Fixes the four points of #7074 in the experimental cake_gdn_train package. All four reproduced on a GB300 with torch 2.14.1+cu130; the five commits change Python and tests only.
1. Synchronizing calls in build_kcp_context + prepare
On the issue's (2, 6) layout, preparation made 24 synchronizing calls (every host-built table was a pageable torch.tensor(values, device=cuda) copy), costing 52 ms of host time on an idle device and 147 ms behind 127 ms of queued work. These tables now travel in one pinned host buffer per dtype with one non-blocking copy_, so torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode("error") passes over kcp_partition + build_kcp_context + prepare. The idle host time itself was the LPT cost model's water-filling bisection summing over all SMs per level; it now sums over the distinct machine loads, and the plan and every table are bitwise unchanged. A new (2, 6) layout now prepares in 5.8 ms, idle or behind queued work (the issue's 4.5 ms was a GB200 host); the CPU-only breakdown goes from 50.2 to 4.4 ms.
2. reuse_recompute_tapes=True and the region's backward peak
On the issue's region (GDN + o_proj + SwiGLU, 261,987 tokens, (2, 6)) the backward peak is 9251 MiB with kept tapes vs 6927 MiB with reuse_recompute_tapes=False; the 2323 MiB difference is exactly the ten forward tapes (gdn_kcp_saved_bytes(save_mode="full") - gdn_kcp_saved_bytes(save_mode="light")), held through the backward of later operations that save tensors. The new value reuse_recompute_tapes="auto", now the default, hands the tapes over only when the checkpoint frame proves the GDN node is the region's last saver (the same proof recompute_output="auto" reads) and takes the replay form otherwise. On the issue's region it gives the 6927 MiB peak at 22.7 ms per region step (21.3 ms with kept tapes); regions ending with the GDN node keep today's speed and memory (training step 1.00x on five 240k-262k-token (16, 48) packs at CP 1, where replay costs 16-19 % of the step, and on a 4-rank zigzag-per-document pack). LAST_CALL["fwd"]["hand_off_reason"] records each forward's decision.
3. recompute_output="auto" gated on 2.14.1+cu130
The frame proof reads torch's Python checkpoint source, shared by every CUDA build of a release, so the gate now checks the release (torch.__version__ without its +cuNNN tag): 2.14.1+cu132 resolves like 2.14.1+cu130, and other releases keep launching the output program. Tests monkeypatch torch.__version__ to 2.14.1+cu130, 2.14.1+cu132, 2.14.0+cu130 and 2.15.0+cu132.
4. gdn_kcp_workspace_bytes reports 3885 MiB, the backward binds 2894 MiB
The formula summed the ten forward tapes into the backward in every form and omitted the identity tile. Under the kept-tape backward those tapes are hand-off tensors outside the workspace, and four of them (aqk, qscale, h, v_new) return to the arena after their last reader: 2894 MiB is that end state. The layout now follows the arena's lifetimes: the forward is its tape-walk peak and the backward the largest of its phases (adjoint exchange, adjoint tape walk, end state) for the form chosen by reuse_recompute_tapes= (None = package default), with hand-off tensors listed as bwd.kept_tapes and backward_transient. It equals the bytes a tracked caller-held workspace binds, with tolerance 0, forward and backward, on the issue's (2, 6) context (kept 2893.57 MiB, replay 3872.42 MiB) and on a 32k-token (16, 48) pack.
Tests. CPU suite (api + kcp + kcp_build): 296 passed; GPU suite: 19 passed on one GB300; 4-rank distributed suite: 0 failed, with all multi-GPU rows passing under the new default. New tests cover the no-sync contract, the upload helper and the makespan equivalence.
The CUDA kernels and their sources are byte-identical to the base (kernel identity digest equal: 1860 entries, 76260 tensors).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Checkpoint tape reuse now defaults to automatic mode, retaining tapes when checkpoint-region conditions allow and otherwise replaying them. Explicit tape reuse is not available with replay graph mode.
Workspace estimates now distinguish forward and backward peaks and account for tape reuse choices.
Updated default workload planning for improved handling of uneven workloads.
Improved GPU table uploads and kernel execution.
Documentation
Clarified tape reuse behavior, workspace estimates, and supported PyTorch releases.
The KCP plan picks P segments per fragment on every rank from the row's fragment
tables. The shipped rule "row_cost" chose one whole-row program ("wave_fill1",
"occ" or "one"). The new rule "row_cost_lpt" starts from that plan and lets a
rank that "row_cost" planned at P > 1 in the wave regime (1 <= n_frag <= 3,
NC_max_frag >= 257) move to the P that minimises its crossing-aware LPT walk
cost (smallest P within ROW_COST_LPT_MARGIN_PCT = 2 % of the optimum), under two
gates: (i) the rank's walk steps (5 * summary + 3 * tape LPT makespans) must not
grow, (ii) the row's slowest-rank walk steps must shorten by at least
ROW_COST_LPT_ROW_MARGIN_PCT = 4 % or the row keeps the "row_cost" vector. A rank
"row_cost" plans at P = 1 never enters the replacement, and a candidate that
moves such a rank off P = 1 is rejected for the whole row. The rule is a pure
function of (fragment tables, HV, SM count), identical on every rank.
P_RULE_DEFAULT becomes "row_cost_lpt" (build_kcp_context / KcpContext default);
"row_cost" and the per-rank rules stay selectable through the keyword-only
p_rule knob. kcp_plan_row keeps p_rule="row_cost" as its own default.
Changed rows (zero-GPU census of the plan module over every perf, correctness
and adversarial row at every CP and layout, SM count 152 = GB300 and the GB200

