WalkthroughThreaded consensus CODEC execution now uses a declarative chain. Shared validation covers CLI and direct chain-builder calls. Chain validation enforces template-coordinate ordering before consensus stages. Rejects preserve the correct input header. Integration tests compare outputs and execution paths. Flip fgumi codec --threads N onto ChainSpec::single_stage(Stage::Codec, ..) -> build_for(spec)?.run(), keeping the no-threads single-threaded fast path as the in-process parity oracle. A non-consensus (--features codec only) build falls through unchanged to the retained legacy execute_threads_mode. - add_codec now guards the sort order (check_consensus_sort_order) when codec is the first stage, mirroring the legacy fast/threaded paths, so a mis-sorted input is rejected instead of silently mis-grouped by GroupByMi. - add_codec mirrors Codec::validate()'s disagreement-rate and fixed-quality phred-override bounds checks as forward-looking builder hardening (not a live-bug fix: Codec::execute already validates before ever dispatching to the chain) so the builder stays self-guarding for future callers that construct a StageOptionsBag directly. - ChainBuilder gains a raw_source_header field (captured in new(), before @pg injection) and add_codec's rejects sink now uses it instead of the @PG-augmented self.header, matching the legacy single-threaded path's provenance (rejects carry the raw input header verbatim). - New chain-vs-oracle parity tests cover full-header/record parity, multi-batch MI grouping, --rejects (records + header provenance), --stats byte-identity, the sort-order rejection, and both an end-to-end and a builder-level (bypassing Codec::execute's validate()) test for the disagreement-rate validation.

What
Route
fgumi codeconto the declarative chain builder — R3.7, completing the consensus trio (simplex #894, duplex, codec).codec --threads N(on aconsensus-feature build) now runs throughexecute_chain→ChainSpec::single_stage(Stage::Codec, …)→build_for(spec)?.run(). The no---threadssingle-threaded fast path is kept unchanged as the in-process parity oracle (legacyexecute_threads_moderetained, removed in a follow-up A→B PR once parity is trusted).Feature-gating (the consensus-trio concern)
commands::codecis gatedcodec, but the chain machinery (StageOptionsBag.codec,add_codec) is gated by the umbrellaconsensusfeature, andcodecdoes not implyconsensus. Soexecute_chainand its dispatch are#[cfg(feature = "consensus")]-gated, and on a--features codec-only build the dispatch is absent and execution falls through to the legacy threaded path (no regression, no bail). Verified:cargo check --workspace --no-default-features --all-targets, default, and--all-featuresall compile, pluscargo check -p fgumi --no-default-features --features codec.Correctness items folded in
@PG). Codec's legacy single-threaded path writes rejects with the raw reader header — it never appliesadd_pg_recordbefore the rejects writer (codec.rs), unlike duplex. Naively cloningself.header(which carries the chain's injected@PGfromChainBuilder::new) would leak that@PGinto threaded rejects, diverging from the oracle. Fixed by retaining the raw source header onChainBuilder(raw_source_header, captured innew()beforeadd_pg_record) and using it foradd_codec's rejects sink. Pinned by a rejects header-parity test (chain rejects header == oracle rejects header == raw input header). This is the same raw-header contract simplex feat(simplex): route the simplex command onto the declarative chain builder #894 uses; duplex/correct deliberately keep the@PG(their legacy appliesadd_pg_recordbefore the rejects writer), so they are intentionally left onself.header.check_consensus_sort_orderguard inadd_codec. The legacy paths call it after opening the reader;add_codecdid not, andGroupByMihas no out-of-order detection, so--threads Nwould silently mis-group a mis-sorted input. Added the guard conditional onStage::Codecbeing the source stage so a future fusedgroup → codecchain (upstream stage orders records) is not wrongly rejected.CodecOptions::validate(). Extracted the codec parameter bounds into oneCodecOptions::validate()that bothCodec::validate()(CLI pre-flight) andadd_codec(chain builder) call, so the two paths cannot drift and the builder is fully self-guarding for a future directStageOptionsBag { codec: .. }caller (e.g. a fused runall chain) that bypasses the top-levelvalidate(). This is forward-looking hardening, not a live-bug fix:Codec::execute()already validates before dispatching, and nothing else constructs the bag today.Tests
Chain-vs-oracle parity across plain,
--rejects(records + raw-header provenance),--stats(byte-compare), multi-batch (paired query-name templates), and a coordinate-sorted rejection proving the sort-order guard. Validation is pinned two ways: an end-to-end rejection on both paths, a builder-level rejection drivingChainSpec::single_stagedirectly (bypassing the CLIvalidate()), and a 10-case#[rstest]exercising every bound in the sharedCodecOptions::validate().Review
Spec Fable-reviewed against the code before implementation. A deep multi-agent gauntlet then reviewed the branch (14 raised → 3 refuted → 11 returned); all real findings addressed — the dominant one being the validation-completeness/drift concern, fixed by the shared
CodecOptions::validate()above. The gauntlet also confirmed (via an independently-verified unsound-fix flag) that applying the codec rejects-header fix toadd_duplex/add_correctwould be wrong — they correctly keep the@PG— so this PR touches onlyadd_codec. Theraw_source_headerfield is added independently here and in simplex #894 (both branch off main); whichever lands second gets a trivial rebase.Verification
cargo ci-fmt && cargo ci-lint && RUSTDOCFLAGS="-D warnings" cargo ci-doc && cargo ci-test— all green (9778 tests). Three feature legs compile. No newunsafe.Risk: output changes affect codec grouping, rejects, headers, sort order, and metrics; chain/oracle parity and targeted integration tests pin the new output.
unsafechanges: none. Memory, queue, and thread/backpressure policy changes: none.CodecOptions::validate().
