fix(cake_gdn): keep the segment transfer plane in the full saved set of the KCP GDN package - #8542
flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train_kcp is the non-deterministic KCP (context-parallel) GDN training package (BF16; contiguous, zigzag and per-document zigzag layouts; optional in-kernel q/k L2 norm; forward, backward and checkpointed calls). The bug affects save_mode="full" with save_transfer=False on a rank whose fragments split into P > 1 segments. There, the backward's merges read the M_seg^T staging plane that the forward's transfer walk wrote. But the eager forward dropped that workspace plane. The saved set kept it only under save_transfer=True, and the full backward runs no transfer walk. So the merges read a freshly allocated, never-written buffer. As a result, gradients could differ from the light form's and could change from run to run with a reused workspace. exchange="ring" requires save_transfer=False, so save_mode="full" with the ring exchange was affected too. With this PR, the full saved set carries M_seg at P > 1 in either save_transfer form. The forward allocates the plane fresh instead of taking it from the workspace pool, so there is no extra launch. The saved byte query counts the plane, and a full saved set without M_seg at P > 1 is refused. The forward output, the light form (the default) and save_transfer=True compute the same results as before. The second commit (83c26d9) updates two recompute-output test expectations for torch builds outside the verified set; no package code changes. The third commit (5b7fd0a) makes the saved byte query (gdn_saved_bytes_kcp / gdn_saved_layout_kcp) count the whole plane, P x fragments x s with s = v heads x 64 KiB, instead of (P - 1) x fragments x s (for example, 6 MiB for a 9 MiB plane at P = 3, one fragment, 48 v heads); this also changes the query value under save_transfer=True, and runtime behavior is unchanged.
This PR does not change the other Cake GDN training variants (the single-rank packages cake_gdn_train and cake_gdn_det_train and the deterministic KCP package cake_gdn_det_train_kcp); architecture coverage stays sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a.
Correctness
The repro on the timed GPUs compares gradients bitwise with the light form; most checks run with NaN-filled allocations (242 of 262 on B200, 282 of 298 on GB300, 42 of 52 on R200):
B200: previous is incorrect in 32 of 262 checks (28 non-finite, 4 finite but not bitwise equal to the light form); this PR in 0 of 262 (0 of 408 with its extra checks).
GB300: previous is incorrect in 54 of 298 checks (52 non-finite, 2 finite but not bitwise equal); this PR in 0 of 298.
R200: previous is incorrect in 4 of 52 checks (4 non-finite); this PR in 0 of 52.
With this PR, every form is finite and bitwise equal to the light form. The controls of previous (light, replay, save_transfer=True, P = 1) are correct. In the timed processes (no NaN fill), forward outputs match previous bitwise in every record. Gradients differ only in the affected forms on B200 and GB300 (dbeta, dg, dk and dv in full / a2a and full / ring). On R200, previous happened to read the right values in the timed processes (24 of 24 records equal). In the fixed forms previous can read a never-written buffer and return incorrect gradients (32 of the 36 affected-form repro checks on B200, 54 of 58 on GB300, 4 of 8 on R200), so its timings there are a timing reference only.
Conventions
Ratio = baseline ms / this PR ms. Above 1 means this PR is faster. * marks a ratio below 1.
Workload label: B23 = the timing shape (see the table legend), CPn = context parallel over n GPUs, C = contiguous. Operations: fwd, fwd+bwd, ckpt (2 x fwd + bwd).
The repro notes in the tables also use Z = zigzag, D = per-document zigzag and shape A = 4 documents 98304/65536/57344/40960 (262144 tokens), heads (16, 48).
Changed forms: full / a2a and full / ring (save_mode="full", save_transfer=False). Unchanged controls: light (the default) and light / no-st (save_transfer=False).
The shape plans P = 1 at CP1. The R200 rows labelled P = 2 force two segments per fragment. The R200 light (control) row runs at the planned P = 1.
Class per run: per group, c = this PR ms / previous ms and a = A/A ms / previous ms. This is the inverse direction of the table ratios. A run is win if every c is below 1 and below every a, REGRESSION if every c is above 1 and above every a, and parity otherwise.
A workload regresses only if two or more of its published runs are REGRESSION and its fwd+bwd and ckpt cells point the same way.
Baselines
Previous = this package on FlashInfer main 1798b52. det(main) = the deterministic KCP package flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train_kcp of the same main. Both share one process with this PR and an A/A arm (a second byte copy of previous).
Non-Cake arms:
FLA (fla-core / flash-linear-attention 0.6.0) runs as FLA-CP (its own context parallelism) or FLA-HS (head split around its single-GPU kernels).
cuDNN FROST GDN (nvidia-cudnn-frontend 1.32.1 with nvidia-cutlass-dsl 4.8.1) runs in the same head split. FROST-ck0 recomputes the states in the backward; FROST-ck64 stores them every 64 tokens.
These are the GDN training implementations with forward and backward that run on these GPUs in one process with the same packed variable-length inputs.
Each non-Cake arm's outputs and input gradients are checked against this PR on the row's inputs (finite, rel-RMS <= 1e-2, max-abs <= 2e-2 x max|ref|). The non-Cake arms ran in separate processes with this PR's default light form.
A process qualifies for a row's non-Cake cell when three conditions hold in that process:
This PR and the shown arm (the fastest arm that passes the accuracy check and drifts <= 2 %) both drift <= 2 %.
Every other arm of the process with drift above 2 % is slower than the shown arm in every group, so it cannot be the strongest arm.
The power-cap share of this PR and the shown arm is below 5 %.
If several processes qualify, the table shows the first in time and lists the others' ratios as further values.
