feat(cake_gdn_kcp): with grad, add non-deterministic context-parallel Cake GDN chunked autograd backend - #8172
This PR adds flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train_kcp, the non-deterministic context-parallel variant of Cake's Gated DeltaNet (GDN) chunked training kernel with gradients. It is reached through flashinfer.cake_gdn_train_kcp with deterministic=False and is the only one of the kernel's four variants not yet on main. The tables give speedup as baseline latency / new latency, so values above 1 mean the new package is faster, against two baselines: the deterministic Cake KCP package exactly as on main, and, per row, the strongest non-Cake implementation that passes the same accuracy budget against an FP64 reference (chosen from FLA 0.6.0 context-parallel kernels, a head-parallel all-to-all around the cuDNN frontend 1.32.1 FROST GDN engine, and FlashQLA 0.1.3, which has no sm_107a build). The current tables cover R200 (sm_107a, 212 SMs) at CP4 and CP2, where the new package is at near parity with the deterministic one (1.00–1.02×) and about 3.7–5.2× faster than the strongest non-Cake implementation on forward+backward and checkpointed steps; B200 and GB300 rows will be added when measured.
R200 (sm_107a, 212 SMs), CUDA 13.0 — CP4
Protocol: eager; CUDA events on every rank, the slowest rank's time counts; 5 groups, in each the implementations run in palindromic order (A … B, B … A) 2 times, each call 12 timed iterations after 10 warm-up, 256 MiB L2 flush before every iteration, no cool-down; latency = median of the timed iterations; speedup = median of the 5 per-group ratios [min, max]; unpaired = ratio of the medians (the non-Cake value ran with another layout); (medians) = backward from the medians (forward+backward − forward).

R200 (sm_107a, 212 SMs), CUDA 13.0 — CP2
Protocol: eager; CUDA events on every rank, the slowest rank's time counts; 5 groups, in each the implementations run in palindromic order (A … B, B … A) 2 times, each call 12 timed iterations after 10 warm-up, 256 MiB L2 flush before every iteration, no cool-down; latency = median of the timed iterations; speedup = median of the 5 per-group ratios [min, max]; unpaired = ratio of the medians (the non-Cake value ran with another layout); (medians) = backward from the medians (forward+backward − forward).

Non-Cake implementations (the fastest one that passed the accuracy check, per row): FROST head-CP = head-parallel all-to-all around the cuDNN frontend 1.32.1 FROST GDN engine; FLA KCP = FLA 0.6.0 context-parallel; n/a = no recompute-handle form; FlashQLA: unsupported (no sm_107a build).
The kernel's other Cake variants, all on main, are the deterministic single-GPU flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train, the non-deterministic single-GPU flashinfer.experimental.cake.cake_gdn_train (#8157) and the deterministic context-parallel flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train_kcp (flashinfer.cake_gdn_train_kcp with deterministic=True), and the kernel covers sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added context-parallel packed GDN training with deterministic and experimental numerical routes, plus configurable checkpointing, recomputation, and replay options.
Added support for querying workspace, saved-state, and communication memory requirements.
Added benchmark coverage for training workflows and optional comparisons with other implementations.
Documentation
Added guidance on the new training backend, supported inputs, options, and known limitations.
Tests
Added correctness and build checks, including coverage for outputs, gradients, replay, and workspace behavior.
…DN training
Adds flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train_kcp and the facade
flashinfer.cake_gdn_train_kcp: context-parallel forward, backward and
checkpoint replay of packed GDN layers, with the API, layouts, precision
classes, accuracy budgets and memory gates of the deterministic KCP package.
The facade takes deterministic: bool = True on every entry; False selects this
package, and torch.use_deterministic_algorithms(True) keeps the deterministic
package with a one-time warning. The package's default segment plan
(fill_small) walks fewer intra-rank segments where segment merges cost more
than they save; a context built with graph_replay=True drops the one-chain
rows of that plan, which only save launches that graph replay removes. Every
path is fixed-order: results are run-to-run reproducible for a fixed plan and
partition and are not bitwise equal to the deterministic package's.
Includes the rendered programs (build.json, build.test.json), the API, build,
single-GPU and multi-GPU tests, and the KCP benchmark with deterministic and
non-Cake context-parallel arms.

