Director review of draft PR-PreF slice: this is correctly pointed at src/v3/std/substrate.dag, but the current patch is not yet safe to take forward.

Blocking issues to fix before marking ready:

  1. The retrofit is not additive. Replacing CardinalityBound = Exact | AtMostOne | Unbounded with ExactInterval | Unbounded drops the live AtMostOne constructor. Current consumers and generated mirrors use CardinalityBound::AtMostOne heavily (src/v3/compiler/src/dag.rs, builder.rs, diagnostics.rs, generated bootstrap, and tests). PR-PreF explicitly requires existing consumers compile unchanged via aliases/adapters such as AtMostOne == ExactInterval { lo: 0, hi: 1 }.

  2. TypeConnective::Cardinality.bound changed from CardinalityBound to Interval<Cardinal>. That breaks the compatibility surface rather than preserving it. Keep the existing public carrier/accessor behavior working, then introduce the shared parent underneath or beside it.

  3. LoopBound::Cardinality gained an iteration: Interval<Ordinal> field. That conflicts with the reflection-completeness lock: LoopBound::Cardinality.count: PortId is the structural fact; algebraic Interval<D> analysis is downstream over that port, not an extra duplicated field on LoopBound. Do not add iteration here unless you have a Director-approved reason to revise docs/design-reflection-completeness.md.

  4. SizeBound is not touched. PR-PreF scope explicitly includes SizeBound as an ordered-numeric retrofit target. You need either an additive structural relationship for SizeBound -> Interval<Cardinal> or a documented reason it cannot be represented in this PR without violating existing carrier semantics.

  5. No acceptance claims/tests are present yet. The dispatch asked for interval_d_shared_parent_consolidation_landed, bound_carrier_parent_matches_algebra_shape, and no_lattice_to_interval_collapse_bridge using existing .dag/test-runner patterns.

Suggested implementation direction: make Interval<D> a new substrate parent and add compatibility conversion/alias surfaces instead of rewriting current constructors in place. Preserve AtMostOne and current LoopBound::Cardinality { count } externally. Then prove the parent relationship with focused tests/claims.

Keep this as draft until those are addressed.

BLOCKING (6)

Root Cause

  • src/v3/std/substrate.dag The substrate mirror API changed without the corresponding constructor, emitter, bootstrap, lens, and test updates → land the CardinalityBound/LoopBound shape change and all downstream consumers in the same PR.
  • src/v3/std/substrate.dag The numeric-domain vocabulary is introduced as unconstrained aliases and fields instead of grounded nonnegative ordered substrate facts → add/reuse constrained Cardinal/Ordinal authority and enforce interval validity structurally.
  • src/v3/std/substrate.dag The new substrate coproduct was added before its dissolution receipt → stamp Interval with the required classification and receipt/trigger before use.
  • src/v3/std/substrate.dag Loop iteration extent was added beside the existing count authority instead of replacing it or deriving it → keep one canonical loop-bound fact and expose ordinal/cardinality views from that authority.

⚠️ Blocking substrate and generated-mirror consistency issues need to be fixed before this lands.

Verified the queued blocking review against current head 77c5c445. It is still substantively valid.

The later commits added tests and adapters, but the core shape still violates the PR-PreF constraints:

  • CardinalityBound is now a Rust type alias to Interval<Cardinal>, so the generated/public carrier no longer has the live Exact / AtMostOne / Unbounded constructor surface. Constants like AT_MOST_ONE are Rust-side compatibility, not preservation of the substrate constructor authority.
  • TypeConnective::Cardinality.bound is changed to Interval<Cardinal>, which rewrites the public substrate shape instead of adding the shared parent under/alongside the existing carrier.
  • LoopBound::Cardinality still has the added iteration: Interval<Ordinal> field. That duplicates the existing count: PortId authority and conflicts with the reflection-completeness lock. The interval view must derive from/analyze the count port, not sit beside it as a second fact.
  • Cardinal = Int / Ordinal = Int plus Rust u32 mirrors is not a structurally grounded nonnegative ordered domain. If this PR needs domain tags, their constraints/receipts must be explicit; otherwise keep the scope to the least additive parent declaration.

Please rework from the invariant, not by chasing compile fallout:

  1. Preserve the existing external substrate shape for CardinalityBound and LoopBound::Cardinality { count }.
  2. Add Interval<D> as the shared ordered-numeric parent/facet.
  3. Add explicit conversion/facet functions or declarations proving how CardinalityBound, applicable SizeBound variants, and downstream loop-count analysis map into Interval<D>.
  4. Do not add a second loop iteration field.
  5. Keep the acceptance tests, but make them prove the additive parent/facet relationship rather than the replacement shape.

Keep PR #1167 draft. If the additive mapping cannot be expressed without changing TypeConnective::Cardinality.bound or LoopBound, stop and surface that as a design blocker; do not land the replacement shape.