The non-Cake ratio divides by this PR ms of the row's source run (the first run of the row with a published det(main) cell, else the first with a published table A cell, else the first run). It is published only if this PR drifts <= 2 % in that source run too.
This PR's light form did not take the same time in the non-Cake process shown in table B as in its table A run (fwd / fwd+bwd / ckpt, ms): GB300 CP4 1.300 / 3.046 / 4.948 vs 1.313 / 2.935 / 4.654; R200 CP1 0.995 / 3.566 / 3.894 vs 1.016 / 3.523 / 3.777; B200 CP4 1.076 / 2.799 / 3.862 vs 1.064 / 2.797 / 3.848; B200 CP8 fwd 0.923 vs 0.903, ckpt 4.070 vs 4.001. The non-Cake ratios include this cross-process difference, up to 6.3 % (GB300 ckpt). With both times from the same process, the GB300 light row gives fwd+bwd 1.909 (5.816 / 3.046) and ckpt 1.666 (8.243 / 4.948), against the published 1.982 and 1.771.
FlashQLA 0.1.3 needs its own environment and is not an arm. perf(cake_gdn_kcp): chain-aware value widths for the state walks of the non-deterministic KCP package #8521 measured it only at CP1 on its shape M (5 documents 12000/9000/6000/3768/2000, 32768 tokens, heads (16, 48)) on B200 and GB300. There it was slower than both FROST modes and faster than FLA in all 12 measured cells. On those B200 inputs FROST failed the accuracy check, so there FlashQLA could be the strongest passing arm. It was not measured on shape B23 or on R200.
Software: CUDA 13.4 development container, torch 2.14.1+cu130, NCCL 2.30.7, triton 3.8.0. Eager only; CUDA graph was not timed.
Cold L2: a 256 MiB fill, a synchronize and a barrier run before every timed call. An iteration's time is the slowest rank's. The statistic is the median over the timed iterations.
Table A and the first non-Cake processes run 5 palindromic groups x 2 blocks x 12 timed calls (2 warm-up) per arm. The non-Cake processes of B200 CP8, GB300 CP4 and R200 CP1 were re-timed in two more processes with 7 groups x 2 blocks x 24 timed calls (10 warm-up), the second with the arm order reversed.
A run with >= 5 % of timed samples under the software power cap on any compared arm is not claimed.
A/A ms / previous ms per published run (min / median / max): B200 0.988 / 1.001 / 1.004 (19 runs), GB300 0.995 / 1.001 / 1.004 (7 runs), R200 0.996 / 0.999 / 1.002 (23 runs).
B200 (sm_100a, 148 SMs)
vs previous (table A): no win claimed. fwd 0.996-1.011 (6 runs, all parity), fwd+bwd 0.998-1.001 (5 runs, all parity), ckpt 0.993-0.999 (8 runs: 7 parity, 1 REGRESSION). 13 of 19 runs are below 1.
REGRESSION: one run of the CP4 full / a2a ckpt cell (0.993). Its other two runs are parity. No workload regresses (0 of 6).
vs det(main) (table B): this PR is faster on all 12 published rows: fwd 1.281-1.494, fwd+bwd 1.371-1.406, ckpt 1.278-1.368.
vs non-Cake (table B): CP4 rows: fwd 2.050-2.148 (FROST-ck0), fwd+bwd 2.048-2.280 (FROST-ck64), ckpt 1.914-2.003 (FROST-ck64). CP8: light (control) fwd 1.525 (FROST-ck0), and ckpt 1.194-1.304 (FROST-ck64) over the three forms. The CP8 full / a2a and full / ring fwd rows and every CP8 fwd+bwd row are not published because this PR drifts above 2 % in their source run. No value is below 1.
GB300 (sm_103a, 152 SMs)
vs previous (table A): no win claimed. fwd 0.996-0.999 (2 runs), fwd+bwd 0.992-0.999 (3 runs), ckpt 0.992-0.998 (2 runs). All 7 runs are parity and below 1. No workload regresses (0 of 3).
vs det(main) (table B): this PR is faster on all 8 published rows: fwd 1.543-1.600, fwd+bwd 1.523-1.665, ckpt 1.474-1.475.
vs non-Cake (table B): fwd 1.875-1.950 (FROST-ck0), fwd+bwd 1.944-2.044 (FROST-ck64), ckpt 1.630-1.775 (FROST-ck64). The full / a2a ckpt row is not published (this PR drift 2.89 % in its source run). No value is below 1.
R200 (sm_107a, 208 SMs)
vs previous (table A): no win claimed. fwd 0.999-1.005 (8 runs), fwd+bwd 0.999-1.002 (8 runs), ckpt 0.999-1.001 (7 runs). All 23 runs are parity, and 5 are below 1. No workload regresses (0 of 3).
vs det(main) (table B): this PR is faster on all 9 rows:
full / a2a, P = 2: fwd 1.004, fwd+bwd 1.006, ckpt 1.005.
vs non-Cake (table B): fwd 0.406-0.644. FROST-ck0 is faster on every fwd row (FROST-ck0 0.654 ms vs this PR 0.995 ms for the light form in the same re-timed process). fwd+bwd 0.946-1.233 (FROST-ck64; below 1 only on the light / no-st, P = 2 row, 0.946-0.952). ckpt 0.984-1.356 (FROST-ck64; below 1 only on the full / a2a, P = 2 row, 0.984-0.995).
Extra memory
With save_transfer=False, the full saved set now keeps M_seg (fp32, P x fragments x v heads x 64 KiB per rank) at P > 1. The light form and P = 1 ranks save nothing extra. The saved byte query reports these bytes. In the timed rows this is 9.0 MiB on the largest rank at CP4 and CP8 (63.0 MiB over all 8 ranks at CP8) and 24.0 MiB at the forced R200 P = 2 row.
Performance tables
Previous = the non-deterministic KCP package of FlashInfer main (1798b52); this PR = this PR's package (aced27d); both run in one process with det(main) (the deterministic KCP package of FlashInfer main) and an A/A arm (a second byte copy of previous).
Table A cells: previous ms -> this PR ms of the first published run (absolutes are that run's), then the ratios previous / this PR of every published run in time order and the class per run (A/A envelope of per-group ratios: win, parity = inside the A/A spread, REGRESSION). Table B: ratio = baseline ms / this PR ms from the absolutes in the row. Regression rule: a workload regresses only if two or more published runs are REGRESSION and their fwd+bwd and ckpt cells point the same way; no workload regresses.
Legend: '*' = ratio below 1.000 (this PR slower than that baseline); 'n/p unstable' = not published (group drift above 2 % on a compared arm; for non-Cake cells see the rule under table B), listed at the end; bwd alone (fwd+bwd minus fwd) is not published. Power-cap share (timed samples under the software power cap): at most 0.0 % in every published table A run.
Shape B23: 4 documents 12288/8192/7168/5120 (32768 tokens), heads (16, 48) (q/k heads, v heads), head dim 128; every timed call runs the short causal convolution over the packed q/k/v channels (10240) and the GDN layer; layout C = contiguous; CPn = context parallel over n GPUs; P = the segment count per fragment that the plan picks.

