Suggest adding to the docs...

1. Color gradient is bottom up.
2. How many colors?
3. "Do not include a space between colors, or this will not work."

I think it stops caring after 3 colors, but it's hard for me to be sure since the colors are so muted.

I'm very new here. I worry about just putting those words there at config-format. I mean font-family can have spaces, and doesn't even need to be quoted, so I think it is an item by item thing... Maybe it is generally a thing for "lists of options" or "comma separated lists". I dunno.

Honestly, even an example entry would help a lot for many of the options (especially when the default is blank).

Indeed. The parser for comma-seperated list doesn't support spaces after the commas, it's not specific to macos-icon-screen-color.

I'm pretty sure there's another discussion for this; I do agree that it would be very helpful though.

For 1 and 2, I'd be willing to accept a PR to improve that wording, I don't think we need an issue because if no one does it I also don't care. For point 2, we accept up to 64 colors, although it's incredibly useless at that size. As you already discovered, it's even hard to start seeing 3. But it does work.

In your example, #000000 is top, #707070 is middle, #FFFFFF is at the bottom.

I'm not qualified to answer the gradient question for sure, but it does LOOK like linear to my eyes.

The problem with being definitive is that the gradient colors are a tint on an immutable intensity map, and there's a portion near the top of the screen that is glare, where no tint comes through at all.

If this portion isn't too large, I'd say that saying “top” is good enough, since being more specific isn't going to add much more clarity.
