fix(cake_rmsnorm_det): fixed-order dw for the smallest token counts of the SM100/SM103 backward - #8512
This PR changes the small-row backward pass of the deterministic Cake RMSNorm training package (cake_rmsnorm_det_train) on sm_100a and sm_103a. The package covers BF16 and FP32 weights, residual and non-residual inputs, row widths H 256 (per-head view) / 512 / 1536 / 2048 / 4096 / 5120 / 6144, and both forward and backward passes. This PR changes only the backward pass (residual and non-residual, BF16 and FP32 weight) for row counts T up to a per-width limit. Above that limit, the previous kernels are kept. The limits on sm_100a are H 256: 87, H 512: 227, H 1536: 109, H 2048: 288, H 4096: 203, H 5120: 121, H 6144: 20 and residual H 6144: 32. The limits on sm_103a are H 256: 1680, H 512: 227, H 1536: 214, H 2048: 171, H 4096: 152, H 5120: 25, H 6144: 20 and residual H 6144: 32. For every width except H 256, one kernel now replaces the main backward kernel and the separate dw reduction kernel. It computes dx bit-identically to before. It sums each dw column in a fixed row order with exact products and compensated (TwoSum) summation. A fixed-order FP64 fold follows, then one final rounding to FP32. The dw result does not depend on the grid size or SM count. For H 256, the main kernel accumulates with TwoSum, and the dw column reduction also uses TwoSum. The package already uses this form for larger H 256 row counts. The new form makes dw more accurate at these row counts, so some rows are slower than the previous Cake package. torch.compile is faster than Cake on many of these small rows. Each Cake launch has a floor of a few microseconds, and the previous Cake package had the same floor. Speedups against the previous Cake package and torch.compile (listed in that order):
B200 (sm_100a): 0.888x-1.685x vs previous Cake (16 of 140 rows slower, at most +0.631 us); 0.270x-1.866x vs torch.compile (Cake faster on 67 rows).
GB300 (sm_103a): 0.859x-1.397x vs previous Cake (31 of 144 rows slower, at most +0.968 us); 0.307x-1.991x vs torch.compile (Cake faster on 41 rows).
NVIDIA B200 (148 SMs), sm_100a; CUDA 13.4 (kernels built with nvcc 13.4), PyTorch 2.14.1+cu130, Triton 3.8.0. Backward pass (dx and dw in one call). Latency = CUPTI kernel-active time per call, cold L2, median of 4 x 20 calls per process. Previous Cake = the previously shipped Cake package; Cake = this package; both through the package's public backward entry point in the same processes (counterbalanced). Each Cake and previous Cake value = fastest valid process over the row's formal sessions (at least 2 sessions; each session a fresh process set with fresh caches, one GPU per session; a process is valid when its repeated Cake control run agrees within 1 %). Each baseline value = fastest process that timed it. Fastest non-Cake = the fastest of torch.compile (per-shape static compile of the FP32 formula, dynamic=False), F.rms_norm, Liger and eager FP32, named when it is not torch.compile. Residual rows: in the forward, Cake and every baseline return h = x + residual and y = RMSNorm(h); the backward takes the gradients of y and h and returns the gradient of h (which is that of x and of residual) and dw (torch.compile compiles the add and the norm as one graph; Liger = the faster of its RMSNorm and its fused add RMSNorm). Speedup = baseline / Cake.

NVIDIA GB300 (152 SMs), sm_103a; CUDA 13.4 (kernels built with nvcc 13.4), PyTorch 2.14.1+cu130, Triton 3.8.0.

The other Cake variants of this family are unchanged: the forward pass, backward rows above the upper row count, and everything on sm_107a; the family ships on sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added deterministic RMSNorm training support for SM100 and SM103 GPUs, including backward computation for BF16 inputs.
Added additional backward execution paths for small token counts, with route selection varying by workload.
Improvements
Reduced workspace requirements for certain backward paths by using counters without partial-sum storage.
Updated route selection for residual-fused backward cases to account for token count.
…ted ring on SM103/SM107, SM107 FP32-weight H=5120 forward grid
- SM100 / SM103 H=256 backward (BF16 and FP32 weight): above 2048 rows (to
80896 rows on SM100, to 40960 on SM103) the weight gradient reduces through
the column-split compensated reduce (64 CTAs; dw bitwise the slab-16
chain's). The chain keeps the windows up to 2048 rows.
- SM107 H=256 backward: the four-CTA pipeline up to 2048 rows, the lean
compensated-dot ring with the column-split TwoSum reduce above.
- SM103 H=256 backward: the lean compensated-dot ring from 99840 to 720896
rows, the compensated-dot ring above.
- SM107 FP32-weight H=5120 forward above 49152 rows: 64 CTAs per SM (was 48;
same program).
- No program is added or removed; three (program, architecture) builds are
added. Each kernel unit prints the values of its compile-time constants at
their uses instead of a #define table (SASS unchanged).
- tests/norm/test_cake_rmsnorm_det_train_pairs.py follows the new windows.
…SM103 H=256 edges
- SM107 returns to the routes of the shipped package: the H=256 backward
runs the four-CTA pipeline to 65536 rows, the ring to 70656 rows and the
lean compensated-dot ring above (staged tree / TwoSum reduces as before);
the FP32-weight H=5120 forward above 49152 rows launches at 48 CTAs per
SM. The SM107 changes of the previous commit move to a follow-up.
- This PR now changes the SM100 / SM103 H=256 backward only: the
column-split compensated dw reduce above 2048 rows (to 80896 rows on
SM100, to 40960 on SM103) and the SM103 lean compensated-dot ring from
99840 to 720896 rows.
- The SM103 H=256 window edges at 99840 and 720896 rows are recorded as
bitwise-same (y, rstd and dx across the edge, BF16 and FP32 weight).
- tests/norm/test_cake_rmsnorm_det_train_pairs.py follows.
… H=256 windows and FP32-weight H=5120 forward grid
- SM100 / SM103: every backward window starting at 0 tokens but H=256
runs a column-task program over (0, C]: one launch computes dx and the
weight gradient by columns (TwoSum, fixed order), with a counters-only
workspace and min(slots, chunks + H / column width) CTAs. H=256 runs
the compensated pair (lean ring + column-split TwoSum reduce) there.
C depends on the route and architecture (6 to 1680 tokens).
- SM107 H=256 backward: the four-CTA pipeline up to 2048 rows, the lean
compensated-dot ring with the column-split TwoSum reduce above.
- SM107 FP32-weight H=5120 forward above 49152 rows: 64 CTAs per SM (was
48; same program).
- Every replaced program stays registered. The facade documentation
names the residual-fused H=6144 backward window above 6 tokens.
- tests/norm/test_cake_rmsnorm_det_train*.py follow the new windows and
the column-task workspace.
…ipped
The SM107 H=256 backward, with BF16 and FP32 weights, runs the shipped
windows again: the pipeline to 65536 rows, the ring to 70656 rows and the
lean compensated ring above. The SM107 routes and records equal main. The
SM100 / SM103 small-token windows are unchanged.
The PR adds deterministic RMSNorm training CUDA modules and updates backward route selection for small token counts on SM100 and SM103. It also changes workspace handling for column-task modules and updates routing, workspace, and stall tests.