Rows that did not pass and what happened to them: P2 CP4 Z, P3 CP2 C and P5 CP2 C
were changed by the first spelling of the rule and failed the adoption line
(their GB300 PAIR lines are in the table). P3 CP2 C is structural: the ranks
left the unsegmented P = 1 path for a 9-19-segment chain, a cost the walk-step
model does not contain; the final rule excludes delivered-P = 1 ranks for that
reason. P2 CP4 Z and P5 CP2 C had modelled bounds of 3.65 % and 3.16 %, below
the final 4 % row margin, so the final rule keeps their "row_cost" vectors.
The GB200 P3 CP2 Z and P5 CP2 Z sessions ran identical plans on both arms (the
device reports 152 SMs; the census's 148-SM column is model output for a
device that was not measured) and read as A/A controls.
Composition order, disclosed: the GB300 sessions measured spelling v2 of the
rule (walk-monotone rank gate + 2 % row gate) selected via p_rule. Spelling v3
(the delivered-P = 1 exclusion and the 4 % row margin, calibrated on the GB300
results without the structurally failed P3 CP2 C row) was composed after those
measurements; v3 plans the five changed rows exactly as v2 did (census), so the
GB300 lines apply to the delivered rule unchanged, and every GB200 session ran
v3. History of record: v1 (census spelling, failed the pre-registered kill line
on 8 rows) -> v2 -> v3 (final); a v4 with an NC_max_frag <= 512 regime bound
was attempted and withdrawn (it would have dropped the measured-PASS P3 CP4 C
and P5 CP4 C rows, and its motivation was the void 148-SM reading).

Docstring correction, text only: the four passages that still called "row_cost" the shipped default (module
docstring, the P_RULES comment, the kcp_plan_row and build_kcp_context docstrings) now name "row_cost_lpt" as the
default and "row_cost" as the selectable legacy rule; with docstrings and comments stripped the module's AST is
identical before and after the edit (sha256 of both dumps in the delivery record), so the gate evidence above was
measured on this code unchanged.
Tests: ROW_COST_LPT_CHANGED pins the five changed vectors (census fixture, SM count 152); a new rows-of-record test
checks the default context against it; the "row_cost" tests select that rule explicitly; the default-rule test
asserts P_RULE_DEFAULT == "row_cost_lpt" and that kcp_plan refuses both row rules.

Walkthrough
The changes add automatic checkpoint recompute-tape reuse, update forward and backward workspace accounting, change the default KCP row planner, and batch table uploads. They also update a CUDA staging pipeline, generated kernel sources, and build metadata.
reuse_recompute_tapes accepts True, False, or "auto". The default is "auto" for the default graph mode. Auto mode uses checkpoint-frame proof to decide whether to hand off tapes. Torch release checks strip local build tags.
Workspace accounting and validation flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train/cake_bytes.py, flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train/README.md, flashinfer/gdn_train.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp.py
Workspace reporting separates forward and backward phase peaks and transient bytes. Tests compare reported and measured workspace and check auto-mode results, handoff, replay, and registry cleanup.
upload_tables batches CUDA table copies by dtype and returns shaped device views. Context and walk-table construction use the helper.

Correct the "(the default)" label on the kept-tape form.
The shipped default is now "auto". The gdn_kcp_workspace_bytes description still calls the kept-tape backward "the default". For None and "auto", _kept_form in cake_bytes.py returns False. The query therefore reports the replay form by default, and the replay form counts the ten forward tapes as workspace. A reader of this text expects the default figure to exclude the tapes, but the figure includes them.