Note: in the forms this PR fixes (save_mode="full" with save_transfer=False at P > 1) previous can return incorrect gradients, so its column is a timing reference only. Repro on this GPU (shape B23, CP1, layout C with the in-kernel q/k norm on and off, fresh and shared workspaces; 42 of 52 checks with NaN-filled allocations): previous gives incorrect gradients in 4 of 52 checks (4 non-finite, 0 finite but not bitwise equal to the light form), all in the affected forms (4 of 8); this PR in 0 of 52: every form is finite and bitwise equal to the light form.
Bitwise, this PR vs previous in the timed processes (no NaN fill): 24 of 24 records (run x operation) equal; forward outputs equal in every record. The previous version happened to read the right values in these processes; the NaN-filled repro above shows the error.

New Features
Full save mode now retains the segmented transfer state even when transfer saving is disabled, allowing backward computation to reuse it instead of rebuilding it.
Bug Fixes
Saved-memory and workspace estimates now account for the retained state in applicable configurations.
Tests
Added coverage for full and light modes across workspace, normalization, checkpointing, and distributed exchange configurations.
…of the KCP GDN package
With save_mode="full" and save_transfer=False on a rank whose fragments are
split into P > 1 segments, the backward's merges read the M_seg^T staging
plane that the forward's transfer walk wrote. The eager forward drops that
workspace plane, the saved set kept it only under save_transfer, and the full
backward runs no transfer walk, so the merges read a freshly allocated,
never-written buffer: the gradients could differ from the light backward and
change from run to run with a reused workspace. exchange="ring" requires
save_transfer=False, so save_mode="full" with the ring exchange was affected
as well. The forward output was not affected, nor were the light backward and
save_transfer=True.
The full saved set now carries M_seg at P > 1 in either save_transfer form
(no extra launch; the forward allocates the plane fresh instead of using the
workspace pool). The byte queries count it, and a full saved set without
M_seg at P > 1 is refused. Regression tests fill every allocation of the
package with NaN bytes and require the full backward to give the light
backward's bits on the CPU emulation (one rank, and four ranks on the ring
and a2a exchanges) and on one GPU; the multi-GPU rows and the poisoned
workspace pairs add the full and ring + full forms under NaN-filled
allocations, at the planned P and at a forced P = 2.

only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes
minimal, and validate.

Walkthrough
When P > 1, full save mode now retains M_seg even if save_transfer is disabled. Saved-memory accounting, workspace staging, forward allocation, and saved-set validation reflect this condition. Tests cover backward, checkpoint, and distributed execution.

Summary
Saved-set contract and memory accounting flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train_kcp/README.md, flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train_kcp/cake_bytes.py, flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train_kcp/cake_kcp.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp.py
Saved-memory accounting includes all P planes of M_seg when the boundary is saved, P > 1, and either transfers are saved or save mode is full. Workspace staging omits stage_m when the saved set carries M_seg.
Forward allocation and saved-set handling flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train_kcp/cake_kcp.py
The forward path allocates and saves M_seg when P > 1 and either save_transfer is enabled or save_mode="full". Saved-tensor counts and validation use the same condition.
Backward and checkpoint validation tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_cp1.py
Tests compare full-mode results with light mode across workspace and checkpoint variants. Checkpoint hand-off expectations now depend on the runtime version.
Distributed and exchange validation tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_dist.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_ring.py
Tests exercise full mode without transfer saving under poisoned allocations. They check M_seg retention and compare outputs and gradients with light mode or FP64, including eligible P=2 cases.

