OK Class. You in the back, be quiet! It is time for your second assignment.

Lesson

Chapter 1 is pretty self-explanatory. Read the introduction and then choose your platform (Windows, OSX, or Linux). Follow the instructions for installing the Ruby interpreter on your machine. Installing software can often be a challenge and if any of this is for you, feel free to ask.

Also try his recommendations for text editors if you do not already have a preferred editor. If you do not find any of his recommendations appealing I might be able to offer a suggestion or two. You will find as your programming skills improve so will our desire for a more powerful editor. There are two paths programmers tend to take: super powerful editors with few bells and whistles or IDEs. And IDE is an integrated development environment and can best be described as bells and whistles. I am an IDE man who is competent in the powerful editors. But I am only useful in “MY” IDE, if I have to work in someone else’s IDE I am lost.

Be sure to feel out the command line in our platform. If you have any questions about the commands he uses in the book others will too, so ask.

Extra Credit

Other than installing Ruby and an editor and becoming more comfortable wth the command line there are no problems for this lesson. However I would like you to take a look at this page and tell me if it makes any sense at all.

Remember, there are no dumb questions and they help me make a better course. The also let me know you are paying attention.

OK, the next lesson will be here soon.