The new experimental training path has a few small defects. Combining a default options object with graph replay raises a spurious error. Benchmark reports can contain non-standard JSON. The README misstates some options and a return type. None of these blocks core use, but they should be fixed before or soon after merge.

Write the JSON report with only finite numbers.
sota_agreement sets max_err = math.inf whenever a candidate has non-finite values. rel_rms and max_abs_over_max_ref can also become inf or nan. json.dumps then writes the bare tokens Infinity and NaN, which strict JSON parsers reject. Examples are jq, JSON.parse, and most dashboards. This happens exactly for the non-qualified arms that the report must record. Map non-finite floats to strings or null before you write the file. Then pass allow_nan=False so that any regression fails at write time.

Resolve the default after applying option overrides.
OptionsKcp() stores the implicit default as "auto" before make_options applies graph="replay". dataclasses.replace preserves that value, and check() then raises because "auto" is incompatible with replay. This also affects chunk_gdn_kcp, which passes its graph override through over.
Keep an unspecified reuse_recompute_tapes value distinguishable from an explicit "auto" value until the final graph mode is known. Resolve the unspecified value to False for graph="replay" before validation and use. Update consumers to read the resolved value.

| `graph` | **`"off"`**, `"replay"` | CUDA-graph replay of the steady state (a static pool per key) |
| `reuse_recompute_tapes` | **`"auto"`**, `True`, `False` | under `torch.utils.checkpoint(use_reentrant=False)` the light backward binds the forward tapes torch's recompute just wrote instead of replaying #1 and the #2 tape walk (bitwise the same gradients, the retention unchanged; a no-op outside that backward; `False` restores the replay form). `"auto"` keeps the tapes only when the GDN node is the last operation of the checkpointed region that saves a tensor (the same checkpoint-frame proof as `recompute_output="auto"`): then its backward is the region's first and the kept tapes die before any other backward runs; with a later saver in the region (an output projection, an MLP) the kept set would live through those operations' backward and raise the region's backward peak by the full tape set (`gdn_saved_bytes_kcp(save_mode="full")` minus the saved states), so `"auto"` takes the replay form there. Measured on one GB300 (torch 2.14.1), 261,987 tokens, `(H_qk, HV) = (2, 6)`: a region of GDN + a 768x768 output projection + a 768->2x2048->768 SwiGLU has a backward peak of 9250.54 MiB with the kept tapes (`True`) and 6927.31 MiB with the replay form (`False` and `"auto"`), at 21.29 vs 22.70 ms per training step of the region; a region the GDN node closes keeps the tapes under `"auto"` (five 240k-262k-token (16, 48) packs: training step and steady peak unchanged against `True`). `True` always keeps the tapes, `False` never. With `graph="replay"`, the one mode that excludes the kept tapes, the default is `False` and an explicit `True` / `"auto"` is refused. One live kept set: in a checkpoint segment with several GDN layers only the last layer skips the replay, the earlier layers replay as before |
| `recompute_output` | **`"auto"`**, `"always"` | under `torch.utils.checkpoint(use_reentrant=False)` torch re-runs the forward inside `.backward()` only to re-save its tensors and discards that run's output; when the GDN node is the last operation of the checkpointed region that saves a tensor, `"auto"` does not launch the output program (#5) of that re-run. The proof is read from torch's checkpoint frame (the node is executable, the remaining saved-tensor holders are exactly this node's, early stop is on, and the torch release -- `torch.__version__` without its local `+cuNNN` build tag (`cake_kcp.torch_release`) -- is one of the verified releases in `cake_kcp.RECOMPUTE_OUTPUT_TORCH_VERSIONS`); any other state -- a later saver in the region such as the next layer or a norm on the output, a non-executable node, a reentrant checkpoint, `graph="replay"`, another torch build -- launches it as before, and `cake_kcp.LAST_CALL["fwd"]["fwd_o_reason"]` records why. Gradients and retained bytes are the same either way; `"always"` is the unconditional launch |
| `p_rule`, `walk_seg` | plan policy / explicit override | how many intra-rank segments a fragment is walked as (`P`); a function of metadata and the SM count only. The shipped policy `fill_small` starts from the deterministic twin's `row_cost_lpt` plan, which costs the three per-rank programs over every rank's fragment table with a crossing-aware model and switches the whole row away from the per-rank default only when an alternative is cheaper by at least its margin (2 % for the `occ` program; 0 % for the `one` program, which has no segment composition and takes a model tie), then lowers `P` as described under "Numerical mode" (faster schedule); the same topology gives the same `P` on every rank |