…uilds outside the verified set
Two recompute-output tests run the shipped reuse_recompute_tapes="auto".
On a torch release outside RECOMPUTE_OUTPUT_TORCH_VERSIONS the frame proof is
not read, so "auto" takes the replay form: the recompute hands no tapes to the
backward and puts no kept entry. The recompute then writes the output as a
plain forward: "fused" (the output walk) where the registry ships it, else
"launched". The tests expected the hand-off of reuse_recompute_tapes=True
there ("launched", hand-off flags [False, True], one kept entry put and taken).
- _auto_hand_off(): whether "auto" hands the tapes off on this torch build.
- _dead_decision() and _fwd_o_after_recompute() take the hand-off of the form.
The default (True) keeps the expectations of the tests that pin
reuse_recompute_tapes=True.
- test_recompute_output_skipped_once_when_the_node_closes_the_segment and
test_recompute_output_with_an_untaken_node_and_a_second_backward use them
for the fwd_prep and output-write flags, the fwd_o decision and the kept
counters. The gradient, budget and registry checks are unchanged.
On a verified torch every expectation is the same as before.
… the KCP GDN package
The saved set keeps M_seg as the whole M_seg^T staging plane, [NSEG, HV]
FP32 states with NSEG = n_frag * P, under save_transfer and, since the
previous commit, under save_mode="full". gdn_saved_bytes_kcp and
gdn_saved_layout_kcp counted (P - 1) * n_frag * s for it, one state per
fragment and head less than the tensor the call keeps (for example 6 MiB
for a 9 MiB plane at P = 3, one fragment, HV = 48).
- cake_bytes.py: the M_seg term is P * n_frag * s (the module docstring
says so); the conditions are unchanged.
- README.md: the saved-set table gives the same formula.
- Tests: the byte-query formula of test_byte_queries follows, and the
full-mode M_seg test checks the query against the bytes of the saved
tensor itself.
Full mode without transfer saving now skips sizing workspace stage_m and allocates a fresh saved plane, but ensure leaves an already-held stage_m pool in place until later forward cleanup.
The old pool and new full-size saved plane coexist across the forward peak, potentially causing an avoidable GPU out-of-memory failure.
This can occur when: A P>1 full/no-transfer forward receives a pre-sized WorkspaceKcp that already holds stage_m, such as one constructed with a context and head counts.

Update the full-mode pool selection in the ensure path around _FULL_FRESH_POOLS
so a P>1 full/no-transfer forward releases any existing stage_m pool before
allocating the fresh saved plane. Preserve other pool-selection behavior and
avoid retaining both allocations through the forward peak.

Correct the light-mode M_seg row for kept-tape hand-offs.
With reuse_recompute_tapes, a checkpointed light backward at P > 1 and save_transfer=False takes stage_m from the recompute forward. It does not run the replay for M_seg. The table cell should name this path.

… GDN autograd (#8600)
`flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train_kcp` is the non-deterministic
KCP (context-parallel) GDN training package. Its q, k, v and output o
are BF16; g, beta and their gradients dg and dbeta are FP32. It supports
contiguous, zigzag and per-document zigzag layouts and explicit
`fragments` partitions. It has an optional in-kernel q/k L2 norm and
forward, backward and checkpointed calls. This PR makes its eager host
path cheaper. "Previous" is this package at the timing base (FlashInfer
main 61bc8b6), byte-copied and imported in the same process as this PR.
The launch stream is bound through `tvm_ffi.use_raw_stream` with a
cached device. This is the same stream that `tvm_ffi.use_torch_stream()`
binds. When torch exposes `_cuda_getCurrentRawStream`, no
`torch.cuda.Stream` is built per entry body or per unscoped launch. The
registry answers (in-kernel L2 norm records and fused-output records)
are derived once per registry identity and per architecture. The chunk
table's token count is kept with the context. An options dict whose
values are hashable is validated once per distinct content (bounded
64-entry cache; keyword overrides are part of the key). The launch-key
and public-argument builds are trimmed. Launches, records, grids, every
non-pointer argument, plans and numerics are unchanged. On B200 and
R200, host time per eager step is lower in all 27 measured rows
(previous / this PR 1.032-1.404). For one fwd+bwd step, it drops from
1407.3 to 1325.2 us on B200 workload N CP1 (1.062x) and from 1641.1 to
1417.6 us on B200 workload A CP1 (1.158x). On R200 workload N CP1, it
drops from 502.8 to 454.6 us (1.106x). In the device-timed comparison
with previous, all 20 classified rows (of 27; 7 rows have a cell that is
not published) are WIN. GB300 timing is pending.
This PR does not change the other Cake GDN training variants, namely the
single-rank packages `flashinfer.experimental.cake.cake_gdn_train`
(non-deterministic) and `flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train`
(deterministic) and the deterministic KCP package
`flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train_kcp`; architecture coverage
stays sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a.
**Correctness**
Unless a bullet names the rebased head, these checks ran on this patch
applied to the timing base 61bc8b6.
- Launch logs of this PR and previous are identical; rows that raise an
error raise the same error in both packages. A launch log holds the
kernel records, grids, every non-pointer argument value (tensors as
dtype, shape, stride and storage offset) and the plan records.
- Launch-log coverage: CPU at 1, 2 and 4 ranks (no ring, no graph
capture), B200 at 1, 2 and 4 ranks, GB300 at 1 and 2 ranks, and R200 at
1 rank.
- On B200, the launch-log check also ran with an A/A control at 2 and 4
ranks and with the arm order reversed at 4 ranks.
- Only the GPU runs at 2 and 4 ranks cover the ring exchange: B200 at 2
and 4 ranks, and GB300 at 2 ranks.
- One extra call ran per run, workload, CP and operation (host-time runs
and det-first device-timed runs). In each, the output and every input
gradient of this PR are bitwise equal to previous on every rank (54 of
54).
- In the reversed-order device-timed runs, A/A is bitwise equal to
previous (27 of 27).
- The single-GPU suites pass on B200, GB300 and R200 (429 passed and 9
skipped on each).
- The distributed suite passes on B200 with 8 GPUs and on R200 with 4
GPUs (212-SM node), with 33 passed and 20 skipped on each. It did not
run on GB300 (pending) or at the rebased head.
- 5 new tests (plus 2 updated stream-binding tests) pin the caches and
the stream binding. Each of 7 single-line mutations of the cache keys
and the binding makes its target test fail.
- The PR head 69c6c2f is the same patch
rebased on main 5335002. The timings
were taken at the timing base 61bc8b6. At the rebased head, compared
with main's package: the CPU suites pass (this package 390 passed and
115 skipped, the deterministic package 276 passed and 83 skipped), the
CPU launch logs at 1, 2 and 4 ranks are identical, the B200 single-GPU
suites pass (443 passed and 9 skipped), and the B200 launch logs at 1, 2
and 4 ranks are identical.

