refactor(cake_mhc_det): remove the mHC training names without det - #8900
Every public function and class name in the deterministic Cake mHC training package now includes det. This PR removes the names that FlashInfer 0.7.3 used for the same deterministic objects. It adds no alias module, no top-level alias and no deprecation shim.
<name> is one of these 12 functions: forward_prepare, forward_stats, forward_finish, backward_prepare, backward_finish, prepare, finish, head, head_forward, head_backward, forward_workspace_bytes, backward_workspace_bytes. With the three autograd classes, this PR removes 15 top-level names. All new names already exist on main.
Breaking change
FlashInfer 0.7.3 shipped the deterministic package under flashinfer.cake_mhc_train. The det names did not exist in 0.7.3. After this PR, code that imports the old names gets ImportError or AttributeError. To migrate, replace cake_mhc_train with cake_mhc_det_train. Replace CakeMHCTrain with CakeMHCDetTrain.
Not changed
This PR does not change kernels, routing, numerics or the deterministic package's behavior. The names without det now belong only to the experimental selectable-mode module flashinfer.experimental.cake.cake_mhc_train. That module's non-deterministic package is flashinfer.experimental.cake.cake_mhc_train_backend.
Generic constants and route helpers keep their names because the module path qualifies them. These are ARCHES, SUPPORTED_COMPUTE_CAPABILITIES, TENSOR_ALIGNMENT_BYTES, WORKSPACE_ALIGNMENT_BYTES, route_key and route_modules.
A follow-up PR will align the experimental module's deterministic= keyword and its torch.use_deterministic_algorithms(True) behavior with the other Cake training families.
Docs and tests
A note at the top of the training section in docs/api/mhc.rst now states the naming rule. The page no longer has the removed module's text or autosummary. The det facade and selector module docstrings state the same rule.
tests/cpu/mhc/test_cake_mhc_det_train_names.py replaces tests/cpu/mhc/test_cake_mhc_det_train_aliases.py. It checks that:
the removed modules cannot be imported;
no top-level name without det remains;
the det modules export only det names and the generic names above;
no det entry point takes a deterministic keyword.
The experimental API and rules tests no longer refer to the removed module.
The API-diff report for this PR lists 15 removed top-level exports and 3 removed public modules. This is intended.
Summary by CodeRabbit
API Changes
Removed the legacy non-det mHC training names and compatibility modules; these names are no longer available as aliases.
Deterministic training APIs remain available under their det-named names.
Selectable-mode training APIs are available through the experimental package. The model head has no counterpart in that namespace.
Documentation
Clarified the naming distinction between deterministic and selectable-mode training APIs.
Every public name of the deterministic mHC training package now carries
"det". The names that FlashInfer 0.7.3 used for the same objects are
removed, with no alias module and no top-level alias:
- flashinfer.cake_mhc_train -> flashinfer.cake_mhc_det_train
- flashinfer.cake_mhc_train_backend -> flashinfer.cake_mhc_det_train_backend
- flashinfer.cake_mhc_train_head_backend
-> flashinfer.cake_mhc_det_train_head_backend
- flashinfer.cake_mhc_train_* -> flashinfer.cake_mhc_det_train_*
- flashinfer.CakeMHCTrain*Function -> flashinfer.CakeMHCDetTrain*Function
The names without det now belong only to the selectable-mode module
flashinfer.experimental.cake.cake_mhc_train. Kernels, routing and numerics
do not change.
docs/api/mhc.rst states the naming rule at the top of the training section
and documents the selectable-mode entry points instead of the removed
module. A new CPU test checks that the removed names stay absent, that the
deterministic packages export only det names (and the generic constants),
and that no deterministic entry point takes a "deterministic" keyword. The
alias test is removed.
… classes
State the generic constants and route helpers that the rule does not cover,
write the migration rule as cake_mhc_train -> cake_mhc_det_train so it also
covers the module name, and drop the autosummary of the experimental
selector (its entry points are documented in the prose above). The names
test now also checks that each deterministic module exports names.
The PR removes the former non-det mHC training modules and top-level exports. It updates documentation and tests to describe the deterministic API names and the separate experimental selectable-mode API.
The package removes the non-det compatibility modules and top-level exports. The documentation describes the deterministic naming rules, states that the former names have no aliases, and points to the experimental module for selectable-mode names.
CPU tests check that the legacy names are absent and deterministic exports follow the naming and signature rules. Experimental tests stop requiring the removed aliases and check that the experimental facade is not imported at package level.
flashinfer-ai/flashinfer#8028: Introduced the det names and retained the former mHC training names as aliases; this PR removes those aliases and their identity tests.
flashinfer-ai/flashinfer#8092: Added the selectable-mode mHC training facade and tests for the legacy aliases; this PR updates those tests and points to the facade.
flashinfer-ai/flashinfer#7856: Introduced non-det mHC training head APIs and backend; this PR removes those names and directs users to the det-qualified API.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 6f9e5
The legacy API removal matches the documented migration to deterministic names. No merge-blocking issue remains; checking module attributes would provide optional additional regression coverage.

A legacy alias can remain importable without appearing in __all__, so this test would miss it. Check the module namespace as well.
