docs(cake_gdn): plain split views of packed Q/K/V cost a concatenation in the deterministic KCP backward - #8385
When q / k / v are head views of one packed [T, (2 H_qk + HV) * 128] row, the deterministic context-parallel GDN backward reaches full speed only through packed_qkv_views_det_kcp. Plain split views give bitwise the same results and keep torch's own autograd path, so hooks and retain_grad on them fire. But torch's split backward then concatenates dq / dk / dv into a new row. This PR documents this in the chunk_gdn_det_kcp docstrings and in the README input section. The docs give the helper's conditions, what its autograd node implies, and the measured cost below. The autograd path is unchanged. The PR also adds tests:
plain split, packed and contiguous inputs give bitwise-equal out, row gradient, dg and dbeta;
hooks and retain_grad fire;
the in-kernel Q/K L2 norm is covered off and on, and both direct and checkpointed calls are covered;
coverage includes the CPU fake backend, one GPU and the 4-GPU rows.
Cost of plain split views (issue repro: (H_qk, HV) = (16, 48), 32,768 tokens in five documents, one-rank context; CUDA-event ms, median of 60; PyTorch 2.14.1+cu130):

Documented recompute-handle requirements and its interaction with transfer-saving options and debug settings.
…n in the deterministic KCP backward; use packed_qkv_views_det_kcp (flashinfer-ai#8367)
Q / K / V that are head views of one packed [T, (2 H_qk + HV) * 128] row get the full backward speed only as
packed_qkv_views_det_kcp views. Plain split / view views give bitwise the same results and keep torch's own
autograd path (hooks and retain_grad fire), but torch's split backward concatenates dq / dk / dv into a new
row. The chunk_gdn_det_kcp docstrings and the README input section now say so, with the helper's conditions,
what its custom autograd node implies, and the measured cost of the plain views from the issue's repro
((16, 48), 32,768 tokens): about 1.1 ms (33-36 %) more backward per call on GB200 and GB300, with the in-kernel
Q / K L2 norm off or on.
Tests: plain split views against packed views and contiguous operands -- out, the row gradient, dg and dbeta
bitwise equal; hooks and retain_grad on the views and the split outputs fire once; the in-kernel norm off and
on; direct and checkpointed -- on the CPU fake backend, on one GPU and in the multi-GPU rows; the packed views
refuse in-place changes.

Document packed-view behavior and constraints flashinfer/cake_gdn_det_train_kcp.py, flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_det_train_kcp/cake_kcp.py, flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_det_train_kcp/README.md
The documentation describes packed-gradient pass-through and fallback concatenation, dense-channel and in-place mutation constraints, and the reported backward-time difference for plain split/view inputs. It also documents recompute-handle constraints.
Validate gradients and hooks tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_det_train_kcp_cp1.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_det_train_kcp_dist.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_det_train_kcp_l2n.py
Tests compare contiguous, plain split/view, and packed-view inputs. They check outputs, gradients, hooks, retained gradients, checkpointed execution, normalization settings, packed-gradient layout, and in-place mutation rejection.
Some sliced inputs can incur unexpected backward overhead. Clarify the fast-path conditions; the change is otherwise mergeable with this caveat.

Explanation
The title names the documented cost of plain split views of a packed Q/K/V row in the deterministic KCP backward. The changeset adds docstrings, README text, and tests that describe and check this behavior, so the title matches the main change. It uses the 'docs(cake_gdn)' prefix, which fits a documentation-focused change, though the PR also adds tests.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: Description, Related Issues (Closes #8367), and test coverage. It explains the problem, the documentation change, the autograd behavior, and the measured cost table, and it links the issue. The Pre-commit checklist, the full-scope CI reason, the experimental-tests fence, and the Reviewer Notes are not filled in. The experimental track also needs a tracking issue, owner, and graduation plan. These are missing template items, but the core description is complete.
Resolution
Fill in the template items that remain blank or unchecked: pre-commit checklist status, the 'All tests are passing' status, and the suggested CI test targets. Because the PR touches flashinfer/experimental/, complete the Experimental Track section. Name the tracking issue (the PR uses #8367, which is the linked issue), confirm the owner, graduation plan, and runnable example, and replace the commented experimental-tests fence with the test targets. Remove the template comment lines.

Explanation
Issue #8367 allows a documentation outcome when plain split-view backward is not within 2% of packed views. The PR updates the chunk_gdn_det_kcp and packed_qkv_views_det_kcp docstrings and the README input section. The text states the packed-view conditions, the plain-view concatenation cost, and the reported GB200 and GB300 measurements for both norm settings. Added tests cover bitwise output and gradient equality, hooks, retain_grad, direct and checkpointed calls, norm off and on, fake backend, and distributed cases.

State the token-stride condition for the fast path.
If a caller passes qkv[:, ::2, :] with more than one token, the tensor satisfies the stated shape and dense-channel conditions. Its token stride is larger than (2 * H_qk + HV) * 128, so _packed_rows rejects the packed layout. The GDN backward then allocates separate gradients, and the helper concatenates them instead of providing the promised packed-gradient handoff. State that full speed also requires dense packed token rows. Make the same qualification in both API docstrings. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…ation in the non-deterministic KCP backward (#8393)
Non-deterministic counterpart of #8385 for #8367.
When `q` / `k` / `v` are head views of one packed `[T, (2 H_qk + HV) *
128]` row, the non-deterministic context-parallel GDN backward reaches
full speed only through `packed_qkv_views_kcp`. Plain `split` views give
the same results within the accuracy budgets (bitwise in every run
measured below). They keep torch's own autograd path, so hooks and
`retain_grad` on them fire. But torch's split backward then concatenates
`dq` / `dk` / `dv` into a new row. This PR documents this in the
`packed_qkv_views_kcp` and `chunk_gdn_kcp` docstrings of
`flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train_kcp` and in the README (the
input bullet and the **Packed Q/K/V** section, which it extends). It
also updates the docstring of the facade
`flashinfer.cake_gdn_train_kcp.chunk_gdn_kcp` for `deterministic=False`.
That docstring names both helpers, `packed_qkv_views_kcp` and
`packed_qkv_views_det_kcp`; either one's views get the packed gradient
layout. The docs give the helper's conditions (a dense packed row, token
stride exactly `(2 H_qk + HV) * 128`, and the default `layout="tma"`),
what its autograd node implies, and the measured cost below. The
autograd path is unchanged, and plain views are not rerouted
automatically. The PR also adds tests:
- plain split, packed and contiguous inputs give the same results. The
package is non-deterministic, so bitwise equality is asserted only on
the CPU fake backend. On GPUs the arms are compared within the accuracy
budgets of the test files (on one GPU: relative RMS <= 1e-2, max-abs <=
2e-2 x max |ref|). With the in-kernel L2 norm on, out / dv / dg / dbeta
are compared against an FP64 reference, and dq / dk between the arms;
- hooks and `retain_grad` on the views and on the split outputs fire
with the gradient, and the gradient layout and the packed/split
statistics are checked exactly;
- packed views refuse in-place changes while the packed row requires
grad;
- the in-kernel Q/K L2 norm is covered off and on, and both direct and
checkpointed calls are covered;
- coverage includes the CPU fake backend, one GPU and the multi-GPU
context-parallel rows.