synchronize runs before each step. At CP > 1, a barrier also runs before
each step. At CP > 1 the table shows the slowest rank's median. The host
table is not classified.
- Device-timed cells (tables A and B) are in ms. Each cell is the median
over timed iterations of the per-iteration slowest-rank time (the
maximum over ranks for each iteration).
- Each (GPU, workload, CP, operation) row is printed as two lines. One
run has the det(main) arm first ("det first"). The other run reverses
the whole arm order ("reversed").
- drift = |last group median - first group median| / median of the group
medians.
- Publication rule:
- Table A needs the drift of this PR, previous and A/A each <= 2 %. "max
drift" is the largest of the three.
- Table B needs the drift of this PR and the compared baseline each <= 2
%.
- Otherwise the paired-ratio test applies: at least 5 groups, and every
per-group paired ratio within ±1 % of their median. A per-group paired
ratio is the baseline's group median divided by this PR's group median
in the same group (the baseline is previous in table A and the compared
baseline in table B). Both tests use unrounded values, so a bracket
printed to 3 decimals can look slightly inside or outside ±1 %.
- If both tests fail, the comparison is not published: table A prints
"not published (unstable)", table B prints "not published".
- Power-cap share: the share of NVML samples (every 50 ms) joined to an
arm's timed block that show the software power-cap reason, on the GPUs
the run used.
- If any arm of either run has a power-cap share >= 5 %, the row is not
published in both arm orders and is not classified (table A prints "not
published (power cap)", table B prints "not published"). This includes
det(main) and the non-Cake arms.
- Classes cover table A rows whose two runs are both published. WIN
means every per-group paired ratio is above 1 in both arm orders.
REGRESSION means every ratio is below 1 in both orders and the fwd+bwd
and ckpt rows agree. Everything else is PARITY.
- The row counts use (GPU, workload, CP, operation) rows, which table A
prints as 54 lines. Table A has 20 classified rows (of 27): 20 WIN, 0
REGRESSION, 0 PARITY.
- Published speedups vs previous range from 1.005 (B200 workload M CP1
ckpt) to 1.104 (B200 workload N CP1 fwd).
- Ten cells are not published:
- 4 unstable: B200 workload N CP4 fwd+bwd, CP8 fwd+bwd and CP8 ckpt in
the det-first order, and R200 workload N CP1 fwd in the reversed order.
- 6 power-capped: B200 workload A CP1 fwd, fwd+bwd and ckpt, in both arm
orders. For fwd, only the non-Cake head-sharded arms triggered the flag.
This PR, previous, A/A and det(main) had 0.0 %. For fwd+bwd and ckpt,
this PR's own arm was capped: 16.7 / 10.9 % and 25.0 / 15.5 % (det first
/ reversed).
- The 7 rows with these cells are not classified.
**Baselines**
- Previous = this package on FlashInfer main
61bc8b6, the timing base. A/A is a
second byte copy of the same base package, imported in the same process.
- det(main) = `flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train_kcp` at the
timing base 61bc8b6, not at the rebased main.
- Table B counts each arm order as a separate line. Against det(main),
this PR is faster on all 40 published lines of 54 (1.060-1.676).
- Four non-Cake arms run in the same process as this PR:
- FLA chunk (KCP form): FLA 0.6.0 chunk kernels in a KCP form.
- FLA chunk (head-sharded CP): FLA single-rank varlen kernels, with
heads split across ranks.
- cuDNN FROST (head-sharded CP): `checkpoint_every_n_tokens` 0, so the
backward recomputes the states.
- cuDNN FROST ck64 (head-sharded CP): `checkpoint_every_n_tokens` 64, so
the states are stored.
- Versions: fla-core and flash-linear-attention 0.6.0, FLA_FLASH_QLA 0,
triton 3.8.0, nvidia-cudnn-frontend 1.32.1 and nvidia-cutlass-dsl 4.8.1.
- Head-sharded CP needs CP to divide H_qk and HV. Workload N has heads
(2, 6), so at workload N CP4 and CP8 only FLA chunk (KCP form) applies.
- Accuracy filter: an arm qualifies only if its output and every input