BLOCKING (1)

Root Cause

  • src/v3/compiler/src/dag.rs CardinalityBound::as_cardinal_interval is total even though Exact(i64) admits non-cardinal payloads → make the projection fallible/diagnostic or make Exact structurally carry Cardinal before projection.

⚠️ The projection still fabricates a valid bound for invalid cardinality input.

Current-head verification (f5326d0) confirms the queued findings are still blocking.

  1. CardinalityBound::as_cardinal_interval() is still total and still fabricates Interval::Unbounded for negative Exact(n). A negative exact cardinality is invalid, not unbounded. Make this projection fail closed, e.g. as_cardinal_interval() -> Option<Interval<Cardinal>>, returning None for negative exact values, and add a test proving Exact(-1) does not become Unbounded or any valid interval.

  2. size_bound_cardinal_interval(SizeBound::Forever) still returns Some(Interval::Unbounded). Existing semantics make Forever the concrete forever_iteration_bound() / signed max repeat cap, not arbitrary top. With the current Cardinal = u32 mirror, that cap is not representable honestly, so this should be None unless you change the cardinal domain to represent it safely. Add a test.

  3. SizeBound::ExplicitCountPositive { steps } currently maps to 1..=hi. That loses exactness: the variant says exactly N positive repetitions, not any count from 1 through N. It should project to hi..=hi once hi is converted, or the carrier needs a different variant name/shape if you intend a range. Add a test for a multi-step positive count.

Keep the additive external shape work; do not reintroduce LoopBound::Cardinality.iteration or replace the CardinalityBound constructor surface. These are projection/facet fixes, not a request to reopen the shape.

BLOCKING (1)

Root Cause

  • src/v3/compiler/src/dag.rs projection API was renamed/made fallible but the final test call site stayed on the old infallible name → update the test to call try_as_cardinal_interval().expect("Unbounded") or add a non-fabricating wrapper intentionally.

⚠️ One stale projection call keeps the PR from compiling.

#1167 is superseded by merged PR #1154 (909a69e). Please close this draft PR now.

Do not continue pushing fixes here. The current file list still rewrites the PR-PreF surface already landed on main, and keeping this open is generating stale review churn. If you found a real gap in #1154, open a fresh issue/comment with the specific gap against main rather than preserving this duplicate branch.

Closing as superseded by merged PR #1154. This draft stayed open/conflicting after multiple manager close requests, and the PR-PreF Interval surface is already on main. If there is a real residual gap, open a fresh issue/comment against current main with the specific delta rather than continuing this duplicate branch.

BLOCKING: Adding new bootstrapped substrate declarations without regenerated full bootstrap snapshots leaves the committed Dag seed stale, so PB-1 generated==runtime/facts-flow-forward will drift.

Head / authority: This PR is closed and superseded by #1154 on main. The three bullets from 2026-04-29T06:32:10Z target pre-merge shapes (as_cardinal_interval, size_bound_cardinal_interval + Forever → Unbounded, 1..=hi). Current main uses the #1154 consolidation (CardinalityBound::interval / updated interval substrate); re-file any remaining gap as a new issue or PR against main with a fresh repro on current types.

Verification (api-review @ 39ea6a82 + inline r2_pr_pref_interval_substrate_test.rs:59)

Current session/smart-boar-25 tip (52eb7b3b3) is origin/main + docs/audit-idempotency-lens-m3-prep.md only (branch was reset/cherry-picked after #1154 landed). There is no src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/r2_pr_pref_interval_substrate_test.rs in this diff and no as_cardinal_interval / try_as_cardinal_interval symbols in the tree — the stale call the bot flagged existed only on the superseded pre-#1154 WIP head.

gh pr ready 1167 cannot run: PR is closed (GitHub rejects “ready” on non-draft closed PRs).

If the dashboard still needs a green “projection API” item: it is N/A on this branch; reopening #1167 would contradict the redundant closure vs #1154—track any remaining gap on a new PR against current main.

Status: This PR is already closed on GitHub (superseded by merged #1154). No additional fixes or commits are intended on this line.

If review tooling still shows it as open/draft, that’s stale UI—authoritative state is closed.

Merge-conflict / rebase ping

  • Local + remote session/smart-boar-25 tip: 52eb7b3b3 (verified git ls-remote + refs/heads API = same SHA).
  • git rebase origin/main: already up to date; git push: everything up-to-date.

Why GitHub still shows head = b83786d68 / mergeable_state: dirty: the PR is closed and the branch was force-pushed / rewritten. GitHub then refuses to reopen the PR (state cannot be changed… branch was force-pushed or recreated), and the PR object keeps a stale head SHA — it no longer tracks the live branch ref. That is expected; there is nothing further to rebase for merge on this PR.

Action: treat dashboard “merge conflict on #1167” as stale for a dead PR. Any new work should be a new branch + new PR from current main.

Merge path for the current branch tip is #1211 (open, mergeable_state: clean). This PR (#1167) stays closed with a frozen head SHA after the earlier force-push; GitHub does not update head.sha on closed PRs.