Prevent UnboundLocalError when build_kcp_context raises under sync-debug mode.
This block exists to catch a synchronizing call in plan.build_kcp_context(...). If that call raises RuntimeError, fresh_ctx is never bound. The except block records the error. Then del fresh_ctx on Line 1014 raises UnboundLocalError.
The rank then fails without producing its report. The other ranks continue to the later dist.all_gather_object calls and wait for that rank, so a distributed run can hang. This happens exactly when the regression the check targets occurs.

Building and preparing a context for a new batch layout uploaded every host-built
table with torch.tensor(values, device=cuda): a pageable host-to-device copy that
synchronizes the stream, 24 times per (2, 6) single-rank context, so a context
prepared behind queued device work waited for that work (147 ms host time behind
127 ms of queued work, 52 ms with an idle device).
Every table of a context, its head plan, the chain tables and the fused walk
tables now goes through one helper: the tables of one dtype are laid out in one
pinned host buffer (each at a 256-byte boundary) and copied with one asynchronous
copy_, which enqueues cudaMemcpyAsync and records the staging block on the stream.
torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode("error") passes over kcp_partition +
build_kcp_context + prepare, the host time behind queued work equals the idle host
time, and every device table is bitwise the table built on the CPU: the plan and
the P vectors are untouched (the identity dump of the five perf packs x three
layouts x CP {1, 2, 4, 8, 16} x every rank x (2, 6) / (16, 48) x two SM counts
has the same digest before and after).
The idle host time itself (52 ms for the (2, 6) context, a steady per-layout
cost) was the plan's LPT cost model: the water-filling bisection summed over all
152 SM loads per level, 5421 sums over 692,272 loads per context. The machines
are now a multiset load -> count (the greedy depends on the loads only), the same
integer arithmetic on the same multiset: identical makespans and P vectors (the
identity dump's digest is unchanged, a CPU test compares 400 random instances
with the list form and the job-by-job greedy). Preparing a new (2, 6) layout
takes 5.8 ms on the GB300 host (idle and behind queued work alike); the CPU-only
breakdown is 50.2 -> 4.4 ms, a (16, 48) pack 6.5 -> 1.9 ms.
Tests: the no-sync contract and the device-vs-CPU table identity on one GPU, the
upload helper's values and the makespan equivalence on the CPU, and a G10 flag of
the multi-rank suite that prepares a fresh context of each rank under the error
mode.

… the build string
The frame proof behind recompute_output="auto" was enabled for the exact version
string 2.14.1+cu130, so other CUDA builds of the same release (2.14.1+cu132) never
skipped the recompute's dead output program. The proof reads torch's Python
checkpoint source, which every CUDA build of a release shares, so the verified set
now names releases and the check drops the local +<build> tag (a pre-release tag is
kept). Tests monkeypatch torch.__version__ to 2.14.1+cu130, 2.14.1+cu132,
2.14.0+cu130 and 2.15.0+cu132 and assert the resolved mode of a checkpointed step.

gdn_kcp_workspace_bytes summed the ten light forward tapes into the backward in
every form and omitted the identity tile, so it reported 3885 MiB for the issue's
(2, 6) 261,987-token context where a caller-held workspace binds 2894 MiB under the
shipped kept-tape backward: there the ten tapes are the recompute forward's
hand-off tensors outside the workspace, and after the last reader four of them
(the ones an eager forward leaves bound) return to the arena.
The layout now follows the arena's lifetimes: the forward is its tape-walk peak
(the pools plus the eight tapes live then; the two prep-only outputs are dropped
right after the prep program), the backward is the largest of its phases (the
adjoint exchange, the adjoint tape walk, the end state) for the requested tape
form -- reuse_recompute_tapes as a keyword, None = the package default -- with the
hand-off tensors listed separately (bwd.kept_tapes) and the transient total
(backward_transient, the same figure in both forms). Measured on one GB300 with a
tracked workspace, the layout equals the bound bytes with tolerance 0 in both forms
for the issue's context and a (16, 48) pack, forward and backward; the CPU suite
checks the same with the torch emulation and that the lifetime constants mirror
the arena's.