gradient are finite and agree with this PR's tensors. The limits are
rel-RMS <= 1e-2 and max-abs <= 2e-2 x max|ref|, with ref = this PR's
tensor.
- Table B shows the fastest qualified non-Cake arm that meets the
publication rule. The cell is shown only if every non-Cake arm that
misses the rule is slower than the shown arm in every group. Otherwise
it reads "not published".
- Against the non-Cake arm, this PR's ratio is 0.422-1.562. This PR is
faster on 17 of 29 published lines.
- 9 of the 17 wins are against FLA chunk (KCP form) at workload N CP4
and CP8. 8 are against cuDNN FROST (5) or FROST ck64 (3).
- All 12 lines below 1 are CP1 lines against cuDNN FROST (5) or FROST
ck64 (7): B200 workload N (3), B200 workload M (4) and R200 workload M
(5).
- For workload M (B200 and R200), the CP1 gap to cuDNN FROST is mostly
kernel time (forward-type kernels). This host-path change does not
address it.
- For workload N on B200, the gap is mostly eager host time. This PR
reduces it but does not close it: in the det-first run, B200 workload N
CP1 fwd+bwd goes from 1.488 ms (previous) to 1.413 ms.
**Setup**
- Timed GPUs:
- B200 (sm_100a, 148 SMs): CP1, CP2, CP4 and CP8 on workload N; CP1 and
CP8 on workload M; CP1 on workload A.
- R200 (sm_107a, 208 SMs): CP1 on workloads N and M.
- GB300 (sm_103a): the single-GPU suites and the launch-log identity at
1 and 2 ranks passed. The GB300 distributed suite and GB300 timing are
pending. The tables have no GB300 rows, and no GB300 timing is claimed.
- Software: torch 2.14.1+cu130 (CUDA runtime 13.0) in a CUDA 13.4
development container, NCCL 2.30.7, and Python 3.14.9 on B200 and 3.14.8
on R200. All timings are eager.
- Timed boundary: one KCP GDN call with no convolution. Every arm,
including the non-Cake arms, uses the in-kernel q/k L2 norm.
- Device-timed protocol (tables A and B):
- The protocol has 5 groups. In each group, the arms run in palindromic
order (a1 .. an, an .. a1).
- Each arm visit runs 2 untimed and 12 timed iterations. One iteration
is one call.
- Each iteration runs after an L2 flush. CUDA events time it on every
rank.
- This gives 120 samples per arm. Each sample is the slowest rank's time
for that iteration.
- Host protocol: each arm gets 5 untimed warm-up steps. Then 4 groups
visit the 4 arms (this PR, previous, A/A, det(main)) in palindromic
order (a1 .. a4, a4 .. a1). Each visit runs 30 steps (240 per arm).
- Power-cap share reached up to 77.1 % on B200 (cuDNN FROST ck64,
workload A CP1 ckpt, det first) and 0.0 % on R200 (96 entries).
- A/A / previous is 0.997-1.008 in the host table (27 rows) and
0.993-1.017 over the 44 published table A cells.
- The B200 and R200 rows timed this patch applied to the timing base
61bc8b6, in a package tree that differs from the patch only in typing:
in this PR, the launch scope's `__exit__` is annotated `-> None` and has
no `return False`, and one local variable has an annotation. Runtime
behavior is the same. The rebase onto main also brings in main's own
change to this package since the timing base (#8542: the full saved set
keeps the segment transfer plane), which these tables did not time.
## Performance tables
All tables: eager calls, torch 2.14.1+cu130 (CUDA runtime 13.0) in a
CUDA 13.4 development container, NCCL 2.30.7; B200 = sm_100a (148 SMs),
R200 = sm_107a (208 SMs); contiguous layout.
### Host time per call (eager, no profiler)
Host wall time of one step (the whole fwd, fwd+bwd or ckpt operation)
from its start until the call returns, microseconds; before each step
the device is synchronized and, at CP > 1, the ranks meet at a barrier.
Median of 240 steps per arm: 5 untimed warm-up steps per arm, then 4
groups visit the 4 arms in palindromic order (a1 .. a4, a4 .. a1) with
30 steps per visit; at CP > 1 the slowest rank's median. previous = the
package before this change; A/A = a second copy of the previous package
(noise control); det(main) = the deterministic package at the timing
base.

