Manager review — APPROVE; second Verification implementation slice

L7 Associativity activation per dispatch — same one-shot pattern as PR #1504 (Lane 1 L4 slice 1).

Substantive findings

  1. Single bounded activation — one new test r3_verification_l7_semigroup_associativity_passes_wired_associativity verifies Pass for the existing r3_l7_semigroup_associativity claim from PR feat(v3): Lane 1 per-(algebra, law) fixture matrix (NotYetImplemented receipts) #1419's matrix. Uses L7_MATRIX_SUITE constant; correct fixture/suite reference.
  2. Header comment updated — "Lane 1 L7 now exercises the wired Associativity operational witness." Documentation in sync with implementation.
  3. No fixture changes — leverages existing r3_l7_semigroup_associativity row from PR feat(v3): Lane 1 per-(algebra, law) fixture matrix (NotYetImplemented receipts) #1419's matrix; just activates the test against it. Stability invariants preserved.
  4. Identity NYI test preserved — r3_verification_l7_algebraic_law_identity_skeleton_is_nyi stays in place (next test in file). Identity correctly stays gated on lens identity-element edge per docs(r3): T-V-L4-L7-Direct readiness audit (research) #1392/docs(r3): T-V-L4-L7-Direct exhaustive (algebra, inhabitant, law) witness coverage matrix (research) #1493.
  5. run_on_larger_stack helper reused — same pattern as PR feat(v3): activate Lane 1 L4 emit/eval match slice 1 (post-W1) #1504; engineering accommodation for evaluator recursion depth.

Discipline respected

  • No substrate edits ✓
  • No new TestPredicate variants ✓
  • No new AlgebraicLawKind variants (Distributivity / etc. stay routed via INVARIANTS §P1) ✓
  • Single algebra-inhabitant scope (Semigroup) per dispatch slice 1 constraint ✓
  • OnceLock + cached_compile + run_on_larger_stack patterns reused ✓
  • ClaimResult variant-shape assertion (no message-pinning) ✓
  • 26 additions / 1 deletion — minimal scope ✓
  • Existing claim_name from feat(v3): Lane 1 per-(algebra, law) fixture matrix (NotYetImplemented receipts) #1419 matrix preserved ✓

Title fix

PR opened with placeholder title cool-crab-614; updated to feat(v3): activate Lane 1 L7 Associativity slice 1 (Semigroup<Int>).

Manager observations

  • Second Verification implementation slice landing post-feat(v3): activate Lane 1 L4 emit/eval match slice 1 (post-W1) #1504 milestone. Lane 1 L4 + L7 (one inhabitant) both activated within ~1 hour of each other.
  • Wired-vs-NYI separation preserved: Identity stays NYI test; Associativity becomes Pass test. Both coexist in same fixture file. Q3 binary-ratchet discipline preserved at the per-law level.
  • L7 follow-on slices (r3_l7_commutative_monoid_commutativity activation; full inhabitant coverage) come later per the slice progression discipline.

Cross-claim coordination

Status: approved. Flag for ready-state flip when worker satisfied with local verification (PR is in draft).

The fixture already declares r3_l7_semigroup_associativity on AlgebraicLaw(Associativity, …); that wiring is not part of this diff (it’s already on the tree). The change only adds an integration test that runs the matrix suite and asserts that claim passes.

Verdict: APPROVE — The diff only touches r3_verification_l4_l7_l5_skeleton_test.rs: it documents Lane 1 L7 Associativity coverage, introduces a single claim-name constant aligned with the existing .dag fixture, and adds one focused test that runs cached_compile + TestRunner::run_suite and asserts ClaimResult::Pass for that claim. That matches the file’s existing R3 harness style (run_on_larger_stack, find + explicit panic when the claim is missing). Nothing here introduces substrate modeling, parallel authority, or fail-closed gaps in compiler code; TESTING.md “mocks over compile” does not argue against this pattern for verification/matrix harness tests where the pipeline + runner are the unit. CODING.md allows panics in tests. No rubric violations tied to specific changed lines.

Exploratory (optional): The commit message on HEAD is WIP: cool-crab-614; squashing or renaming before merge is a hygiene preference, not a code finding from the diff.

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/r3_verification_l4_l7_l5_skeleton_test.rs The added Rust integration test is implementation-level coverage, not substrate modeling, and it directly fails if the L7 Semigroup associativity claim is missing or does not return Pass.

✅ No blocking concerns in the provided diff.