Correct the two README API descriptions.
p_rule is a test_knobs key, and walk_seg is internal walk-table data. Neither is an OptionsKcp field. The public segment override is segments.
gdn_comm_bytes_kcp returns collective-keyed {"send", "recv"} mappings for this context, not {rank: {...}}. Its return value also contains b1_*, padding, B1/B2/B3, and scalar metadata. Update the field references below the signature to use the nested collective keys.

The shipped policy `fill_small` starts from the deterministic twin's `row_cost_lpt` plan, which costs the three per-rank programs over every rank's fragment table with a crossing-aware model and switches the whole row away from the per-rank default only when an alternative is cheaper by at least its margin (2 % for the `occ` program; 0 % for the `one` program, which has no segment composition and takes a model tie), then lowers `P` as described under "Numerical mode" (faster schedule); the same topology gives the same `P` on every rank |+| `segments` | **`None`**, integer | explicit segment-count override per fragment (`P`); it must equal the context's plan. The plan policy selects `P` from metadata and the SM count. `p_rule` is available only through `test_knobs`; `walk_seg` is internal table data |

Review comment at @flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train_kcp/README.md at line
212:
Update the README API descriptions: list `segments` as the public segment
override, clarify that `p_rule` is available only through `test_knobs` and
`walk_seg` is internal table data, and remove both from the `OptionsKcp` fields.
Correct the `gdn_comm_bytes_kcp` return description to use collective-keyed
`{send, recv}` mappings and update the field references below its signature to
match, while noting the additional return values.

feat(cake_gdn_kcp): with grad, add non-deterministic context-parallel Cake GDN chunked autograd backend

…0 SM count (#8181)
This PR changes only host-side planning in
`flashinfer.experimental.cake.cake_gdn_train`, the non-deterministic
single-GPU variant of Cake's Gated DeltaNet (GDN) chunked training
kernel with gradients. On sm_107a (R200), it re-plans the scan segment
tables of the forward and adjoint chains for the R200 SM count. It also
adds a per-architecture cost table, `CHAIN_PLAN`, which prices each
candidate scan table for the chain that runs it and takes a deeper (64,
1) split table when that saves at least 2 µs and prices at or below
0.95x the default. Only sm_107a is listed, and no device code changes on
any architecture. The planned tables on B200 (sm_100a) and B300 / GB300
(sm_103a) are byte-identical to main, so those architectures are
unaffected.
Speedup is baseline latency / new latency, so values above 1 mean the
new non-deterministic head is faster. Each speedup is the median of the
paired group ratios measured inside one process, and the bracketed
values are the [min, max] of those ratios. The first baseline is the
deterministic Cake package `flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train`
from current main, which already includes the two-stream overlap from
#8161. The second is, per cell, the fastest cuDNN frontend 1.32.1 FROST
GDN arm. In the arm names, ck0 / ck64 keep chunk states every 0 / 64
tokens and bi is batch-invariant mode. ck0 keeps no chunk states and its
backward recomputes them, so ck64 is the like-for-like arm. FROST is the
strongest non-Cake implementation that runs on R200: FLA 0.6.0 (Triton),
measured on the same R200 class earlier in this series, was never the
fastest, and FlashQLA does not support sm_107a. Each row is one packed
variable-length GDN chunked training call on one GPU with head dim 128,
BF16 q/k/v and output gradient, and FP32 g and beta (H = query/key
heads, HV = value heads, T = total tokens). Five shapes have tables
changed by this PR and three are unchanged controls, as the last column
shows. Every changed shape passes the same accuracy budget as the rest
of the series against an FP64 chunked reference: rel-RMS ≤ 1e-2 and
max-abs ≤ 2e-2 of max|ref| on every output and gradient. Worst measured
rel-RMS is 4.17e-03 to 4.18e-03, identical to the deterministic package,
and worst max-abs/max|ref| is 6.55e-03 to 7.68e-03. Results are bitwise
reproducible run to run. All three arms ran in one process on one NVIDIA
R200 (sm_107a, compute capability 10.7, 212 SMs; driver 620.62, CUDA
13.0 runtime, PyTorch 2.14.1+cu130). They were timed in ABBA-paired
groups with 100 warm-up and 300 steady iterations per block under a
sustained-load protocol (group tolerance 1%, drift limit 2%, at least 5
groups for any re-run). No cell needed a re-run and no power-cap
throttling was observed. The operations are fwd, bwd, fwd+bwd and ckpt,
an activation-checkpointed step (two forwards plus one backward).
R200 (sm_107a, 212 SMs), CUDA 13.0, latencies in ms, three arms timed in
one process.