### Table A: this PR vs previous (device-timed step, eager)
Milliseconds: the median over the steady timed iterations of the
per-iteration slowest-rank time (each iteration takes the time of its
slowest rank; L2 flushed before each iteration, CUDA events). Two runs
per row: 'det first' runs the det(main) arm first, 'reversed' runs the
whole arm order reversed. speedup = previous / this PR from the printed
values; the bracket is the median [min, max] of the per-group paired
ratios. A/A = second copy of previous / previous. A run is published
when the drift of this PR, previous and A/A is each <= 2 % ('max drift'
= the largest of the three; drift = |last group median - first group
median| / median of the group medians), or when >= 5 groups have every
per-group paired ratio within +-1 % of their median. class over both arm
orders: WIN when every per-group paired ratio is above 1 in both runs;
'-' when a run is not published.

### Table B: two baselines (device-timed step, eager)
det(main) = the deterministic package at the timing base 61bc8b6.
non-Cake = the fastest accuracy-qualified arm of the four non-Cake arms
of the same process: FLA chunk (KCP form); FLA chunk (head-sharded CP);
cuDNN FROST (head-sharded CP), checkpoint_every_n_tokens 0; cuDNN FROST
ck64 (head-sharded CP), checkpoint_every_n_tokens 64 (FLA 0.6.0 chunk
kernels, cuDNN frontend 1.32.1). Head-sharded CP needs CP to divide H_qk
and HV, so at workload N, CP4 and CP8, only FLA chunk (KCP form)
applies. A comparison is published when the drift of this PR and of the
compared baseline is each <= 2 %, or when >= 5 groups have every
per-group paired ratio within +-1 % of their median. speedup = X / this
PR from the printed values.

## Summary by CodeRabbit
* **Bug Fixes**
* GPU operations now bind to the caller’s active device and stream,
including when streams change or scopes are nested. Stream bindings are
restored after operations complete.
* **Performance**
* Repeated operations reuse cached capability checks, input validation,
and chunk-size calculations, reducing repeated work while preserving
validation behavior.

## Summary
The KCP dist test for the non-deterministic GDN KCP package reruns its
saved-set forms at a forced segments=2 (P = 2). This makes the full
backward read the saved M_seg^T plane on rows whose plan has no segments
(P = 1). `_p2_group_ok` only checked that every rank's fragments can
take P = 2, so the forced forms also ran on rows that already plan P >
1, where forcing P = 2 lowers the plan. This change limits the forced
forms to rows where every rank plans P = 1. It is test-only
(`tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_dist.py`, +15 −10) with no
package change.
## Why the forced form failed
- Row A4 (`KCP_TEST_ROWS=int3`) plans P = 24 on every rank. Forcing P =
2 gives longer walk chains than the plan, and the forced forms'
FP64-judged dbeta max-abs reaches 1.0096 of the A4 budget, which fails.
- The budget is derived at the planned schedule, and both packages pass
at the shipped plan (0.8989). The deterministic package gives the same
bits at forced P = 2 (the same 1.0096). Its dist test checks the forced
P = 2 forms only bitwise (full == light), not against FP64.
- This is not a regression. The forced-P=2 dbeta bits are identical at
every commit since #8316. The non-deterministic test has failed on A4
since the forced forms were added in #8542.
- The P sweep on A4 (dbeta ratio_max) is not monotone: P1 0.9694, P2
1.0096, P3 0.9701, P4 1.0208, P6 1.0085, P8 0.9681, P12 0.9258, P16
0.9261, P24 (plan) 0.8989, P32 0.8978, P64 0.9280. The rel-RMS ratio
stays flat at 0.9087–0.9104.
## Change
- `_p2_group_ok` now also requires every rank to plan P = 1:
`int(ctx.heads(HV).P) == 1 and int(ctx.heads(HV, P=2).P) == 2`.
Docstrings and comments are updated to match.
- On B200, two rows no longer run the forced forms: A4 (P = 24 on all 8
ranks) and C8 (P = 3 on six ranks, P = 1 on two). Their planned full
forms still check the saved M_seg plane: all 8 ranks for A4, and the six
P = 3 ranks for C8. C8's two P = 1 ranks lose the forced-P=2 read, but
they use the same code path as the other six. Every other int1 / int3
row plans P = 1 and keeps the forced forms.
## Testing
- B200 (8 GPUs, sm_100a), main cc71fa8 with this change applied (the
changed lines are identical), `-k "test_l2n_rows or test_multi_gpu_rows
or test_poisoned_workspace_pairs"`:
- `KCP_TEST_ROWS=int1`: 29 passed, 0 failed
- `KCP_TEST_ROWS=int3`: 15 passed, 0 failed (A4 no longer fails)
- CPU at the commit: `ruff check`, `ruff format` and `pre-commit` pass,
and `pytest --collect-only` on the file collects 55 tests.
- Not run: GB300, R200 and int4 rows.