…n the node closes the region
With later operations of a checkpointed region saving tensors (an output projection,
an MLP), the kept tapes of reuse_recompute_tapes=True are produced at the recompute
and consumed by the GDN backward, which runs after those operations' backward: the
region's backward peak rose by the full tape set (9251 MiB against 6927 MiB with
the replay form at 261,987 tokens, (2, 6); the difference is the ten light tapes).
"auto" hands the tapes over only when the checkpoint frame proves the GDN node is
the region's last saver -- the proof recompute_output="auto" already reads, taken
once per forward -- so the kept set never outlives the GDN backward; with a later
saver, early stop off, another torch release or user hooks it takes the replay
form. The default stays True in this change; the registry counts a miss for the
True form only, and LAST_CALL["fwd"]["hand_off_reason"] records the decision.
Tests run the three forms on regions with and without a later saver, bitwise
against the direct autograd result, with the kept-tape accounting of each.
Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The kept-tape backward stays the default where it is free and gives way where it
costs memory: with "auto" a checkpointed region the GDN node closes keeps today's
speed and memory (five 240k-262k-token (16, 48) packs, CP 1: training step and
steady peak unchanged against True; a 4-rank zigzag-per-document pack likewise),
and a region with a later saver takes the replay form -- on a 261,987-token (2, 6)
region with a 768x768 projection and a SwiGLU MLP the backward peak drops from
9250.54 MiB to 6927.31 MiB (the ten light tapes) at 21.29 -> 22.70 ms per step of
the region, the same figures as reuse_recompute_tapes=False there. True and False
remain keyword values; graph="replay" still resolves the default to False.

Fixes the four points of #7074 in the experimental
cake_gdn_trainpackage. All four reproduced on a GB300 with torch 2.14.1+cu130; the five commits change Python and tests only.1. Synchronizing calls in
build_kcp_context+prepareOn the issue's (2, 6) layout, preparation made 24 synchronizing calls (every host-built table was a pageable
torch.tensor(values, device=cuda)copy), costing 52 ms of host time on an idle device and 147 ms behind 127 ms of queued work. These tables now travel in one pinned host buffer per dtype with one non-blockingcopy_, sotorch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode("error")passes overkcp_partition+build_kcp_context+prepare. The idle host time itself was the LPT cost model's water-filling bisection summing over all SMs per level; it now sums over the distinct machine loads, and the plan and every table are bitwise unchanged. A new (2, 6) layout now prepares in 5.8 ms, idle or behind queued work (the issue's 4.5 ms was a GB200 host); the CPU-only breakdown goes from 50.2 to 4.4 ms.2.
reuse_recompute_tapes=Trueand the region's backward peakOn the issue's region (GDN + o_proj + SwiGLU, 261,987 tokens, (2, 6)) the backward peak is 9251 MiB with kept tapes vs 6927 MiB with
reuse_recompute_tapes=False; the 2323 MiB difference is exactly the ten forward tapes (gdn_kcp_saved_bytes(save_mode="full") - gdn_kcp_saved_bytes(save_mode="light")), held through the backward of later operations that save tensors. The new valuereuse_recompute_tapes="auto", now the default, hands the tapes over only when the checkpoint frame proves the GDN node is the region's last saver (the same proofrecompute_output="auto"reads) and takes the replay form otherwise. On the issue's region it gives the 6927 MiB peak at 22.7 ms per region step (21.3 ms with kept tapes); regions ending with the GDN node keep today's speed and memory (training step 1.00x on five 240k-262k-token (16, 48) packs at CP 1, where replay costs 16-19 % of the step, and on a 4-rank zigzag-per-document pack).LAST_CALL["fwd"]["hand_off_reason"]records each forward's decision.3.
recompute_output="auto"gated on2.14.1+cu130The frame proof reads torch's Python checkpoint source, shared by every CUDA build of a release, so the gate now checks the release (
torch.__version__without its+cuNNNtag):2.14.1+cu132resolves like2.14.1+cu130, and other releases keep launching the output program. Tests monkeypatchtorch.__version__to2.14.1+cu130,2.14.1+cu132,2.14.0+cu130and2.15.0+cu132.4.
gdn_kcp_workspace_bytesreports 3885 MiB, the backward binds 2894 MiBThe formula summed the ten forward tapes into the backward in every form and omitted the identity tile. Under the kept-tape backward those tapes are hand-off tensors outside the workspace, and four of them (
aqk,qscale,h,v_new) return to the arena after their last reader: 2894 MiB is that end state. The layout now follows the arena's lifetimes: the forward is its tape-walk peak and the backward the largest of its phases (adjoint exchange, adjoint tape walk, end state) for the form chosen byreuse_recompute_tapes=(None= package default), with hand-off tensors listed asbwd.kept_tapesandbackward_transient. It equals the bytes a tracked caller-held workspace binds, with tolerance 0, forward and backward, on the issue's (2, 6) context (kept 2893.57 MiB, replay 3872.42 MiB) and on a 32k-token (16, 48) pack.Tests.