Generated kernels and launch bindings flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_det_train_backend/csrc/*_kernel.cu, flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_det_train_backend/csrc/*_binding.cu, flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_det_train_backend/build.json
Adds CUDA backward kernel variants, TVM-FFI launch bindings with input and launch validation, and corresponding SM100 and SM103 AOT manifest records.
Small-token route windows flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_det_train.py, flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_det_train_backend/cake_windows.py, tests/norm/test_cake_rmsnorm_det_train_stall.py
Adds smaller-token backward windows and edge classifications for SM100 and SM103. Residual H=6144 routes split at 32 tokens, and the whole-SM wait-list entry applies above 32 tokens.
Column-task modules using claim_sum_f64 receive no partial-row capacity and use a counters-only workspace. Tests now accept standalone column-task selections and validate their workspace and routing rules.
Issue 7045: The PR adds small-token backward routes with fixed-order dw reductions, which addresses the described small-token dweight variation.
Issue 8466: The PR changes the residual H=6144 whole-SM threshold. The reported H=2048 failures remain outside this change.

…dual H=6144
On SM100 and SM103, the residual H=6144 backward (BF16 and FP32 weight)
runs the column-task program for 1 to 32 rows (was 1 to 6). At 8 rows the
pair's FP32-weight dw could be worse than the eager FP32 sum; the column
task's dw is not, its dx is bitwise the pair's, and it is faster than the
pair at every row count from 7 to 32. The pair keeps the rows above 32.
No program changes; SM107 is unchanged. The facade whole-SM list and the
pairs / stall tests follow.
The following files match only the catch-all rule; this approval covers that technical gap under the one-approval policy. GitHub still requires each owned path's own owner.
Add a precision check for the column-task dw route.
The new single-program branch checks the selection count and a 1e-4 relative-L2 bound on dw only. A plain FP32 column sum passes those checks and the bitwise tests, which compare runs of the same kernel. Add a precision check that a plain FP32 sum fails.

Reject dw that aliases w in the FP32-weight column route, or copy w first.
The FP32 column kernel reads w in each CTA's prologue and stores dw from another CTA's column task. The facade accepts a dw that shares storage with w. A CTA that starts after another CTA's dw store reads a gradient value in place of a weight, and its dx rows are wrong. Copy w before launch, or raise an error when dw and w share storage.

Vendor FlashInfer's Cake RMSNorm training packages of flashinfer-ai/flashinfer
eb3eb68d7deebbe619e05d93ecfd9796e4eaf2e3 into miles_ext_kernels/cake/_vendor/, byte for byte, as the packages of the
op rmsnorm in _vendor/VENDORED.json:
- cake_rmsnorm_det_train_backend (flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_det_train_backend, 582 files): the deterministic forward
and backward.
- cake_rmsnorm_train_backend (flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_train_backend, 581 files): the backward with a non-deterministic
weight gradient in some token-count windows; it runs its deterministic sibling for deterministic=True, so the two
packages move together.
eb3eb68d includes flashinfer-ai/flashinfer#8512: on SM100a and SM103a the deterministic backward of the smallest token
counts sums each weight-gradient column in a fixed row order, so its bits no longer depend on the SM count. The files
and their blobs are the ones the previous rmsnorm package vendored from the same commit.

This PR changes the small-row backward pass of the deterministic Cake RMSNorm training package (
cake_rmsnorm_det_train) on sm_100a and sm_103a. Speedups against the previous Cake package and torch.compile (listed in that order):NVIDIA B200 (148 SMs), sm_100a; CUDA 13.4 (kernels built with nvcc 13.4), PyTorch 2.14.1+cu130, Triton 3.8.0.

The other Cake variants of this family are unchanged: the forward pass, backward rows above the upper row count, and everything on sm_107a; the family ships on sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a.