## Summary by CodeRabbit
* **Tests**
* Clarified test coverage for selecting forced full-save forms based on
whether all ranks begin with the same plan.
* Tightened validation so these forms are accepted only when every rank
meets the required initial and forced plan conditions, with the decision
applied consistently across the group.

flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train_kcpis the non-deterministic KCP (context-parallel) GDN training package (BF16; contiguous, zigzag and per-document zigzag layouts; optional in-kernel q/k L2 norm; forward, backward and checkpointed calls). The bug affectssave_mode="full"withsave_transfer=Falseon a rank whose fragments split into P > 1 segments. There, the backward's merges read the M_seg^T staging plane that the forward's transfer walk wrote. But the eager forward dropped that workspace plane. The saved set kept it only undersave_transfer=True, and the full backward runs no transfer walk. So the merges read a freshly allocated, never-written buffer. As a result, gradients could differ from the light form's and could change from run to run with a reused workspace.exchange="ring"requiressave_transfer=False, sosave_mode="full"with the ring exchange was affected too. With this PR, the full saved set carries M_seg at P > 1 in eithersave_transferform. The forward allocates the plane fresh instead of taking it from the workspace pool, so there is no extra launch. The saved byte query counts the plane, and a full saved set without M_seg at P > 1 is refused. The forward output, the light form (the default) andsave_transfer=Truecompute the same results as before. The second commit (83c26d9) updates two recompute-output test expectations for torch builds outside the verified set; no package code changes. The third commit (5b7fd0a) makes the saved byte query (gdn_saved_bytes_kcp/gdn_saved_layout_kcp) count the whole plane, P x fragments x s with s = v heads x 64 KiB, instead of (P - 1) x fragments x s (for example, 6 MiB for a 9 MiB plane at P = 3, one fragment, 48 v heads); this also changes the query value undersave_transfer=True, and runtime behavior is unchanged. This PR does not change the other Cake GDN training variants (the single-rank packages
cake_gdn_trainandcake_gdn_det_trainand the deterministic KCP packagecake_gdn_det_train_kcp); architecture coverage stays sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a.Correctness
The repro on the timed GPUs compares gradients bitwise with the light form; most checks run with NaN-filled allocations (242 of 262 on B200, 282 of 298 on GB300, 42 of 52 on R200):
With this PR, every form is finite and bitwise equal to the light form. The controls of previous (light, replay,
save_transfer=True, P = 1) are correct. In the fixed forms previous can read a never-written buffer and return incorrect gradients (32 of the 36 affected-form repro checks on B200, 54 of 58 on GB300, 4 of 8 on R200), so its timings there are a timing reference only.Conventions

Extra memory
With
save_transfer=False, the full saved set now keeps M_seg (fp32, P x fragments x v heads x 64 KiB per rank) at P > 1. The light form and P = 1 ranks save nothing extra. The saved byte query reports these bytes. In the timed rows this is 9.0 MiB on the largest rank at CP4 and CP8 (63.0 MiB over all 8 ranks at CP8) and 24.0 MiB at the forced R200 P = 2 row.Performance tables
'P = 2': the shape plans P = 1 at CP1, so the R200 rows labelled P = 2 force two segments per fragment (segments=2) to run the affected path; the R200 light (control) row runs at the planned P = 1. Table B arms: FLA-CP = flash-linear-attention's own context parallelism; FLA-HS = head split (all-to-all) around FLA's single-GPU kernels; FROST-ck0 / -ck64 = the same head split around cuDNN frontend's GDN (states recomputed / stored every 64 tokens).

A. This PR vs previous version (same process, A/A arm)
Note: in the forms this PR fixes (save_mode="full" with save_transfer=False at P > 1) previous can return incorrect gradients, so its column is a timing reference only. Repro on this GPU (shapes B23 and A, CP1/CP2/CP4/CP8, layout C / Z / D with the in-kernel q/k norm on and off, fresh and shared workspaces; 242 of 262 checks with NaN-filled allocations): previous gives incorrect gradients in 32 of 262 checks (28 non-finite, 4 finite but not bitwise equal to the light form), all in the affected forms (32 of 36); this PR in 0 of 262 (0 of 408 with its extra checks): every form is finite and bitwise equal to the light form.
Bitwise, this PR vs previous in the timed processes (no NaN fill): 12 of 24 records (run x operation) equal; forward outputs equal in every record. Gradients differ only in the affected forms: CP4 full / a2a: dbeta, dg, dk, dv; CP4 full / ring: dbeta, dg, dk, dv; CP8 full / a2a: dbeta, dg, dk, dv; CP8 full / ring: dbeta, dg, dk, dv (previous is the incorrect side; this PR equals the light form in the repro).
B. Two baselines
this PR ms and det(main) ms come from one run of the row (time order): the first run whose det(main) cell is published, else the first run whose table A cell is published, else the first run; a non-Cake ratio is published only if this PR drifts <= 2 % in that run. Strongest non-Cake: the fastest arm that passes the accuracy check and drifts <= 2 %, timed in a separate process of the same session on the same GPUs, with this PR's default light form in that process; non-Cake / this PR divides by this row's this PR ms (across processes). A non-Cake cell is published when this PR and the shown arm both drift <= 2 %, every arm of that process with drift above 2 % is slower than the shown arm in every group (its smallest group median above the shown arm's largest), and the power-cap share is below 5 %; if several processes qualify, the first in time is shown and the others' ratios follow (process label: groups x timed calls per block (warm-up calls), first arm). Rows without any published baseline are listed at the end. Non-Cake processes: CP4 (one process, 5 groups x 12 timed (2 warm-up); fwd / fwd+bwd / ckpt): this PR 1.076 / 2.799 / 3.862 ms; no arm excluded; CP8 (3 processes in time order: 5 x 12 (2), this PR first; 7 x 24 (10), this PR first; 7 x 24 (10), FROST-ck64 first; fwd / ckpt): this PR 0.923 / 4.070 ms; excluded under the every-group rule: ckpt (7 x 24 (10), this PR first): FLA-HS 2.25 %.