Reading:
- Against deterministic Cake on the changed shapes, fwd+bwd / ckpt are:
`r07_1x16384_h8` 1.106 / 1.062, `pair_h1_hv3` 1.147 / 1.017,
`pair_h2_hv6` 1.074 / 1.012, `g3_16x4096_h1` 1.043 / 1.019 and
`pair_h16_hv48` 1.015 / 1.030. Forward is 1.076 to 1.166 on every
changed shape except `g3_16x4096_h1`. Backward is 1.052 to 1.087 on
every changed shape except `pair_h16_hv48`.
- Two changed-shape cells are below 1 against deterministic Cake.
`pair_h16_hv48` bwd is 0.986: deterministic main gained a two-stream
adjoint grouping on this shape in #8161, and this PR changes only that
shape's forward table. `g3_16x4096_h1` fwd is 0.995, and its forward
table is unchanged.
- The three controls are at parity with deterministic Cake, from 0.991
to 1.004.
- Against FROST, the new head is faster on every bwd, fwd+bwd and ckpt
cell (1.046 to 2.455). Its forward is also faster on `r07_1x16384_h8`,
`pair_h1_hv3`, `pair_h2_hv6`, `g3_16x4096_h1` and `r01_4x4096_h8` (1.052
to 1.543). FROST ck0 is faster on the forward of `pair_h16_hv48`
(0.471), `p7074_P1_241817x6_h2` (0.779, ck0 bi) and `pair_h8_hv24`
(0.818).
Rows for the 216-SM R200 are still being measured and will be added to
this PR as a comment or body edit when they are ready.
The kernel's other Cake variants, all on main, are the deterministic
single-GPU `flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train`, the
non-deterministic single-GPU
`flashinfer.experimental.cake.cake_gdn_train` (#8157, which this PR
tunes), the deterministic context-parallel
`flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train_kcp` and the
non-deterministic context-parallel
`flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train_kcp` (#8172). The two
context-parallel variants are both reached through
`flashinfer.cake_gdn_train_kcp(deterministic=...)`, and the family ships
on sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a.

This PR adds
flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train_kcp, the non-deterministic context-parallel variant of Cake's Gated DeltaNet (GDN) chunked training kernel with gradients. It is reached throughflashinfer.cake_gdn_train_kcpwithdeterministic=Falseand is the only one of the kernel's four variants not yet on main. The current tables cover R200 (sm_107a, 212 SMs) at CP4 and CP2, where the new package is at near parity with the deterministic one (1.00–1.02×) and about 3.7–5.2× faster than the strongest non-Cake implementation on forward+backward and checkpointed steps; B200 and GB300 rows will be added when measured.R200 (sm_107a, 212 SMs), CUDA 13.0 — CP4

P1–P5: packed variable-length document mixes (documents: P1 6, P2 3, P3 2, P4 1, P5 4; P1–P3 are the packs of issue #7082); (H, HV) = query/key heads and value heads; S = total tokens; layouts C contiguous, Z zigzag, D zigzag per document.
B200 sm_100a (CP2 / CP4 / CP8 / CP16): pending (measurement queued).
GB300 sm_103a: pending (measurement queued).
The kernel's other Cake variants, all on main, are the deterministic single-GPU
flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train, the non-deterministic single-GPUflashinfer.experimental.cake.cake_gdn_train(#8157) and the deterministic context-parallelflashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train_kcp(flashinfer.cake_gdn_train_kcpwithdeterministic=True), and the kernel covers sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a.Summary by CodeRabbit
