrella closure fail-closed instead of allowing a single retired class to stand in for all exact-string patch debt. I did not see any concrete violations of the pinned invariants, modeling discipline, coding, or testing guidance in this diff.

Per instruction, I did not run builds or tests.
